I’m Shannon, a backpacker focused on budget travel to the most beautiful destinations in the world. So far I lived in 5 countries (Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Austria and now UAE) and backpacked South East Asia for three months. This week on the podcast I invited my friend Dalton to talk about his travel experience in Australia. We both lived in Sydney for a year and travelled the East Coast partly together. Since he has travelled more of the Coast than me I thought it would be better to have him explain whats to see. Australia is an enormous big country, so you need time for your travels. I would recommend to get a work and holiday visa to make money on the way. There are great options for work, like on a farm to get your second year, or in a big city to get a regular job in a Restaurant (very popular and easy to get work) or office (more difficult to find since they would like to keep you longer and you can work max 6 months for the same company). When you arrive in Australia you are most likely to fly into a big city first. Get your SIM card straight away, we chose Vodafone because of their personal mixed plans and good connection. To leave the airport its easy to take public transport train or bus depending on the city. Once settled in to the new environment we recommend to buy a car from a local person which you can find on gumtree. Make sure how long the WOF is going for and get it registered. This week I have Sean on the podcast. First we met in Malaysia. Afterwards we travelled for a week together in Indonesia so on our last night in Lombok we created this episode. It’s a beautiful memory for me, so thank you so much for joining! Everyone we met thought we where dating and travelled around together for months now. I think that’s says a lot about us and our connection. Still! We weren’t dating at all, just really good friends and at the time I really needed this. There was never any pressure or tension between us just as I have it with my best girl friends. We both love travelling and in the podcast we share really crazy stuff with you. Life lessons, first experience with drugs and how to not give a shit about others and their thoughts about you. We talked about it and the answers are all in the podcast. This episode was originally recorded back on Langkawi, Malaysia when I was there around the beginning of September. On the show I talk to Eric who is US born and never really left the country till 26 going to South East Asia. Being drunk at a strip club made him apply for a door staff job. His former boss recommended him to stay in a hostel on a 4 day vacay, what made him in the end fall in love with the idea of going to Asia through the people he has met there. For two years he worked a lot and saved all the money he could to head out. We also talk about hitch hiking in Asia, meeting constantly new inspiring people and the lessons we both learned so far. Also you will listen to the deep depression you can built if you live every day the same and how important the drive of curiosity is. This really is one of my favourite episodes! Starting my trip in Hà Nội Vietnam I stayed at the cocoon in Hostel located in old quarter, city center. A must do is to visit the train street and local beer place where you can have beer for 5k only. With my travel mates I went to Sapa it takes about 5 hours from Hà Nội. You should definitely go to a homestay there, because the locals will do trekking with you through the rice fields and at night you have amazing dinner with them and happy water (rice wine) and karaoke. Afterwards you can take a 5 hour bus to Ha Giang. There you can stay at the lila in hostel. An amazing easy rider is Sliwly you could also take him as your tour guide. The loop takes 4 days. Afterwards take a night bus to Cat Ba. A good hostel is secret garden, but we booked the Ha Long Bay day Tour with the Central backpackers hostel because it was cheaper. After Cat Ba head to Ninh Bình to relax. The golden mountain is a good hostel. Than take a night bus to Hue. The abandoned waterpark is a must see. Rent bikes with Hue motorbike, good service and they drop your bags in your hostel in Hoi An. Hoi An is a great place to chill and stay for longer. Stay at the Tribe Ede it’s the best because it’s quiet but they organise parties in different locations for you. Check out Banh Mi Queen, Phi Banh Mi and our absolute favourite Banh Mi Phuong. If you like a suit get it done in Hoi An. Also they have the Festival of Lights once a month. The old town is beautiful especially at night. During the day you can check out the beaches. After Hoi An I took a flight to Ho Chi Minh City but don’t forget to book your luggage with vietjet they really are so strickt about it! In general i wouldn’t recommend this airline at all so if you can fly AirAisa/Malindo do that instead. In Saigon go and see the backpacker street, War Museum and the tunnels. For the tunnels take a local bus to Dia Dao Cu Chi with the number 13 and than 79. If you have any further questions about Vietnam don’t hesitate to contacted me via Instagram @shannon.feld. This week I have Rameez from the UK on the show to talk about his travel journey! When he was 18 he promised himself to go on a gap year trip around the world. Growing up in an Asian cultured family they’ve expected him to do his study’s first. He agreed on it and started to work after his studies. 10 years later he realised there is still this one thing he wanted to do when he was 18! To go and explore the outside world. 8 months ago he left the UK and has travelled to amazing places such as Australia, Japan, Korea, Cambodia, teaching English in the Philippines and Malaysia. He shares his experience and how he coped with the reactions of others about his decision because he already worked in a job he loved. He was very happy with his life back home, fulfilling job with travel opportunities, great friends and the family around, but his best friend who left to travel as well inspired him to go for it as well. What a story! You can’t escape the travel bug. Thank you so much Rameez for being my guest.
Jan is 31 years old and from Germany. He studied electrical engineering. To go on short backpacking trips around Europe and ending a long term relationship made him decide to take a year off of work and take the time to travel. First his boss didn’t like the idea of him leaving work to travel, but he was able to convince him and win his support in following his dreams.
