I sit down with creator Delvin “DeshowMercy” Young on episode 281! His journey begins leaving Dallas, TX at a young age settling in Memphis with his grandmother. After graduating from Raleigh-Egypt High School, Delvin moved to Hollywood, CA and was discovered by a movie director. He began acting and modeling and later suffered a severe injury that changed the trajectory of his life. Ali Manning is a food scientist, author, and the CEO/Founder of Umami Food Consulting, LLC. She is the creator of Food Science 4 Kids, a program that teaches grade-school children foodscience education and allows them to perform hands-on activities that enrich their daily lives. Ali is also the Program Consultant with Project Green Fork (a local restaurant sustainability program) within the Clean Memphis organization, which provides resources and support to help “food-prenuers” reduce waste in all areas of their operations.Ali recently premiered as a competitor on Netflix's latest show, Snack vs. Chef, and is a 2023 Comcast Rise grant recipient. She published her first children's book, "Can I Play with MyFood?" in February 2022, inspired by her sister Alexis who has Down’s Syndrome. Currently, she works as a programmer and Black Creators Forum Manager at Indie Memphis. She is passionate about intersectional feminist practices within the arts, making films more accessible to those not living in large filmmaking centers, and developing audiences with a thoughtful, community-centered approach.

The annual Southern Heritage Classic Cultural Celebration is amongst us and I thought it would be fitting to have the founder, Fred Jones Jr. sit down with me for a live podcast at the historic Cossitt Library. Growing up in the Cleaborn Homes housing community in the Memphis area, Fred attended Booker T. Washington High School active in baseball, basketball, track and band. A severe football injury derailed his hopes of receiving a scholarship to college which led him to taking on jobs such as caddying for the Memphis Country Club and working at a florist on Vance. Fred had a gift for numbers which led him to receiving a job in the auditing department at Union Planters Bank and where he began their management program ultimately receiving BBA from Memphis State in 1971. At this point Fred made a transition and started working for Issac Hayes with Stax Records handling his finances. Having discovered a knack for putting together entertainers with large audiences in the most attractive venues, he started working with a plethora of first class talent including The Isley Brothers, Prince, Bill Cosby, The Commodores, Stevie Wonder, Parliament-Funkadelic, Luther Vandross, LL Cool J, Count Basie, Tyler Perry, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, The O’Jays, Usher, and hundreds more. As a result, the Southern Heritage Classic began in 1990 in Memphis, TN with HBCU's TSU vs. JSU.
Fast forward to 2023, we are now entering the 34th Southern Heritage Classic Cultural Celebration with a new HBCU headliner, UAPB. Take a listen as Fred shares many stories throughout his journey which includes how the SHC came to fruition and his recollection when he received the news that JSU would no longer participate in the SHC. Fred and his team are laser focused on their strong commitment to continuing the traditional festivities in the Memphis community consisting of a parade, a fashion show, concerts, a golf tournament, tailgate parties, a coaches luncheon, a battle of the bands, and more. Memphis native Darryl Sanford has been playing music all of his life. From playing the drums at the age of two and later matriculating to the piano, Darryl developed an ear for music. Darryl teaches music theory and is also a member of the legendary Bar-Kays.
Darryl first started playing for churches as a teenager and has been playing for churches and choirs in the city of Memphis ever since. By the time he entered his twenties, he started breaking into secular music by playing for a jazz band and then eventually breaking off into the r&b and neo-soul scene in the city of Memphis and surrounding areas.
After playing for many of the artists and singers in the city, he started playing for more mainstream artists in jazz and r&b, such as Shalamar, Howard Hewitt, Euge Groove, Kim and Kayla Waters, Alexander O’neal, and would eventually become a member of the legendary funk group The Bar-Kays.
Darryl Sanford’s main motivation is to be a light and spread positivity through the power of music.

Dr. Bennett-Fairs is the second woman chosen to lead the only historically black college in Memphis, TN.Dr. Bennett-Fairs’ career spans 26 years in higher education. She is a trained vocalist and orator who has served as an associate professor and college administrator. However, her most cherished role is that of student advocate. Previously, Dr. Bennett-Fairs served as the Vice President for Student Affairs at Delta State University.A native of Lorain, Ohio, Dr. Bennett-Fairs began her postsecondary career at Kentucky State University as a non-tenure tract Instructor of Music. Dr. Bennett-Fairs’ career spanned 20 years at KSU where her final role was as the Vice President for Student Affairs.Dr. Bennett-Fairs is a HBUC alum of Fisk University where she sang and traveled worldwide with the esteemed Jubilee Singers. Christie Taylor was born in Washington D.C., and in the early 1970’s moved with family to West Tennessee. Her early years fostered in her a strong affinity for music performance and radio. Her love of “all things artsy” led to her pursuit of a Communication Degree with concentration in Radio, TV, and Film; and later graduated with a Bachelor in Drama TV and Film Performance from Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Her radio career can be traced to her hosting an evening show on KUTA, the university’s radio station. Throughout the years, Christie has worked for radio stations from Detroit to Memphis to Birmingham to St. Louis. Whether serving as a radio personality, a radio host for a monthly entertainment show; or hosting public affairs shows, Christie, has earned the credit of being an award-winning radio personality.Christie’s newfound love is Christie Taylor Consulting specializing in media and public speaking coaching. Cleveland, Ohio native, Jarrett Stephens, is the Athletic Director and the Men's Head Basketball Coach at Southwest TN Community College. Jarrett shares his story of often being the only black person growing up in the suburbs of Cleveland. His senior year he and his mom attended a HBCU College Fair where he was recruited on a choir and baseball scholarship to LeMoyne Owen College. Stephens shares that there was a culture shift he adjusted to when first arriving in Memphis. He spoke about the many relationships formed and bonds created with students, staff and fraternity brothers of Omega Psi Phi while receiving his HBCU experience. It was his senior year in college when Jarrett began his basketball coaching journey in the AAU arena. Next, he gained experience coaching in high school and college environments traveling from Atlanta, Memphis and eventually landed at Florida A&M University. Jarrett even served as NBA skills trainer with IMG Academy at one point. Fast forward to 2023 where Stephens is now leading the Saluqi men's basketball team as the Head Coach and Athletic Director. Jarrett