Canopy Church
Canopy is a church based in Orange County, California. We are a group of house churches, learning to live free.
Since the earliest days of the Church, followers of Jesus have been shaped by the word. Scripture is more than a historical record—it is a living encounter, where God’s active presence speaks through written words to ground, challenge, and transform us.
In this series, we’ll deepen our commitment to reading, studying, meditating on, and surrendering to the Scriptures as we explore essential texts for our discipleship to Jesus. Together, we’ll discover how God’s word tethers us to life with Him—anchoring us in truth—while also drawing us forward into deeper intimacy and maturity in Christ.
We are so grateful to have a follow up conversation with Tammy Comer about Deliverance after she shared her story a few weeks ago. Bryan and Tammy talk in depth about the the freedom that comes when God delivers us from bondage, and the nuance of approaching it as followers of Jesus filled with the Spirit. We hope this conversation will be deeply informative and helpful!

A Lenten Devotion | Week One
Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness was not a time of weakness, but a place of strength. It was a time of intimacy—initiated and sustained by the Holy Spirit in the wilderness. On the other side of those 40 days, Jesus was led out of the wilderness with a sense of power in the Spirit, clarity and confidence in God’s purposes for him, and deepened connection with the Father.
This is our prayer for Lent in 2025. That each of us would be renewed in strength, confident of God’s leading in our lives, drawn towards deeper intimacy with the Father, and filled with the power of the Holy Spirit.

As we wrap up this months-long journey through the Sermon on the Mount, we wanted to pause and hear stories from our community about what God has been up to in them in light of these teachings.
We come to the end of our teaching series through the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 7:24-29.
Matthew 7:15-20
15 “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. 16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

At the edge of the Red Sea is where we will find deliverance. God has parted the waters, now all we have to do is walk through into freedom. Kiana takes us through Exodus and the story of Moses.
Our journey through the Old Testament Gospel stories continues with Genesis 16, where the story of Hagar, the Egyptian slave girl who was seen, pursued, and blessed by God.
During this week's message, we continue our Worthy series by discussing 2 Samuel 24:10-25 to learn what it means to offer God sacrificial worship, that is worship that costs us something.
We finish our Who are you, Lord series with a historical fiction based on the Palm Sunday story out of Luke 19:28-40. Looking through the lens of Simon the Zealot, we learn that there is often a significant difference between the Kingdom Jesus came to bring and the one we want from him.
This week in our Who Are You, Lord sermon series, we take a look at the stories of three disciples who have life-changing encounters with the risen Jesus (John 20-21).
As we continue our Who Are You, Lord sermon series, we study the story of the rich, young ruler from Luke 18 and ask ourselves, "Is Jesus important to me, or is he essential?"
During the Who are you, Lord? series, we will be seeking to answer this most important question by looking at Jesus through the stories of individuals who had life-changing encounters with him, women and men who met him and met themselves in the process. As we hear their stories, we will find ourselves face-to-face with him, looking at ourselves reflected in his eyes, and we too will be forever changed.
This week, we look at the story of the remarkable Samaritan woman at the well in John 4 and see what happens when Jesus meets us in our places of deepest need.
Week 1 of our series "Who are you, Lord?" We will be seeking to answer that question by looking at Jesus through the stories of individuals who had life-changing encounters with him, women and men who met him and met themselves in the process. As we hear their stories, we will find ourselves face-to-face with him, looking at ourselves reflected in his eyes, and we too will be forever changed.
Our friend, Philip Pattison, the Founder and Executive Director of Foster the City shared a powerful message with us about God's heart for the most vulnerable in our society and gave us several specific ways we, as individuals and a church, can answer his call to care for them.
This week, we continue our Acts series with a discussion about the Riot in Ephesus out of Acts 19:23-41.
Our first ever All-In Night was so much fun! We got a chance to eat, worship, pray, and hear what God is doing in and through Canopy. Good things are happening, and there are plenty of opportunities for everyone to play a part. This week Pastor Mike Rigdon invites us into a conversation rooted in Acts 9 verses 32-43 where Peter said yes to God on a journey where he was equipped to initiate multiple spirit lead healings. Peter likely heard many no's from God along his journey though. He might have heard no's in some difficult circumstances even.
We have all likely experienced no's from God that were difficult to understand and wrestle through. Should a potential no, stop us from asking for a yes? Are we willing to live the life he is calling us to regardless of the outcome? Mike reminds us of some compelling practices to live into the reality of our life being His.

Today we took a journey through Acts 9, the conversion of Saul. We learned several things from this world-changing moment, but the most important of them is simply this: Jesus is worth everything.

Today we had our monthly meeting with Place 4 Worship church in Fullerton. Place 4 Worship’s Pastor Sheridan McDaniel & Pastor Josh Harrison felt convicted to pause and reflect on the recent gun violence. They invited us into an honest conversation and to consider these issues as our problem and as an invitation to humility, prayer, and repentance.

This week we learned more about Philip’s story and the adventure that comes when we say “yes” to God. We learned that life is found when we live in obedience, that If you seek God, you will find him, and that all are welcome in the Kingdom of God!

Acts 8:1-8 starts with death, mourning, persecution, and suffering, yet it ends with joy. What happened between verses 1 and 8? Two things. First, God did what he does: he took broken things and made them beautiful. He took sorrow and turned it into joy. Second, the Church chose to receive that joy.

