A way people are told to motivate themselves and create habits is to identify themselves with the habit they're trying to create. In other words, if you want to become more fit, you should consider yourself a "person who goes to the gym", personality attribution, rather than a behavior attribution, such as " I'm going to the gym." While this has solid research to support it, it can also be taken too far. And then there are people who don't buy into it.

Pessimism has a bad rap. In the health and fitness sphere, people are expected to be positive, to be motivated. If you're trying to take care of yourself, it's only natural, right? Well... What if you don't want to? What if the chips are down, but you still want to improve your health? In my experience, pessimism and health don't necessarily have to be mutually exclusive. In fact, pessimism might be a better option at times. And in fact, many people may have the wrong impression of pessimism.
