Inkstuds is CiTR's answer to the wonderful world of comix. Hosted by Robin McConnell and rotating cast of sidekicks, Inkstuds explores the underbelly of the comic world, interviewing some of todays top creators. Inkstuds focuses on underground and indy comix from publishers like Fantagraphics, Top Shelf, Drawn & Quarterly and more. Each week, we interview a different creator to get their unique perspective on comix and to discuss their own work. No creator too big or too small to be interviewed. The talent interviewed ranges from the legends of alternative comix to some kid who has only put out a couple of minis, all with something new and interesting to share with the reading public.

David Heatley is the imaginative man behind the self published series Deadpan. His work is a nice mix of revealing autobiographix and surrealist dream comix.
Johnny has to be the funniest creator in comix. His stuff is so offensive on all sorts of levels, that I can barely stop laughing to be able to read more. It was a fun interview, and he is a pretty interesting guy. If you haven't read Angry Youth Comix, you should start soon.
Farel joined us today to talk about Popgun War, comix, Meathaus and more. Farel will be coming vancouver for the Comix and Stories convention at Heritage Hall on August 26th.
Kim Deitch is one of the most important creators in comix today. He has been craft marvelous work for the last 40 years, and shows no sign of slowing down, only getting better.
Jim is an awesome artist that has been doing some great stuff for Fantagraphics. His latest book is called Beasts and Priests is a collection of his portrait work that is sure to please the most discriminating eye.
Joe Chiappetta joined us to talk about his comic, Silly Daddy. Here is how he describes his comix - My life is an action-packed adventure as a Christian husband, father of three and a cartoonist. Imagine Van Gogh with a wife and kids today. Or cross Peanuts with the movie Nacho Libre. That's Silly Daddy, the Xeric Award winning comic, established 1991. Parenting has never been more profound, silly or profoundly silly.
It was a fun chat, Joe has been doing comix for many years and is currently celebrating Silly Daddy's sweet 16 birthday.
Fresh on tour for his latest album, Your Mom's Favorite DJ, Kid Koala joined me to talk about comix. He did a great graphic novel called Nufonia Must Fall. He was awesome to talk to and I am looking forward to his next book. Take a listen to hear what he has to say about it.
This week I played an interview I conducted a couple of weeks ago, with Dr. Daniel Wilson, about his latest book, Where's My Jetpack. Daniel is a really smart interesting engaging guy, and superfun to interview. This is probably the geekiest interview I have done, but thats ok.
Luke Ramsey and Jim Stoten joined us to talk about comix art and fun. Jim is a cartoonist from England that has come to town to partake in Luke's artist residency project on Pender Island. They are both super talented artist and are doing some really nice looking work.
Barron Storey is one of the most influential people that I have had the pleasure to talk to. He has been teaching for many years, and counts some of the top creators in comix as former pupils. Those that have had the fortune of being students of Barron, include, Kent Williams, George Pratt, Peter Kuper, Seth Tobocman, Daniel Clowes and many more. His new book, Life After Black, is a reproduction of one of his incredible personal journals. It is an incredible testament to his talent, and well worth checking out.
John Porcellino has been putting together King Cat Comics for the last 18 years. His latest book, King Cat Classix, is a massive tome of awesomeness, collecting the best of from the first 50 issues.
During his world wide tour, Scott McCloud joined us to discuss his books, comix and more. Scott is one of the smartest guys in comix, and is really pushing it forward as a critical media that merits discussion as an artform.
We were lucky enough to be able to meet up with Ron while he was in town with his band, Lavender Diamond. Ron is the guy behind some really interesting inovative comix. Some titles that you should check out are, Yeast Hoist, Awake Field and Skeeber Bee-Bye.
Melinda is the talented lady behind the artwork in Lost Girls. Lost Girls is an epic journey of smutty goodness involving Alice from Alice in wonderland, Wendy from Peter Pan and Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. They all meet in a hotel in Austria, right before the breakout of the first world war. The 3 ladies of different ages, find comfort in each other, and what follows is nearly 300 pages of beautifully drawn, poetic fantasy. As well as Lost Girls, Melinda was also involded in the underground comix scene in San Francisco in the 1970's.
Gary Groth and Kim Thompson are the guys that brought us the Comics Journal and Fantagraphics. Together, they have injected a critical attitude towards the wonderful world of comix, pushing it forward as an artform. Fantagraphics has published some of the best in alternative comix and continues to be a very important publisher.
Ed Piskor is a new guy on the scene, making some awesome comix. He is currently collaborating with Harvey Pekar on a couple of projects. As well, Ed makes some great mini's.
This week, we were joined by comix superstar Tim Sale. Tim has been a recognizable talent in comix for the last 18 years. From his humble beginnings on Grendel, to his ground breaking run on Batman with frequent collaborator Jeph Loeb, to his current work behind the scenes in the popular TV show, Heroes, Tim has continued to excel in his craft. I have been a big fan for years and am always more than happy to see some new stuff by him.
Today I was played an interview I did with Marc Bell, Owen Plummer, Jason Mclean, and Mark Delong about Nog A Dod, and the fine world of psychedoolia. It was recorded at Vancouvers lovely Ovaltine, right in the heart of the ghetto.