breaks down the holistic culture he's instituted within his program based on academics, athletics, mental health, community service and social awareness. One of the biggest lessons he's learned is the delicate balance of walking in his purpose when it comes to family and coaching. Keenan Shotwell is a native Memphian and believes in the power of music to make people realize and celebrate all that they have in common with other people. He began playing music at a young age andpracticed music at the Jackson Studios during the early 90s. Keenan mastered the piano and organ while a student at the University of Memphis. As his skills grew and his talent flourished, he began making a name for himself as a captivating musician in his hometown. The music he creates does not stick to any one genre. Instead, he prefers to make songs that bridge the gap between different styles,making for a more enriching experience. He is a two-time winner of the “Verizon Wireless How Sweet the Sound” competition and has shared the stage with renowned artists such as Melba Moore, DeDe Bridgewater, Bebe Winans, Karen Clark Sheard, Oleta Adams, Tye Tribbett, and Kirk Whalum. Byhalia, MS native Tori Thompson is the Queen of Conversation and Host of Tea Time with Tori. Thompson has always had a love for writing, poetry and singing as she navigated through Southwind High School. She later matriculated to the University of Memphis as a Communications major where she began talk show Tea Time with Tori. Her show became a huge success with attendees discussing taboo topics not normally up for debate. Tori talks about why the show is now on pause finding time to regroup and reflect. We discuss the need for veterans in the media space to make room for new talent, some of the faux pas with new sponsors and how she is currently doing the inner work with self love. Kelvin "York" Brown is the owner and master trainer at IAmFitness Memphis LLC training center and the founder of non-profit Boyz To Men Strength Training and Mentoring Program. Kelvin has been in the fitness industry for over twenty years focusing on nutritional science. I was able to witness him in action at his boot camp session this past Saturday for an on location podcast. It was fascinating to see the connection he has with his clients consisting of women and men averaging ages 40 and up. Once the boot camp was complete, Kelvin sat down with me to discuss his journey.Kelvin moved to Memphis from New York to play basketball with Coach Johnson at LeMoyne Owen College in the mid 90's. He pledged Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. and became a huge presence on campus. Kelvin dives deep on the podcast sharing that he went into depression after he graduated college suffering from the loss of his mother. As a result, he attempted suicide and spent time in prison. These ultimate lows shaped Kelvin into the man he is today. He's extremely passionate about nutritional science and opened IAmFitness LLC training center. Kelvin's program focuses on managing exercise and nutrition. He does not want his clients to be dependent on prescribed medicine therefore he teaches the methods to live a healthy lifestyle. Kelvin and I also discussed the reason why he started his Boyz to Men Mentoring Program and the importance of these young men having a positive role model in their lives. We also talk about the Tyre Nichols death where this 29yr old young man was killed by black Memphis police officers. Marco Pavé has been nominated for a Grammy in the Best Contemporary Classical Composition Category for Requiem for the Enslaved which tells the story of 272 slaves sold to pay the debts of Georgetown University. Featuring hip-hop artist Marco Pavé, trumpeter Jared Bailey, and Simon on piano, Requiem for the Enslaved explores the sacred and historical, and honors the lives of those bought and sold. Marco Pavé is a Grammy Nominated, Hip-hop artist and Memphis-raised Muslim writer who uses hip hop culture as a means of personal expression and social empowerment. With a decade's worth of experience in the music industry under the name Marco Pavé, he’s released several EPs, an album, and wrote and staged an opera, Grc Lnd 2030. His writing and music has been featured on MTV News, NPR, and in the Oxford American. In 2015, Marco delivered an inspiring TEDx Talk on how the arts saved his life. During this talk he discussed how "cradle-to-career" arts policy that focuses on infrastructure to support artists can boost the local economy, address poverty by creating pathways to entrepreneurship, and consequently deter crime. As of today, Marco is currently hip-hop artist-in-residence at Georgetown University in Washington, DC.
Chasity Monroe, the owner of Pink Noire Beauty Supply and Cosmetics, one of the few Black-owned beauty supply stores in Memphis, Tennessee, hopes to reclaim the Black beauty industry through her corporate and consumer perspectives.Estimates from The Black Owned Beauty Supply Association (BOBSA) show the Black haircare and cosmetics industry is worth about $9 billion. However, less than 5% of the beauty supply stores in the United States are Black-owned, which presents Black shoppers with an issue; they purchase products from non-Black communities that do not understand Black hair.I met with Chasity for a live discussion at her Beauty Insiders event inside Pink Noire. We discussed how her corporate background at Procter & Gamble prepared her for this business venture in addition to the many allies she's made. Chasity has her sights set on expansion and product placement in the near future. I had the best time chopping it up with Illustrator/Designer Mia Saine. This Arlington, TN native's family purchased land and bartered with one another in the 90’s. Mia actually grew up in the midst of development in Arlington which welcomed new classes of people and many adjustments. She is the youngest of three siblings and was greatly influenced by her grandmother as a child that fostered her creativity. As a high school student, Mia was introduced to Graphic Media, Design and Screen Printing. She received a scholarship to attend Memphis College of Art where she excelled and began freelance work. In those early days Mia began working with clients such as New York Times, MLK50 and the singer Kirby working on branding. As she gained more clients, Mia's knowledge of negotiating and understanding contracts developed. She was able to help others in the art community in those areas during this Black Renaissance. Mia describes the Memphis art community as young, animated, innovative and energetic. As of today, Mia has signed with the Anna Goodson Agency from Quebec, Canada. This partnership is complimentary in the aspect of legal needs, advocacy and collaborations. Mia is adamant about keeping social issues at the forefront of her work using her art as a learning opportunity. Mia shares that during her Skittles collab she actually came out as a non-binary, black queer artist. She wants others to know that overcoming self-doubt is a game changer in any industry. Utilizing the power of social media as a canvas for your talent is extremely important. You can find Mia's Target Holiday Collection in stores right now. This project was special to Mia as she was able to showcase gratitude by highlighting black families and some of her favorite memories.
