Catherine and Donald Wygal are a married couple who, after a life-long struggle, have each lost over 100 pounds. Join them as they work on keeping the weight off and pass along what they’ve learned along the way.
So, you listened to our most recent episode and you managed to navigate the Halloween candy being thrown at you and you stayed on track. Congratulations, that’s not an easy task. But just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, it turns out there’s another shark in there. This shark’s name is Daylight Saving Time. But instead of arriving like a shark to eat you, it’s leaving. Whatever. The shark analogy still works. Many of us have a difficult time with the shortened daylight hours arriving at the same time as the colder weather. It makes sticking to healthy habits an even more difficult job. This week, Catherine and Donald give some suggestions for adjusting by making changes to your clothes, movement, and food and the concept of Hygge makes an appearance all the way from Denmark. Plus, Donald watches Matterhorn jumping, Catherine’s knees come a knocking, and the couple introduces you to Hot Axe Throwing.
Be sure to listen all the way to the end for a special announcement about the show.

Most lagoons are associated with a color. When you visit The Blue Lagoon, you expect to find a couple of shipwrecked teenagers teaching themselves biology. When you visit The Black Lagoon, you expect to find a creature who isn’t too happy to see you. But what do you expect to find when you visit The Snack Lagoon? You guessed it, another creature. But this time, the creature is you. And this creature is hungry. Hungry for snacks! This week, Catherine and Donald help you navigate this particular lagoon during Halloween candy season and beyond. Plus, Catherine sets you up to find The Crypt Keeper, Donald hangs out in high cabinets, and the couple finally reveal exactly who Abbott and Costello will meet.

If you’re a person in the world, and most of us are, you have probably heard of GLP-1 medication for weight loss. Listener James wrote in to ask about navigating some of the unexpected hurdles of taking it. GLP-1s aren’t part of our own routine, but we think it’s great that they’re available for those who benefit from them. People deserve options that fit their needs. Plus, Catherine is a recently certified GLP-1 coach! This week, she and her sidekick husband Donald, talk about how GLP-1 drugs work, common side effects, letting go of your reliance on hunger cues, best nutritional practices, and managing eating out with friends. Whether you’re curious about GLP-1s or already taking GLP-1s, this is the episode for you. Plus, Catherine introduces babies, Donald is a trophy husband, and what the “G” in “GLP-1” stands for may surprise you.
If you or someone you know is interested in GLP-1 coaching, please email weonlylookthin@gmail.com.

Brainteasers. Puzzlers. Riddles. Toughies. You threw them all at us and we delivered the goods. And what I mean is, you asked us so many great questions for our 400th episode, that we spent a whole other episode, this one, giving you great answers. Does being vegetarian make it easier? How do you think self-esteem affects weight loss? What’s your favorite piece of advice that you’ve given? The answer to these questions and more await within! Plus, Donald calls upon Ethos, Catherine gets mail in the mail, and the couple get into the dark underbelly of love and support.

If you’re a baby and you’re reading this, you’re probably a genius. Congratulations Baby Genius! If you’re older than a baby, you’ve probably taken part in some sort of emergency preparedness drill. A fire drill, earthquake drill, tornado drill, or some other exercise so that you can be ready if the worst happens. Hopefully you never need to use what you learn in these drills, but most of us would agree that it’s a good idea to be ready just in case. What you probably haven’t done, is make a plan if the worst happens with your healthy habits. This week, Catherine and Donald talk about the importance of practicing and having a plan in a habit emergency so that you don’t just keep digging yourself into a deeper hole when things get difficult. Plus, Catherine looks forward to Public Service Announcements, Donald is not sailing away, and we sure could use Dick Van Dyke again.

