Vol. IV here, and possibly the last one in the series. Or, the last one for a while at least. This is the very calmest of the calm volumes. Suitable for all aforementioned activities, this one is also actually recommended for falling asleep to. I've been saving these tracks for this volume specifically. Nothing too trebly or doomy, or remotely soundtrack-y over-dramatic. The first few tracks are the "busiest" here, with their slow-motion, intermittent flourishes and rhythms. From there on, the barely-there rhythms disappear and things get even dronier and dreamier. Enjoy...

Volume two, four years on from volume one. This one is a little more focused/cohesive, and while I avoided some of the obvious names on volume one, I've included PiL, The Slits, and The Pop Group here. Some of their deeper and/or instrumental tracks/dubs. A few more vocal moments in the second half as things build up. More volumes to come... Enjoy!

Volume III in this ongoing series of calming, relaxing mixes. Useful to accompany an array of tasks throughout any time time of day ;). This one was a real joy to sequence, mix/layer, and record. Overall, it’s especially sparkly and melodic, like adult lullabies (or just regular ones). There’s a bit of a build-up towards the end, with a choice selection of gorgeous IDM/Techno tracks. But, no matter the BPMs, the mood remains mellow and melodic. Especially noteworthy is the +ONE track “Shao”, which has to be one of the most gorgeous pieces of music ever recorded. Tracklist...

This mix is the exact opposite of calm. If you need an energy boost - here it is. Anxious, itchy, scratchy, manic, jittery Post-Punk songs. But also funky, taut, melodic, and incredibly catchy. I was listening to Fire Engines recently and wondered if there’s anything, anywhere near as good as their song “Get Up and Use Me”. So, I racked my brain and came up with over 60 tracks, which I whittled down to the 30 here. Few match the catchiness and anxious energy of “Get Up and Use Me”, but the rest come close. Anyway, here’s a 3 liter bottle of Coke in musical form. Chug.

So... I’m not about to actually tell anyone to “calm down” these days (well ok, maybe all those anti-maskers, and I guess a ton of other people). The title Calm Down was always tongue-in-cheek. But you knew that. If I had to title this series in an overly serious way, perhaps something like “Calming, Healing, Restorative Energies” would be appropriate. We all need to take time for that at some point. Maybe this music can help.
Volume II, concentrating on natural, organic sounds, as opposed to the electronic, synthetic sounds of Volume I. Think piano, string/wind instruments, etc. There are some electronic sounds, but I've selected ones that have a natural feel. Few vocal moments, but all female. Lots of mixing/overlapping to create new melodies, so if you see any favorites in the tracklist (Cocteau Twins & Harold Budd, Durutti Column, Low, Aphex Twin’s Avril 14th?), hear them in a fresh context. Cheesy, catchy, bizarre earworms. Chintzy electronics, drum machines, treated/processed guitars, often questionable vocals. But impeccably written and conceived. Pop hits that never were, and never will be. For the most part.
This is the wildest, most entertaining mix I've made. Some of the strangest songs you'll ever hear, but also some of the most heartbreakingly gorgeous. There's a little bit of everything included: Electro, Synth-pop, Dub, Dancehall, Hip-Hop, Japanese New Wave, Neue Deutsche Welle, Cambodian pop, Hindustani pop, Detroit Techno, Computer Disco, Italo-Disco, Italo-trance, electronically processed vocals, synthetic slap-bass, whatever the hell Ciccone Youth is, the always uncategorizable cacophony of Men's Recovery Project, six magical seconds of Brian Eno, and an 11-year-old girl. I recorded this mix last summer, a little while after guest DJing with Zach at Nowhere Bar on East 14th St. for his Cruise Control party. I spent an inordinate amount of time on it, and when I listened back to my recording I wasn’t happy with a lot of it. Some of the mixes/transitions, some of the sound levels, etc. So I decided to put it off and maybe re-record it later. I still haven’t, but I’ve decided to now just go ahead and post the warts-and-all recording. It’s still great fun. The mixes I make and post on soundcloud aren’t anything like I’d play out in public. They’re more home/headphone/deep listening kinda things. But this mix is actually what I do play out. This is pretty much most of what I played that night. Recreated for you. With some warts. Tho probably far less warts than when I was actually playing the vinyl that night. Anyway, enjoy! It’s fun fun fun. .
Volume I of II. This Volume is on the Psych/Noise side. Volume II will be more on the Kosmische/Motorik side, and probably poppier. Recorded in one take, no over-dubs or edits. As usual, it’s long. But it’s very colorful, and grooves hard if you’re patient. Enjoy : )

One side of the coin being the previous Yttrium Mix, which concentrated on "natural", acoustic sounds, here's the flip, which concentrates on more "synthetic", electronic sounds. Drone/ambient, to down-tempo, to a stretch of techno/house that I think came out real nice. And a few very special vocal moments included. One take, no overdubs or edits. Dub/Reggae influenced Post-Punk, Industrial, Experimental, etc. from the late 70s and early/mid 80s. A huge influence of the era, especially in England (see Public Image Ltd., The Slits, The Pop Group etc.). There's also some representation here from Japan, Germany, Belgium, and Australia. Some of my all-time favorite tracks bear this influence, from Cabaret Voltaire's "Seconds Too Late" to Holger Czukay, Jah Wobble, Jaki Liebezeit's "How Much Are They?", amongst a handful of others here.
I tried to maintain a nice upwards arc in the tempo/funkiness, but also made sure to have some interesting ups and downs, with an ear to similarities in sounds, for segues and sound compatibility. The beginning of the mix just happens to feature some of the earliest dated tracks I chose. The On-U Sound suite here wasn't intentional actually, but just happened to work out that way when sequencing the tracks. Funny how that happened, but makes complete sense. There are also some songs towards the end with only a vague dub influence (see Fad Gadget, TG), but are some of my favorites and worked nicely. The Upsetters track is more funk than dub so… That takes us to the end, with a suite of particularly unique, authentic dub/reggae/dancehall(!) tracks that showcase a nice range of styles.
Noteworthy… I finalized the track selection for the mix just a couple days before the death of Holger Czukay. The legend himself appears on a whopping four tracks here; the three bearing his name, and Moebius & Plank's "Missi Cacadou". So, in a way, this is also a farewell ode to the immensely inspiring Mr. Czukay. Surely his deeply psychedelic interpretation of the dub sound was influential in itself. Rest in peace.

Around 10 years ago now, when I started a regular DJ night at Heathers in New York City, I had the idea to observe Women's History Month (the month of March). The idea was simple -- to play songs from only female artists (or vocalists at least) for the entire evening. It went on for a few years, to little fanfare, but it was a lot of fun and I thought it was meaningful, and hadn't seen or heard of anyone doing such a theme elsewhere. We even donated our paltry DJ earnings to a local non-profit, RightRides for Women's Safety.
So, I had the idea of recording a mix with this theme. I think it came out pretty great, if I may say so. It's representative of what I'd play out, and contains some of my personal favorites. There's a bunch of legitimate well-known classics in here, but it's not intended to be a "most important female artists" list. It's a mix of songs I would, and have DJ'd out. It’s fun. A bit dark at times, but mostly fun. So, don't get too huffy that there's no Nina Simone, Patti Smith, Bikini Kill, or Beyonce ;)