Singer/Songwriter, Stephani Doll McCoy, originally hails from North Memphis by way of Hollywood, Jackson and Frayser. Stephani's grandmother was instrumental in her start of learning all aspects of music at their church Greater Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in South Memphis. It was at Ridgeway High School where she met her sisters and began the singing group ADAJYO. At one point Stephani took the leap and moved to L.A. to pursue music full time. Her experience on the West Coast presented many challenges and successes in her career. She found her community of musicians and was able to create and collaborate with the likes of Raphael Sasdiq and many others. McCoy describes in detail her experience working with B.B. King Blues traveling the world on Holland American Cruise Lines performing six nights a week. You'll also discover her process of writing music which involves the craft of telling stories and being vulnerable. Although you can see Stephani on many stages throughout the city, her focus as of now is building a community by designing her very own platform via Doll's Playlist series. This concert event displays her original music where she has the space to learn and grow with her audience. During the "Aye Mane, Say Mane" segment, Doll gives us the turning point in her career where her mind frame began to shift on how she approaches creating shows. Blytheville, AR native Bria Jones has officially been a news reporter at WREG News Channel 3 for one year now. She moved to Memphis at the age of 7 and received her introduction into journalism at Cordova High School as a writer for their newspaper. Remember the "Teen Appeal" at the Commercial Appeal? Well Bria also was a part of that coveted team as well and always wanted to be the "Black Carrie Bradshaw" growing up. Bria attended St. John's University in New York where she interned for the Wendy Williams show in which she describes her experience in great detail. Take a listen as Bria describes her humble beginnings in news in Monroe, LA and later in Flint, MI. As a plus sized woman, Jones has received much criticism from news directors regarding her look. However, Bria never wavered in her plight to work in Memphis news. She gives flowers to some of the greats that have graced our Memphis televisions and set the foundation for Black, female news casters such as Mearl Purvis, Stephanie Scurlock and Claudia Barr. Bria is currently nominated for a Mid-South Emmy Award for her coverage on the Family Dollar rat infestation that temporarily shut down over 400 stores. In addition, you'll hear how Bria loves to wind down and enjoy this "re-birthing" of downtown Memphis and also how she like to indulge in self-care. Bria is extremely proud to represent for the plus sized women in media who often face challenges in a culture that thrives on vanity.
Southside Chicago native Ben Colar moved to the Bluff City in 2002 after to study graphic design at Memphis College of Art. He had only heard about the Convocation and Three 6 Mafia prior to moving to Memphis. Ben excelled during his time at MCA and was immediately baptized by the fire working at an ad agency the summer before graduation. After commencement, he moved to Philly and became engulfed with freelance work. Ben made his way back to Memphis and started his brand design firm Baby Grand in 2018 in addition to a craft cocktail bar Inkwell in 2022. He noticed the craft cocktail space, worth around $86M and expected to hit $1B by 2026, was dominated by white males. After frequenting many cocktails bars in the city, Ben would often receive sub par service. He created the "Inkwell" concept from the idea that you will need to "refill" once the ink runs dry. His space gives you a break from the club scene with very few distractions and plenty of communication. Colar always leads with the mission of fully representing the make-up of Memphis and giving back in various ways. Whitehaven, TN native, Nathan Ollie, is a financial advisor, nonprofit leader, tech entrepreneur and girl dad.In 2007, Nate graduated from Whitehaven High School, where he excelled both academically in the top 10% of his class; and athletically being awarded local honors in basketball. Nate went on to continue his post-secondary academic and athletic journey at Rhodes College. It was there where Nate joined Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., a moment he considers a huge milestone in his life. Nate eventually graduated from the University of Memphis, earning a Bachelor’s Degree with a focus in Corporate Finance. Since entering the workforce, Nate has gained valuable experience in many different industries and niches in places across the globe. Over the years, however, he realized that one of his top skillsets lied in helping people solve problems. She has a Master of Public Health from The University of Memphis and a Bachelors of Science in Exercise Physiology from the University of Miami. Rodan, also known as Daniel Ross, is a Memphis-based artist that focuses on telling the story of the Black American journey through art. He was educated at Tennessee State University and Memphis College of Art. Over the years he has perfected the use of hard to soft graphite and clay on cold press board, striving to make his work appear photo realistic. Through a technique he calls “loose realism”, Rodan exhibits control but not controlled paintings that will never let us forget the contributions of those who have paved the way for us in civil rights, music, literature and culture. Westwood, TN native Sedrick Askew is the founder of Impact Lyfe Media. Attending one of the prominent high schools by the name of Westwood High, he knew early on that media was his calling by having a camera placed in his hand as early as 13. After graduating in 2004 and attending University of Memphis, media took a major role in his life by filming multiple shows hosted by the school as well as the school's many organizations. During his time at UofM he found a new love and profession of Photography as he earned his BA degree and Masters in Special Education. After graduating he became a SPED teacher for Memphis City Schools, after 3 years in the profession he took a major leap of faith by becoming a business owner, which goes by the name Impact Lyfe Media.