There are many types of bandits in the world. We all know about train robbers, highwaymen, and cattle rustlers, oh, my! What about those bandits who are stealing our time? It seems like we never have enough time to exercise, eat right, or get a good night’s sleep. What if that wasn’t true and was just a story we’re telling ourselves? What if the real bandit was just the way we were looking at our lives? This week, Catherine and Donald talk about how we often tell ourselves that we don’t have time and then act in a way that proves ourselves right. By reframing our narratives about time, we can change our identities from “I don’t have time” to “I’m the kind of person who makes room for things that matter”. Plus, Catherine watches one inappropriate movie after another, Donald wonders when he can start blaming other people for things, and even toasters can be traumatizing.

It seems like it would be a good idea to envision your best day. Imagine everything going exactly to plan. You conceive of eating on target, nailing your exercise, and getting a great night’s sleep. Imagining and planning for all this would be a good idea except that it’s opposite day. This week, Catherine and Donald ask you to imagine your worst day; the day when you do everything wrong when it comes to your weight loss and fitness. By looking at all of your worst-case behavior, it can make better choices more obvious. From there, you can make realistic improvements towards your ultimate goals. Plus, there were shivings in Catherine’s school yard, Donald feels the burn deep in his soul, and it turns out that this episode is a dramatic dramatization.

You might not believe this, but some people wear clothes every day. For some of those very same people, clothes can be a mental burden when you’re unhappy in your own body. Even when your health and fitness habits are successful, it can be difficult to know how to deal with clothes that no longer fit and when to buy new ones. Listener Kat wrote in all the way from The United Kingdom to ask Catherine and Donald for advice on when to re-shop for new outfits. The couple talk about the importance of feeling good now, conducting a closet audit, and how to not break the bank when you might not be at the same size for long. Plus, Catherine has keen Sherlockian powers, Donald wins a participation coupon, and it turns out that the locals call it “The UK”.

We know that some of you are fans of alternating current while others are fans of direct current, so in this episode we have included both AC and DC. Do you ever think about a time when you were really in shape or really on track and wonder what happened? Do you feel some guilt or shame when you try to compare yourself right now to that past version of yourself? This week, Catherine and Donald discuss how we often compare ourselves to an ideal and how trying to immediately meet that ideal holds us back from real progress. It’s important to honor the person you are and salute yourself before you take the first step. Plus, Catherine is a gap bridger, Donald has recipes for Australian chicken parm, and our main thing is bringing good information.

Moves. Everyone makes them, but not everyone makes the right ones. Whether it’s busting out the cabbage patch at the company office party or replying to that email from a stranger asking for your banking information, we’ve all made some wrong moves. But have you ever found yourself saying, “I’m making all the right movies, but the number on the scale isn’t budging”? This week, Catherine and Donald talk about examining the moves that you are making and figuring out if you really are making all of the right ones. By stepping back and being really honest with yourself, you might find some moves that need some improvement. Plus, Catherine writes a love letter to ketchup, Donald is captain of the hot dog team, and someone uses Photoshop to add avocado.

When you’re about to set off on a weight loss and fitness journey, adventure, or journventure, you probably don’t think about asking elves, dwarves, or hobbits to join you. But you might, in your own way, be bringing goblins, orcs, and Ringwraiths along in the form of people or influencers who are keeping you from reaching your goals. This week, Catherine and Donald talk about the importance of the company you keep, the people, podcasts, social media follows, books, and articles you surround yourself with and how they can help or hurt your progress. By building The Fellowship that supports your healthy choices and lifts you up, you can get to where you’ve always wanted to be. Plus, Catherine thinks that modern malls are full of cheese fountains, Donald journeys to Mount Fondue, and the hobbits did a lot of walking without wearing their Fitbits.

Most of us know that French is virtually impossible to translate, but there are a select few who understand some of the words. Luckily, We Only Look Thin’s Catherine is one of those select few. This week, the couple talk about how the culinary process, “Mise en Place”, or “Putting in Place”, can help us to achieve weight loss and fitness goals. When we put the right habits and systems in place, it helps us do the things we say we want to do. Slow down, show yourself some patience, really observe your world, and ask yourself how you can make it easier. Plus, Catherine knows that the locals call it “French Land”, Donald doesn’t have time for a sense of calm, and the industrial revolution has taught us nothing.

