Since the earliest days of the Church, followers of Jesus have been shaped by the word. Scripture is more than a historical record—it is a living encounter, where God’s active presence speaks through written words to ground, challenge, and transform us.

In this series, we’ll deepen our commitment to reading, studying, meditating on, and surrendering to the Scriptures as we explore essential texts for our discipleship to Jesus. Together, we’ll discover how God’s word tethers us to life with Him—anchoring us in truth—while also drawing us forward into deeper intimacy and maturity in Christ.

We hope this conversation will be deeply informative and helpful!

A Lenten Devotion | Week One

Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness was not a time of weakness, but a place of strength. It was a time of intimacy—initiated and sustained by the Holy Spirit in the wilderness. On the other side of those 40 days, Jesus was led out of the wilderness with a sense of power in the Spirit, clarity and confidence in God’s purposes for him, and deepened connection with the Father.

This is our prayer for Lent in 2025. That each of us would be renewed in strength, confident of God’s leading in our lives, drawn towards deeper intimacy with the Father, and filled with the power of the Holy Spirit.

15 “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

This week Pastor Mike Rigdon invites us into a conversation rooted in Acts 9 verses 32-43 where Peter said yes to God on a journey where he was equipped to initiate multiple spirit lead healings. Peter likely heard many no's from God along his journey though. He might have heard no's in some difficult circumstances even.

We have all likely experienced no's from God that were difficult to understand and wrestle through. Should a potential no, stop us from asking for a yes? Are we willing to live the life he is calling us to regardless of the outcome? Mike reminds us of some compelling practices to live into the reality of our life being His.

Acts 8:1-8 starts with death, mourning, persecution, and suffering, yet it ends with joy. What happened between verses 1 and 8? Two things. First, God did what he does: he took broken things and made them beautiful. He took sorrow and turned it into joy. Second, the Church chose to receive that joy.

The martyrdom of Stephen shows the stark contrast between the wisdom of God and the wisdom of the world. What made sense to the Jewish authorities based on their values and priorities, in fact, ran counter to the Kingdom and mission of God. But when we look at Stephen, he shows us that God’s wisdom begins and ends with Jesus. Because we too live at the collision of these two wisdoms, it is important for us to recognize the difference between them and to remember what Stephen gave his life to teach us: Jesus changes everything.

As we’ve been discovering, the very first church thought of themselves as a family. In today’s teaching, Mike talks about the challenges the early church faced as they were continuing to grow beyond Jerusalem and how they resolved those challenges together.

This Sunday we continue on in our Acts series and hear from Josh on Acts 5.  The story of the apostles' arrest in Acts 5 raises some important questions for anyone who desires to follow Jesus. How do we discern the move of God and stay nimble to move with him? How do we live this life with boldness in the face of opposition? How do we realign our priorities so suffering can be turned to joy? And Acts 5 also gives us the answer to those questions: keep our eyes on Jesus, our Savior and Champion.

At first reading, this story makes us all pretty uncomfortable and leaves us wondering, "What exactly is going on here?" One of the things we see the early church doing in response to the gift of the Holy Spirit is practicing radical generosity. In fact, they were so generous that they temporarily ended poverty in their community. Their generosity was a sign that the Kingdom of God has come near, and it lent power to their testimony about the resurrection of Jesus. In this sermon, we discuss how we can follow their example.

Thanks for joining us today for another dive into the book of Acts.
The Church in Acts 4 teaches us some valuable lessons about prayer in seasons of adversity. From them, we learn the power of God-centered prayer. We start with the truth of who He is, the Sovereign Lord, and this puts everything else in its proper place. He is Lord, and we are His, His people, His servants doing His work in the world. And this understanding of Him and ourselves shapes the things we ask for; it changes how we pray.

Good morning! Thanks for tuning in today. We continue on in our study in the book of Acts with Josh reading and helping to break down the story from Acts 3 of the lame man being healed sitting outside of the temple. He breaks down how the disciples show this man Jesus' character through deeply seeing him, being unhurried in their interaction with him, and showing him love in a proximal and tangible way.

Good morning! Thanks for tuning in today. Josh is speaking on the same passage we've been in over the past few weeks. Really hammering down this idea of a church that is devoted in everything we do.

He talks about the blocks and the real excuses we have that get in the way of us being the church God has called us to be. And we will work through how to dismantle these blocks.

Good morning!!

Today, Josh is back teaching on our Questions series. We are wrestling with the trustworthiness of the Bible. Can we trust what it says, and what is the history of the Bible and how it got into our hands today. We believe that Christians, out of everyone, should not fear these sorts of questions, but instead choose to wrestle through them with the Lord.

From our Philippians series. Paul’s letter to the church in Philippi was written to a group of people living in a Roman colony with all of the privileges and responsibilities of Roman citizens. Yet, Paul reminds them in Philippians 3:15-21 that, when they bowed their knees to King Jesus, their citizenship changed. Their country of birth was no longer their homeland, but their citizenship was now in heaven, and they were now called to live out that new identity as a redemptive presence in a land no longer their own.

From our Philippians series. The question, what does it mean to be Christian, is one that the Church has wrestled with from the very beginning. Paul dealt with it directly in many of his letters, including here in Philippians 3:1-11. Whenever anyone tried to add on to the Gospel, Paul was always quick to remind the Church that Jesus is everything. He is the One who qualifies us, and only in placing our full confidence in Him (boasting in Him) will we find abundant life.

