17:14 -AI in Retail: Practical Tools, Not Magic Solutions

23:30 -Supply Chain Myths, Tariff Policy & Organized Retail Crime

In this special interview edition of Global Trade This Week, Doug Draper is joined by Jonathan Gold, Vice President of Supply Chain and Customs Policy at the National Retail Federation. Gold represents the retail industry on supply chain, international trade, product safety, customs, and transportation policy issues, and has been a leading voice on the value of trade and global supply chains to the U.S. economy.

The conversation begins with a look at the scope of the NRF, the world’s largest retail trade association, and the wide range of businesses it supports, from small independent stores to major national retailers, restaurants, digital brands, and more. Gold explains how NRF helps retailers navigate shared challenges including tariffs, cyber risk, labor, asset protection, cargo theft, and retail crime.

A major theme throughout the interview is the reality that disruption has become part of the operating environment. Gold notes that retailers are no longer planning around a return to “normal” as it existed before 2019. Instead, they are building supply chains for a world defined by uncertainty, shifting tariff policy, changing consumer behavior, earlier peak seasons, and the need to stay prepared for whatever comes next.

Doug and Jonathan also discuss the growing role of artificial intelligence in retail operations. Rather than treating AI as a universal solution, Gold emphasizes a more practical approach: identify the problem first, then determine where AI can help. From supply chain auditing to loss prevention and workforce productivity, retailers are looking for targeted ways to use technology while still keeping human judgment in the loop.

The episode also explores organized retail crime, cargo theft, and the importance of collaboration between retailers, law enforcement, solution providers, and policymakers. Gold highlights the Combating Organized Retail Crime Act as one of the key policy efforts currently moving through Washington, with the potential to strengthen coordination across federal agencies and support state and local enforcement efforts.

Finally, Gold offers a clear reminder about one of the biggest myths in supply chain: products do not simply appear on shelves. Retail supply chains are complex, global, and often planned six to nine months in advance. Policy changes, sourcing shifts, logistics capacity, port infrastructure, compliance requirements, and consumer demand all play a role in what ultimately reaches the customer.

Watch the full interview for a thoughtful look at the intersection of retail, trade policy, supply chain resilience, and the decisions shaping the future of global commerce.

In this episode of Global Trade This Week, hosts Pete Mento and Doug Draper discuss the impact of tariffs on the footwear industry with Matt Priest, CEO of the Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America (FDRA). Priest highlights the industry's reliance on imports, noting that 97% of footwear comes from Asia, with China, Vietnam, and Indonesia being major suppliers. The discussion covers the U.S. government's tariff policies, which have increased costs significantly, leading to a $6.22 billion duty bill last year. Priest also discusses FDRA's advocacy efforts, including lobbying, data services, and media outreach, and emphasizes the industry's need for stable trade policies.

Today on Uptime Logistics, Doug Draper of ACME Distribution and the Denver Transportation Club explores the concept of reshoring America’s manufacturing with Harry Moser, founder of the Reshoring Initiative. Created in 2010 as a non-profit, the Reshoring Initiative’s goal is to balance the trade deficit of goods that America has with its trading partners.

Harry begins by outlining how the U.S. had a trade deficit of $1.1 Trillion in 2021 . Balancing this would see US manufacturing increase by 40% along with 5 or 6 million new manufacturing jobs. Raising awareness, advocating for policies, and providing pathways to achieve this balanced outcome makes up the work of the Reshoring Initiative.

Doug asks more detailed questions about why all of this is important. Harry shares some of Ray Dalio’s ideas, along with his own, about the importance of strengthening the US economy and the greater level of confidence created along with that.

They discuss many factors ranging from environmtanl concerns to logistics costs and other considerations. Harry then dives into the methodologies to enables more reshoring, including their calculations of Total Cost of Ownership. Just by doing the math correctly, about 30% more manufacturing could be easily and economically advantageous to produce in the United States instead of abroad.

Today’s episode outlines the positive trends we have been seeing over the last 10 years in making progress on reshoring and the positive signals as we look forward to the next 5 and 10 years. Overall, Doug and Harry highlight the importance of reshoring through exploring the reasons why and the methods to achieve this goal.

