So close to finishing!
For anyone new, I have been working on a course teaching people how to Sing the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Latin since 2020. Recently someone asked about the Psalm tone I was using for Compline compared with page 158 of the Baronius Press book, so I made a technical video exploring what was going on there - you'll have to get the course to find the video. In the process, I updated the booklets - available at littleoffice.brandt.id.au. Today I got around to fixing up the Psalm tone in a recording with one of my sons.
So now you have the definitive way to sing Compline from the Little Office.
Except I've still got the Monastic Sub Tuum in there, but no one has asked me about that yet, so it's staying for now as a nod to Maternal Heart Church, Lewisham.

We sang this as an intermission procession for a production of The Man Born to Be King at the Great Hall in Sydney University. That was my introduction to it. The whole audience processed out after the Crucifixion, giving the stage crew time to change the set.

You guys probably all go to the Easter Vigil and sleep in on Easter Sunday, don't you? Well, some really cool stuff happens while you guys are all sleeping. Easter Sunday has this little known optional procession.
Do you need a translation here when the words are in the video?
Way back when I put A New Book of Old Hymns together, I could not find a translation anywhere. Now they seem to abound on the internet! So many different versions though! There are even variations for Ascension Thursday and Pentecost.
Salve festa dies toto venerabilis aevo

I went with the "est vera" version thinking that it would be the better version as the new books were using it - like the way some of the Pre-Urbanite versions of hymns were being revived. Unfortunately, this isn't the way most of the groups I sing with sing it. "Ubi caritas et amor" is pretty entrenched. If I ever get around to the new version of A New Book of Old Hymns, this is one of many little changes to be made.

This one's a classic hymn to accompany the Stations of the Cross. The Latin is so brief and concise and beautiful. There's also a Sequence version with a bit more variety to the tune, but when I put together A New Book of Old Hymns, this simpler one was the only one I knew.

I love how the chorus repeats in two parts. Keeps you awake figuring out which chorus comes next. Also makes it a bit more interesting to sing along the chorus. And it is beautiful - recounting the story of Redemption from Eden to Bethlehem to the Upper Room to Calvary to Heaven.

Everyone should know this one. I keep assuming everyone does, and that's probably why I haven't recorded it already. This is one I loved reading in our parish hymnbook during Mass way back in the 80s, in the Gerard Manley Hopkins translation without the Pelican verse. I would spend Mass memorizing it, even though I'm not sure if I understood it all.

Jesu Rex Admirabilis is one part of St Bernard of Clairvaux's Really Long Poem. The other popular part is Jesu Dulcis Memoria.
Giovanni Pierluigi Palestrina arranged it in this beautiful three part motet.

Today is the feast of Mary Help of Christians, so here's another Marian Hymn.
Pope Urban VIII, way back in the 15th century, decided to fix all the hymns. ALL THE HYMNS. This is generally considered today to have been a BAD IDEA. One of the positive things to have come out of Vatican II was the restoration of some of the older hymns.
Here is the pre-urbanite version of the hymn we now know as Memento Rerum Conditor:
Memento, salutis Auctor,
Quod nostri quondam corporis,
Ex illibata Virgine
Nascendo, formam sumpseris.
Maria, mater gratiæ,
Mater misericordiæ,

Day 16 of #100daysofchant
This Sunday we have a sung Mass, so this is a good chance to get more practice with the propers. The Communion antiphon appeared on Day 13 (17 May 2022). The Offertory is in the pipeline - probably Day 18 (22 May). The Alleluia defeated me, so I might do a separate video on how to use Chant Tools to simplify any of the propers.

This is the most common hymn in the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary. My kids know this one off by heart from singing Prime most mornings.
It's also a redux of my most popular video on YouTube. I think because it was the first recording of that hymn on that platform.

It's not very well known, so it's a bit hard to find a translation, but here's my best shot off the top of my head, mostly:

At morning hour, divine power arose like a strong lion, breaking the gates, alleluia.

You can see from the rhyming structure that it must be relatively recent. It feels natural to sing it with a fairly strong beat.

I love the juxtaposition of sorrowful hearts and Alleluia! There's a De Profundis - Out of the depths I have cried to Thee O Lord, Alleluia - I think towards the end of the liturgical year.