The martyrdom of Stephen shows the stark contrast between the wisdom of God and the wisdom of the world. What made sense to the Jewish authorities based on their values and priorities, in fact, ran counter to the Kingdom and mission of God. But when we look at Stephen, he shows us that God’s wisdom begins and ends with Jesus. Because we too live at the collision of these two wisdoms, it is important for us to recognize the difference between them and to remember what Stephen gave his life to teach us: Jesus changes everything.

As we’ve been discovering, the very first church thought of themselves as a family. In today’s teaching, Mike talks about the challenges the early church faced as they were continuing to grow beyond Jerusalem and how they resolved those challenges together.

This week, we take a look at one of the more disturbing stories in the book of Acts, the story of Ananias and Sapphira. At first reading, this story makes us all pretty uncomfortable and leaves us wondering, "What exactly is going on here?" But when we dig a little deeper, we learn a great deal about who God is, who we are, and what it means to live in the presence of the AWESOME God.

One of the things we see the early church doing in response to the gift of the Holy Spirit is practicing radical generosity. In fact, they were so generous that they temporarily ended poverty in their community. Their generosity was a sign that the Kingdom of God has come near, and it lent power to their testimony about the resurrection of Jesus. In this sermon, we discuss how we can follow their example.

The Church in Acts 4 teaches us some valuable lessons about prayer in seasons of adversity. From them, we learn the power of God-centered prayer. We start with the truth of who He is, the Sovereign Lord, and this puts everything else in its proper place. He is Lord, and we are His, His people, His servants doing His work in the world. And this understanding of Him and ourselves shapes the things we ask for; it changes how we pray.

From our Philippians series. Paul’s letter to the church in Philippi was written to a group of people living in a Roman colony with all of the privileges and responsibilities of Roman citizens. Yet, Paul reminds them in Philippians 3:15-21 that, when they bowed their knees to King Jesus, their citizenship changed. Their country of birth was no longer their homeland, but their citizenship was now in heaven, and they were now called to live out that new identity as a redemptive presence in a land no longer their own.

From our Philippians series. The question, what does it mean to be Christian, is one that the Church has wrestled with from the very beginning. Paul dealt with it directly in many of his letters, including here in Philippians 3:1-11. Whenever anyone tried to add on to the Gospel, Paul was always quick to remind the Church that Jesus is everything. He is the One who qualifies us, and only in placing our full confidence in Him (boasting in Him) will we find abundant life.

As the story of Anna and Simeon (in Luke 2:22-40) reminds us, to be a people of hope is to live anchored to the reality of the Kingdom of God and the King who has come and is coming back for us.

This week, Pastor Sheridan McDaniel takes us to John 6:25-59 to share his heart that we become followers of Jesus and not just fans. They came from a restless empire where the lifestyle was defined by a relentless pursuit of more, but God called them to be different. But, this is rarely the right call. Exodus 16:10 shows us that, in wilderness seasons, God is often calling us “further up and further in.”

From first read, one might wonder what these plagues of frogs, locusts, and blood have to do with the Israelites freedom. From our Exodus series. As we dive into Exodus 5:22-6:12, we want to know what it means to be claimed by God as citizens of His Kingdom, but it’s entirely dependent on who God is. In order to know who we are, we must begin with knowing and discovering who God is. Who are you, Lord? If we want to understand the Bible, we can’t begin with the people in the Bible - we must begin with the God the people are responding to, and what the people are seeing in God. Christmas has happened - what now? Instead of blind optimism or depressed pessimism, maybe there's a way we can bring the hope of the incarnation into our world? Jesus shows up in a broken and desperate situation, and by showing up in it, transforms it. Jesus reawakens our humanity so that we can reflect the image of God to all creation. In this New Year, we have something to be excited about because the hope of Christmas fuels us as we step in and reflect the incarnation.

Isaiah 9 reminds us that the hope of Christmas is both smaller than you ever imagined and greater than you ever dreamed. The hope of the world came from an unexpected land and in the form of a child. However, the hope came in the shape of The King the nations truly needed - a Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.

For centuries, the global Church has relied on the liturgical calendar to interrupt the cadence of life in the empire and to draw followers of Jesus up into the rhythms of the King and His Kingdom. These holy habits ground us in God’s story and the part we play in it and, in so doing, cause us to move through the world differently, at a different rhythm and tempo. Advent is a time during which Christians around world prepare themselves to celebrate Christmas, prepare themselves for the King who has come and is coming again. In other words, Advent exists to help us keep Christmas holy.

As we prepare for Thanksgiving, we are reminded to offer our gratitude as worship to God. Psalm 100 reminds us to enter places with thanksgiving - extending with open hands a gift we have to bring. Our response to Jesus' greatest act as King is worship of deep gratitude. Therefore, we seek to be a people of immense gratitude and thanksgiving for all that Jesus has done for us, and we desire to share that worship with others.

As a church, Canopy celebrated Orphan Sunday on November 11th. We jumped into Romans and Deuteronomy, where we were reminded that God "defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing." Josh and Heather Harrison shared their personal journey with adoption, and a couple from Canopy shared their journey as well. As a church, we want to empower others to care for the fatherless, just like our Father cares for us.

God works through us. God is with us. He does not leave us to fend for ourselves but has given us His Spirit to seal us as His own, to advocate for us to us, to lead and guide us, and to empower us for His mission. Our strategy often involves overwhelming and overt displays of power aimed at instant outcomes, while Jesus took a much quieter and slower approach. From our Pentecost series. Having been ignited by the Holy Spirit, the early Church went on to participate daily in the life of the Spirit. It is not enough simply to receive the Holy Spirit one time; we must continue to "walk in step with," must "go on being filled" by the Holy Spirit.