Today on Uptime Logistics, Doug Draper of ACME Distribution and the Denver Transportation Club dives into the world of renewable energy development - specifically business-driven and community solar projects. To help explore this topic, Doug is joined by expert guest Jonathan Rogers. Jonathan is the Renewable Energy Specialist working with Denver’s Office of Climate Action, Sustainability, and Resiliency.

They discuss the role of cities as major centers of energy consumption - and therefore cities as major contributors to energy related emissions. This highlights the important opportunity cities have to partner with stakeholders such as businesses and nonprofits. Together, they can collaboratively lead the way with policies, incentives, programs, and education designed to improve sustainable energy production and access. Denver is a leading advocate and example to look to as more cities are looking to transition to the future of reliable, affordable, and carbon-free energy systems.

The conversation ranges from the types of solar power generation, battery storage technology, and the electification of buildings and transportation systems. For companies like CAP Logistics, on-site solar is a great option for commercial buidlings with the available roof space to install solar panels. Another exciting project Jonathan shares invloves a city partnership with Denver Botanic Gardens Chatfield Farm building a four-acre site that produces 1.2 megawatts of solar energy - enough for over 250 homes in need above and beyond the entire electrical needs of the farm itself. Studies show the solar panels actually help control temperature and water evaporation on a functional farm where the food grown will be donated and distributed to local food pantries. The program also provides job training programs (including Veteran outreach) and general education to its 190,000 annual visitors to the site.

Jonathan and his colleagues have been a helpful resource in guiding CAP Logistics through the process of doing research on options and best practices to install solar power. He and the rest of the the city, state, and utility (Xcel in Colorado) have all been very helpful in guiding CAP’s investments in sustainable energy production. They’ve also helped with guidance for how to give the excess electrical capacity to neighbors in need. Learn more about that program at Energy Outreach Colorado.

CAP Logistics believes it’s good business to be a good neighbor. We also encourage others to listen to this episode and visit Denver’s websites to learn and follow best practices in order to make the most impact for our local communities - and our world.

A big thanks to Jonathan for sharing his time and expertise with our audience. His passion and knowledge are readily apparent, and we’re grateful to have met him and have him serving our city. An ounce of education goes a long way, and we’re excited to help share the word!

Today, Doug Draper gets to talk with George Sparks, President and CEO of the Denver Museum of Nature and Science (DMNS). Tune in or read on to learn more about George, the Museum, and how profits & purpose can inspire better business.

Doug and George start off the discussion with a bit of background from George’s time as a pilot in the Air Force, continuing on to further study aerospace engineering, and teaching at the Air Force Academy. After the Air Force, George worked at HP during a time where computers were really growing and taking off. Holding to a promise he’d made to himself and a mentor, he eventually retired from HP to find the perfect role for giving back to the community through his work with the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

The museum was founded in 1900 with a starting collection from naturalist Edwin Carter. In 2019 the museum served 2.3 million peoplem, making it the third largest natural history museum in the country. Their underlying mission is to inspire people about nature and science. They imagine an empowered community where everybody loves, understands, and protects the natural world.

DMNS is the most active natural history museum by some measures, such as their 1,800+ volunteers or 65,000 households as members (pre-pandemic) . That amount of community involvement speaks volumes about the people and the purporse involved.

Doug and George discuss the role of both profits and purpose for organations - whether a non profit like DMNS or a more traditional for-profit organization that wants to do more. Focused mission driven leadership, if authentic and congruent, can play an important role in organizations and society. That being said, it’s important to avoid marketing-only initiatives or especially any form of hypocracy, less an organization could do more harm than good. Fortunately most people really do care about a strong purpose, in addition to caring about a strong business plan that can ensure continuing succes into the future.

Some notable exhibitions upcoming at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science: -Survival of the Slowest -The Science of Guitars (Sneak peak ahead: next year there will be a big new exhibit on Egypt!)

You’ve likely heard that the price of lumber has skyrocketed this year. You may or may not have heard about a price pull back from the recent high. To learn more about the market and what might be reasonable expectations for the future, Doug Draper dives into the subject with John Duncanson - Executive V.P. of Corton Capital, Inc. and Timber Analyst on the Corton Global Timber Fund.

