The 2021 theme for World Mental Health Day is “Mental Health in an Unequal World.” This theme highlights the fact that between 75% to 95% of people with mental health issues in low and middle-income countries are unable to access the care that they need. In the US, it's not much better for people of color given that only 14% to 15% of U.S. psychologists are non-white. The good news: there is a movement to decolonize, disrupt, and dismantle oppressive mental health practices. That movement is being led by our Coach Chat guest, Melody Li.
Melody is a queer therapist of color and founder of Inclusive Therapists, a platform that offers a safer, simpler way for people of all identities and abilities in all bodies to find a culturally responsive, social justice-oriented therapist. Melody is a mental health liberation activist whose goal is to decolonize mental health and healing, especially for those who live at the BIPOC and LGBTQIA2S+ intersection.
Melody talks in this episode with Coach Colette about what it means to decolonize mental health and how colonizing practices impact those with marginalized identities. Melody shares their own decolonizing journey to healing from internalized shame, oppression, and white supremacy. They also talk about the power and necessity of telling your story and the importance of finding safe, healing, liberation-oriented communities — communities that take your mental health seriously and provide space for that storytelling. You don't want to miss this one— it's a conversation rich with meaning and reflection on how we can tend to ourselves and others.

Content Warning for sexual trauma and gender-based violence.
Have you ever felt a spiritual connection with an ancestor or other higher being? Have you ever had difficulty recognizing when your intuition is guiding you? These are just two of the eye-opening concepts explored in this Coach Chat conversation with Anita Kopacz. Anita is a spiritual psychologist, and author of the newly released novel, Shallow Waters, published through Black Privilege Publishing at Simon & Schuster. The novel imagines Yemaya, an Orïsha—a deity in the religion of Africa’s Yoruba people—in mid-1800s America. Readers meet Yemaya as a young woman who is not yet fully aware of the spectacular power she possesses to protect herself and those she holds dear.
When we're open, we can experience a lot through our senses, yet many teachings tell us to ignore those experiences. In this episode, you'll hear about Anita's first connection with a spiritual being, and how she was treated by others when they learned of her gift. She shares in the conversation that she has been connected to Yemaya since she was 18 years old. Coach Colette and Anita discuss how Western psychology fails to incorporate spirituality and indigenous traditions, and how this initially made accepting her abilities challenging for Anita. The two also explore how Anita's childhood experience of molestation became an inspiration behind her campaign, Zero F's Given, which aims to raise awareness and help survivors heal from sexual trauma, find their voice, and reclaim their power.

In recognition of BIPOC Mental Health month, it’s important to recognize that traditional mental health care solutions do not take into account all of the self-affirming, healing practices that exist within Black, Brown, Indigenous, and other communities of color. These tools, systems, and practices are valid, valuable choices that people of color can make to support their own mental health and well-being. In this Coach Chat episode, we hear from Chandra Roxanne about the Community Healing Network, an organization that exists to reinforce these self-affirming beliefs.
CHN hosts Ubuntu Healing and Emotional Emancipation Circles where Black people can gather and talk about what’s ailing them, not just externally, but what’s going on inside. In the episode, you'll learn more about the magic and renewal that occurs within these safe spaces. Chandra explains the meaning of emotional emancipation as well as why emotional resilience and self-reflection are key to Black liberation.
Chandra shares the mission of CHN to unravel and reject the lie of white superiority and Black inferiority on which the lie of white supremacy rests. She and Coach Colette reflect on the power of Black joy, and the enriching capability of African ancestry to renew Black minds, bodies, and spirits. The two also discuss the detrimental ways racism impacts BIPOC mental health and the importance of this impact finally being acknowledged more widely.

When you hear the name, Ida B. Wells, what comes to mind? Journalist? Suffragist? Civil rights pioneer? How about a dangerous Negro agitator? This was just one of the terms used to describe Ida B. Wells back in her day because she was intent on speaking truth to power and holding a mirror to the Black experience of that time. In this Coach Chat episode, Coach Colette has the privilege of speaking with Michelle Duster, author ofIda B. The Queen: The Extraordinary Life and Legacy of Ida B. Wells, and great-granddaughter of Ida B. Wells.
She’s an author and educator who has written, edited or contributed to numerous articles and 16 books. Michelle provides us an in-depth look into current efforts to commemorate Ida B. Wells: a street and a monument in Ida's honor in Chicago, a statue of Ida in Memphis, and a mural of Chicago suffragists, to name a few. Coach Colette and Michelle also reflect on current Black women leaders and revolutionaries who carry on Ida's legacy of speaking truth to power. Whether you're a history buff, racial justice or feminist activist, or just interested in hearing from a powerful public historian, this episode is for you!

Do you ever hear about a woman or person of color who is the "first" to accomplish a major milestone in an industry, and think: "Really, in 2021?" Well, our Coach Chat guest is no stranger to being first. Leang Chung was the first in her family to receive a Bachelor's degree, the first to have a job with an annual salary versus an hourly wage, and the first to become a corporate executive. It was these experiences of being "first" that inspired her to found her startup Pelora Stack, to help other underrepresented early-stage founders, mid-career women, and non-binary people prepare for their "firsts".
This Coach Chat conversation is the perfect culmination of Mental Health Awareness and Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage months. You'll hear Coach Colette and Leang discuss how she was born into a refugee family from Cambodia and how her family values helped shape her perspective. Leang speaks candidly about the bias she faced early in her professional career, as well as her journey to discover her personal brand, learn how to communicate it, and how to create personal boundaries. She shares the difficulty of responding to microaggressions in the moment as an introvert. The two also discuss the detrimental mental health impacts on AAPI people that result from internalizing negative messages and battling stereotypes like the so-called "model minority" myth. Whether you're experiencing a first in your career or business, or if you're dealing with and processing racial trauma, you'll gain insights from this conversation.

As today is the one-year anniversary of George Floyd's murder, Coach Colette speaks in this episode on the topic of trauma. Research shows that after the killing of George Floyd, rates of anxiety and depression for Black and Asian Americans increased between 34 and 41 percentage points. How do you process and heal from trauma? Clearly, one doesn't need to be personally connected to the victims of violence to feel its damaging effects. Coach Colette discusses the importance of acknowledging what has happened instead of suppressing it and being honest with yourself. She also advises you to not compare your experiences and healing journey with others.
Additionally, it is key to take care of both your mind and body— whether that is through movement, breathwork, EFT tapping, focusing on your sleep hygiene, or meditation. Have you found a support network that encourages you in your healing process? Be sure to keep in mind that asking for help is a sign of strength. You deserve grace and patience during a difficult healing process.
Coach Colette appreciates you tuning in to the May Mental Health Month series. We hope you've learned to prioritize the steps it takes to preserve your mental health and foster resilience.

How do you usually release your anger? Have you identified ways to work through anger and frustration, or do you find yourself bottling them up? In today's episode, Coach Colette discusses the distinction between minor daily frustrations and more sustained or systemic issues. She also validates the anger that many people of color feel towards ongoing racial violence and oppression, anger that is often gaslit by others and the media. Coach Colette provides some advice to help you release your anger through different activities and movements, learn and identify your triggers, and ask for help.

Did you know that on average, people spend only 15 minutes a day on health-related self-care? For this episode of Mental Health Month, during Women's Health Week, Coach Colette discusses self-care and self-compassion. What makes you feel grounded? She encourages you first to consider how you want to feel to help you decide what nourishing activities you want to take on.
Coach Colette also speaks to the importance of being kind to yourself, especially for women of color who may be internalizing negative stereotypes and perceptions perpetuated by the media. Are you saying no when you don't want to do something, even if you feel pressure to say yes? Are you setting boundaries in your relationships? Are you protecting your energy? All of these are important aspects of self-compassion, and as Audre Lorde calls it, self-preservation.
We're excited to share that Coach Colette has a NEW mental health resource— the 7-Days of Self-Care e-Journal that includes checklists, suggested actions, and worksheets to help track your progress on your self-care journey. If you need to find new ways to take care of yourself and a getaway from chaos at work, home, or in your own mind, then this journal could be a great resource for you! Get your journal here.

Have you ever heard of "languishing"? As we reach the end of Stress Awareness Month, in this week's episode, Coach Colette discusses a recent NY Times article by organizational psychologist, Adam Grant. In the article, Grant introduces the term, "languishing", as a possible description of how you might be feeling lately. The idea of languishing— a void between depression and flourishing, or a lack of total wellbeing— has resonated with many, including Coach Colette. She uses this episode to provide some advice for re-centering and gaining a little motivation. It could be physical activities or more mentally-stimulating activities— anything to get your body or mind moving and your soul more grounded. What's your go-to activity to ground yourself when you find yourself languishing?
Coach Colette gets real with you in this week's Unplugged segment— she acknowledges the way languishing has impacted her professionally, mentally, and emotionally. She's been feeling disconnected from her regular self-care habits and is seeking out new ways to get into that flow state. As May is Mental Health Awareness Month, Coach Colette will be introducing a plethora of ideas in the coming weeks to revitalize your own self-care habits. And, if you're in a place where the weather is warming up, why not take some of those practices outside? What self-care practices no longer serve you? How can you reflect on those habits and adjust them to feel your best?