Back to Communion verses as an easy option, though this one has an accidental, so maybe not the easiest one this Sunday.

Day 10 / 100 day Gregorian chant challenge
The Legion of Mary enjoins its members to pray the rosary and the Catena each day. Some parts really lend themselves to chanting. I've taken the Antiphon from a Communion Antiphon from the Mass of Our Lady Mediatrix of All Graces.

Day 9 / 100 Day Gregorian Chant Challenge
A few years ago we had a priest keen to promote First Friday devotions. Now, the devotion to the Sacred Heart is fairly recent compared to most Gregorian chant. We can find references to Jesus heart being pierced with a lance and echoes in earlier music, but Sacred Heart hymns tend to be more recent.
This one is from Cantus Selecti, and I'm not sure of its history before that.

Day 8 of 100 day Gregorian chant challenge.
I had the honour to sing at two funerals recently. The music for the Requiem Mass and burial and everything is so right. This chant is sung after Mass, either at the burial or if that is delayed, then it can be sung at the church.
The words come from a conversation between Jesus and Martha before he raised her brother Lazarus from the dead.
The canticle in the middle is from the Morning prayer of the Church. Prayers said on rising from bed are fitting for thoughts on the final resurrection.
Ego sum resurrectio et vita: qui credit in me, etiam si mortuus fuerit vivet: at omnia qui vivit et credit in me, non morietur in aeternum.
I am the resurrection and the life, he that believes in me, even if he dies, he shall live; and everyone who lives and believes in me shall not die forever.

This the oldest known hymn to Mary.
There is a slightly different Roman version, but we picked up the Monastic version at the Maternal Heart of Mary Church, Lewisham and it has stuck.

3/100 - 100 day challenge
Today is the First Friday of May. Jesus asked St Margaret Mary Alacoque for reparation to the Sacred Heart on the first Friday of each month.
This short chant is the Communion Antiphon for Votive Masses of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Paschaltide - Easter through to Trinity Sunday.
The Latin translates as:
If anyone thirst, let him come to Me and drink. Alleluia, Alleluia.

I stayed up late recording Matins, all three nocturns, nearly two hours of audio. Here's the first part - the Invitatory - Psalm 94.
My impression is that the monks would often run late for Matins as getting up in the middle of the night is a herculean task. So, to give them a little 5 minute grace period, they would always start with Psalm 94, which is kind of a combination of "Come, let us adore Him" and "God's been really patient with us, this is the least we can do to thank Him". I'm happy to hear if you have any other views on the role of the Invitatory.
In the modern day Liturgy of the Hours, the Invitatory has become an independent piece to be sung at the beginning of whatever hour you say first in a day.
You notice the short antiphon is repeated between each stanza. The cantor would lead with the antiphon, then everyone would repeat it (that's why I sing it twice at the beginning), then the cantor sing the verses and every join in on the antiphons. The Liber and other books only give the first few notes of the Antiphon to start you off, but to make this really easy, I've pasted the full music on the screen, so I hope I hear you singing along with me!

The Midday Hour from the Office of the Dead.
Off topic, but you may have come across mention of the noon-day devil in the Psalm for Sunday Compline - which has been linked with Acedia which is maybe something like depression or sloth. Midday can be a struggle sometimes - that feeling of wanting to quit, so much struggle before us. Psalms are great for bringing us back to trusting in God. Acknowledging life is not heaven. Heaven is on the other side.

Prime - Prima means the first, so this is the first hour of the day from sunrise.

It's great for processions - one person has all the heavy lifting and the rest float along with the easy responses.
Some places recite this during Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament - which used to seem odd to me, but Our Lady carried Our Lord, so there is a strong link between the Holy Eucharist and Mary.

Yesterday I was excited to make a video of Compline - taking the previous recording and putting all the pages from the booklet on the screen.
In my enthusiasm and conceited checking of stats, I forgot to post this recording, which I now post belatedly.
I think it's still in time for those over on the American side of the world.
This is the first recording we have made for Saturday in Paschaltide. Last Saturday we sang a Requiem Compline for ANZAC Day and the Saturday before that was in the Easter Octave.
There was a bit of distraction going on towards the end of the Psalms. Our youngest was walking/rolling towards the microphone, wrapped up in a sleeping bag. It was a chilly evening here.