They begin with discussing John’s background as a professional forester, experience in lumber & finance, up to the formation of Corton Capital in 2019. The fund is designed to provide direct access to the lumber market, compared to the limited options previously available. This year they’ve seen their fund have growth of 50% after the rise and pullback.

John then explores and explains the various demand side trends that are driving the recent price change. He also describes the more chronic trend of supply side reductions with permanent closures of mills and processing facilities. While John is based in Toronto, he is well aware of Colorado’s pine beetle kill off - the markets are connected, as well as the ecosystems as insects don’t stop at state or national borders. Today on Uptime Logistics, Doug Draper meets with Paul Bradette - Executive Director of MineConnect - to discuss advanced mining technologies. In addition to important safety and productivity improvements, these newer technologies are also playing a role in green and sustainability initiatives. Listen to today’s show to learn more!

  • Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) are improving the uptime of operating underground. In addition to electrical charging, regenerative braking can help even further. Research & development is pursuing safer battery chemistry to further reduce risk in the prevention of fires. Paul sees more innovation and technology transfer happening - technologies that become developed for mining industry could also be very useful for above ground vehicles moving forward on the surface.
  • Internet of things - the intelligent monitoring of people and equipment throughout the mine site can dramatically improve safety, efficiency, and insights into what piece might need planned maintenance or immediate replacement. These insights are helpful for maintaining operational uptime and improving the bottom line. CAP Logistics can reduce the time between failure and recovery, and you can learn more about Uptime Logistics here.
  • Green initiatives are important in the mining industry, as it has been for many other industries. Through BEVs and other technologies, there’s been substantial progress on reducing energy usage and improving air quality. Lower costs on aspects like energy-intensive vehicles directly through operation - in addition to the fact that heat is reduced and less energy needs to be spent on air circulation. The advanced mining technologies also help the economics of accessing deeper deposits than would otherwise be possible. While the cost upfront will be more, the importance of safety and improved access to resources help drive the bottom line.

Based out of Ontario, MineConnect is made up 190 companies collectively employing around 9,000 individuals and producing around $3.5 billion a year. Coming up soon, they are looking to open a location in Elko, NV to develop that bilateral relationship. MineConnect members’ expertise can help Nevada operators in transitioning from open pit methodology to under ground hard rock mining and Nevadans can help Canadians with open pit. Collaboration will help drive mutual success. As for future looking trends, Paul sees an increase in autonomous and telerobotic mining. There will be less need for people to be underground if they can control machines from the surface, or potentially from home through the internet.

Wheeler Machinery supports its customers with heavy equipment and parts. They are primarily an official Caterpillar dealer, though they also carry other complementary product lines to support production.

Chris Williams and Justin Semadeni with Wheeler Machinery discuss how they provide their customers uptime while helping balance their equipment inventory. What do you do when a part isn’t available? That’s where high levels of relationships and problem solving really come into play to keep or get the customers up and running.

Heavy machinery serves many different important roles in various industries including power generation, mining, and construction. The common thread is production. If those machines aren’t running, those projects aren’t producing and those people aren’t earning money. That’s why it’s important to put that piece of equipment back to work. Looking ahead, Chris also discusses the future of heavy equipment parts, advanced analytics, and even how technologies like 3D printing can take the supply chain to a next level in the next 5 to 10 years.

FreeWave Technologies’ Precision Ag solutions help connect farm operations in an intelligent way. John Stratton, Software Product Line Manager, joins Doug Draper to discuss these emerging technologies. FreeWave’s remote and rugged condition monitoring and communication tools use long range radio equipment, edge computing devices, and comprehensive data analytics to improve decision making cycles and operational success.

What is Precision Ag? John describes how data monitoring sensors implemented throughout farm operations can reduce expensive inputs while improving decision making and increasing yields and ROI. With much of the Industrial Internet of Things there is a cloud component, though with the remote locations of many areas of a farm’s operation and the lack of a reliable internet access there, it also makes sense to use edge computing where appropriate - analyzing data at the edge of the network.

