Credo High School science teacher Dr. Julian Shaw, an educator regarded for opening doors to new learning opportunities for students, has been named the Sonoma County Teacher of the Month for February 2025.
Shaw has taught at the school since it opened in 2011 and has developed several programs for his students, including offerings that focus on metalworking, woodworking, and electric vehicles. In 2019, he helped found the school’s robotics team, and he recently secured over $1 million in grant funding to develop career technical education pathways, Credo High Executive Director Andrea Akmenkalns said.
“So much of what is new and exciting here is because of Dr. Shaw,” Akmenkalns said. “He’s been innovating courses ever since he got here.”
The Sonoma County Teacher of the Month program highlights extraordinary educators in the region’s public schools. It is organized and promoted by the Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE) in partnership with local radio stations who solicit nominations for the program via on-air ads.
Shaw learned of the recognition during a surprise classroom visit held Thursday, Feb. 27, at Credo High in Rohnert Park. The visit was attended by Akmenkalns and Shaw’s students, including members of the robotics team who nominated Shaw for the award.
“Dr. Shaw is someone who pushes you to try harder, all with a bit of fun,” one nomination said. “His knowledge, passion, and British humor have made him a prominent figure in our school and a person whom we all respect.”
Multiple nominations touched on Shaw’s unwavering dedication to the school’s robotics team, for which he spends afternoons and parts of his weekend to mentor. Shaw’s willingness to go above and beyond to support his students exemplifies the spirit of the Teacher of the Month recognition program, said Sonoma County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Amie Carter.
“Dr. Shaw’s ability to create meaningful learning experiences for students has transformed the educational landscape at Credo High,” Carter said. “We are incredibly fortunate to have such a passionate and innovative educator in Sonoma County.”
As the winner of the Teacher of the Month contest, Shaw received a $500 classroom gift card sponsored by Community First Credit Union, a six-month family membership from the Sonoma County Family YMCA in Santa Rosa, and $100 gift cards from Henry Mechanical and Bernstein Orthodontics.

Kasia Munski, an algebra and leadership teacher at Rancho Cotate High School praised for her deep involvement on the campus, has been named the Sonoma County Teacher of the Month for December 2024.

Munski, who started working at Rancho Cotate in 2016, learned of the recognition during a school assembly held Friday, Dec. 20. Her boyfriend, roommate, sister, and niece, as well as Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District Superintendent Maité Iturri, joined in on the celebration.

The Sonoma County Teacher of the Month program highlights extraordinary educators in the region’s public schools. It is organized and promoted by the Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE) in partnership with local radio stations.

During the assembly, Rancho Cotate Principal Heather Ramme spoke about several roles Munski plays on the campus in addition to that of educator. Munski is the school’s swim coach, math department chair, and the advisor for the school’s junior class council, which is a group of students who plan events such as the homecoming dance and prom.

“I love giving back, this is my community,” Munski said after the announcement. “The students are great and the staff that I work with is amazing. I love everything I do and I’m excited to have won.”

Munski was selected as the December 2024 Sonoma County Teacher of the Month after she received several nominations from Rancho Cotate students. Nominations for the program are solicited via on-air advertisements played by Amaturo Sonoma Media Group’s Froggy 92.9.

“One student described Munski as “one of the best teachers I’ve ever had,” and said she helped them grow on a personal level. Several nominations touched on Munski’s positive attitude and helpful nature.

“Ms. Munski is such an amazing teacher and has impacted our campus in a positive way,” another student said. “She has the most welcoming personality, and she truly cares about her students.”

Sonoma County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Amie Carter congratulated Munski for receiving the Teacher of the Month recognition and thanked her for all the contributions she has made to the Rancho Cotate campus.

“Educators in Sonoma County are responsible for taking care of our most valuable asset as a community: our youth,” Carter said. “It is heartening to see the extra mile that Ms. Munski goes to support her students, whose admiration of her is so clearly reflected in the nominations she received.”

As the winner of the Teacher of the Month contest, Munski was awarded with a $500 classroom gift card sponsored by Community First Credit Union, a six-month family membership from the Sonoma County Family YMCA in Santa Rosa, and $100 gift cards from Henry Mechanical and Bernstein Orthodontics.

