Katonya grew up with the belief that black people did not need sun protection. She learned from a dermatologist that the moles that she would see from the older women from her family were not genetic, but the direct result of sun damage. Shocked by this, she started her journey in searching for a safe sunblock that did not leave a white cast on her skin. Since the market was lacking sunscreens that were inclusive with her skin tone, and one that was free of chemical actives, Katonya created Unsun Cosmetics.

In this episode, she clarifies that a higher SPF number does not mean a great higher amount of protection. The gap between an SPF 30 and SPF 50 are so small that using an SPF 30 is perfectly okay. To illustrate, SPF 30 gives 97% protection and SPF 50 gives 98% protection.

2020 has been quite a year and I find my usual self not as zen as I'd like and can be. This week's Hello Beauty guest is Acaderma's CEO & Co-Founder, Dr. Shuting Hu. Dr. Hu is a post-doctoral researcher and scientist that developed Acaderma, a cosmeceutical brand that meets at the intersection of academic research and botanical skincare to find better solutions for healthy skin alternatives. Acaderma is a clean beauty brand that adopts a clean behavior from start to finish. What this means is that being clean to them is meaningful because they are mindful of how they develop their ingredients and other materials that ensure less pollution and waste to the environment. Their formulas are not only safe for people, but for the environment as well.
It should be noted that She was awarded the prestigious 2013 Henry Maso Young Cosmetic Scientist Award for her research of “Activity and mechanism of natural resorcinol type phenolics from the twigs of Cudrania tricuspidata as skin whitening agents” by The International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC). Dr. Hu's passion radiates as she talks about the careful development of her products. It takes her around 3 years to commercialize the ingredients and to scale up the technology! Acaderma's Star Light Spot Corrector is my ultimate favorite (if I had to pick one, but I honestly am a fan and believer of her entire line!) because I have seen my dark spots noticeably decrease in size in just as quick as 3 days! As a scientist, she is able to bring her expertise to the brand as she knows what ingredients will work best together. I learned that it's enough to only use serums in your skincare regimen and that you can do away without using moisturizer! In this episode, we learn about one of their most special ingredient, the African Kinkeliba, which grows only in the West Africa Sub-Sahara region. We are bombarded with so much information daily that it's difficult to determine if sources are reliable sometimes. Information is readily available at our fingertips that we just consume and consume and may not even have time to check the validity of the resources, especially when it's coming from a source that we admire, look up to, or just feel like we resonate with. I admit that I fall prey to this at times especially when it comes to diet and nutrition, which is why I am excited about this week's Hello Beauty guest, Dr. Gabrielle Lyon.
Dr. Lyon is a functional medicine physician specializing in the concept of muscle-centric medicine. She is also a speaker and media contributor, and has been a guest on The Doctors and written for Muscle & Fitness, Women's Health, Men's Health, and Harper's Bazaar. Dr. Lyon shares that we are under muscled, and not over-fat. She clarifies that we don't eat for protein but we eat for amino acid. She explains facts about going vegan/vegetarian for health or the environment, the fallacy on eating more meat, if we should only buy organic/grass-fed meat, and so much more.
