This is a band that not only features Alfie and his former DI band mate Sean Elliott, but also Paul Gray and Rat Scabies from The Damned! We not only talk about the band and the new record—we also talk about the documentary that was released last year about he and his brothers Frank and Rikk who were each staples of the early 80’s Orange County punk scene. A scene in which the Agnew brothers were be in such bands like Social Distortion, The Adolescents, TSOL, 45 Grave, and many others. The name of the film is called “Agnew: The Story of a California Family”. On top of that, we also talk about Alfie’s second career as the head of the Mathematics Department at Cal State-Fullerton and a member of the school’s Gravitational Wave and Physics Astronomy Center (one of the biggest in the US). This week Baxie talks with bass player Darryl Jenifer from Bad Brains—the most important and revered hardcore band in history! But don’t be fooled by the label! Bad Brains were a band out of Washington DC whose roots were steeped in both reggae and jazz fusion. And yet, Bad Brains were the band that every other hardcore band looked up to. And while some may have focused on their wild musicianship, speed, and precision—the real important part of this band was its message of unity and positivity. And that may have been what separated Bad Brains from just about everybody else. Darryl has just released his second jazz-inspired solo album called “Weather Channel”. It’s an album that includes some amazing jazz heavyweights (John Modeski, Ben Perowsky, the late Jack DeJohnette, and several others). The record also draws from funk, dub, and psychedelia as well. He also tosses in a couple of re-arranged Bad Brains classics as well. Darryl talks about the record, the legacy of Bad Brains, about the misunderstandings of their lead singer HR, and much more! Baxie talks with Scott Phares from The Hollywood Stars. The Hollywood Stars were a band that was hand selected by the notorious Kim Fowley to be the West Coast answer to the New York Dolls. While things didn’t exactly work out that way, the Hollywood Stars attempted to record several albums that were either abandoned or sat on the shelves for several decades. And yet, two of their songs were taken by producer Bob Ezrin and appeared on what would become platinum albums for both KISS and Alice Cooper! (“King of the Nighttime World” from KISS’s Destroyer” and “Escape” which appeared on Cooper’s Welcome to My Nightmare). In 2013 released their previously unreleased album “Shine Like a Radio”. Six years later they released their second lost album “Sound City”. Both were released to great critical acclaim.In 2024 the Hollywood Stars reformer and released the album “Starstruck” which was also well received. And on July 17th the Hollywood Stars released their latest album, “Hey L.A.”. And it’s even better! One of the great comeback stories in Rock history! For 33 years Paul built an amazing track record of single handedly getting some of the most legendary recording artists in history on the radio, into the charts, and selling records by the millions. Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Bill Joel, Aerosmith, Journey, Santana, Judas Priest, Alice in Chains, Psychedelic Furs, and countless others owe a great deal of their success to Paul’s work at Columbia. The man is a true record industry legend. Paul has just released what is perhaps the single most accurate account of the wild relationship between radio and the record industry in the 1970’s, 80’s, and early 90’s ever written in his new book “Gliders Over Hollywood: Airships, Airplay, and the Art of Rock Promotion”. . This is a record that reflects the grief, loss, and isolation he felt while serving as the live-in caretaker for him grandmother who passed away after a long battle with Alzheimer's. On top of that, Jacob also felt the loss of his mother sadly died of breast cancer. Jacob talks about the difficult journey he experienced while shouldering such tremendous grief while fighting his own battle mental health battles. The end result is an album which not only saved his life--it's a record that truly left me speechless. Simply brilliant! Baxie talks to the legendary Kira Roessler! From 1983 to 1985 Kira found herself touring with Black Flag (arguably one of the most important hardcore bands in history). During that time, Kira recorded three albums, three EPs, and toured relentlessly with Black Flag. Simultaneously she was also busy studying for a degree in applied engineering from UCLA. Kira also recorded several albums under the name DOS with her then husband Mike Watt from The Minutemen. But that’s not the end of it. Kira has also had a very successful career in film—winning an Oscar in sound editing for Mad Max: Fury Road. She’s also won two Emmy awards for her work on the John Adams miniseries and for Game of Thrones. Kira is about to release her second solo album “Enigma” on July 10th. The record was produced by her brother Paul Roessler (formerly of The Screamers and 45 Grave). Just an amazing conversation with one of the most important women in punk rock! This week Baxie talks with legendary bass player Tony Marsico! Tony was not only the bass player for The Plugz--one of the first predominantly Latino punk bands. The were also the band that scored the 1984 film “Repo Man”. After The Plugz the band rebranded themselves as the The Cruzados. The Cruzados were quickly signed by Clive Davis from Arista records and released two outstanding records until breaking up in 1987. But Tony hardly stopped there. Since the band's original break up Tony became one of the most in-demand session players in America. His list of credits includes the likes of Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Roger Daltry, Marianne Faithful, Willie Nelson, Linda Ronstadt, the Divinyls, Juliana Hatfield, Matthew Sweet, and many more. He also found time to release 25 solo albums, act in several feature films, write four books, and revive the Cruzados in 