Paul is living out a chaotic joy regardless of his circumstances! He shows in this passage, that whether he lives or dies…he is ready with Joy. He can talk about death in the same sentence he talks about joy…how can this be? What exactly is this “joy,” and why can we experience it alongside a chaotic life?
In order to have joy in living life regardless of death, abuse, slander, gossip, insecurities, persecution, or anything…we need to have the mindset of Paul. His death could come any day (He is in prison), but look what he can proclaim! “For me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” In this short verse we see a mindset on how to look at death, but also how to look at life! He is ready to live for Christ in such a way that he will not be ashamed when he meets Christ (again). He gives three thoughts on how to live this out. Be Unified (v. 27), Be courageous (v.28), and be ready to suffer well (v. 29-30).
How is it possible to find JOY in suffering? Let's learn from Paul's example. He suffered much, but still maintained attitude of joy! How did he do so? He did it by encouraging others, seeing the big picture, and growing in the Lord.
Week two of Chaotic Joy shows us how we can have joy in unity! The Christian's unity is based on the truth of the gospel and a common purpose. Our friendships are built at the deepest level of truth and sincerity.
