Headlines connecting a popular plant-based sweetener to cardiovascular issues have people panicking. A new study reported that elevated blood levels of erythritol, a plant-based zero-calorie sugar substitute, are linked to an increased risk of major cardiovascular events like heart attack and stroke. There were a number of limitations to the study, and also nuances to understand about our body’s natural production of erythritol, which I outline in this week’s episode of FUELED. Tune in to learn what you need to know about erythritol and why I still feel comfortable using it as a replacement for sugar.

Creatine has long been thought of as a weight gain supplement for body builders and football players. But a plethora of research shows that it can also reduce muscle loss as we age, boost brain health and promote muscle recovery, among other benefits. It can be a fit for older people, women and even endurance sports athletes. Its side effects are minimal; what we used to think was cautionary (cramping, kidney effects) has since been shown to be less of an issue, or in many cases, a non-issue. Sports dietitian and nutrition consultant Tavis Piattoly, MS, RD, LDN, joins us to explain more.

We spend an average of four hours on our phones each day, with most of us checking them 90-120 times, and for some, it’s 250+ pickups in a single day! Studies show that patients who cultivate a positive attitude are far more likely to live longer than those who don’t. And more than just extra years, a positive attitude helps us have a higher quality of life during that time we do have. Positive thinking may begin by looking on "the bright side" in the midst of difficulty, but it doesn’t have to end there. Critical Care and Pulmonology specialist Jonathan Richards, MD, joins me to share how positivity in medicine can make us healthier and happier -- and what we can do to cultivate it in our own lives.

The aim of food marketing is twofold: Companies want to meet the minimum standards that govern their packaging and its contents and – perhaps more importantly to them – want consumers to pick up and buy their products. From a white rice claiming to be high protein to a seasoning promising a salt-free Bloody Mary, I share some “wolf in sheep’s clothing” items I’ve spotted recently and why it’s so important to read (and re-read) the small print.

New Year's resolutions often start out as lofty ambitions, yet can leave us feeling defeated and discouraged. But they don't have to. Rather than setting and attempting to achieve unrealistic resolutions, why not consider taking an informal audit of your eating patterns and tweaking a few? I share more about this sustainable approach on this week’s episode of FUELED.

Dan’s 3 Qs to assess goals + priorities:
1. You have all the money you need, now and in the future. What will you do with it? From this moment forward, how will you live your life?

  1. You’ve just come back from a visit to a doctor who has discovered from you lab results that you have only five to ten years to live. You don’t have “limitless” money like question one, but you will feel healthy until you go. Knowing death is waiting for you sooner than you expected, how will you change your life? And what will you do in the time you have remaining?

  2. This time you visit your doctor and learn you only have twenty-four hours to live. Ask yourself, “what feelings am I experiencing? What regrets, longings or deep and now unfulfilled dreams? What do I wish I had completed, been, had, done in this life that is just about to end?”

People are often surprised that, as a registered dietitian, I incorporate bread as a regular part of my lifestyle. Some are delighted while others are, well, let’s just say… a bit judgmental. After all, bread tends to get a really bad rap. But, there’s little need for such bread angst; bread – in some shape or fashion – can practically fit into any diet. That said, there is a tremendous amount of variation among breads in terms of quality and ingredients. It’s not as simple as comparing one loaf to another. This week on FUELED, I share a rundown of the most popular types of bread and which diets they are best suited for.

Cow’s milk has ample competition these days, surrounded by an ever-growing array of “milks” made from almonds, cashews, peas, oats, hemp and other ingredients. Choosing a plant-based milk alternative may make us feel like we’re doing something good for our body, but are they really any better for us? The answer is complicated and one I’m delving into this week on FUELED. From nutritional stats to ingredient lists, I give a rundown on what you need to know about the most common types of both cow’s milk and plant-based milks on store shelves – and how to choose the right one for you.

Microplastics are everywhere - extending far beyond our plastic water bottles, straws and ziplocs. They’re in our clothes, our water, our bodies - and even our children’s bodies. Not good, since plastics are linked to cancer, infertility, global warming and more.
Dr. Sherri Mason, professor of chemistry and leading researcher in plastic pollution, shares her insight and strategies for effortlessly reducing our reliance on plastics, one small step at a time. I love her approach for many reasons, including the fact that she’s not an alarmist. In her words, she’s not anti-plastic, simply ‘anti-stupid-plastic’.

This week, I'm joined by Maria Sylvester Terry, social strategy manager and registered dietitian for Ochsner Eat Fit, to cover the positives – and the pitfalls – of social media when it comes to our mind, body and spirit. We explore the culture of self-improvement, and she shares insights and strategies for filtering your feed for self-protection and self-preservation. We also uncover how to spot non-experts claiming expertise on social media, why they can be so toxic and how to find the right nutrition and wellness expert for you.

Working 24/7, your brain is always “on,” controlling everything you do, from your breathing and heartbeat to your movements and thoughts, even when you’re sleeping. This week, I share the latest research in nutritional psychiatry, including how and why food directly impacts our mood and our mental health, plus dos and don’ts on mood-boosting foods to include in your diet.