Did you know that communities of color are drastically more impacted by environmental issues than their white counterparts? As yesterday was Earth Day, Coach Colette uses this week's episode to speak about environmental racism. She discusses the initial definition by Benjamin Chavis in 1982, as well as findings from a 2007 study that show just how unfairly the consequences of environmental pollution are distributed. Flint, Michigan, the lower Rio Grande Valley, and Guiyu, China are just a few examples of the way communities of color face serious health complications as a result of systemic racism and the selfishness and neglect of those in power.
How are you working to heal from the heaviness of the terrible instances of violence as well as the anxiety and anticipation of the trial? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette reflects on the guilty verdict in Derek Chauvin's trial earlier this week, and the heart-wrenching news of Ma'Khia Bryant's murder just a half hour before the verdict was released. She considers a statement from Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison that differentiates justice from accountability, which lines up with the way she's been processing these events. Coach Colette advises you to allow yourself time to process, grieve, reflect, and heal yourself.

Did you know that this week is Black Maternal Health Week? Black Maternal Health Week was established in 2018 by the Black Mamas Matter Alliance and was created to promote education and advocacy around the experiences of Black Mamas. This year's theme is "Black Mamas Matter: Claiming Our Power, Resilience, & Liberation". In this week's episode, Coach Colette refers back to a live Let's Talk episode from March 2020 with Nana Eyeson-Akiwowo and Anthonia Akitunde about Black motherhood (Let's Talk: Black Motherhood). She considers how Black women are particularly vulnerable to both pregnancy-related deaths and complications of COVID-19. Conversations around maternal mortality largely focus on medical causes of death, while ignoring the root cause of racial disparities in healthcare: systemic racism. Be sure to check out the Black Maternal Health Virtual Conference going on today and tomorrow, April 16th-17th.
This week, another innocent Black person was shot by the police: 20 year-old Daunte Wright in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. Coach Colette reflects on a Tweet that resonated with her about the ongoing, deadly crisis of police brutality. She encourages you to be mindful of your media consumption during such a difficult time— it is important to step off social media if it is compromising your wellbeing, and be sure not to deny your feelings. How do you practice self-care? Meditation, yoga, EFT-tapping, breathwork? Now, especially, Coach Colette advises you to nourish and take care of yourself. What in your life causes you stress? April is Stress Awareness Month— a little ironic considering the year-long pandemic that's been plaguing us. In this week's episode, Coach Colette advises you to take stock of your stress triggers, and consider how stress manifests in your mind and body. How do you think about a stressful situation? Do you create stories in your mind that amplify your worries? It is important to think back to past stressful experiences and remember how you've gotten through them. What methods do you use to relieve your stress? Do you spend time in nature, journal, use essential oils, or practice EFT-tapping?
We know that right now, communities of color, in particular, are dealing with many layers of stress, so it's especially important for you to take time for yourself and consider limiting the amount of possibly triggering news and media you consume. In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette discusses her thoughts on preparing for re-opening— going back to in-person co-working spaces, social events, and workshops. As she is still waiting to get her vaccine, she's not quite ready to be "re-opening" her own life and recognizes her privilege in being able to adjust to in-person work at her own pace. How eager are you to go back to in-person work? What are you considering as you make this decision?

Did you know that April is National African-American Women's Fitness Month? As today happens to be National Walk to Work Day, Coach Colette uses this episode to illustrate how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our levels of physical activity, and how Black women are particularly vulnerable. She also provides some tips for getting your body moving more. What is your favorite way to get moving?
In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette reflects on our reliance on Zoom and the internet, as well as how an increasing number of people are getting vaccinated. How are you feeling about moving towards a more "normal", post-pandemic life? What has changed internally for you in the past year? What are you looking forward to getting back to doing, and what have you not missed? What accomplishments have you had and how do you want to build off them? How comfortable are you with being alone? How has the pandemic impacted that comfort level? Today is National Solitude Day. In this week’s Financial Fridays episode, Coach Colette discusses how she’s been experiencing a lot more alone time than usual, due to the pandemic. She reminds you of how beneficial alone time can be for your mental health. Solitude provides you with an opportunity to reflect, ground yourself, think deeply, and be grateful. How can you find a safe space this weekend to be alone, quiet, and reflective?
In this week’s Unplugged segment, Colette acknowledges Tuesday’s tragedy in Colorado, as well as some recent personal and professional setbacks. She describes four of the 7 Attitudes of Mindfulness that she’s come back to often this week— non-striving, acceptance, patience, and letting go.

if you're living in the Northern Hemisphere, tomorrow marks the Spring Equinox. Given the challenging times we've had this week, let alone this past year, it can be a good time for self-reflection and consideration. What is it that you hope to accomplish or bring into reality during the rest of the year? It’s also a great time to think about spring cleaning, whether that is de-cluttering your home space, or organizing the files on your computer or phone. How can you let go of those things that are no longer serving you?
In light of the tragic loss and violence in North Georgia, we stand in grief and solidarity with the Asian-American Pacific Islander communities. In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares insights from the nation’s leading coalition documenting and addressing anti-Asian hate and discrimination, Stop AAPI Hate. Did you know that there were 3,795 incidents of anti-Asian hate reported from March 19th, 2020 to February 28th, 2021? Or, that women reported hate incidents twice more than men? The shootings that happened this week shined a light on the increasing violence against Asian-Americans in this country and around the world. How will you choose to challenge hate, discrimination, misogyny, xenophobia, and white supremacy wherever you see it?

Tomorrow marks one year since Breonna Taylor was killed in her home. She was an award-winning EMT and first responder in Louisville, Kentucky. On the night of March 13th, the Louisville Metro Police executed a no-knock warrant and sprayed her home with 20 rounds of bullets, shooting Breonna eight times and killing her in her bed. In this episode of Financial Fridays, we share more about actions that still are being demanded of the Mayor and LMPD by her mother Tamika Palmer, one year later. By now, you've probably seen the interview by Oprah of Meghan and Harry. Did you have a visceral reaction while hearing of Meghan's trauma? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares her experience of watching the interview and then explores the concept of misogynoir. It's a term coined by feminist scholar, writer, and activist Moya Bailey in 2008 to describe the specific type of misogyny rooted in racism faced by Black women. She poses questions such as: How can you #ChoosetoChallenge misogynoir and continue the fight to eradicate it? As Black women, how do we continue to process and heal from the impacts of misogynoir? Monday, March 8th is International Women’s Day, a day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It’s also a day that signifies a call to action to accelerate gender parity in all spheres, whether that be in politics, in the workplace, in the media, anywhere. This year's theme is #ChoosetoChallenge -- a signal to call out inequity wherever you see it. In this week's Financial Fridays episode, you'll hear about the important theory of intersectionality, coined by Kimberle Williams Crenshaw in 1989 to describe the impact of bias and discrimination on our social identities.
March marks another milestone. It’s been 1 year since the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic. In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette reflects on the year and shares her personal and professional silver linings in the cloud of the pandemic. She also encourages you to reflect by proposing some questions. How have you flexed your resilience muscles? As you look back, it’s an opportunity to harvest those lessons learned and to plant new seeds for what you would like to create and manifest going forward.

Nine years ago today, on February 26th, 2012, Trayvon Martin, an unarmed 17-year-old young Black man, was shot and killed in Sanford, Florida. This is a day to remember that we are still in the fight for social justice and equality. Since the death of their son, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin have committed their lives to transform tragedy into change. They created The Trayvon Martin Foundation to empower others to become catalysts for social change. In this week's episode of Financial Fridays, we pay tribute to Trayvon's legacy, and to those unarmed Black men and women who have been fatally shot by police officers nationwide since 2015 (at least 135 lives lost).

Did you know that just 2% of the population is what can be considered a true multi-tasker or so-called super-tasker? With the pandemic, it's likely that you've been doing nearly everything from home -- working, exercising, socializing, cleaning. How often do you focus on just one thing at a time? You might think that multitasking makes you more efficient when it is precisely the opposite. Multitasking actually makes it more difficult for you to focus, which means it’s easier for you to make mistakes; therefore, making it harder for you to be productive overall. In this week's Financial Friday, you hear ideas on how to be more single-focused and conscious in your activities.
Have you ever had a moment when you realized that you not only wanted to do something but that you couldn’t NOT do it? What did that feel like inside? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares a personal founder's story about being vulnerable and asking for help to avoid missing out on an exciting opportunity for Libbie. You'll hear how the experience confirmed her desire and reignited her passion. Perhaps, you'll gain some insights on how to jumpstart your own enthusiasm -- personally or professionally.

Contributions to the field of mental health by Black practitioners have been long overlooked. In this week's Financial Fridays episode, you'll learn more about Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller, one of the first known Black psychiatrists. Solomon Fuller’s major contribution was to the growing clinical knowledge of Alzheimer’s disease. In 1903, he was one of the five students chosen by Alois Alzheimer to do research at the Royal Psychiatric Hospital at the University of Munich in Germany. While practicing at Westborough State Mental Hospital in Westborough, Massachusetts, Dr. Fuller performed ground-breaking research on the physical changes to the brains of Alzheimer's patients.