From our Philippians series. After a heavy week in light of events at the US Capitol on January 6, it becomes all the more important that God’s people take a hard look at ourselves and ask if we are genuinely seeking to embody the values of our King and the Kingdom that He would bring among and through us. Philippians 2:1-11, shows us that chief among these values is humility.

From our Advent series. In the second week of Advent, we consider the true nature of peace, of the “shalom” God promises to His people. In Luke 2:1-20, we see that those people to whom God offered peace, who were the first to hear the Good News that Jesus had come, were shepherds who had no imagination for what peace could actually mean. In other words, Jesus came to broaden for them, and for all of us, the horizon of the possible, and bring us into a new reality defined by His shalom.

From our Advent series. In this first week of Advent, we give weight and substance to a fundamental Christian word that, in modern culture, has been drained of much of its power: hope. For centuries, the global Church has relied on the liturgical calendar to interrupt the cadence of life in the empire and to draw followers of Jesus up into the rhythms of the King and His Kingdom. These holy habits ground us in God’s story and the part we play in it and, in so doing, cause us to move through the world differently, at a different rhythm and tempo. Advent is a time during which Christians around world prepare themselves to celebrate Christmas, prepare themselves for the King who has come and is coming again. In other words, Advent exists to help us keep Christmas holy.

As we prepare for Thanksgiving, we are reminded to offer our gratitude as worship to God. Psalm 100 reminds us to enter places with thanksgiving - extending with open hands a gift we have to bring. Our response to Jesus' greatest act as King is worship of deep gratitude.  Therefore, we seek to be a people of immense gratitude and thanksgiving for all that Jesus has done for us, and we desire to share that worship with others.

As a church, Canopy celebrated Orphan Sunday on November 11th. We jumped into Romans and Deuteronomy, where we were reminded that God "defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing." Josh and Heather Harrison shared their personal journey with adoption, and a couple from Canopy shared their journey as well. As a church, we want to empower others to care for the fatherless, just like our Father cares for us.

From our Vision series. Canopy is a family of house churches learning to live free. This weekend, we explored Exodus 33 and the truth that we find freedom in being covered by God. God works through us. God is with us. He does not leave us to fend for ourselves but has given us His Spirit to seal us as His own, to advocate for us to us, to lead and guide us, and to empower us for His mission. We want to grow in sensitivity to His presence and in expectancy that, where He is, anything is possible. So, we always pursue His presence and ask Him to move among and through us.

From our Vision series. Canopy is a family of house churches learning to live free. This weekend, we explored Exodus 19:2-8 and the truth that we find freedom in being commissioned by God. God works through us. Jesus has invited us to partner with Him in God’s restorative work in the world through His Spirit with and in us. We want to grow in our awareness that He is at work and in our availability to join Him in that work. So, we always look for opportunities for partner with Him.

From our Vision series. Canopy is a family of house churches learning to live free. This weekend, we explored Exodus 6:2-8 and the truth that we find freedom in being claimed by God. God is for us. In Jesus and by the power of the Holy Spirit, God has made us His own, His people, citizens and heirs of His Kingdom, daughters and sons. We want to grow in our identity as His children, in intimacy with Him.

From our Life of Jesus series. In John 2:1-11, when Jesus famously turned water into wine, He wasn't just showing off. He was making a statement that should shape the way we should read the rest of the book of John, the way we view the Good News of the Kingdom, and the way we see our lives. Jesus has come to be the Restorer of Joy!

From our Life of Jesus series. The Great Commission in Matthew 28:16-20 has been foundational to the Church since Jesus spoke it 2000 years ago, but what does it actually mean? Who is Jesus commissioning? Where is He sending them? How do they make disciples? The disciples who heard first these words went on to change the world. As we hear and live them, we can do the same.

From our Life of Jesus series. The way we try to change the world and the way Jesus is changing it are very different. Our strategy often involves overwhelming and overt displays of power aimed at instant outcomes, while Jesus took a much quieter and slower approach. The parables of the mustard seed and the yeast in Matthew 13:31-35provide us with a compelling vision of what it means to live in and participate in the Kingdom of God.

From our Pentecost series. Having been ignited by the Holy Spirit, the early Church went on to participate daily in the life of the Spirit. It is not enough simply to receive the Holy Spirit one time; we must continue to "walk in step with," must "go on being filled" by the Holy Spirit. This week we take a look at Acts 2:42-47to see how the Church in book of Acts continued to partner with the work of the Spirit in and through them and to learn how we can feed the fire.

From our Pentecost series. The Holy Spirit is the fire, but the Church is the kindling. In the first part of our two-part series on the Day of Pentecost, we take a look at Acts 2:1-13. What what the postures of the first followers of Jesus that prepared them for what the Holy Spirit did on the Day of Pentecost? What did they believe and pursue that changed everything for them and for the whole world? Are we believing and pursuing the same things?

From our Life of Jesus series. In Luke 5:1-11, an awful day of fishing turns extraordinary when Jesus shows up. The call to cast their nets in deeper waters was a call to radical and inconvenient faith for the disciples, the kind of faith that Jesus always rewards. But, to be clear, the reward wasn't the fish.

From our Life of Jesus series. In Matthew 18:1-5, Jesus commends a little child as a picture of greatness in His Kingdom, but what does that actually mean? Jesus' call isn't  to embrace the sweetness or innocence or capacity for wonder of a child but something far less appealing and far more powerful.