Mark was kind enough to join us for a chat about their books, vision, and future. This weeks guest is Al Columbia. Al is the mastermind behind Biologic Show, Doghead, Orange Sunshine, Pim and Francie and much much more. Ellen is the very talented artist behind one of my favorite collection of 2006, I Love Led Zeppelin. Its a collection of fun filthy collaborations and how to manuals for the subversive.
This weeks creative guest was Liz Prince. She does some fantastic slice of life autobio comix. Her work is for the most part short gag strips, that are so cute, they are written with a unicorns horn.
Gabrielle Bell is one of my favorite cartoonist out there right now. She does some excellent slice of life autobio work, and is developing into in my personal opinion being one of the more important modern creators. Check out her collection Lucky, from Drawn & Quarterly as well as short stories in the anthology Mome from Fantagraphics.
To celebrate International Womens Day, the Inkstuds were joined by creator, Roberta Gregory. She is one of the most important women in the creative comix sphere. Her legendary series, Naughty Bits, was a great example of an artist being able to do a series that is true to her creative ideals.
This week on the Inkstuds hour of power, we took a break from the normal interviewing madness, to talk about comix we love that have come out over the last 6 months. We discuss work from Top Shelf, Drawn and Quarterly, Fantagraphics, Buenaventura Press, and more. Artist that we love, include, Anders Nilsen, Dan Zettwoch, and tons more.
Shannon joined us in the studio to talk about her new anthology, Pet Noir. Its a great collection of true crime stories involving pets. Its a really fun read, that everyone should check out. It reminds me of DC's big book collections.
Wow, this one is awesome. Jeff Smith, the creator of Bone, joined us this week to chat about his new Shazam series, and of course his epic work, Bone. It was really neat, because we got into all sorts of insites to his work. Jeff is a master of his craft and his latest book, Shazam - Monster Society of Evil, is one of my favorite comix of the year so far. Check it out, or else.
Joe and Sean are a couple of talented kids destined for greatness. I have been a fan of their prospective works for quite sometime, and you should be as well.
Today I was joined by Matt Loux, author of SideScrollers, an awesome graphic novel of teenage adolescent fun, without a touch of angst. Its a great book, and Matt was a fun guy to talk to.
This week I was joined by K. Thor Jensen, author and artist of Red Eye/Black Eye, the latest book to come out by alternative comix. We had a little technical difficulty for the first 15 minutes, but after that, Thor rocked the mic.
This week, we were joined by Dennis P. Eichhorn, author of alternative comic staple Real Stuff. Dennis's work is awesome, and extremely influential in the world of autobio comix. And the man has more great tales than you can imagine.
Today we were supposed to be doing an interview with Dan Nadel, the editor of the excellent Art Out of Time collection. Unfortunately Dan was only able to join us for the last 10 minutes. So for the rest of the show, Robert Dayton and I chatted about some of Dans work, comix, pop culture, and more.
This week on the Inkstuds radio hour of fun, I was joined by Dave McCaig. Dave is master of comix colouring, with such awesome outputs under his belt including Ultimate Hulk vs. Wolverine, Nextwave, and thwack more. He also does the covers for the Batman Strikes comic series. His colouring jobs really stand out in the realm of comix, for his ability to expand beyond the mundane colour palate, and go beyond.

Today, I was luckily enough to be able to have a chance to interview Ivan Brunetti. Ivan recently edited a comix anthology for Yale Press, that is one of the best recent collections of comix goodness. Ivan is also the mastermind of the Schizo series from Fantagraphic books, a series full of goodness. and look forward to his collection, coming out in the new year, Misery Loves Comedy.