His father, mother and uncle exposed him to a plethora of music at a very young age taking him to jazz concerts in addition to Prince, Rick James and Parliament shows. North Memphis native, Shahidah Jones is my guest for Ep 221 of the Verbally Effective Podcast. Shay comes from a huge family consisting of Smokey City, Hurt Village, New Chicago and more. Half of her family is of the Islam faith which is the cornerstone of her organizing efforts. She tells us of her time at Austin Peay University where she encountered much adversity while earning her degree. Upon graduation, Shay shares her journey which encompasses working as a waitress at Ebony and Lace which deeply humanized her. She later worked her way through call centers and entered the corporate world working in Marketing at FedEx. Shay felt that the titles and money was not fulfilling her purpose. When she entered her 40’s life changed and she started paying attention to some of the grass roots organizations and started doing work in the community. However, it was the death of Darrius Stewart that totally changed the trajectory of her organizing and activist work. He later started his media company Spotlight Productions which is still flourishing after twenty two years and has picked up three Emmy Awards and a plethora of Telly Awards. Attorney Janika White is in the midst of campaign season up for the imperative role of Shelby County District Attorney. Her current situation is filled with a plethora of meetings while staying on path of an intentional journey. Janika's hometown in Memphis is rather debatable being that she lived a street over from Crystal Palace skating rink. Some would say that is South Memphis, White Haven or even Westwood adjacent. Being the only girl in the family, Janika grew up surrounded with the greatest gift of all which is the knowledge of God. Her love for law started very early as she participated in mock trial at Central High School and even interned for a law firm in the eleventh grade. Upon transitioning back to Memphis from law school, Janika was extremely excited to get to work and help the Memphis community.

White Haven, TN native, Dr. Tavis Wade-Jones, joins me for Ep 200 of the Verbally Effective Podcast. Being number twelve of thirteen siblings, Tavis grew up in very big, loving family. I'm sure it wouldn't surprise you to know that she was voted "Most Popular" and "Wittiest" at White Haven High School. Tavis began her college journey at Fisk University and later finished at THEE LeMoyne-Owen College pledging Delta Sigma Theta, Alpha Upsilon Chapter. As a first-generation college graduate, Tavis made it a priority to excel in academia by attaining her Masters and Doctorate in Education. Tavis is also a founding member of Modern Distinctive Ladies, Inc. which began with seven young ladies in 1988. Now in it's 34th year, Tavis has touched over 6,000 girls as the Executive Director. Ernest D. Strickland, President and CEO of the Black Business Association of Memphis, holds an MBA from Bethel University and Bachelor of Professional Studies from University of Memphis. Strickland has led a multitude of successful economic and workforce development projects throughout his career. Most recently, he served as architect of Memphis’ community-wide workforce development initiative, Upskill 901 – a program aimed at upskilling 10,000 individuals over a three-year timeframe.

Nikki Barnes, known in the entertainment industry as Ooowee Nikki B, is a Memphis event planner and promoter. This South Memphis native is a graduate of University of Memphis where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Hospitality & Resort Management.
Nikki B began here promotional career in high school while being a part of the Hottest No ID Required promoter, Shunn Gunn’s street team. While later joining her God brother, G. Webb to begin throwing their own events and bringing artists such as Nicki Minaj.
From there, Nikki ventured off to forming a connection with Thomas Brownlee becoming a member of BBEMG marketing group where she helped host some of the most popular parties such as, Mynt Night Club, Sunset Day Party, All Black Day Party, Denim & White Affair. After being in supporting roles, Nikki was finally ready to put her own ideas out for the world to see and make a real name for herself with events such as Trap Gala, Drunken Karaoke, Super Saturdays and Reflex Sundays.

Hailing from North Memphis, Jus Bentley is maximizing her craft. I first met Jus Bentley at Dream Fest showcase over ten years ago and I am so proud on the artist that she has grown into. She starts the pod sharing the legacy of her family's gas stations, King Grocery, which is a staple throughout the city of Memphis. Although Bentley went to three high schools (Cordova, Germantown and Bartlett) due to zoning, she says that Cordova was her absolute fav. Trinica Goods is a professional dancer born and raised in Memphis, Tn. Since she was a young girl she always had a strong passion for dance. Trinica began her dance training at the age of 11 at Colonial Middle School. She attended multiple performing arts school(s) for the next four years. After graduating high school, she went on to continue her dance training at The University of Memphis. There at The University of Memphis, she was trained intensively in modern, contemporary, and ballet. In May of 2015, she received her BFA in Dance.
During her time in college, Trinica began her professional career as an NBA Dancer. She completed her time with the The Memphis Grizzlies after her 5th season. She also began training under professional dancer/ choreographer Brandee Evans. This is where she learned the proper technique of dancing in heels. This led to Trinica creating “The Goods Experience” which is a series of dance classes created for the everyday woman, to help find her sexy while dancing in heels.
Just recently, Trinica resigned teaching dance at Overton High School. She has moved to Atlanta to become a student once again in the dance field. T Goods says "I want to eat again" and is highly motivated to tour and compete.