Ethan Cosgrove, a dual 7th grade math and 8th grade history teacher at Spring Lake Middle School in the Rincon Valley Union School District, was named the Sonoma County Teacher of the Month for May 2023.

He was awarded the recognition during a surprise classroom visit at the east Santa Rosa middle school campus Wednesday, May 10. The event was attended by students in Cosgrove’s 8th grade history class, Spring Lake Middle Principal Hannah Bates and other Spring Lake employees, as well as Rincon Valley Union Superintendent Dr. Tracy Smith and members of her district team.

The Sonoma County Office of Education partners with Hot 101.7, and Froggy 92.9 — where nominations are solicited via on-air ads — as well as Community First Credit Union, to deliver the Teacher of the Month program. The recognition highlights exceptional educators in Sonoma County.

Principal Bates underscored the leadership Cosgrove has taken to bring meaningful school initiatives to the campus during Wednesday’s event.

They include a forum that brought candidates for Santa Rosa City Council’s second district to the middle school in October.

During the 2021-2022 school year, Cosgrove organized a letter-writing campaign in which students wrote to Sen. Mike McGuire about Sonoma County’s homeless crisis, Bates said.

He additionally spearheaded a supply drive and fundraiser for The Living Room, a nonprofit that serves women and children who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, as well as Social Advocates For Youth, an organization that provides services to Sonoma County’s at-risk youth and their families.

“He is just a crucial member of every single team that we have here and is always interested in bringing real world experiences to our kids,” Principal Bates said of Cosgrove after the classroom visit. “You can see the students in his classes are just thriving because of the work that he does.”

Principal Bates’ sentiments mirrored comments submitted about Cosgrove to the Sonoma County Teacher of the Month contest.

“Ethan has taken on leadership roles in the district, which have allowed him to help make changes in how teachers collaborate to best meet the needs of all the students in the school, instead of just in his classes,” one nomination said. “He is kind, thoughtful, and is always taking on more than expected.”

Dr. Amie Carter, Sonoma County superintendent of schools, congratulated Cosgrove for receiving the Teacher of the Month recognition, applauding his proactiveness on the Spring Lake Middle School campus.

“The work that Mr. Cosgrove has done to foster student involvement in their own community and local government is truly commendable,” Carter said. “When Sonoma County students know that they can enact meaningful, positive change in the world around them, we are all better for it.”

Cosgrove was awarded a plaque, flowers, balloons, and a $500 classroom supply gift card from Community First Credit Union during Wednesday’s event.

He is the final recipient of the Sonoma County Teacher of the Month program for the 2022-23 school year.

Sacha Campbell, who teaches transitional kindergarten and kindergarten-aged students at Horicon Elementary in Annapolis, was selected as the Sonoma County Teacher of the Month for March 2023.

She was presented with the award on Wednesday, March 8, during a surprise assembly attended by the school’s students, staff, and Superintendent-Principal Jeff McFarland.

Campbell has been an active member of the Horicon Elementary school community for the past 13 years – as a parent, substitute teacher, and classified aide, among other roles– though she only recently joined the school’s staff as a teacher, McFarland said.

“In just three short years on staff, Sacha has become a shining example of how to nurture young minds, build rapport with families, and aspire for greatness,” McFarland said.

Campbell was selected as the Teacher of the Month after receiving nominations for the program, which recognizes educators from throughout Sonoma County who go above and beyond for their students. The Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE) partners with Hot 101.7, and Froggy 92.9 — where nominations are solicited via on-air ads — as well as Community First Credit Union, to deliver this program.

The nominations for Campbell highlighted her ability to engage the school’s youngest learners in meaningful learning. One person who nominated Campbell complimented her for the environment she’s cultivated in her classroom, where students can be their “silly self, have fun, (and) ask questions.”

“The care Mrs. Campbell takes in educating her students will undoubtedly have long-lasting, positive impacts on the lives of these young children,” said Dr. Amie Carter, Sonoma County Superintendent of Schools. “I commend Mrs. Campbell for the dedication she’s shown to her students at Horicon Elementary School.”

