Playlist1. 0β²00β³ Sill_Lili by Arovane + Taylor Deupree on Skal_Ghost (12k)Just a fantastic listen all round. Truly a favorite if not THE favorite for 2022! 2. 6β²03β³ Signature by Ambient Jazz Ensemble on London Fields (Here & Now Recordings)An absolutely alive and fun record to listen to - great for focus or just relaxation. Colin Baldry's finest work as AJE to date in my view - I think it's the fullest realization of his musical vision and just a pleasure to behold. 3. 10β²59β³ Crossing At the Shallow by Sam Prekop & John McEntire on Sons Of (Thrill Jockey Records)The sort of record I'd long been waiting for - McEntire and Prekop are two longtime collaborators who have a mutual knack for modular synthesis. Here they're putting out some of the best music I've heard on Thrill Jockey in at least a couple of years. I've truly loved Prekop's solo synth work as well, but this is synergistic. 4. 21β²49β³ Endless Fields by Sunda Arc on Night Lands (Gondwana Records)In the last few years I've really fallen in love with some of the electronic jazz fusion coming out of the UK - particularly work on Gondwana. Sunda Arc is Nick and Jordan Smart, who I first got to know as Mammal Hands. This is an elegant work and a really fantastic second record. Was long anticipated and great to hear it this year. 5. 26β²19β³ Wole by Emeka Ogboh on 3o22'0.66 (Danfotronics)I first discovered Ogboh's music last year and it's just stunning. This record's combination of minimalist electronics and lo-fi field recordings create an immersive atmosphere that drops you right in the center of Lagos' Ojuelegba bus station. I've rarely heard music that creates such as sense of 'thereness.' This record is like traveling without moving - truly outstanding. 6. 37β²57β³ The Starting Errors by K. Leimer on The Starting Errors (Palace of Lights)An absolute beauty of a record even with its catastrophic themes. The title track here, with the voice of Tallula Bentley, is both poignant as a post-mortem on the ravages of Western society, and at the same time utterly compelling in its musical form. I found this easily the most compelling listen of 2022, and a call to action and reform. 7. 47β²27β³ Along the River by Abul Mogard on In a Few Places Along the River (Abul Mogard)This is just a fabulous tune, and as one of three longform tracks really is like turning the musical thermostat to 72 degrees. The repetitive nature of the music recalls elements of The Disintegration Loops, and somehow every cycle in which the minor chord resolves is equally fresh to my ears. 8. 67β²23β³ Knot of Spirit - Synth Version by Caterina Barbieri on Spirit Exit (light-years)This is just a synth masterpiece. I've long admired Barbieri's work and this record just launches into the stratosphere. 9. 77β²12β³ Descending Backwards by Steven R. Smith on Spring (Soft Abuse Records) 10. 86β²06β³ Deep Listening by Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, Superposition, Tara Brach on Innerspace Music (Formless)As a long time Joe Frank fan I have a weakness for dharma talks superimposed over electronic music. Last year's Jon Hopkins release took the cake with an amazing Ram Dass piece. Innerspace Music multiplies that awesomeness by severalfold, incorporating work from some of my favorite musicians alongside the words of instructors like Jack Kornfield, Tara Brach and Ram Dass as well. Amazing. 11. 103β²41β³ The Sparrow by Sam Prekop on The Sparrow (Thrill Jockey)Sam Prekop's modular synth records have become increasingly adventurous and interesting - this one truly takes the cake. A 17-minute opening track that is nothing less than a sonic adventure. A truly lovely record and a great way to end the show on a high note!