Robinson launched an aggressive campaign for office, ultimately unseating a 12-year incumbent in a 2 to 1 victory. Sen. Robinson is Founder and CEO of The Healthcare Institute Inc. - one of Memphis’ leading postsecondary healthcare career colleges and training consulting company. She immediately changed here major from physical therapy to design and received her first design job offer a semester before graduation. Growing up in South Memphis at College and McClemore, James Alexander was a music legend in the making. Just a stone's throw away from Stax Records, James played football and was a part of a band while attending Booker T. Washington High School. Immediately after graduating high school, he was on a plane with his bandmates headed to New York City to play his very first gig at the Apollo Theatre with Otis Redding. James gives us quite a few stories entering the music business with the Bar-Kays at such a young age including comradery amongst musicians and even racism during those early years. He even shares that tragic moment when he flew commercial for a gig while his entire band in addition to Otis Redding were killed on a private plane. It all started on Chelsea and Lambert growing up in a huge, loving blended family. Laquita became a teen mother at the age of seventeen following in the footsteps of both her mother and grandmother. However, Laquita worked extremely hard to dispel statistics by graduating from college, receiving her doctorate in education and pledging Delta Sigma Theta while attending University of Memphis. That's where DeAndre's trouble with the law began and ultimately led him into 25 months in state and federal prison. Growing up in Cherokee Heights as an only child, Rachel Knox has always had a love for the arts. It was no surprise she thrived in theatre arts while attending Houston High School and later majored in Fine Arts with a concentration in Costume Design and Technology at the University of Memphis. Upon graduation, Rachel accepted a role with Arena Stage in DC where she mastered the craft of the creative effects of audience strategy. A year later, she moved back to Memphis as the Manager of Teacher Professional Development and Community Partnerships at the Orpheum Theatre. Rachel currently serves as the Program Officer for the Thriving Arts and Culture and Engaged Leadership and Civic Pride portfolios at Hyde Family Foundation where she manages approximately $2.2M/year in grants to area non-profits. In addition, Rachel is the Board President of the CLTV (Collective) a non-profit Black cultural organization.
On this episode, Rachel expresses her passion for using culture creatives as a springboard to invest in black communities. She also addresses the inequities our artists face as it relates to paying artists their worth. Now that we are in a global pandemic, it is definitely time to respect the labor that goes into the work creatives do. East St. Louis, IL native Cory Sparks has built a well-respected name among media and entertainment influencers over the past twenty years. Originally from Fairfax, VA, essayist and memoirist Leta McCollough Seletzky is deeply rooted in Memphis, TN. At the tender age of three she moved to the city known as the home of the blues with her mom who worked as a reporter for the Commercial Appeal. After graduating from Craigmont High School, Leta ventured off to college as Political Science and French major at Northwestern University. She later entered into law school in Washington DC and suddenly felt the need to tell her father's story. This precious memoir took a few years to begin as Leta's life was uprooted due to her husband's job moving the entire family overseas to Central Asia in Kazakhstan. Her international travels did not end there with the next move being in Nigeria which is the sovereign country located in West Africa. The year was 2014 that brought about a major plot twist for Leta's life as she and her family was nestling into their new world in Lagos. The Ebola outbreak struck which caused Leta to uproot yet again and move to the states in Lake Tahoe, NV. Despite the emotional and psychological challenges this caused, Leta enrolled into a creative writing class and started producing pieces that were published in a plethora of notable publications such as O, The Oprah Magazine, The New York Times and The Atlantic just to name a few. In this podcast, you will discover how Leta was finally able to begin writing the story of her father that tells the story behind his involvement in the CIA and why he is pictured in a famous photo at the time of Dr. Martin Luther King's assassination. South Memphis native Crystal Mercedes has been making waves since hitting the DJ scene in 2008. Although her aunt and uncle were djs, playing the baritone at Colonial Middle School and being on the Color Guard at Overton High School was where her love and understanding for music began to broaden. She entered UT Chattanooga as a Communications major and started djing in August of 2008. Crystal admits it was a rough start but later discovered she did not have be in the clubs to dj. She was booked for many corporate and school events, which became her practice ground. After graduation, Crystal pursued her MBA in marketing in Atlanta while working two interns; one being in the fashion industry. Her transition back to Memphis was faced with quite a few challenges trying to enter into both the media and dj world. What you will learn from this podcast is that Crystal never compromised her originality by conforming. She learned very early how to say "NO" and took huge risks in doing so. She fully believes that women djs deserves to be in the forefront and works hard to continue flourishing as the "The Runway DJ."

My guest for episode 114 is Dr. Stacy L. Spencer, Senior Pastor of New Direction Christian Church in Memphis, Tennessee, a multi-site congregation with church plants in Collierville, TN, and Idutywa, South Africa.

West Kentucky University was where he later attended college as a broadcast major pledging Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. It was his junior year when he received his calling from God. After graduation, he attended seminary school and later moved to Memphis, TN as a youth pastor with Mississippi Blvd Church. In 2001, Dr. Spencer stepped out on faith and began a radical church by the name of New Direction Christian Church that has grown rapidly going from 60 to 10,000 members in 10 years. Although those numbers have astronomically grown since then, Dr. Spencer has laid a fruitful foundation in the Hickory Hill area with Power Center CDC. This multi-million-dollar community model includes a middle school, performing arts center, wellness center, retail spaces and housing.
As we settle into a new normal with the ongoing threat of the coronavirus, Dr. Spencer shares his thoughts on how this virus relates to the Bible referencing Psalms 21 and a few others. He echoes the fact that God is getting our attention as we undergo a mass healing of sorts via self-quarantine. Dr. Spencer reminds us of the importance of Faith during these days. Born to sharecroppers in Batesville, MS, my radio colleague Bobby O'Jay walks us through his 47 years in the radio industry. After seeing his cousin Melvin Jones come home in a fancy ride in 1965 after sharing he was on the radio, Bobby immediately began practicing his radio voice. His first chance was presented in 1972 at the age of 18 when he received a phone call for his first gig in Montgomery, AL. From that moment, Bobby's voice was heard in numerous markets such as Milwaukee, Houston, Dallas, Chicago and most currently Memphis. He tells plenty of stories of his experiences in those cities including encounters with colorful decision makers, being hired and fired, and ultimately making a plethora of good and bad decisions. One of the most pivotal moments Mr. O'Jay shared was when he finally landed in Memphis at WDIA and made the choice to enter a 30 day program at St. Joseph's for rehab in 1985. He never used drugs or drank since. He's received countless accolades over the years for his contribution to the radio industry and states that many of his opportunities were a "Calling from God." Bobby also shares the devastation of losing his wife Sharon and the advice she gave him before transitioning in regards to dating. What I found very intriguing about Bobby is that he maintains his great health mainly due to a very special plant based diet that he practices religiously. Bobby also offers advice to those interested in the radio business and where he sees his career going forward. Enjoy.