Farm operations are diverse, and so are the applications of this technology. In terms of productivity and profits, precision ag solutions help with retrieving data that people never previously had access to, or making data much easier to gather - and update the data much more frequently. As a result, this helps with improving and shortening decision cycles.

Some examples might be in herd management, where each cow might have a collar with RFID or GPS to track their location, temperature, etc to improve feeding consistency and reducing stress on the animals. During growing season, monitoring soil moisture can help improve the effectiveness of center pivot irrigation and remote well pads. One study by Machine Design found that using automated equipment might be able to reduce agrochemical inputs by 90%. For harvested plant product storage, monitoring and maintaining targets temperatures and humidity levels is a crucial application, whether it’s for keeping hay from spontaneously combusting or keeping grains and potatoes in perfect condition for market.

“The great thing about remote monitoring is that you can tell yourself what you need, without having to tell everyone else.” Individuals can get custom information specifically relevant to what they are responsible for handling, increasing insights without drowning in irrelevant noise.

Farming is always evolving with technology, and the future holds more opportunity in connecting real world data with edge or cloud based services for analysis. Hybrid connectivity is possible for certain types of data and ranges in order to build more resiliency. Having this data available at your fingertips makes a difference by helping farmers make better decisions, and faster. Instead of weeks, decisions can be made within the same day an issue arises, supporting operational uptime and productivity, shortening the decision cycle or even making it automatic.

Jim Whitt with Purpose Unlimited comes onto the Uptime Logistics Podcast to discuss water rights and water conservation. Coming from an agricultural background working with cattle and oil businesses, he consults with clients both on purpose driven leadership and water rights, water conservation, and water management.

Water management is about stewarding our most important natural resources. “Without water, we do not survive.” It plays into the economy and our daily lives through many pathways. One example they explore is the 174,000 square-mile Ogallala aquifer that rests below seven states: South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas. That aquifer irrigates a large percentage of our crops for food production here in the US and around the world. This region produces $20 billion worth of food annually. Despite the current challenges of droughts, Jim discusses several water conservation strategies that have been showing exciting potential for the future.

They also discuss the 50 year water vision put forward in the state of Kansas. They created water conservation areas where people with water rights were given the choice to accept more freedom in moving water around as long as they agreed to pump less water overall. They also created water technology farms as a a demonstration to test and showcase new opportunities to increase or maintain yields while reducing water consumption. People are realizing that farms are worth much if they don’t have access to water, so there’s increasing willingness to join in creative and cooperative policies, behaviors, and technologies.

As for technology, Jim describes one tested solution called Dragon Lines from Teeter Irrigation as a major improvement to pivot irrigation. With traditional pivots, a lot of water is lost to evaporation. Adding in advanced drip line techniques can improve pivot performance dramatically, saving at 20-50% of water use among other benefits. “It’s one of the biggest things technology wise I’ve seen in my lifetime.”

Today on Uptime Logistics, Doug Draper of the Denver Transportation Club interviews “Chip”, an anonymous AOG Manager with a major US airline. After learning a bit about Chip’s background, they discuss all things Aircraft on Ground (AOG) – from what the term means, to overcoming challenges in the supply chain, and why it’s so important to get it right.

Downtime is expensive for businesses generally and in the case of passenger airplanes, each individual flight is important to the people needing to travel. Parts naturally break down and replacements are needed. Other times Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) services are required. Either way, it’s critical to keep a cool head during an AOG crisis, and it definitely helps to have great suppliers and transportation partners on board to help keep flight operations running smoothly – or return to uptime as soon as possible.

Listen today to learn and gain a new level of appreciation for those behind the scenes that keep the aircraft we know and love up and running! https://www.caplogistics.com/cap-logistics/2020/9/10/managing-aircraft-on-ground-aog-uptime-logistics

Today on Uptime Logistics, Doug Draper interviews Steven & Denice Marin, the founding team behind 316 Aviation based in in Pembroke Pines, Florida. 316 Aviation is a full-service aviation support company. They provide technical support in locating part numbers, freight quotes, order consolidation and service after the sale, helping from start to finish.

