When athletes face this situation they need to right away change that way of thinking and continue to work hard, which leads to two positive benefits: (1) better performance and (2) more mental toughness. Mental toughness is the ability to focus forward on your goals, stay positive and find a way to overcome.
When athletes suffer from intense nerves and choke, coaches, Parents, or sport psych would say You need to go out there and believe in yourself. They would say things like, "You're a great athlete, why are you second-guessing yourself like this? Just go out there and play the way you KNOW you can."