We had a great day today, but exhausting, and our usual bringer of calm and gravity went to bed early. Our most junior member also went to bed early, but the influence of the two polar opposites being absent did not balance completely, and you hear some stifled chuckles, and not-so-stifled giggles, in this recording.
So, this is Compline for a First Class Feast during Paschaltide.

Tonight's recording is one of the clearest so far - no coughs or hiccups as far as I can tell. Our youngest singer was being a bit cheeky at times, but she is much quieter on the recording than she seems during the recording.
Also, we have a new photo of our zoom microphone which is a bit more relevant than the elaborate church interior which had been chosen from a range of stock photos, so I don't even know which church it is. Here's to liturgical activities in the home! Still, very much looking forward to churches being reopened. We'll keep praying!
Tonight we had a call from my mother, Teresa. Instead of calling back later, I thought we may as well have her join in. She's fairly quiet on the recording and there's a bit of a lag - I think it was more distracting when singing than listening. If it is too distracting you can find last week's Tuesday in Paschaltide on compline.brandt.id.au.
Tonight our toddler was wide awake (and still is while I type) so you can probably hear her chattering away in places in the recording. It doesn't seem nearly as distracting playing it back as it was while recording. She sings along while I'm editing the file - there's hope yet!

In Australia and New Zealand we commemorate our fallen soldiers on the 25th April, the anniversary of the Gallipoli landing in World War II. While the rest celebrate the feast of St Mark, we have Requiem Masses for those who died defending their homeland.
So, it's a really short instalment tonight. Flip to Appendix D in your booklets, or have a look in the All Souls Day section if you're using a Liber Usualis or other book. The Psalms are different. You can probably hear us stumble over the unfamiliar syllables.

Today is the feast of St George, patron saint of England. Those in England have a First Class Feast, so would sing Compline with the Sunday Psalms as we did last Sunday.
For the rest of the world, we have a regular Thursday in Paschaltide.
Plus tonight one person had the hiccups. Which makes a change as the one with the coughs was busy on history homework due at midnight.

Tonight's recording is pretty straightforward. The Psalm is the regular Wednesday psalm, but as the Antiphon is the Paschal Alleluia, then the mode of the Psalm is different, so the little bold and italic syllables are different. If you don't care about the bold and italics, then you can just ready the Psalm in the regular part of the booklet. If you do like to know when to change note, then you'll find the psalm in Appendix C with the right "pointing" as they call the bolds and italics.

In other news, today is a Monday in Paschaltide with no other feasts, so we sang the Monday Psalms with the Triple Alleluia Antiphon.

But, after a few evenings without recording, I forgot to set up the microphone beforehand. Luckily the bits we missed were much the same as the previous recordings for Easter Week, so I have edited together a passable version for your edification.

Tonight we are all tired. Some of us stayed up late watching the Easter Vigil last night. Some of us sustained minor burns with experiments with candles during the Exusltet. All of us have eaten much more chocolate than we are accustomed to. So, tonight there were some frayed tempers before Compline.
But, we did it!
Maybe our voices show the strain a little. It would be interesting to record the average pitch of each recording over time and see if that correlates with anything. But for now, this should work as an example for Compline for every night this week.

Well, that was an enormous day! We improvised a home Stations of the Cross with little numbered crosses drawn on small cards tacked around the house. The booklets were from a little book from 1859 on the Internet Archive.
Then we watched Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ.
Then the livestreamed Mass of the Pre-Sanctified from Maternal Heart of Mary Church, Lewisham.
Then we realised we hadn’t said a Rosary yet, plus the Divine Mercy Novena starts today.
So maybe it wasn’t surprising that we were down a few voices for Compline this evening.

Tonight Compline is usually said right after Mass with the Blessed Sacrament in the Altar of Repose. Tonight we are stuck at home watching Mass over the internet, but we still managed Compline.

So, tonight we got the giggles. It sometimes happens. The pause for the examination of conscience sobered us up though and the rest went smoothly.

We watched Mass at Maternal Heart Church this morning and can thoroughly recommend Viewing the recording on Facebook.
This is the place we picked up the Compline habit on their Thursday evening Masses. Legend has it, that in the beginning they only had Mass on Sundays. Thursdays were choir practice days, but then, since everyone was there already, they had Mass too, so they needed to have more choir practice on Tuesdays too.
I'm not sure they still sing Compline after evening Masses. I think they do sing Terce before Sunday Masses. Well, they would if they still had public Sunday Masses.
But it's late, you're just here for Compline, and I understand that.