Since an aircraft on ground (AOG) situation represents significant cost, there are challenges in finding, sourcing, and delivering these critical parts in a timely fashion. They describe AOG and the importance of having ongoing relationships with quality vendors in order to become a reliable source for clients. One thing that makes them so uniquely helpful is through leveraging volume and relationships in order to stock, source, and ultimately deliver aircraft parts and repair services at the best prices and in the quickest time periods.

They also discuss the business strategies they applied in planning for the supply chain disruptions of COVID-19 to keep the business going, support employees, and help customers as much as possible. Today - July 1st, 2020 - marks the beginning of the USMCA taking effect. Sometimes referred to as NAFTA 2.0, this free trade agreement updates, modernizes, and extends trade rules between the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Many are celebrating the news – as designing and negotiating international trade agreements can be challenging, though expanding quality trade relationships can provide a lot of extra value and benefits.

To dive into this topic, Doug Draper is joined by Stéphane Lessard, Consul General of Canada in Denver. Stéphane has been in this position for the last four years helping, representing, facilitating, and developing relationships between Canada, Colorado, and other US States in the region including Montana, Utah, Kansas, and Wyoming.

Doug and Stéphane start off the USMCA discussion with adopting a longer time frame perspective – looking at the origins and benefits of NAFTA and even earlier trading. As Stéphane notes, “Our people, our countries have always traded. We’ve traded for centuries.” Then with NAFTA in particular, the three countries changed the way they trade and began actually making things together by integrating the other countries more deeply into their supply chains. In this collaborative way, North America as a whole has become more competitive with other trading regions around the world. As one example statistic of this prosperity, in 2019 US-Canada trade was roughly $2 billion each day!

Doug then asks the broader questions about what will change for businesses and citizens as the new USMCA agreement takes effect. As it is a continuation of free trade, it appears that not too much will change between NAFTA and the USMCA – or CUSMA as it’s known in Canada. In the early process of negotiating and renegotiating, there was a lot of uncertainty which introduced risk and costs for everyone involved. So broadly speaking, the main benefit of this new agreement resides in reintroducing certainty, predictability, and stability – allowing businesses and investors to do what they do best, while more fully connecting the the countries citizens and companies.

Watch or listen to the full show to learn more about the big picture of the USMCA, as well as some of the specific new changes impacting labeling requirements for auto manufacturing, increased market access for grain & dairy producers, and new rules encompassing digital trade. Additionally, there are some new features on dispute settlements as well as higher labor & environmental standards

Today on Uptime Logistics, Doug Draper visits with Dave Young with USI Insurance and also CU Denver Business School. He’s been in property and casualty insurance for 32 years and is a specialist in a variety of trucking, industrial, and enterprise risk. They discuss ELDs, trucking insurance, enterprise risk mitigation, future trends and unknowns with AI beginning to drive trucks, and finally some of his recommendations.

In addition to insurable property and casualty damage, Dave explores other business risks that aren’t always associated with insurance though ones that are still risks needing to be mitigated such as damage to reputation, supply chain failure, and financial risks that could be hedged.

David sees the future of the trucking insurance market to become more competitive, with rates increasing across the board to the point where it could a major differentiating factor for trucking carriers and many other businesses out there. Those that are best in class will have better access to affordable coverage for themselves and their customers. While there are still many unknowns with automated trucks, it currently seems like they might have a lower risk on incident. Dave recommends getting creative in anticipating risks and designing more efficient risk transfer programs to protect the trucking and client companies.

Today, Doug & Roy dive in to the overall topic of “What are Incoterms Rules?” and discuss the new 2020 update to the rules that are now in effect worldwide.

INCOterms is an acronym for INternational COmmercial terms. While the rules are not laws themselves as many people misinterpret them to be, they are a set of globally standardized terms that parties can agree to for legally binding contracts. Incoterms rules define the risk and responsibilities of each party in an international shipment. Better understanding Incoterms rules can help businesses in many ways, such as reducing risks and increasing control over shipments.

Roy Becker’s background in the supply chain comes from his career in finance as an international banker. From that position, he observed how closely transportation was related to payments, so he ended up learning more and more about the Incoterms rules to better advocate for his clients. Today, he is involved with his business Roy Becker Seminars and is an instructor at the University of Colorado Denver and the World Trade Center Denver.