Studies have shown that merely 1% of venture-backed startup founders are Black, despite the fact that Black people make up over 13% of the US population. And it’s even worse for Black female founders, who receive less than 1% of venture funding. In the third quarter of 2020, over 1,300 startups raised between $500,000 and $20,000,000. Just 31 of them were Black founders. Today, only 3% of venture capital investors are Black.
That's what makes this first Coach Chat episode of 2021 even more exceptional! This conversation is with Shila Nieves Burney, the Founding and Managing Partner of Zane Venture Fund. Zane is a woman-led venture capital fund investing in the $4 trillion untapped market of diverse startups by funding undercapitalized founders and balancing the distribution of venture dollars. Zane invests in seed and early-stage companies, led by diverse founders and teams, building tech-enabled solutions primarily in the Southeast and across the U.S. Additionally, Zane Access provides early-stage founders led by diverse teams access to cross-functional experts, services, resources, and training critical to accelerating their growth.
Tune into this episode to hear Coach Colette and Shila dispel the myths about venture capital and refute the excuses given for the lack of diversity on both sides of the entrepreneurial spectrum. You'll also discover Shila's personal story of how she transitioned from being an entrepreneur founder to becoming a fund manager. She also shares tips for preparing to pitch to potential investors.

Yesterday was the first full moon of 2021, also nicknamed the full Wolf Moon. The full moon is an excellent time for releasing, letting go, and clearing out the things that are no longer serving you. What are the habits, beliefs, tasks, or even people that are no longer serving you? In this week's episode of Financial Fridays, gain some suggestions to explore these aspects as it relates to your finances and other areas of your life including your health and relationships. With the moon in Leo, consider: where can you bring out that roar of the lion (or that howl of the wolf) to fully express your deepest desires?
How much time have you spent alone during the pandemic? How has it impacted your mental health and wellbeing? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette explores loneliness and the different experiences of BIPOC women. For women of color, our loneliness, anxiety, and depression often looks different than for white women. Our tears, grief, and sadness are not greeted with the same level of compassion as the tears, grief, or loss of our white counterparts. So, we tend to build up a resistance and not speak about the things that are bothering us. Coach Colette shares statements from the Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale so you can rate yourself and examine your level of loneliness.

Even though we may be celebrating the holiday on Monday, today is the actual birthday of civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr. In this week's Financial Fridays episode, Coach Colette reads excerpts of the momentous “I Have a Dream” speech delivered on August 28th, 1963 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. In light of recent events, it’s imperative that we recall his words and that we examine the condition of our republic today. Take some time to reflect on his message, his vision, and consider: What is it that you can do today to help further his dream?
What have you been taught to believe about your value at work, in the world, in your family, in your relationships? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette offers some prompts to guide you in your inner reflection on self-worth to help set intentions for the New Year. What might happen if you allowed yourself to challenge the myth to completely reinvent yourself for the New Year? What if instead of the usual trope, you instead chose to invoke a new mantra: New Year, Same You, New Habits? Or New Year, Same You, New Intentions? This could unburden you and reinforce the fact that you can develop new habits while still appreciating and celebrating all that you are right now. In this week's Financial Fridays episode, you'll hear some prompts to help you envision what new habits and intentions you want to create for your financial wellbeing.
In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares some candid reflections on recent events. During the week that pro-Trump, white-supremacist terrorists stormed the US Capitol, Rev. Raphael Warnock also was elected as the first Black senator to represent Georgia. We don’t want to miss the opportunity to celebrate this accomplishment, achieved in no small part by change agents like Stacey Abrams, who mobilized thousands of Black voters in Georgia to come out and vote. If you have been triggered by the incidents that you have witnessed this week, build in time for self-care. Take some ME-time, and know that not being okay is okay. We've got your back.

We wish a Merry Christmas to all listeners who are celebrating today. In this week’s episode of Financial Fridays, we also share a message about Kwanzaa, which begins tomorrow December 26th and ends next Friday, January 1st. This African-American and Pan-African holiday celebrates family, community, and culture. It was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, a professor of Africana studies. During Kwanzaa, activities are organized around the Seven Principles. Umoja or Unity is the first and foundational principle of Kwanzaa. We hope that during this holiday season of Kwanzaa that you are able to find ways to unite with family, friends, loved ones, and community.

In the Northern Hemisphere, we’ve been experiencing early sunsets, shorter days, and longer nights. Monday, December 21st marks the transition into longer days and shorter nights with the Winter Solstice. This week's Financial Fridays episode offers a preview of the celestial events on Monday. It’s been a dark year in many ways for many of us. Why not reflect on how you can let more light into your life. How are you allowing your light to shine?
Also on the 21st, the two largest planets in our solar system will appear to look like they are merging in the night sky. Astronomers are calling it The Great Conjunction of 2020. Conjunctions happen when two celestial objects appear to pass close to one another as they are seen from Earth. This will be the great conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn, forming what's being called the Christmas Star. It's been 800 years since this conjunction has happened at night, so you may want to take a peek!
What were your wins in 2020? What went well? What are you most proud of? With just two Fridays left in 2020, in this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares a few prompts to help you to reflect on the past year. You know when you start within and pause to reflect, it's then that you can tap into your deepest knowing. You can tap into your inner wisdom.

Yesterday was Human Rights Day. The theme this year is Recover Better. We know that the COVID-19 crisis has exposed gaps in poverty, equality, discrimination, environmental degradation, and human rights protection. While the virus itself does not discriminate, it has highlighted the fact that people who are poor, marginalized, excluded, and discriminated against are more likely to get sick and not access testing. They are more likely to suffer the loss of a job, home, or other fundamental rights. In this week's episode of Financial Fridays, we explore some of these issues and share the pledge you can take to Stand Up 4 Human Rights.
Do you have a morning ritual? Do you give yourself any amount of time at the start of the day that is just for you? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette offers a personal anecdote about her morning ritual, and what happened one day this week when she tried to skip ahead and ignore it. She also provides additional reflection questions to begin pondering about 2020 and ease into your planning for the New Year. This week the focus is on health and self-care. Did you know that December is Seasonal Depression Awareness Month? With the colder weather and the days getting shorter in the Northern Hemisphere, it's important to be aware of how well you are coping. In this week's Financial Friday's episode, you'll hear tips to help support your mental and physical wellbeing during this time.

Did you know that some consider the national holiday of Thanksgiving a reminder of the genocide and continued suffering of the Native American peoples? Participants in the Indigenous Day of Mourning honor Native ancestors and the struggles of Native peoples to survive today. In this week's Financial Fridays episode, we share two resources [Native-Land.ca and JeremyNative.com] to foster conversations about the history of colonialism, Indigenous history, and settler-Indigenous relations. Both sites encourage us to become more aware of the real lives, the real lived history of Indigenous peoples and nations during the long era of colonialism. One way of doing so is to acknowledge the names of the tribes that once inhabited the land on which you live, something you can do on the Native Land Digital website.
How did you commemorate the holiday? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares some anecdotes about her Vegan Virtual Thanksgiving! For what and for whom are you most grateful this year? It's really important to allow yourself time to reflect, time to pause and collect memories of gratitude and appreciation for yourself and for others. Did you know that November is National Diabetes Month? More than 88 million American adults have pre-diabetes, or blood sugar levels that are higher than normal, but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as Type 2 Diabetes. The percentages of US adults living with diagnosed or undiagnosed diabetes is 22% in the Latinx community, 20% in the Black community, and 19% in the Asian community. This is something that we need to take seriously. In this week's episode of Financial Fridays, we look at the broader implications of lifestyle choices and habits that can raise your risk of becoming pre-diabetic or of getting Type 2 Diabetes.
As Thanksgiving and the holidays approach, have you been thinking: What's the best way to celebrate? What’s the best way to gather in ways that are safe? To help alleviate feelings of confusion and doubt, as well as anxiety and fear, she also shares some EFT-Tapping exercises you can use to calm your nerves as you make decisions about the upcoming week.

In this week's Financial Fridays episode, Coach Colette will lead you through a Loving Kindness meditation to help you extend loving-kindness to yourself and extend loving-kindness to others.
Where were you when herstory was being made last Saturday? In this week's Unplugged segment, shares a personal anecdote about her experience learning of the news about Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris. She also provides commentary on an inspirational quote by Harris: "There will be people who say to you, ‘You are out of your lane.’ They are burdened by only having the capacity to see what has always been instead of what can be. How have been you navigating and managing your stress this week? Ironically, Wednesday was International Stress Awareness Day. Chronic or prolonged stress can impact your sleep, your digestion, your mood, your irritability, your blood pressure, your risk for heart disease, and your immune system. It really is important that you be mindful of how your body and your mind have been dealing with the uncertainty. This Financial Fridays episode shares some healthful coping techniques for dealing with election stress in particular, and stress in general.
Did you do anything to distract yourself from waiting for election results? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares an anecdote about experimenting on a chatbot building platform to learn more about coding. She describes the irony of how the misplacement of one comma or colon can derail a whole line of code. If we extrapolate that to our current situation, we are literally counting votes one by one, and each one of those votes can make the difference. If anything, the closeness of the race has renewed her commitment to building Libbie to support Black and Brown women in the fight for justice, and the fight for mental and physical wellbeing.