Daylight Savings ends tomorrow and we ended up staying up a little later than usual planning strategies for Holy Week observance from home, so this recording comes a little late.
Owing to staying up late, we taped a fair bit of inconsequential chatter before starting Compline and I have preserved a snippet at the beginning of tonight's episode for posterity.

Tonight's recording features a clinking spoon from one child who is not quite up to reading along yet and was enjoying a cup of tea slurped from a spoon to help it cool down. Because we're a family, not a monastery. Hopefully it's not too distracting. Penance!
I hope it does inspire more people to pick up the Divine Office, especially when so many are unable to get to Mass. Imagine if every Catholic participated in this way! What a powerhouse of prayer!
And you don't need to be Catholic to join in! Even if you're just interested in singing like the early Christians - this sort of music would be familiar to all those Medieval saints for sure and probably going back much further.

Tonight we have Passion Sunday, sometimes known as First Passion Sunday to distinguish it from Palm Sunday, which is sometimes called Second Passion Sunday. The Sunday psalms become particularly well known. We just have to keep awake to catch the little Passiontide changes here and there.

We sing Compline most nights. We picked it up from Maternal Heart, Lewisham, way back when they sang Roman Compline on Thursday nights after Mass. With kids, things got submerged for a while, but we picked it up again, piece by piece, and now it is a great thing which we can highly recommend for :
- helping get babies to sleep
- giving the cat quality time to be admired while everyone sits down in the living room
- learning Latin
- participating in the Church's Liturgical Life in a totally legitimate and appropriate way

Someone asked for a recording of Matins from the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary. I'm pretty sure practically nobody sings Matins. Except for Tenebrae, and then you're not singing the Little Office Matins. So I've spent hours putting this together and I hope someone finds it useful. And if you're kept awake by someone singing these melodies in the middle of the night, I hope you won't be too mad at me for encouraging such eccentric pass-times.

Even though Matins is not widely sung, it does have some very amazing tunes which really do grow on you after you've sung them through a few times. Even the ones with the funny leaps which you think will never sit in your head, then when you go to fix up the recording a week or so later, they have magically embedded themselves into your subconscious.

Second installment of the grand plan to record the entire Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary! In no particular order.
Here's a spur-of-the-moment recording of Prime from our family morning prayers on the feast of St Nicholas (hence the reference to chocolate for breakfast)
It also includes the anticipated Roman Martyrology from an old book off the Internet Archive which I've had printed through Lulu and painstakingly converted to a webpage - see brandt.id.au for details.
So, being Advent, we take the Office 2 variation. Most of the words are the same as Office 1, but the Antiphon, Little Chapter and Collect are different.
And I really hope to get into the next episode of the New Book of Old Hymns featuring the Christmas music really soon!
My most popular videos on youtube are the ones on how to sing the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary. So many people want to sing this popular devotion from the middle ages.
Baronius Press has published very handsome little copies of the Little Office with the key pieces of chant in an appendix. It is tantalisingly close to enabling people to sing the Office, but it lacks the handy mark-up that choir members would be accustomed to. A complete work would be much bigger. I have made some such booklets at littleoffice.brandt.id.au. Right now there is a long way to go.
In this episode we sing through Lauds from Office 1 as it would be sung from Pentecost through to the end of the Liturgical Year.
Long, long ago, I put together a little hymnbook with all the Gregorian Chant I was hearing at Mass along with English translations. It would bug me that you would need to join the choir and buy expensive Libers in order to sing along to these beautiful melodies. Also it seemed very unfair that in some cases there were no translations available.
In the process I learned a lot about Gregorian Chant, reading square notes and even some Latin. When I excitedly showed my book to other people, many were dismayed as they did not yet know much about reading square notes, so the music was effectively still locked up. The people who were fortunate enough to attend the same amazing parish had heard the music, but that still left many out in the cold.
So, finally I am making recordings to support the book. It's early days yet, but here's hoping this helps.
You may be surprised to learn this episode is in fact edited down a fair bit - there's a good sprinkling of interruptions here and there. Maybe next episode will be a night time recording.