Collaboration between Cote (reeds) and Copland (piano) with the Quatuor Saguenay String Quartet. 4. In Select Everlight by G.S. Schray on The Changing Account (Last Resort) πA truly pretty solo record from Gabriel Schray - from Akron, OH no less. Pressing was released in August. 5. Beneath Fleeting Visions by Ochre on Lemodie (15h Anniversary Edition) (Lapsus Records) πThis is a truly awesome record. So yes to a re-press. 6. Monster by Rival Consoles on Overflow (Erased Tapes) πOut December 3rd - Reminds me that one of my favorite shows at The Independent in SF was Rival Consoles opening for Kiasmos. 7. Born In A Tropical Swamp by Secede on Tryshala (Sending Orbs)This is seriously one of my favorite records. 8. They Leave In Autumn by Miwon on A to B (City Centre Offices) 9. Cerroverb by Skee Mask on Compro (Ilian Tape)Fabulous record from 2018. 10. Brambles by Mists Inhabit this Place on Project XII (Deutsche Grammophon)A sweet piece of music for the Project XII compilation record from Brambles. 11. It Was A Ghost Town by Good Weather For An Airstrike on It Was A Ghost Town (Valley View Records) πTom Honey has been extremely prolific these days - always a treat. 12. 18 Minutes of Beautiful Drone by Proem on Twelve Tails (the 1056) πI love a tune that does what it says on the tin. Always enjoyed the literally true song titles from folks like Keith Fullerton Whitman and Fridge.
More than that - this is a particularly cool release as it was all the product of Richard Bailey's live performances streamed over twitch, using a modular synth, some pedals and a few mics. 13. From A Hundred by Isan on Lamenting Machine (Morr Music)ISAN are Robin Saville and Antony Ryan - this record is from 2019. 14. Cluster by Sunda Arc on Tides (Gondwana Records)If you know the Smart brothers' other project Mammal Hands, you'll be amazed at the musical versatility shown here. 15. Deep Space Habitat by Radioactive Man on Luxury Sky Garden (Asking For Trouble) 16. chessa by Shuttle358 on Field (12k)I love Shuttle358. That is all.

Harold Budd passed last year from COVID-19 and left us a lifetime of outstanding music. 5. 27β²44β³ Offering - Valgeir Sigurdsson by Lyra Pramuk on Delta (Bedroom Community) πA cool re-working of Pramuk's prior record 'Fountain' which was recorded entirely with her voice. 6. 37β²22β³ Chapter 1 by Moritz von Oswald Trio on Dissent (Modern Recordings) πCame out in August, a sweet record featuring Laurel Halo (Laurel Anne Chartow) and drummer Heinrich KΓΆbberling. 7. 44β²24β³ Jupiter Melody by Jens Buchert on Jupiter Melodies (jebu records) πThis cool little spacey EP came out on Sept. 10th 8. 50β²11β³ Jeanette by Kelly Lee Owens on Inner Song (Smalltown Supersound)Owens' 2020 record - love this one. 9. 56β²20β³ Refraction pt. 4 by Loscil on Lux: Refractions (Scott Morgan) πA companion piece to Clara (May 2021 release) accompanied by a cool 36-page photo book, available on Bandcamp. 10. 64β²33β³ All Things Burn by Amon Tobin on How Do You Live (Nomark) πReleased on Sept. 24th. 11. 69β²48β³ Sarah & Eve by F.S. It's my favorite on the record (released 1995), and a pretty unique collaboration for Bill Laswell, who usually is doing some pretty loud free jazz. However, in the spirit of Laswell's 'collision music' concept bringing Terre Thaemlitz into the mix is a perfect choice. 3. 33β²44β³ Church Fires by David Newlyn on Church Fires (Polar Seas Recordings) βοΈAn absolutely lovely 40+ minutes of shifting tones, some of the most gentle and enjoyable work I've heard. This came out in 2015, following a few really great records that are a bit more 'conventional' for Newlyn (more making use of his skills as a pianist). 4. 77β²30β³ Static Nocturne by Eluvium on Static Nocturne (Watership Sounds) βοΈEverything you'd expect from a long Eluvium piece. By far my favorite of Matthew Cooper's work is the rare CATALIN record , but in terms of sheer atmospheric weight and variety of textures, 2010's Static Nocturne is top-notch work.