Have you heard the phrase: once in a blue moon? There will be a blue moon on October 31, Halloween night. Tomorrow's Full Moon is also considered both the Harvest Moon because it appears nearest to the Fall Equinox, as well as the Hunter's Moon. The full moon is a great time for releasing things that no longer serve you. What do you wish to release?
The Halloween tradition is typically about trick or treating. Since 2020 has been nothing but tricks, why not focus on the treats. What are some ways that you can treat yourself this weekend? Perhaps include some pumpkin in your self-care routine to stay on the theme!
Have you made your plans to vote? In this week’s Unplugged segment, Coach Colette talks about her experience of early voting. Did you know that there are still discriminatory policies like voter I.D. laws, cuts to early voting, polling place closures, and limits to pre-registration? Most of the policies impact marginalized communities; whether that be people of color, people who have been formerly incarcerated, or other marginalized groups. This election is important, so make sure you stay informed and involved. At the same time, ensure that you balance how much news you are watching because over-consumption can affect your mental health and wellbeing.

Did you know that loneliness makes you more likely to fall ill? It seems to prompt the chronic release of hormones that suppress healthy immune function. Biochemical changes from loneliness can accelerate the spread of cancer, hasten heart disease, and accelerate the onset of Alzheimer’s. The ironic part is that loneliness is subjective. No two people experience separation or social distancing in the same way. Making new friends as an adult was already complicated. Now, when you add in the pandemic, how are you supposed to retain your most important relationships?
That's why we reached out to Kat Vellos -- connection coach, user experience designer, and author of two books on adult friendships. In this episode of Coach Chat, Kat speaks with Coach Colette about the importance of forming new friendships as well as developing strong connections with your existing contacts. If you were in an emergency and needed support, besides your family, who would you call? How many people could you count on within a 2-5 block radius of your home? You’ll hear practical strategies you can use to strengthen your real-life social network, based on the work that Kat does to help people form more authentic relationships.

Human beings are wired for relationships. We thrive most when we’re connected and we feel lonelier when we're disconnected. In 2020, there have been lots of reasons why you may not be as in close proximity with friends, family, and loved ones. Sunday is National I Care About You Day. It's a great time to show the special people in your life that you care and appreciate them by calling or sending a text. Good relationships can promote better healing. Healthy relationships set the perfect tone for an overall healthy lifestyle, and they can give you a greater sense of purpose.
What is your definition of independence? You may have seen the memes or posts this week about extreme independence being a trauma response. In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette describes her experience of independence as an only child and solopreneur. She describes the comfort of being able to rely on herself as opposed to the risk and vulnerability of letting people know when she needs help. Do you tend to overcompensate, to do everything yourself, to take it all on, and not ask for help? Everyone needs help at times and there is no shame in asking for it. If you're interested in reading the blog post about ultra-independence, click here.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and today is National Mammography Day. Did you know that breast cancer is the most common cancer among women? More than 250,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the US, and more than 40,000 women die from it. The good news is that there are over 3.3 million breast cancer survivors in the United States. Death rates from breast cancer have been going down since 1990 due to a number of factors. Chief among those factors is early detection.
Are you actively doing self-breast exams to check for indications of lumps? It is important to examine your body to be aware of any changes. In this week's episode of Financial Fridays, we explore the benefits of having a mammogram, which is an x-ray that allows a qualified specialist to examine the breast tissue for any suspicious areas. Mammograms can often show a breast lump before you can feel it with your fingers.
Have you ever experienced being triggered by a small inconvenience, only to have it turn into an intense emotional reaction? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares personal anecdotes about not fully grieving the loss of Summer. There's so much happening in our world today with the pandemic, racial and social unrest, and the political landscape. Have you been giving yourself time to process, feel, and heal any anxiety or stress? If not, beware -- it can pop up and surface in ways that you may not expect.

October is a month in which there is much to recognize and commemorate. We'll start the month with a focus on Emotional Wellness and Emotional Intelligence Awareness. Emotional Intelligence has been shown to improve mental health, physical health, and other professional pursuits. A lower EI can hinder your relationships with others and can affect the way you relate with yourself.
In this episode of Financial Fridays, Coach Colette introduces the four domains of EI: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Paying close attention to the first domains relating to the self, she shares probing questions to help you reflect on how to become more self-aware, and have more self-regulation. This is discussed within the context of our current challenges of living in the pandemic and with rampant racial and social injustices.
Yesterday was the first full moon of this month in Aries. Full moons can be a great time to release what no longer serves you. Can you start to see what’s been holding you back, find ways to move into transformation, and to get more aligned? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares some astrological insights from Virginia Rosenberg to help you discover lessons from the lunar energy. She also shares a personal anecdote of how she used her healing tools to help release anxiety and fear due to a panic attack during the night.

Did you know that Latinx is the second largest population in the United States? In 2001, Latinx founders made up 6.5% of all founders; while in 2019 they grew to 15% making theirs the fastest growing demographic launching companies. In the midst of Hispanic / Latinx Heritage Month, we're excited to connect with a Latina founder who is building a global community where like-hearted women come to heal, rise, and lead.
In this episode of Coach Chat, you'll meet Christine Gutierrez, a licensed spiritual therapist and author of: I Am Diosa: A Journey to Healing Deep, Loving Yourself, and Coming Back Home to Soul. As a healer, Christine uses modern therapy and ancient wisdom to help her clients channel in wisdom from higher realms. With a foundation of self-love, she facilitates supportive experiences and transformational retreats such as her annual Diosa Retreat in Puerto Rico, as well as the Diosa Tribe.
Cosmic Christine shares with Coach Colette how she discovered her mission to help heal the world, and how her definition of Diosa disrupts traditional narratives about femininity, spirituality, and wellness. These two healers also discuss the importance of women of color having their own safe spaces to share their stories, heal from trauma, and reclaim their self-worth.

Tuesday was the first day of Fall in the Northern hemisphere. Depending on where you live, temperatures may be starting to cool down, and leaves may be beginning to fall off the trees. The Fall equinox offers us the opportunity to examine what you have harvested thus far and to reflect upon your abundance. How you can appreciate the Fall season. And, while you may be ready to finish 2020 as fast as you can, what are your intentions for this last quarter? What would you like to manifest as we approach the end of the year?
What would it feel like to be scared all of the time? What do you think it would do to your mental health and physical well-being? These are questions that Coach Colette asked of potential investors during her recent pitch of Libbie, our upcoming mental health chatbot to support women of color dealing with anxiety, stress, and trauma. This week's Unplugged segment includes a personal anecdote about the challenge of responding to investors who ask: "Why to focus just on women of color?" In light of this week's disturbing news about the ongoing lack of justice for Breonna Taylor, the answer seems obvious to many. Coach Colette again articulates her reasoning for intentionally focusing on helping women of color to heal and thrive.

Did you know that 1980 was the first year that the US Census offered Hispanic as an option to describe one's ethnic identity? In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month and Mexican Independence Day, this episode of Financial Friday focuses on the diverse cultural identities within the Hispanic and Latinx communities. We cannot ignore the fact that the word "Hispanic" does not reflect the diverse multinational, multicultural, and multilingual identities. It can be said that those who are not Hispanic (or Black for that matter) have gained from erasing experiences of the diverse range of cultural identities, whether they be Chicano, Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, or other identities. This episode also celebrates the contributions that Latinx entrepreneurs are making to the US economy.
Have you been feeling tired, overwhelmed? This week was the New Moon in Virgo. In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares a personal anecdote about being more specific about what it was that she needed to heal this week. This New Moon can help you to examine all of the unprocessed, undealt with wounds; to look at the areas in which your energy is being drained; to look at where you may have been overextending yourself; to look at where you've been fighting against things, as opposed to allowing and receiving.

Did you know that 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year? Or, that suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10-34? Black and Latinx youth may experience even higher rates of some psychiatric distress due to a number of environmental challenges that place them at risk, including a lack of access to mental health services.
Too often, it seems like mental health and well-being is perceived to be something that only a privileged few get to achieve. We don't believe this -- and neither does our guest Dr. Alfiee Breland-Noble. She’s the founder of the mental health nonprofit The AAKOMA Project, which provides mental health outreach and care for youth of color.
Given that 50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24, the team has its work cut out for them. In this Coach Chat episode, Coach Colette talks with Dr. Alfiee about the mental health issues that young adults are facing, particularly in marginalized communities. As a psychologist and researcher, she presents strategies to help reduce mental health disparities in underserved populations. The two also discuss how to combat cultural stigmas and normalize the conversation around mental health across different generations.

Today is a National Day of Service and Remembrance to ensure that we strive to make our world a better place, and pay tribute to those who lost their lives on September 11th. In this episode of Financial Fridays, we share some of the 11 Good Deeds suggested by 911Day.org that you can consider taking on to demonstrate your recognition of this important day in our history.
How often when someone asks you: "How are you?" do you respond honestly? Do you share what's really going on with you? To close out the Black Business month, we take a journey back in time. Did you know that long before Airbnb there was The Negro Motorist Green Book? First published in 1936, the Green Book was the innovation of a Harlem-based postal carrier named Victor Hugo Green. Because of the discrimination Black people faced whenever they ventured outside their neighborhoods, Black travelers often couldn’t find safe places to eat and sleep. Victor Hugo Green sought to solve this problem. By the early 1940s, the Green Book listed thousands of establishments from across the country, all of them either Black-owned or verified to be non-discriminatory.
In this episode of Financial Fridays, hear how he expanded listings (the first edition only covered hotels and restaurants in the New York area) by leveraging information from fellow postal workers and offering cash payments to readers for useful information. Coach Colette draws parallels between Green's efforts in crowdsourcing and sponsorship with efforts made by current Black innovators and entrepreneurs to stimulate you to keep pursuing your dreams.
Did you know that JOY is an act of RESISTANCE? Are you struggling to find your joy these days? In this week's Unplugged segment, you'll get some motivation as you hear an excerpt from the poem The Telly Cycle by the prolific author, Toi Derricotte. It contains a reference to the love between a Black woman and a fish named Telly. Learn more about the personal connection to this narrative for Coach Colette and her fish Stripe, particularly as she prepares to celebrate her birthday, remaining grateful for the years she's had on this Earth as a Black woman in America.

