Hey today we've got a super great guest on our show Yatish Patel with Sycamore Investments and we're going to let Yatish come on and tell us a little bit more about what's going on over there and uh how those guys are faring during the Covid crisis welcome aboard how are you doing this morning? - Very very well thank you. How are you Ted, I appreciate you having me on. Hey no worries I appreciate you giving us the time. So tell us a little bit about you and Sycamore Investments and kind of how you guys got in the hotel business. Yeah, so I actually I was born in Africa and I actually moved to Greenville in late 78 and when we moved here we started in the hotel business. Right away my dad found a property in downtown Greenville and that's how. I was six, seven years old and running the front desk, cleaning rooms and I've been doing that ever since. Pretty much that the way I feel either my house or another hotel right but it's that's kind of how this was really how we started and it was for years and years. It was just a mom-and-pop business between me and my dad and it's more after we after I graduated college that I really got into the franchise-building hotels and um I was 23 and I signed the first deal with the Hampton Inn and so that's really how Sycamore didn't start till about 10 11 years ago.

Hi Holly welcome to the show! - Hey Ted thanks for having me. Awesome, hey, tell us a little bit about you first before we get into that and tell us a little bit about your background and how you decided you wanted to be an attorney. So my name's Holly Hempel, I'm an Attorney here at Nelson Mullins in Atlanta Georgia. I have been practicing for about 20 years. I graduated in 1999 from Wake Forest and I moved to Atlanta. I was sort of drawn to Atlanta after the Olympics and moved here and have had a great career almost exclusively at Nelson Mullins. I practice all on the litigation defense side and I have defended a lot of hotels over the years. I've always been really interested in premises liability and believe it or not i was a police officer before I went to law school and so I had some firsthand experience with you know some of the criminal issues that come up at hotels and I was also a waitress for many years at resorts and hotels. #TedKelly #TedsHospitalityMinute #HollyHempel

Hey we've got a great guest on the day Kevin Filer with Davidson's Hotel and Resort, senior vice president design and construction. Hey Kevin, welcome aboard! How are you doing? - I'm doing great, thanks for inviting me Ted. - Oh awesome man, glad to have you. So hey, tell us a little bit about how things are going over at Davidson. I know a lot of folks are probably going through a little bit of a tough time right now with this Covid 19 crisis, but how are you guys doing? - Yeah, we're doing great. I don't know if you know much about Davidson hotels and resorts but we manage iconic assets in great locations. We have 52 hotels right now and we're continuing to grow. Most of our drive-to destinations are starting to show signs of recovery and most of our projects have continued to go. We were very fortunate, we had a number of projects that have started right before the downturn and the ownership groups that we work with were able to secure liquidity and there are pretty good balance sheets and we're able to keep the funding going for these projects. So again we're probably in a better situation than a lot of our competitors. The goal really is to come out on the other side of this thing in a better competitive position to our competition. -Yeah, hey that's awesome because I would say you're probably unique and that you were able to keep projects going during the crisis because a lot of the projects that were in play, I think we're placed on hold or you know the ownership group decided, hey. you know we may want to do something else with that capital given a situation.

I am doing well man just trying to stay safe and survive this Covid 19. What a world were in. Listen, it's been a lifelong dream of mine to do a TED talk and now in the course of a few weeks I've been able to do it twice so this is just a dream come true Ted, really thank you. I think you're famous now in my house. But how are things out West? Yeah, it's amazing how in the course of a few weeks everything has changed in a drastic way. Clearly in the sense of business for us it's improved and there's no other way of putting it. We've picked up new projects, we've had many hotel owners that have come to us really kind of in that state of realizing that it's the perfect time to complete that renovation on their hotel. We've actually had a few that have quite literally said those words and figured out how to get funded. Wow, understood, that it's a necessity for them to set up their property, to improve their property. First, tell us a little bit about HFS and what you do there and what your activity has been and what your role is. - So again, first of all, thank you for having me. I really appreciate it. HFS stands for Hospitality Focused Solutions and in the name of the original business was Concepts 4. They merged but we're the originator of the turnkey interior design firm. So we offer all of the elements needed to complete a hotel project architecture interior design procurement.
Hi this is Ted Kelly with Ted's Hospitality Minute. Today we've got a special guest and Andy Cajka with Southern Hospitality Group and he welcome to the show. Tell us a little bit about you and SHG. Ted thank you very much for this invite great to see you. Wish it was in person but this seems to be pretty consistent these days. We do appreciate this opportunity again name of my company is Southern Hospitality Group and it was formed in 1998 for the purpose of developing and managing mainly franchised hotels. We started our first franchise with Hilton Corporation and then we moved in to do some Marriott properties and approved for Hyatt properties and then also involved with some independent development and management myself. I started in this business at an early age 13, washing dishes grew up in Cleveland Ohio and went to went to school to maybe get out of the restaurant business and thought I'd go into manufacturing or in a management and that was coming out at the time of our first my first experience of a downturn of the recession of back in 82 and so I got had an opportunity to go into the hotel business with a local Holiday Inn as a assistant food and beverage director. So that was the beginning of the of the hotel and hospitality career and then was very very fortunate to join Hyatt Hotels and have a corporate career with them and travel with various Hyatt operations twice here in Greenville South Carolina and also did a corporate stick with Hyatt corporate director rooms which is where I was able to open 14 Hyatts and experience that side of the business.