2021. Tony talks about all of that—and a whole lot more! Just amazing! The News. In 1990 John started a project with Keith Knudsen from the Doobie Bros and Stu Cook from CCR. Together they recorded an album under the name Jackdawg. Unfortunately, that was shelved before it got released following the death of their manager. The record would go unreleased for 18 years. Baxie speaks with Neil Gust from Heatmiser and No.2. In 1991 Neil Gust and the late Elliott Smith formed Heatmiser in Portland, Oregon soon after graduating from Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass. Heatmiser would release three albums including the critically acclaimed “Mic City Sons” in 1996. By this point Elliott Smith began her legendary solo career (which included six studio albums and a Grammy nomination for the music of the film Good Will Hunting). Neil Gust went on to form his own band, No.2, which released two exceptional records before leaving music for a very success career in commercial video editing. 20 years later Neil Gust would reform No.2 and release an amazing comeback album—“First Love” in 2022. Earlier this year, Gust released a great compilation of unreleased tracks with Elliott Smith entitled “The Music of Heatmiser”. Absolutely amazing! On one hand it’s a band that sold more than 35 million albums with classic hits like Ballroom Blitz, Fox on the Run, and Love is Like Oxygen. Since then, three of the original members formed their own separate versions of the band—often operating at the same time. In 2008 original bass player Steve Priest formed his own versions of the band. Sadly in 2020, Steve Priest died at the age of 72. However, both Steve Priest and his family bestowed the responsibility of curating the Sweet’s legacy to Richie Onori and Stevie Stewart. They not only continued as Sweet they’ve also recorded new material. It’s an incredibly interesting story. One that offers a new take on what it means to keep a rich musical heritage intact. On April 18th Gang of Four will kick off their final tour of the United States beginning in Westport, CT on April 18th, two days later they'll appear at the Chrystal Ballroom in Boston. Since initially leaving the band in 1984 Hugo has gone on to playing sessions with PiL, ABC, and several others. He also served as the manager for Shriekback and Julian Cope. He’s also served as an A&R Representative for Island Records as well. More recently he’s enjoyed a successful academic career—having served as the Dean of Students at the New England Institute of Art in Boston. This was a collaboration between himself and the late Andy Rourke--former bass player for the Smiths. Although the record was scheduled to be released in 2022, those plans were cut short due to Andy's declining health. Last year, following his death of pancreatic cancer at the age of 59, Andy urged Kav to go ahead and release the album. It's a powerful and poignant story. The record is not only amazing, it also includes guitar performances from Johnny Marr. This is the first time that Andy and Johnny had played together since The Smiths broke up 37 years ago! Just two years after promoting Skafish as a groundbreaking genius, IRS rejected 8 of the 11 songs on the record for being too controversial. For the last 40 years Jim Skafish has fought to regain the rights to his own music which had been largely out of print and unavailable since 1985. Jim has not only released his self-titled debut album from 1979, he has just released the entire second album–including all 8 of the songs that were rejected–which can now be heard for the very first time in the reissued entitled “The Conversation & The Rejects”. Baxie talks to former Assistant Secretary of State, Lincoln Bloomfield. Before becoming a US diplomat, Lincoln Bloomfield was the bass player for the Boston-area rock band, Kelakos. In 1978, Kelakos released their first album, "Gone are the Days". But is spite of the album's positive reviews, the band disbanded. In 2015, the master tapes of those recordings fell back into the hands of Lincoln Bloomfield. Those recordings were soon re-issued under the title, "Kelakos Uncorked: Rare Tracks from a Vintage 70's Rock Band". This year, Kelakos released their first album of new material in nearly 45 years, "Hurtling Towards Extinction". Lincoln talks about the album, the band, about the band he formed with former Steely Dan/Doobie Bros. guitar player Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, and about his fascinating career in Washington. The book is an incredibly ambitious story of the complicated history and culture of one of America's most misunderstood cities--Cleveland, Ohio. It's also a story about one of Cleveland's most influential and iconic figures--the late Peter Laughner of the band Pere Ubu. Until now, Laughner's life and legacy has gone largely underrecognized. However, he is responsible for creating some of the greatest anthems in American Punk Rock history! And Aaron's Lange's book does an amazing job connecting Laughner's life to city from where he came. This week Baxie welcomes Roger Joseph Manning Jr. back to the podcast. Roger has not only written, toured, and/or recorded with the likes of Roger Waters, Beck, Adele, JayZ, Johnny Cash, Brian Wilson and many others--he was also one of the co-founders of the band Jellyfish. In the early 1990's Jellyfish released two albums that, while overlooked at the time, have become essential cult classics. This includes their sadly overlooked 1993 masterpiece "Spilt Milk". An album, which is not one my favorite albums of all time--I'll even go so far as to say it is one of the most astonishing power-pop albums ever recorded! (I'm dead serious). Over the last three years Roger has released 3 EP's with the band The Lickerish Quartet (with former Jellyfish touring members Eric Dover and Tim Smith), he reissued both of his previous solo albums ("Land of Pure Imagination" and "Catnip Dynamite"), he's also just released his latest EP "Radio Daze" on Omnivore Recordings.