In recognition of Black Business Month, this episode of Financial Fridays continues our focus on US Black businesses. According to digitalundivided, 82% of Black business owners report that they have experienced a decrease or loss of revenue due to COVID-19. Black-owned businesses are more likely to be based in so-called COVID-19 "hot spots," meaning they are operating in communities with: longer forced closures, more COVID-19 symptoms, more social distancing, and fewer customers.
Reports indicate that the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) did not support businesses in COVID-19 "hot spots." Nationally, just 2% of the hundreds of billions of dollars of CARES Act PPP loans went to Black-owned businesses. In New York City, only 7% of Bronx businesses and 11% of Queens businesses received PPP funding. The overwhelming majority of Black business owners — nearly 3 out of 4 — reported that they needed emergency funding immediately in order to survive this pandemic.
“Tell me about your little business.” “Well, you know the projects that they work on tend to be on the high end.” In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette shares a recent virtual networking interaction in which the other person (a white man) uttered these two remarks during their conversation. In this discussion on implicit bias and microaggressions, she encourages us to ponder the question: Would he have used that same diminutive language if he had been speaking to another white man? To a white woman?

Did you know that Black-owned businesses have created over 1 million jobs and generated over $165 billion in revenue? As we're still celebrating Black Business Month, we continue our history lesson on Black entrepreneurship in the US. Black Americans have a long and rich history of entrepreneurship. Within two decades of the abolition of slavery, Black people established several thousand successful businesses that thrived in exclusively Black communities, such as the Black Wall Street of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
In this week's Financial Friday episode, we explore the barriers to Black business ownership. For example, a recent study conducted by a team of researchers from the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, Utah State University, Brigham Young University, Rutgers University, and Lubin Research found that banks were three times more likely to request follow-up appointments with white business owners than better-qualified Black business owners, and the Black business owners were subjected to far greater personal and financial scrutiny compared to their equal or less creditworthy white counterparts. Coach Colette also discusses how Black entrepreneurs have been innovators in the use of technology and social media to grow and scale their businesses.
In the Unplugged segment, Coach Colette discusses duality and intersectionality. In one week, we experienced the historic moment of Senator Kamala Harris being nominated for Vice President. We also recognized Black Women’s Equal Pay Day, which marks the fact that Black women on average earn just $.62 for the $1.00 that an average white man earns in the US. It takes an extra 8 months and 13 days to earn the same amount. These two instances show us how far we have come, and at the same time, how far we still have to go.

Did you know that August -- in addition to being Coach Colette's birthday month -- is Black Business month? In this episode of Financial Fridays, we kick off with some results from a 2020 survey of over 3,100 small business and franchise owners in the US by Guidant Financial and the Small Business Trends Alliance.
This survey found that Black-owned businesses exist across all industries, with the top industry category being Business Services at 20%. The next most popular industry categories were tied at 9%: 1) Retail; 2) Health, Beauty and Fitness Services; and 3) Restaurant or Food Services. The fifth most popular industry according to the survey was Construction and Contracting at 8%. While Black entrepreneurs were 30% more likely than the average of all surveyed small business owners to solely operate their businesses, there was a 19% decrease in Black solopreneurs from 2019. This survey showed that 45% of Black-owned businesses have 2-5 employees.
We know that due to the COVID-19 pandemic and lock-down that a number of Black-owned businesses have been severely impacted financially. It will be really interesting to see how this data shifts next year based on all that we are experiencing now.
What do you do when someone questions your integrity or intention? In this week's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette candidly shares a recent experience in her business. In this week's episode Financial Fridays, we close out BIPOC Mental Health Month with an upbeat history lesson on Black pioneers in mental health. Our first is Dr. Maxie Clarence Maultsby, the founder of the psychotherapeutic method of rational behavioral therapy. His technique of cognitive-behavioral therapy and counseling was the first comprehensive, short-term, culture and drug-free technique of psychotherapy that produced long-term therapeutic results. Next is Mamie Phipps Clark, whose groundbreaking research on the impact of race on Child Development was influential in desegregation efforts, including the Brown vs. Board of Education decision in 1954.
A third mental health pioneer is Jacki McKinney, a family advocate specializing in issues affecting African-American women and their children and a founding member of the National People of Color Consumer/Survivor Network. And, finally, there is Linda James Myers, whose work focuses on healing practices and psychotherapeutic processes at the intersection of race, gender and class.
Have you found your good trouble? In this week's episode of Unplugged, Coach Colette shares some recent professional setbacks along with how she has maintained her pursuit of good trouble during these past five months of lockdown and racial uprising. She has felt the need to double down on her mission to help BIPOC leaders and women to heal from trauma. Coach Colette also shares inspiring quotes from Rep. John Lewis in an op-ed for the New York Times he requested to be published on the day of his funeral.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) being signed into law. And yet, one can ponder why over 1 billion people with "disabilities" are often overlooked in the Diversity & Inclusion conversation. Given this momentous occasion, now is the perfect time for this episode of Coach Chat. It features Tiffany Yu, who is the founder of Diversability, an award-winning social enterprise dedicated to raising disability awareness and reshaping our conceptions of ability. The word "disabilities" is said to be associated with the past and people's negative experiences with institutions. While the term Diversability embraces the uniqueness and potential in every human being, disabled or non-disabled. By celebrating diverse disability experiences through the power of community, Tiffany encourages us to consider: Can a "disability" be the reason for someone to belong rather than to be excluded? In this episode, you’ll hear Coach Colette and Tiffany discuss what it feels like to be seen, to be heard, to have your experiences validated; and what it feels like when that’s not the case. Did you know that following the COVID-19 outbreak in the US, there were nearly 1,500 reported incidents of anti-Asian racism in just one month? These included physical and verbal attacks as well as reports of anti-Asian discrimination in private businesses. Or, that in 2018 38% of Latinx people were verbally attacked for speaking Spanish, told to go back to their countries, called a racial slur or treated unfairly?
As we are in the midst of BIPOC Mental Health Month, today's Financial Fridays episode focuses on race-based traumatic stress. This refers to the mental and emotional injury caused by encounters with racial bias, ethnic discrimination, systemic racism, or hate crimes. It is similar to the experience of people who have dealt with other forms of PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder. It can be direct, or vicarious -- meaning witnessing the experience of others through pictures or videos of violent incidents.
"Well, I don't know if you covered it in the beginning, but I was wondering where you got your training?" This is a question that Coach Colette received from a white male participant in one of her recent EFT-Tapping webinars. While on the surface any question can seem innocent; however, reading between the lines can be a valuable skill to have. In today's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette talks about racial gaslighting. The official definition is: "the political, social, economic, and cultural process that perpetuates and normalizes a white supremacist reality through pathologizing those who resist." In this case, an attempt to question the legitimacy of a person and their qualifications based on racial identity.
Have you had the experience of being gaslighted? It doesn’t necessarily have to be connected to racial identity. This is a tactic that people use to manipulate others in personal relationships, in familial relationships, or in professional relationships. In this Financial Fridays episode, we continue our focus on BIPOC Mental Health awareness through the lens of COVID-19. The historic causes of mental health challenges in communities of color include: the legacy of racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, economic stressors, and systemic failures. The onset of the Coronavirus pandemic greatly amplified this distress for BIPOC communities.
Chronic stress can weaken immunity, making BIPOC populations more vulnerable to diseases like COVID-19 and the underlying health conditions that increase the risk of COVID-19. We must remain vigilant about creating culturally-competent mental health and wellness care, and to dismantle systemic and economic barriers that keep BIPOC communities locked in situations that are draining our collective resolve.
In the Unplugged segment, Coach Colette discusses initial results from our How Have You Been Coping? survey, in which people have shared the mental and physical effects of the pandemic and the lock-down. 70% of respondents indicate having feelings of anxiety or frustration; and 50% express feeling worried or stuck and not able to take action. We really want to know how you're doing with all of this uncertainty -- including debates about whether or not face masks can save lives! If you'd like to share your responses, complete our How Have You Been Coping? survey here.