In 2000, she was crowned Miss LeMoyne-Owen College and graduated cum laude with a degree in Business Administration the following year.

Brandon Adams aka DJ B.A. #nogenre has become one of Memphis’ most respected turntablist in the city. Born in Raleigh NC and raised in Youngsville NC, the United States Navy brought Brandon to Memphis by way of Millington on his 5th deployment two years ago. He began djing in 2010 while stationed in Jacksonville, FL and quickly put those controllers to use. After receiving orders overseas in late 2010, he found his way forward being immersed in a melting pot of cultures in Manama Bahrain. It was here where DJ B.A. was exposed to the international music scene and became a staple in Bahrain's nightlife. Whitehaven native, Milton Howery III a.k.a. Milton Memphis, has spent the last 13 years working in the entertainment and tourism industry. Milton began his career in 2005 working in radio as the morning show producer for the Mike and Mandy Morning Show on WRVR The River 104.5FM and hosted a weekly show on U92-FM "The Jazz Lover." After graduating from two separate colleges on the same weekend in 2011, Milton was named the Top Marketing Representative intern with Black Entertainment Television. Immediately following he landed roles with the Memphis Cook Convention Center and later with the Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid.
With such a solid foundation in entertainment and tourism, it was no surprise when Milton founded Milton Memphis Entertainment (MME), a business that is now focused on connecting people from music-related events to the extremely popular networking event The Link Up Memphis. He was recently named one of the Top 40 Under 40 Professionals by the Memphis Business Journal in 2019.

Ever since a young girl, Carlissa Shaw always knew she would become a lawyer. With North Memphis running through her veins, Carlissa's family supported her wholeheartedly with this end goal in mind. After completing Snowden, she entered Central High School and was very active in sports and student activities. However, it was her love for track that led her to MTSU as an athlete and political science major with a concentration in Pre-Law. Upon graduation, Carlissa returned home and attended the University of Memphis, Cecil C. Humphrey Law School where she graduated in 2012. She has worked in a variety of practices including non-profit, trial law and the county government. Carlissa has always been an advocate for empowering people hence her very first book entitled "Twenty Something: Lessons, Reflections, and Survival Tips for Your 20's and Beyond." On episode 94, you will find out the motivation behind Carlissa’s book including some additional lessons she has learned along the way. I often boast about this podcast having the secret ingredient of transparency and my Pisces brother Sammie fit right in. He first gained notoriety around the turn of the century with Gold certified top 25 Billboard Hot 100 hit "I Like It." Back on the scene with his fourth studio album Everlasting, Sammie says it hasn't always been easy going from teen star to adult. Native Memphian, Lawrence "Boo" Mitchell, was surrounded by music growing up in South Memphis. Boo is the son of legendary Hi Records and Al Green producer, Willie Mitchell. He quickly transitioned into filming music videos for some of your favorite hip hop artists such as Drake, 21 Savage, Offset, etc. And it doesn't stop at music videos. He's currently writing scripts and creating dialogues for some future flicks you'll be seeing on the big screen soon. Singer, songwriter and overall entertainer Jalyn Danae grew up in Union City, TN. At the age of 11, Jalyn moved to the music mecca known as Memphis. Jalyn picked up an interest in arts at 15. She enrolled into homeschool and focused her spare time on learning and developing her passions. Jalyn studied literature, traditional arts, digital arts, learned to play guitar and to write her own music in an effort to expand her artistic horizons. With the guidance of her management, Jalyn is busy creating a footprint with radio in addition to performing at local venues and working on her EP. While they continue to craft an amazing body of work, Jalyn's debut single "Can't Say No" from her debut EP has been making a big splash on the airwaves and in the digital stream. Tailoring is an art that my guest for episode 51 began studying at the age of 13. Some of you may have seen some of Fresh's early designs back in the day at the BSA's fashion show at University of Memphis. Although he attended college to study architecture, Fresh dropped out because the fashion world kept calling his name. That's when he started tailoring for dry cleaners and held odd jobs to stay afloat. Shortly after, he opened his very own cleaners and tailor shop on S. Main. Fresh soon discovered that personal custom tailoring was more effective. He would later move to both the east and west coasts undergoing priceless lessons in fashion and business. Lesson after lesson he began to crack the code. Just less than a year ago he was homeless and today he is designing your favorite celebrities. Fresh is in full Zen with the universe these days releasing exclusive drops of his "RICHFRESH" luxury brand every Monday throughout the year starting today. Held at my alma mater, Lemoyne Owen College, I had 6 dynamic panelists in the areas of activism, music and collegiate royalty. Topics on the agenda included social media, voting and music. Mickell is the newly elected Shelby County Commissioner for District 8 in Memphis. He discusses his role and how he plans to make an impact. Fully decorated with numerous accolades throughout his career, Mickell breaks down the referendums on the table for the upcoming election and stresses the need to vote on November 6.
