It’s the special edition of The Critical Stans. In this episode we lament all the podcasts we could have made, but didn’t because pop culture news never takes a rest. We talk Comic Con Africa and what we learned about cosplay, consent and representation. Nike made a splash on Tuesday when it dropped an ad-campaign with Colin Kaepernick as it’s face with the slogan: “Believe in something. Even if it means sacrificing everything.” Kaepernick is a former San Francisco 49rs quarterback, famous for being the first player to start kneeling during the US anthem before NFL games as a protest against racial inequality and injustice in the country. But what does it mean that brands are so quick to align themselves to political causes when they perpetuate socio-economic inequality by the very base they are premised on? We discuss consumerist ethics and the commodification of activism in episode nine of The Critical Stans.

There’s something for everyone on YouTube from mukbangs to beauty tutorials and prank videos. It’s a platform that’s a dream for representation because just anyone can make a video about almost anything and it’s accessible to everyone with the internet (unless your country blocks content like, ahem, China). But the problem with representation is that sometimes some identities tend to appropriate other identities. With well-known YouTube icons like Superwoman and Timothy Delaghetto adopting blaccent and elements of black culture, serious questions need to be asked about the downside of allowing a free platform for all.
As brown women of South Asian descent in the Indian diaspora, Bollywood has a special place in our hearts. And as humble critics/supporters of the Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra ship, we thought it’s only fitting that we explain to Nick just why Priyanka is a Bollywood queen. [UPDATE: this podcast was recorded before the hosts forever and always decided to unstan PC] One of the biggest movie industries in the world, Bollywood movies are loved by people around the world. We delve into what makes the stories and characters from these movies so popular. It wouldn’t be The Critical Stans without some critique, we take a deep dive into the common tropes used in movies to portray women and the focus on nationalism.

From Harry Potter to Twilight and The Hunger Games, everybody has heard of young adult fiction. Young adult fiction is a literary category that is becoming increasingly popular with more than half of its readership being over the age of 18. YA, as its known for short, is a category that centers young people and their experiences, thoughts and feelings at the heart of the narrative. But this doesn’t mean it’s only intended for teenagers – far from it. Like a billion odd other people, we avidly followed the greatest sporting event of all time, the World Cup. But as women following the World Cup, it’s near impossible to ignore the sexism. From the camera zooming into female fans and sexualising them to former footballers making a fool of themselves on sports talk shows, we were not impressed. In the very first episode of The Critical Stans (2018), Shaazia Ebrahim and Fatima Moosa speak misogyny in football fandoms – but also just fandoms in general.