Did you know that there are 573 federally recognized Native tribes in the United States? Or, that Indigenous people speak more than 200 different languages? In today's Financial Fridays, we continue our conversation on BIPOC Mental Health, with a focus on the "I" that stands for Indigenous or Native peoples. According to Mental Health America, Native and Indigenous people make up 1.3% of the US population. Of that segment, 19% or 827,000 people reported having a mental illness in the past year.
When we look at the mental health issues facing Native and Indigenous people, the lack of awareness about services that are available, as well as a lack of programs and providers that are sensitive to Native and Indigenous cultures can prevent them from seeking out treatment. They are much more likely to seek help from a spiritual or a traditional healer, than from more traditional medical sources. That's why having culturally-responsive and culturally-competent mental health care is so crucial.
Are you consciously aware that certain words or terms that you use could be considered offensive to others? With the renewed nationwide debate on racism, many Native leaders have seen this as an opportunity to reiterate the call to remove racially insensitive symbols in team names like the Washington Redskins in the NFL, and the Cleveland Indians in MLB. In today's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette describes a recent experience of discovering that a well-known term in EFT-Tapping has been shown to be offensive to Asian-American people.
She candidly expresses her discomfort learning that she had unknowingly used the term on several occasions, and her commitment to removing the term from her materials and future sessions. Tune in and we'll bet that you'll never think of karate in the same way again. If you'd like to share your responses or thoughts, send us a voice message here. The month of July is BIPOC Mental Health Awareness Month. The acronym stands for Black, Indigenous and People of Color. The goal is to bring attention to the trauma that stems from systemic oppression and racism that impacts communities of color. Trauma is connected to mental health on so many different levels. It comes both from present-day and historical occurrences. Subconsciously, BIPOC communities have been taught to devalue their mental faculties, and question their beauty and intelligence.
In this episode of Financial Fridays, we explore this as an opportunity to also speak about how resilient BIPOC communities are. Coach Colette offers suggestions to engage in self-care therapy, like EFT-Tapping and other avenues of therapy, that can help people to express the negative realities of white supremacy, and heal personal and historical trauma.
“When we finally stop asking America to love us and begin to love ourselves, we will prosper as a people.” This quote is by journalist and best-selling author, Bebe Moore Campbell, for whom this month was dedicated in 2008. Moore was an advocate for mental health who encapsulated the ideologies of self-love and self-care. Originally, it was called Minority Mental Health Month. That connotation conjures up negative images of lack and scarcity. When you love yourself FIRST, it steams rolls your confidence and grounds you. Your feet become roots into the Earth, and you can compare yourself to an allegorical tree. You may sway and bend; but it is going to take a strong gust of wind to snap or break you. In the Unplugged segment, Coach Colette suggests we concentrate on abundance and resilience, so we can stand strong as a collective and see ourselves in a positive light. This will help us to bring light and joy to one another.

How can we construct a framework for how the world perceives, interacts and embraces men and boys of color to shift us from the belief of "No, they can't." to "Yes, they can!"? In April of 2010, Brandon Frame answered this call in a way that would change the trajectory of his career and the lives of Black men and boys in America. He started TheBlackManCan, Inc., an award-winning nonprofit organization that is committed to the healthy and holistic development of Black men, boys and their communities. In addition to being its Chief Visionary Officer, Brandon also is Deputy Director of Social-Emotional Learning at The Urban Assembly.
In this Coach Chat episode, you'll hear how TBMC has evolved into a conscious social community that reflects positive images of Black boys and men of color. Brandon and Coach Colette unpack male privilege, and its impact on Black relationships. The two also discuss why it is critical to disrupt the hyper-masculine stereotypes of Black men to help young men and boys of color develop greater self-esteem.
As mentioned, to get a copy of Brandon's book, My First Tie, click here. Co-authored with Tanae Denean Eskridge,it's the second book in a children's book series, The Adventures Of Coach & Little Dell. Donate $25 to help send a young Black man to the Building a Better Brother Summit, click here.

This is the last Friday in June. We are approaching July 1, which will mark the end of the first half of 2020. If you were to take a look at the intentions and goals that you set at the beginning of the year, what have you already manifested? What would you still like to manifest? Have your intentions or goals shifted based on what's been happening in the world? In this episode of Financial Fridays, we focus on this midpoint. Now is a great opportunity to take some time to reflect on where you are now, where you would like to be, and what you would like to accomplish over the next three months.
Just one week after Juneteenth, and the social media displays by many companies, one can wonder how things are shifting inside the workplace. In today's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette discusses the concept of allyship. She shares a personal anecdote about a recent experience that could be described by the hashtag #WorkingWhileBlack. Being an ally really does require proactive action. For example, saying that you're not racist or that you're not homophobic; saying that you want to help but don't know how, is not action that has a tangible impact. What does allyship mean to you? If you'd like to share your responses or thoughts, send us a message here.

Today marks the 155th anniversary of Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865 Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. Note that this was 2.5 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863.
In this week's Financial Fridays episode, we discuss this historical commemoration. In the early years, little interest existed outside the black community to participate in the celebrations. In some cases, there was explicit resistance by barring the use of public property for the festivities. Today, 47 of the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia have recognized Juneteenth as either a state holiday or day of observance. The three states that do not recognize Juneteenth are Hawaii, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
In the Unplugged segment, Coach Colette discusses FREEDOM. What does FREEDOM mean to you? How do you feel when you notice other people's freedom being restricted or limited? Do you choose to respond, or stay silent? This is a good time as Sukhtej suggests to take action. If you're seeking suggestions, visit here.⠀

Did you know that in 1965, 100 years after Emancipation, black Americans were more than 10% of the population, but held less than 2% of the wealth in the US, and less than 0.1% of the wealth in stocks? Or that in 2016, the average black American family had total wealth of $17,600, about 1/10 the wealth of the average white American family, which stood at $171,000? It's been estimated that it could take 228 years for black Americans to reach the level of wealth white American households enjoy today.
In this week's Financial Fridays, we explore racial economic inequality, which has primarily been the result of long term investment in some communities, and a lack of investment in others. There have been exclusionary policies and strategies such as limited access to federal mortgage lending and redlining. A study by The Guardian in 2018 showed that minority owned businesses grew 400%. They found that 38% of black-owned businesses were female-owned, which is actually higher than the average of 23%, among all other small business owners. Yet the study showed that minority-owned businesses received lower loan amounts than non-minority businesses.
On this week's episode of Unplugged, Coach Colette speaks about racialized trauma. She discusses a theory developed by Resmaa Menakem, who is a therapist and trauma specialist based in Minneapolis, MN. It's called the HIPP Theory; and it stands for historical, intergenerational, persistent institutional, personal traumas. What Resmaa suggests is that it's often so coupled together, that we can't tell the difference. The only thing we notice is the overwhelm. Coach Colette shares some tips to help get some relief and release from our different traumas.
How have you been processing and dealing with your HIPP trauma? If you'd like to share your responses or thoughts, send us a message here. Did you know that each year marine plants produce more than a half of our atmosphere's oxygen? Or, that a mature tree can clean our air by absorbing 22 kilos of carbon dioxide, while releasing oxygen in exchange? On this Financial Fridays episode, we're taking time to focus on biodiversity, in recognition of World Environment Day. Biodiversity is the foundation that supports all of us on land and below the sea. It affects every aspect of our health and wellbeing.
This is a time to remember the importance of protecting our environment, and to recognize how interdependent we are. It's been estimated that, without changes in our consumption, within the next 10 years, one out of every four known species may be wiped off the planet. How can you help to make this world a safe habitat for all of us to live? Now more than ever, it is important to keep lines of communication open with your black and brown brothers and sisters. Learn to listen to other people’s voices.
The murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery, not to mention countless others that have been maimed or murdered, have been emotionally, physically, and mentally draining for people of color. In the Unplugged segment, Coach Colette turns our attention to these recent violent events, and introduces us to a condition called racial battle fatigue. This term was coined in 2003, by Professor William Smith, a professor of Ethnic Studies at the University of Utah. It describes the social and psychological stressors faced by African-Americans; specifically, black males on historically-white college campuses in the US. Chronic exposure to racial microaggressions and overt racism can be life-threatening, and lead to depression, anxiety, migraines, fatigue, and several other health issues.
Coach Colette suggests that you make yourself a priority, and do your inner work. If you need to talk to a therapist or coach, do that! Make time to move your body and eat nutritious foods. Create space for spiritual Zen moments or meditation. You might just save a life; and it might be your own. Take care of yourself by Starting Within.

Did you know that nearly 60% of people have experienced a major loss sometime in the past three years? In the last Financial Fridays episode for May, we're wrapping up our focus on Mental Health Awareness Month. Today, we're concentrating on how to find the positive after experiencing a loss. Whether it's related to COVID-19 and this pandemic, or in our regular lives, we all will experience loss at some point. It might be the end of a relationship. It might be the end of a job or a business. It might be the loss of a home, or the death of a loved one. Know that healing takes time. Nearly half of people who had a loss reported that it took up to six months for their strong feelings of grief to reduce. Today, you'll hear from Coach Colette some suggestions to help you navigate, manage, and process difficult emotions that may come up for you such as sadness, grief, or even anxiety.
In light of recent incidents in Central Park, New York and Minneapolis, Minnesota, Colette dedicates the Unplugged segment to sharing a special message of healing. Listen to hear more about her passion to accelerate collective healing in communities of color, and to help black and brown people to release the stress, anxiety and trauma that results from discrimination, micro-aggressions, racism, and ancestral wounds. Know you are special. You are unique. You are important. You matter, and we see you.

How have you been responding to stress lately? Has there been a change in your mood? Have you had difficulty adjusting to new guidelines as we continue to move towards "reopening?" Whether you've been reading every headline in the news, or have been taking the situation in stride, this pandemic likely has had an impact on your regular routine -- both physically and mentally.
In this episode of Coach Chat, Marina Simovic joins Coach Colette to talk to us about maintaining flexibility -- and, not just in the physical sense. Marina is a stretch therapist and Reiki master who engages her clients in a very personalized approach to achieve calmness and peace of mind. She also incorporates meditation and essential oils in her work with clients, and is a huge advocate of mindfulness. To learn more about her work, click here.
How much time do you spend sitting and staring at your computer screen? Remaining seated for long periods of time can cause pain and discomfort. Stretch therapy is a combination of physical therapy and Thai massage that incorporates traction and movement to effectively increase joint flexibility. Marina describes how to improve your health with deep, synchronized breathing and stretching techniques that help counter your sedentary habits. She recommends that you move your body every 45 minutes and drink water throughout the day. This helps to produce a clearer mind and reduce tension, which leaves you feeling relaxed, rejuvenated, and more limber.

