Brothers Ya’koob and Abdulrahman Al Refaie declare themselves proudly as the Kuwaiti hip hop group Sons of Yusuf. They are both shaking and Shayking the World with their recently released first album, effortlessly blend American hiphop and Arab music singing in both Arabic and English, sampling khaleeji drums as well as lines from iconic Kuwaiti plays like Bye Bye London, and referencing Muslim and Arab cultural and historical figures. They go from stories of their grandfather the pearl diver to tales of modern microaggressions and full blown racism in the aftermath of the gulf war in the US. The result is music that speaks to a truly global audience, particularly those who have grown up between cultures and didn’t have music that spoke to every facet of their identity. Sally speaks to Abdulrahman about their new album, making their mark and changing the world through music. Track Listing: - HALA هلا (We Dem Boyz Arabia Remix) - A Night in Córdoba (feat. CyHi The Prynce) - Mashallah (Quarantine Video) ft. Muhsinah and Terrace Martin - Diving for Pearls ft Jay Electronica - Different - One Time (أيام الطيبين) - People of The Book ft. Isam B - The Balance (feat. Shafiq Husayn) - No Caliphates (feat. Talib Kweli)

Ramadan is not only the month of fasting but also the month of giving, with the reward for charity and good deeds multiplied during this time. It’s during this time that the Prophet Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him encouraged us to give more generously. In fact we are taught that in being generous, this is the way that we are increased in prosperity. In a hadith, “Allah says, ‘Spend, O son of Adam, and I shall spend on you.’” The Prophet peace be upon him said: “When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things, including Sadaqah Jariyah, or charity that continues on after his passing. There are many forms of charity, and people are encouraged to give what they can. The blessings in giving cannot be underestimated, with many psychological benefits as well. Studies show that giving money gave people more joy and happiness than spending it on themselves, with a similar effect arising out of performing acts of kindness. Just as importantly, giving also promotes cooperation and social connection, with a ripple effect where you are more likely to receive in return. Even more powerfully, when we give, it evokes empathy and gratitude. Sally spoke to Historian and educator Idris Mears, the founder of Book Quarter at Alserkal Cultural Foundation about the importance of generosity in Ramadan and why it’s particularly important this year.

Author of Table Tales: The Global Nomad Cuisine of Abu Dhabi, Hanan Sayed Worrell loves to bring people together to tell their stories over food, and the lockdown hasn’t stopped her from doing just that. During the pandemic she launched “The Distant Social Dinner Society” where guests get together for a dinner party over zoom, with the concept evolving in Ramadan to become Iftar from Afar. She created this in collaboration with NYU Abu Dhabi Professor Jonathan Shannon, and they actually modeled the idea on Boccaccio’s Decameron, in which ten Florentines fled to the hills to escape the ravages of the plague in 1348, each of them telling stories over the course of their 10 day “sheltering in place,” and in the same way, the Table Tales Distant Social Dinner Society consists of ten diners sharing a virtual meal, telling stories of and about food and community. Sally was guest at this week’s Iftar from Afar, along with a diverse group of people who were invited to break bread virtually, including Asma Sedeeq Al Mutawa, the founder of the Multaqa Cultural Salon, CNN’s John Defterios, and two professors from the American University of Sharjah who are originally from China, Professors Shaojin Chai and Yuting Wang, who is the author of Between Islam and the American Dream: An Immigrant Muslim Community in Post-9/11 America. With cuisine from all over the world including Indonesia, Yemen, Iraq, Palestine, Morocco, Sudan and more, find out what each guest shared at the virtual Iftar table!

This week with the tragic death of Kobe Bryant and his daughter, we also lost another young woman who was such a bright light in the world, helping tens of thousands of people through her social and ethical entrepreneurship, all while fighting a brave battle against a rare form of cancer. Leila Janah is a name that you need to know, if you didn’t already. She was a serial entrepreneur who focused her career on ending global poverty, founding three organizations over her career working across the for-profit and non-profit sectors, including Samasource, Samaschool and Luxmi. Leila’s motto at Samasource was “Give work”. She believed that the best thing you can do to help the global poor, especially women, was not giving charity, but allowing the underpriveliged to benefit economically from their time and talent. She believed that work is dignity. Work is empowerment. It is inclusion. And Samasource proved that everyone could contribute by going into some of the most difficult places on earth, connect them to the Internet, and pay them to provide services to the biggest tech companies in the world. Samasource was able to employ people from underserved areas to train artificial intelligence algorithms. Samaschool, a non-profit program which she also founded teaches primarily low-income workers how to use freelance work to find financial stability or learn new skills through paid job experience. It’s the only organization where city governments officially direct welfare recipients who want to learn how to use flexible work to improve their circumstances. AI, globalization and freelancing are all at the heart of the tech industry’s ethical battles and yet Leila had the compassion and the sharp intellect to create solutions in these areas that benefited thousands. Leila was not only a tech entrepreneur, but she was also deeply connected to nature, which led her to create Luxmi, an ultra-clean skin care brand that uses impact-sourced botanicals that supports biodiversity and social justice. I was lucky enough to introduce Leila on stage at the 2018 Sharjah Entrepreneurship festival where her speech inspired everyone present. She was so smart, so warm, very sharp and so creative, you couldn’t help but be drawn by her. While her social media posts showed her persuing her passions, she also shared her ongoing battle with Epithelioid Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer. Despite her battle, she always had a beeming smile, was always talking about her next project, and always sharing her hopes and dreams. Leila Janah passed away on Thursday at the age of 37. May her legacy and inspiration continue to live on long after she is gone.