Campbell was awarded a plaque, flowers and balloons, and a $500 classroom supply gift card from Community First Credit Union during the assembly on Wednesday.

Do you know a teacher who goes above and beyond for their students? Nominations for the Sonoma County Teacher of the Month can be submitted via www.sonomacountyteacher.com, or via via Froggy 92.9 or Hot 101.7

Abby Mooney, a kindergarten teacher at Sebastopol’s Park Side Elementary School, has been named Sonoma County Teacher of the Month for January 2023. She was surprised by the recognition Tuesday, Feb. 7, as families who nominated her for the award were dropping off students at school. Joining family members at the gathering were fellow teachers, classified staff, and the school’s principal and superintendent, Linda Irving.

Mooney was selected as the Teacher of the Month after receiving several nominations for the program, which recognizes educators from throughout Sonoma County who go above and beyond for their students. The Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE) partners with Hot 101.7, and Froggy 92.9 — where nominations are solicited via on-air ads — as well as Community First Credit Union, to deliver this program.

“Mrs. Mooney’s commitment to her kindergarten students and the degree to which she is loved by school families shone through in their passionate nominations,” said Dr. Amie Carter, Sonoma County Superintendent of Schools. “We’re proud to have the Teacher of the Month program to thank educators like her for their lasting impact on our youth.”

Mooney began her teaching career in 2006 and joined Park Side, in the Sebastopol Union School District, during the 2020-21 school year. Her previous experience included teaching in the west African country of Ghana and in San Francisco. The parents who nominated her for the award were universal in their praise for her ability to make every student feel special.

“Mrs. Mooney goes out of her way to help our kids feel welcome at school,” one parent wrote. “She embraces children of all families and brings us together to make something special.”

“She goes over and above expectations to make kindergarten feel like a special and safe place,” another parent said. “When volunteering in her classroom it makes me want to go back to kindergarten and relearn the social-emotional lessons that she weaves expertly into her curriculum all day long.”

Mooney was awarded a plaque, flowers and balloons, and a $500 classroom supply gift card from Community First Credit Union. During Tuesday’s recognition, her superintendent and principal, Irving, read from Mooney’s cover letter from when she first applied to work at the school, highlighting how the teacher had lived up to her stated commitment to education.

“She’s innovative, creative, and cares for students so much,” Irving said.

Tina Brown, a special day class teacher at Windsor’s Brooks Elementary School, has been named Sonoma County Teacher of the Month for December 2022. She was informed of the recognition Thursday, Jan. 12, during a staff meeting at the school’s library. The gathering was attended by fellow teachers, classified staff, and the school’s principal, Annette Zucconi.

Brown was selected as the Teacher of the Month after receiving several nominations for the program, which recognizes educators from throughout Sonoma County who go above and beyond for their students. The Sonoma County Office of Education (SCOE) partners with Hot 101.7, and Froggy 92.9 — where nominations are solicited via on-air ads — as well as Community First Credit Union, to deliver this program.

“I am thrilled our organization celebrates the incredible skills and dedication that our public school teachers have to offer to the students of Sonoma County,” said Dr. Amie Carter, Sonoma County superintendent of schools. “The Teacher of the Month program is our way of thanking those educators who have exceeded expectations and made a lasting impact on our youth.”

The patience and dedication Brown has cultivated during her 23 years in education was a common theme among the nominations submitted for her.

“She loves what she does as a teacher and most importantly (she loves) her students,” one nomination said. “She spends extra hours if needed … and dedicates her time to them.”

Zucconi, the Brooks Elementary School principal, said Brown joined their campus this year as an experienced special education teacher “with a set of skills that even we were surprised by.”

Zucconi pointed to one of Brown’s students, who last year was placed in more than four different classroom settings after facing multiple challenges in accessing his education, as an example of the positive impact Brown is having on the lives of students.

“He is successful, he is responding positively to adults, he is taking accountability and he is learning,” Zucconi said of the student. “And that is the magic of Tina.”

Brown was awarded a plaque and a $500 classroom supply gift card from Community First Credit Union during Thursday’s classroom visit. She expressed appreciation for being selected to receive the recognition.

“I’m just so honored to have this award,” Brown said. “Thank you.”