Did you know that it's possible to be surrounded by people and still feel alone? In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, we're exploring more tools to help you thrive while managing your emotions. This week's Financial Fridays episode focuses on how you can improve your social connection with others.
It's been shown that the number of friendships you have in your adult life, especially early in your adult life, and how close those relationships are, will influence your wellbeing -- even up to 30 years later. What are you doing to create time for fun, play and socializing? Making time for those activities is important to support your mental health and wellbeing.
What other choices have you been making in this pandemic? In the Unplugged segment, Coach Colette talks about her A-HA! moment about making choices from a place of fear, or a survival mindset. She suggests that you consider your choices not from a place of self-judgment or guilt. Perhaps you'll have an A-HA! moment like she did, and learn more about your response to traumatic situations -- be it FIGHT, FLIGHT OR FREEZE.
Sukhtej asks you to consider how you might benefit from government financial support programs for businesses and individuals that were put in place in light of COVID-19. Developing a regular meditation practice can improve your mental and physical health in many ways, including increased positive mood and outlook, self-discipline, healthy sleep patterns, and even increased pain tolerance. To support you on your meditation journey -- particularly in these uncertain times -- we decided to create this special episode and to release it on World Meditation Day. Know that you can listen to this guided meditation at any time that you would like to settle down, start within, and get grounded.
If you experience challenges when you sit down to meditate, here are some steps to embrace a more mindful attitude: acknowledge any feelings that come up; observe any thoughts that come up; observe any sensations that arise in your body. Aim to not judge, nor to resist them. Instead, get into the practice of refocusing your attention back to your breath. Being curious can be a great way of counteracting resistance. If you say, "I'm curious about why I'm feeling ..." This is different than saying, "Why am I feeling ...?" or "I shouldn't be feeling ..." Curiosity or a beginner's mind can be very helpful for your meditation journey.
What insights or A-HA! moments did you have as a result of listening to this guided meditation? If you'd like to share your responses or thoughts, send us a message here.

We are continuing our focus on Mental Health during this Awareness Month of May. We love the theme of this Awareness Month, which is Tools 2 Thrive. One of the ways that you can thrive in your mental health and wellbeing is to own your feelings. It's been shown that people who can be more specific about identifying or labeling their emotions are less likely to self-injure, engage in potentially harmful self-coping habits, or to be physically aggressive with others. In this episode of Financial Fridays, Coach Colette shares tips and ideas to help you to recognize and own your feelings. Sukhtej also gives us another reminder of the benefits of starting an emergency fund -- even if it's only a small amount that you are able to put aside in the present time.
Have you noticed any unexpected positive outcomes that have resulted from your current situation? Are there things that you're doing now that could be beneficial for you to KEEP doing, (or STOP doing), after this pandemic has subsided? Perhaps you can be reminded of the analogy that "beautiful gifts can be wrapped in sandpaper." In today's Unplugged segment, Coach Colette discusses the benefits of re-framing your perspective, especially in challenging times. What lessons are you learning from life in the time of Corona? Can we have that faith that we will rise from the ashes? In the Unplugged segment, Coach Colette discusses the value of tapping into the full moon energy to release what's no longer serving you. Are you able to let your suppressed emotions bubble to the surface and find ways to release them? This also could be a great opportunity to heal any mother-child wounds that you might have.

What is your relationship with money? Really, think about that for a moment. Has your relationship shifted since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic? Maybe you're getting more up close and personal with your financial statements to keep track of how much money is flowing in and out. Or, perhaps, are you playing ostrich and burying your head in the proverbial sand, not even peeking at your accounts? Either way, you're sure to gain some useful advice and tactics from this Coach Chat episode.
You'll hear the conversation Coach Colette has with Jacquette Timmons, financial behaviorist and coach. She supports people to focus on their behaviors, motivations, choices, and overall psychology around money. You should know that the situation we're facing today is not Jacquette's first economic downturn. She recalls her experiences watching fellow financial professionals deal with the 1987 stock market crash and the 2008-2009 recession. Jacquette reminds us that there's no way to have predicted the full impact of this pandemic; so, she advises to not "should" all over yourself about past action (or inaction) regarding your finances. Instead, she recommends viewing this as an opportunity to re-frame or adjust your relationship with financial planning to focus less on the results, and more on the process of thinking through the different aspects -- such as your income, expenses, resources, goals, and time horizon.

This week was National Public Health Week. It's so significant to recognize this celebration now because of all of the nurses, doctors, EMTs, medical researchers, and midwives who are going above and beyond --- all of the public health workers who are putting their lives at risk so that we can stay healthier, and help to flatten the curve of COVID-19.
In New York City, at 7 pm at night, people have taken to clapping outside of their windows, on their porches, or on their fire escapes, to give a standing ovation to all of the public health workers, thanking them for putting their lives on the line so that so many more of us can stay healthy and well. Consider, how can you share some loving kindness from your heart? If someone in your family is an essential worker, or if you know of a friend who is a public health worker, how can you give them some encouragement or express your gratitude? We are all in this together, navigating this challenging situation.
Also in this episode, Coach Colette shares a personal anecdote about how she has been reacting to cancellations in her weekly schedule. She describes her A-HA moment about balancing aspects of predictability in all of this uncertainty. It's been suggested that social distancing to flatten the curve and slow the spread of COVID-19 also will have an impact on our mental wellbeing, that is through increased social isolation. Isolation and loneliness already are real health issues, considering that loneliness causes stress. Long-term or chronic stress leads to more frequent elevations of the hormone cortisol, and also is linked to higher levels of inflammation in the body. Ready to hear some good news about an innovative solution?
In this Coach Chat episode, Coach Colette has a conversation with Tamar Lucien, the founder and CEO of Mental Happy. This Y Combinator-backed company helps people to learn life skills for their emotional wellbeing. The startup was born out of Tamar's struggle to overcome her own anxiety. She soon began to realize that others also were struggling to cope after living through traumatic life events.
You'll hear how Tamar was really good at listening to customer feedback when making pivots from their first product, a curated wellness kit, to the current Mental Happy online community. The community now offers a full series of guided practices to help people focus on their healing process with a positive mindset and emotional state. You'll also learn how positive psychology can impact your daily life.

Congratulations on surviving the year that was March, and welcome to April! How you are doing? Did you know that today is Find a Rainbow Day? How can you seek out rainbows in your current situation? For example, what is something that is perhaps out of your reach today, because of all that's going on, that can still bring you joy in the moment? In this week's Financial Fridays episode, Coach Colette offers some inspiration to consider how you can shift your perspective to see things in a more colorful way, especially in this time of uncertainty. She also shares her personal experience of recently reviewing her 2020 intentions wheel to discover that she has many things to be grateful for, even as she continues to shelter in place for this extended period.

You may be aware that in March, the New York City Department of Education made the monumental decision to close New York City public schools to help curb the spread of COVID-19. Can you think of a better time than now for students to be enhancing their emotional resilience skills? And, if you think that social emotional learning is just for kids, you would be wrong!
Coach Colette and the Start Within Podcast team are excited to join the global movement to celebrate the importance of social emotional learning (SEL) on the first annual International SEL Day on March 27, 2020. This special, Friday episode of Coach Chat is a conversation with Daniel Trinidad, the Restorative Justice Coordinator at Urban Assembly Media High School.
You will hear from Daniel how implementing SEL has not only improved student wellbeing and academic outcomes, but also has enhanced the overall culture and environment in the school. You'll also hear how he has improved his own social and emotional wellbeing using the framework for himself.
The Urban Assembly was founded in 1997 under the mission of advancing students' economic and social mobility by improving public education. In partnership with the NYC Department of Education, the UA has created 23 small, career-themed middle and high schools throughout New York City. We hope that you are staying healthy and safe in these challenging times. Have you heard the acronym VUCA? It started as a military term, and it stands for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity. You'll learn more in this week's Financial Fridays episode.
As we continue our focus on Women's History Month, meet the next powerhouse woman, Zitkala Sa (which means Redbird in Lakota). This Yankton Dakota Sioux writer, editor, translator, musician, educator, and political activist has been noted as one of the most influential Native American activists of the 20th century. In 1913, Zitkala Sa wrote the libretto and songs for the Sundance Opera, the first Native American opera. During the 1920's, she promoted a pan-Indian movement to unite all of America's tribes in the cause of lobbying for citizenship rights. She continued to work for civil rights and better access to healthcare and education for Native Americans until her death in 1938.
In light of Suki's commentary on market volatility, Coach Colette was inspired to offer additional guidance to navigate and manage your emotions and feelings in this VUCA environment. She shares her personal journey this past week dealing with rapidly changing information and concerns about her wellbeing. She also provides suggestions to help ease your tension, calm your nerves, and get grounded.