Atlanta native Cynthia Daniels has leveled up the event planning world in the city of Memphis. Although she’s only been here for less than a decade, her impact is explosive. You may have been to one of her signature events such as Memphis Black Restaurant Week, Top 40 Under 40 Urban Elite Professionals, Level Up Conference, Black Christmas Expo or Black Bridal Expo. She has built an empire of opportunities under Cynthia Daniels & Co. to make an economic influence this city has not seen in a long time. As you will hear on episode 40, Cynthia truly believes that black excellence should be celebrated in a city comprised of majority African Americans. You will also notice that I wanted to dig a little deeper into what shaped this powerful woman. This podcast is full of fun facts about Cynthia’s upbringing in Atlanta, her academic experience at Alabama A&M University, pledging Delta Sigma Theta, her short-lived music career and the reasons behind her pivotal transition to Memphis, TN. We even delve into her dating life or lack thereof at the moment. Notice I said at the moment. If you know Cynthia or even follow her on social media, you know that she is a hip hop head, specifically 90’s genre. I even attempted to quiz her on some Old School Hip Hop to no avail. The life of a woman is filled with a never ending balancing act. Giving everyone and everything an equal amount of time is impossible! At the end of the day, prioritization is key to keeping our sanity. My guest for episode 39, Jerica Phillips, shares how she accomplishes this very thing while recognized as a leading journalist on WMC Action News 5. Jerica and Ena cover a wide range of topics including some very personal chapters never publicly exposed. From growing up in the church to becoming a mother at a very young age, Jerica beat the odds at every level both personally and professionally. This UT Knox Alum also touches on her work with Black Girls Code, Project Homeless Connect and the Code Crew Community. We even had time to share a few words regarding Kanye West recently attending the White House in addition to rapper Fabolous being indicted on domestic abuse charges. Towards the end of the podcast, Jerica shares how she was finally comfortable after one year that her youngest child Jewel was diagnosed with Down Syndrome. Jewel’s journey is one that you definitely need to hear as you discover the innocence and endless possibilities of her life.
Media insiders are fully aware of the challenges faced with the sense of urgency placed upon having the most up to date news at any given second. Today there are so many platforms to rely on to seek information. My guest for episode 38, Jessica Gertler, has witnessed the evolution of TV news as it engages in a delicate dance with social media. Being a California native, Jessica has adapted well to the southern comforts of Tennessee. This UT Knoxville alum has fully embraced Memphis as a proud citizen and as a reporter on WREG news. We discuss quite a few stories she’s covered that were unforgettable in addition being more health conscious and her many “Dog Mom” adventures. The episode closes with Ena and Jessica playing a game entitled “Real News vs. Fake News” examining headlines from Memphis, pop culture and politics.
Being an entrepreneur has its rewards. But when you're able to invest in your community and create opportunities for the disenfranchised, the rewards are more fruitful. Orange Mound native, Kelvin Woods, is my guest for episode 37. He is the founder and co-owner of The Tee Shirt Lab, a screen-printing and apparel decoration company. Kelvin walks us through growing up attending Overton High School and having a gift for the arts. He attended UT Chattanooga and caught the entrepreneur bug very early in college. Upon graduation, he worked in corporate america but soon walked away after acquiring equipment to start a t shirt company at the age of 24. He's been excelling ever since opening locations in Nashville, Memphis and currently exploring other markets to penetrate. Kelvin is a family man and Christian who keeps his eyes on the prize. Take a listen as Kelvin talks about some of struggles and successes he's encountered as a minority business owner, his creation of Black Art*ish and sitting on the Board of Directors for Juice Orange Mound Project.
Sociology is the study of development, structure and functioning of human society. My guest for episode 36, Wendy Marie, holds a SOCY PhD and is currently an Assistant Professor at her alma mater University of Memphis. Although she eventually worked her way into this position, the road was filled with many peaks and valleys. At four months, Wendy was adopted by a white working class couple and raised in Memphis, TN. Her story begins with identifying the obvious differences both internally and externally. Upon graduating UofM, Wendy worked as a case manager and transitioned into the world of nightlife as a VIP hostess. It was here at the nightclub where she discovered people were using this social space to create and maintain identity. In 2012, she began her graduate studies at the University of Maryland. Her dissertation examined the effects of ideologies about race, family, and national belonging on Korean adoptee's identity formation. Wendy is very active in the Korean adoptee community where in Memphis the Asian American population is only 1%. In addition, my soror is a published author and has a blog discussing two of her favorite things: eats and reads.
After meeting my guests for episode 35, The Dudley Boys (Mario and Carlos), I soon discovered that the art of "checking" is a sport. You may have seen them come down your Instagram timeline with a two sided screen displaying their victim of choice on one side and them ruthlessly lashing out checks on the other side in a video. We laugh and joke because this art form is amusing especially if you are not the person being targeted. In addition, what makes this comedy duo different is that one member has a disability that he utilizes as his super power. Their chemistry is amazing. This is comedy in its purest form. But what I learned from the Dudley Boys is that this skill is very lucrative and can also be a gift and a curse. Their inboxes are often flooded with requests as a result of this newfound fame. Music is a way of life for my guest for episode 34 Tonya Dyson. This singer/songwriter is the founder of NeoSoulVille which is a Memphis lifestyle marketing and event production firm that caters to the “soulful” side of life. Take a listen as Tonya gives us a rich lesson in music history with the birth of Stax Records and Hi Records. As many of you know, the recording industry is filled with numerous stories of talented artists having to navigate their way through unmerited contracts. Much has changed since then however Ena and Tonya discuss many parallels that are still seen today in the music business from generating multiple streams of income to cultivating an acceptance for original music. Tonya also describes the significance of her recent trip to Cuba and how when she returned home she was robbed blind. As a result, she is now a resident at the South Main ArtSpace Lofts which is home to creatives of all disciplines to live and work.