Did you know that women of color have the highest rates of maternal deaths in the developed world? Even in New York City alone, the mortality rate is around 12 times higher for black women as it is for white women, and four times higher, on average, nationally. Black women also are 60% more likely to experience hypertensive disorders like pre-eclampsia, and are more likely to die from as a result.
These symptoms are exacerbated by an inescapable atmosphere of societal and systemic racism that can include the dismissal by physicians of their legitimate concerns and symptoms, the pre-conceived notions that black women are more likely to be single mothers, or the false belief that they are somehow better at dealing with pain.
In this episode of Let’s Talk LIVE, Coach Colette sits down with Nana Eyeson-Akiwowo from African Health Now, and Anthonia Akitunde of Mater Mea. The three dive deeper into the real challenges facing black women at the intersection of maternity, motherhood, and career. The guests also discuss their founder’s journeys, and how they make time in their hectic schedules for rest, relaxation and self-care.
African Health Now provides free postpartum "maternity go boxes" that include the necessary health and hygiene supplies to support mothers and their newborns during their first weeks. Mater Mea helps black moms live their best lives, featuring real motherhood stories and expert advice on everything from managing the work-life juggle, to finding a midwife, to handling microaggressions at work.

In this week's Financial Fridays, we continue our focus on Women's History Month, with an eye towards female pioneers in health and wellness. Sarah Loguen Fraser was an African-American female doctor, one of only 115 in the nation in the 1890's. In 1876, she became the first woman to gain an MD from Syracuse University College of Medicine, the second in New York, and the first to graduate from a co educational medical school. Frazier became the fourth African-American female doctor in the United States, and the first female doctor in the Dominican Republic.
What's really interesting is that her childhood home in Syracuse was an important stopping point on the Underground Railroad. Growing up in this house allowed Frazier to gain experience helping and treating illnesses that people had suffered as a result of their slavery or their escape. She was one of the first female doctors to specialize in obstetrics and pediatrics, and was a mentor to black midwives. Throughout her career. Loguen Frazier educated black midwives to integrate modern medical knowledge into their traditional routines.
In addition to providing insight into Frazier's medical career, Coach Colette also shares tips to help you get a good night's rest, in honor of this being Sleep Awareness Week. These are unsettling times -- and we want to support you as much as we can. In that light, Sukhtej offers some guidance for money management in light of market turbulence and COVID-19.

Did you know that the term "Woman Computer" was once a job title? Given that March is National Women's History Month, we have set the intention to share accomplishments of dynamic women pioneers across various industries. In this week's Financial Fridays episode, we're focusing on women in STEM and honoring Katherine Johnson.
You may know that on February 24, 2020, Katherine Johnson passed away at age 101. She was one of the first African-American graduates at West Virginia University. In 1953, she started working at NASA's precursor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. Johnson joined West Computing, which was a segregated unit of African-American women computers. For her computations on America's first human spaceflight project, Freedom 7, Johnson became the first African-American woman to have her name on a technical paper issued by NASA's Langley Research Center. In 2015, President Barack Obama awarded Johnson the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her many contributions to STEM and the country as a whole, despite segregation by racism and sexism.
In addition to Suki's tip to ride the wave of market volatility, you'll also hear Coach Colette share a tribute and a personal anecdote about James Lipton. Lipton passed away on March 2, 2020. He was a writer, lyricist, actor, and dean emeritus of the Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University in New York City.

Do your actions align with your values? In a busy life it is often hard to keep on top of our consumption and old habits and when it comes to being environmentally conscious or sustainable, it is difficult to know where to start. New York State has recently implemented its plastic bag ban, aiming to reduce the 23 billion plastic bags used state-wide every year and highlighting the shift away from a disposable mindset.
In this episode of Coach Chat, Amer Jandali joins Coach Colette in an impromptu recording session at the Centre for Social Innovation to discuss all the important decisions and ‘micro-moves’ that lead his entrepreneurial journey to where it is today. Amer is the founder of Future Meets Present, an environmental project that helps design products and systems to help reduce consumption and waste. He is also the designer and founder of the Braceletote; a remarkably ingenious way of never forgetting your shopping bags!
You’ll hear how he pivoted from a life of late nights as a DJ in New Mexico, to his degree in Design for Social Innovation and on to his work at CSI. He sheds light on the shift he felt after watching a documentary on plastic waste and the important roles that we can all have as individuals in the environmental and sustainability social movement.
The two also discuss the challenges facing solopreneurs in New York City and ways to combat the need for external and internal validation and the importance of regular introspection. Amer shares what motivates him to work harder, remain grounded and what helps him stay in flow.
If you want to learn more about Amer’s work you can find it on his website, or if you have a social innovation you wish to build, why not try a day at CSI for free!

We often approach life from a scarcity mindset, feeling like we don't have enough time. What would you do if you had an extra day off? Maybe you could go on an exciting adventure? Or perhaps take the day off for some special self-care rituals?
Well, tomorrow is Leap Day! The day that comes along every four years where we add an extra 24 hours to our calendar and keep our clocks aligned with the Earth's position in the solar system. It's also a good point to stop and think about the kinds of things you would do if you had more time. Or, maybe you're one of the lucky 5 million people who will celebrate their birthday tomorrow!
In this episode of Financial Fridays, Coach Colette gives us some Leap Day facts and Suki is back with a tip about volatile markets.

What stories do you find inspiring? Maybe they are those of pioneers, unsung heroes or people overcoming great adversity?
In this episode, Coach Colette dives into the history of Dr. Myra Adele Logan, an incredible black female physician and surgeon who was the first woman to perform open heart surgery! During the 1960s, she also researched the early detection and treatment of breast cancer. She developed X-ray processes that allowed tumors to be discovered earlier.
While Black History Month is a month to celebrate the countless contributions African Americans have made, it's important to remember these stories in our daily lives. There is still so much we can learn from sharing the accomplishments of our heroes and she-roes.

How do you respond to a challenge or negative feedback? Are you resilient, and able to pivot? Or do you tend to pack it in and move on to something else? In this episode of Coach Chat, Coach Colette talks with Suzanne Sinatra, the Founder and CEO of Private Packs. Private Packs is a discreet, wearable, and sustainable product that helps women to soothe vulva pain and ease genital discomfort. You'll learn how she dealt with rejection, and combated taboos about women's sexual health -- all while creating a product that empowers women.
The two discuss how Suzanne previously juggled a nine-to-five day job, while at the same time developed an innovative personal wellness product to promote women's comfort and intimate healing. Suzanne shares all of the pivots and iterations of going from an idea, to an MVP, to bringing on a product designer, all the way up to her first crowdfunding campaign.
And, if you can imagine, you'll hear how Suzanne did all of this while fighting and, eventually, beating stage 3 breast cancer! She offers her "lessons learned" about the importance of listening to your body, and letting things "marinate" to gain clarity, when navigating the busy solopreneur journey.

Have you taken time this month to reflect, look back, and then dream about the future? For millennia, we’ve been using January as a time to reflect on the year just passed and look into what the future holds for us. Ancient Greek mythology saw Janus (January) as a God who watched over gates, doorways, periods of transition and passages of time.
As we enter the lunar new year, and say goodbye to January, how are you feeling about your intentions for 2020? Sometimes, these purposeful journeys we are on can be challenging and it is important to understand how we feel and what we do when these challenges come along. How do you sit in the energy of uncertainty? Have you given yourself the space to think and dream and reflect? In this week’s Financial Fridays, Coach Colette reflects on a month of transition and the difficulties of starting a new year. Also, Suhky wants to know when was the last time you met with your financial adviser?

Laughter stimulates the heart and other organs, relaxes your muscles, helps regulate your blood pressure and circulation and increases endorphins to make us feel great! We can even use laughter to help get out our frustrations and release any negative feelings we may be experiencing. Laughter is also infectious, so why not use laughter to help others improve their own health and wellbeing!

What does it mean to be an authentic leader? What does it mean to bring your "full self" to work -- particularly for people of color or other marginalized groups? These are just two of the questions discussed in this episode of Coach Chat on Authentic Leadership. Coach Colette chats with Surabhi Lal, the Chief Impact Officer at Luminary; which is a collaboration hub in NYC that is focused on supporting women and women-identified who are passionate about professional development and expanding their networks. She's also an Assistant Adjunct Professor at New York University's Wagner Graduate School for Public Service. They talk about ways that leaders can build community and increase interaction among people of different backgrounds, to create more inclusive work environments. And, for those who might be seeking a new job or other career opportunity, they share suggestions to evaluate a prospective professional environment, through the lens of "culture-add" instead of "culture-fit."

Did you know that black women experience depression at a 50% higher rate than white women? One contributing factor is that black women are too often living in a state of hyperarousal bracing themselves for the next microaggression, then shifting into hypoarousal when they become too tired to fight back; which, over time, can lead to depression. Yet, black women are less likely to seek out support for their mental health and wellbeing. In this Coach Chat episode, Coach Colette chats with Jennifer Sterling, founder of The Bodyful Healing Project, an initiative that offers support and resources to black women living with depression. She also is a Registered Dance & Movement Psychotherapist. They talk all about how oppression can affect your body and your mental health, particularly for black women who are living in a constant state of deciding when it's safe to show up as their authentic selves, and when it's necessary to "code switch." Jennifer shares tips to more healthfully release the stress and anxiety that can accumulate from microaggressions and other systemic barriers.