DeVonte Payton wears the "M" proudly as he advocates for engagement and development in the community involving schools, families, nonprofits, and private sector. As you take a listen to his journey you'll find that the road hasn't always been easy. While many of us were enjoying our college years in our late teens, DeVonte was shaping his work ethic and starting a family. This UofM graduate walks us through his passion for education, career changes, unemployment, "downtown living" and his love for craft beer. He also has a major announcement to share with everyone regarding his next move with charter schools.
Cultured can be defined as being refined, educated and polished. My guest for episode 32, Rhobb Hunter Jr., definitely fits into those categories. He's lived in multiple cities and countries throughout the world and is part owner of Robusto by Havana Mix cigar lounge in the heart of downtown Memphis. You many have seen him on the reality show “Bar Rescue” that offers professional expertise and renovations to businesses. Also, discover how he moved to Memphis to assist his father Rhobb Sr. in penetrating the $20 billion cigar industry. Of that $20B, African Americans only capture 2%. As a result, there are huge plans underway to grow the business. Take a listen as he enlightens us on tales from the Far East, side effects of the cigar industry and their upcoming cigar festival.
Many of you may know my guest for episode 31 for his contributions with the Memphis music scene and the Shelby County school system. However, Peppa's story begins growing up in the South Memphis community. As a graduate of White Station High School he was introduced to the music business early on by DJ Paul. This relationship flourished into artist management and Peppa becoming the Vice President of Def Jam South and being very instrumental in Yo Gotti's career. Take a listen as Peppa gives the raw and uncut stories of Memphis artists breaking into the business and how he continuously reinvents himself within the industry. As of today, Peppa has found a bigger purpose which is philanthropy. He walks us through how he developed the billboard campaign for Shelby County Schools in addition to improving school registration through his community engagement projects. Although Peppa is heavily involved with the school system, his love for music has not wavered. On Sept 2nd, Peppa is presenting the Memphis Legends Rap Concert featuring some of your favorites such as Tommy Wright III, Skinny Pimp, Gangsta Blac, Gangsta Boo, Playa Fly, La Chat, Al Kapone, DJ Squeaky, DJ Zirk, Criminal Mane, SMK and Gangsta Pat. Only Peppa could pull something off of this magnitude.
Nothing but good vibes ever since I met my soror Tiffany Dotson. And if you know her, you would know that she is one of Lil Wayne's biggest fans. He actually inspired her to get 26 tattoos. Her love of art has a story behind it. And her love for music goes even deeper. Tiffany is one of the few award winning female promoters in the city of Memphis. Although this is a male dominated industry, TDOT has excelled with flying colors. Her artist showcase series entitled "Speakerboxx" has featured many talented artists from the city and is now currently "on road." Take a listen to episode 30 as Tiffany walks us through growing up in Germantown, being a classically trained pianist, college life, being an educator and lastly her love for the music business.
The law can be interpreted in so many ways. It seems as though the world we live in today forces us to understand and sometimes challenge the law as it stands. In episode 29, Ena sits down with her soror Victoria Young who is currently approaching her last year of law school at University of TN College of Law. They discuss her road to law school as a native Memphian in addition to various projects she has in the works. She is about to open Spincult in the heart of the Medical District on August 25 which is an indoor cycling studio. In addition, she will host the first edition of Le Dîner en Blanc Memphis on next Saturday, August 4, 2018 for over 1000 guests. As you listen to this epidsode you will see how Victoria has made it a priority to promote the culture and rich soulful history of the city.
East St. Louis native, El Mac, lightens up episode 28 with an array of topics. He begins with his start at Memphis State University as a marketing/journalism student who was pledged into Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity as a freshman. At this time in life social media was at its beginning stages and El was an eager participant. Hence, El's daily "HOT TOPIC" on facebook. He talks us through how he develops the topics and some very entertaining stories from going viral.
Many are called but few are chosen. I've been seeing the term "BOSS" thrown around lately as if this is something easy. In episode 27, you get a chance to meet a real boss who wears many hats. One Love Theo is an international independent artist from Trelawny, Jamaica specializing in reggae/dancehall music. Theo moved to the states at the tender age of eleven and began his musical journey. Although he's lived in quite a few states, he calls Memphis,TN home. In episode 26, Theo discusses growing up in Jamaica, his transition as an immigrant to the US and being accepted as a reggae/dancehall artist in this fickle music business. In addition, he talks about his passion for fast cars which birthed his very own car club called the "Memphis Head Turners."
There are numerous variables that go into blogging. I didn't realize this until I met lifestyle blogger and visual content creator Kim Thomas. Although the blogging community in Memphis is currently in its growth stage, the opportunities are endless. Kim walks us through the many components that make up a successful blog which doesn't always mean thousands of followers on social media. Engagement is key! It takes hard work and dedication in which Kim provides workshops helping other bloggers monetize their craft. In episode 25 Kim and I discuss her life before blogging, the transition process, the blogging community and her many projects designed to assist and inspire other bloggers.
Police brutality is a hot topic amongst our community. But do we ever really get a chance to hear the perspective from an actual law enforcement officer? In episode 24, Ena sits down with law enforcemenet detective Hayward Anderson to discuss police brutality, the opioid crisis and how social media can lead to solving numerous crimes.
In episode 22, Ena sits down with entrepreneur and fellow podcaster Memphis Meeks. You may have seen his t-shirt line with the words “I’M ROOTING FOR EVERYBODY FROM MEMPHIS” on the front. Not only is Meeks busy with his clothing business but he is also one of the busiest promoters in Memphis. You can find him marketing some of the biggest events in the city on any given day. However, one of the most intriguing pieces to this man was his military background serving in Iraq. Meeks is a huge Kanye West fan therefore he and Ena pick a part the new “Ye” album.