If you’re like most of us, you’ve wished for a magical body transformation. To be granted a wish and to wake up in a brand new, perfect body. And you’ve probably promised that you’ve learned a lesson and you’ll always be good from now on if you can just be thin now. But if that really happened, would you know how to maintain that weight or would you celebrate with food? This week, Catherine and Donald talk about looking forward to maintaining your goal weight even as you work towards hitting that goal weight. You need to work on putting in place the skills, systems, habits, and behaviors in place to keep the goal weight you’re looking to hit. Plus, Catherine likes doilies and whisking, Donald tries to attract listeners from outer space, and the 1970s did not care about backstory.

We’ve all asked Mary, Mary quite contrary how her garden grows and she’s given us some story about using silver bells and cockle shells and pretty maids all in a row. That story doesn’t seem to check out. What effect do silver bells have on plant growth? What even is a “cockle shell” anyway? When you think about it, the right question should be, “how do I make my mindset grow?” You’ve come to the right place for answers. This week, Catherine and Donald talk about the importance of a growth mindset in achieving your weight and health goals and more importantly, how you shift your mindset in the right direction. You’re more capable of achieving difficult goals than you probably think. Plus, Catherine is jealous of everyone, Donald definitely doesn’t work for a sneaker company, and space-age water coolers really do exist.

Labor Day Sale?!? Pumpkin Spice?!? Halloween Decorations?!? Wasn’t the summer just getting started? If you’re like a lot of us, you entered the year with lofty goals for your weight, health, and fitness. And if you’re like a lot of us, things haven’t turned out how you’d hoped. It’s tempting as we head into the Fall to just put it all off until next year. This week, Catherine and Donald walk you through the habits that they are re-committing to this fall so that they don’t dig themselves into a deeper hole before next year. Go into the last part of the year in a way that you’ll be proud of. Plus, someone throws persimmons at Catherine, Donald eats a kiwi out of spite, and the couple gives you dobs, dabs, and dollops.

Have you ever thought to yourself something like, “a positive attitude just means you’re not really paying attention to the word” or “these people need to get their heads out of the clouds and face that fact that they’re never going to get there”.? If you answered “yes”, you might need to work on your resilience. This week, Catherine and Donald talk about the habits of people who are able to take the bad with the good and use it all to achieve their weight loss goals. It turns out that you can cultivate a growth frame of mind. Like with many things, it takes developing habits and practicing them. If you’re so afraid of failure that you don’t try anything, you’re also not trying to succeed at anything. Plus, Catherine pays homage to an 80’s classic, Donald wants to be part of the sack lunch bunch, and none of this has anything to do with Lawrence Welk.

When you’re in your 20’s, most people want to lose weight to look better in a pair of Vidal Sassoon blue jeans. As we get older, most people still want to lose weight to look better in a pair of Vidal Sassoon blue jeans. This week, Catherine and Donald talk about the importance of finding a deeper “why” for your weight and fitness goals. What do you value in life? What kinds of things do you want in your future? Answering these types of questions for yourself can be one of the keys to long-term success. Plus, Donald wears shoeboxes for shoes, Catherine tries to be more cantankerous, and the couple introduces a kiss cam for podcasts.

The Olympics may be winding down, but there are still a ton of lessons that “regular people” can learn from Olympians. In a lot of ways, hitting a goal weight is a lot like winning an Olympic medal. This week, Catherine and Donald talk about how, just like top athletes, you need to start planning for after the event even before you get there. Plus, Catherine Ws the Heck, Donald names tunes in notes, and you learn the truth about where Olympians spend the offseason.

If you’re like me, you were watching the Olympic Men’s gymnastics rings event this morning and you were thinking, “I could never do that”. Or maybe you were thinking, “It must be nice to just be able to do nothing except exercise all the time. If I could do that, I’d finally be thin.” Or maybe, “I would have made a great pole vaulter if I’d tried.” It turns out that none of those thoughts really helps us on our health and fitness journey-adventure. But what if there were some things that “regular people” could learn from Olympic Athletes? This week, with the help of an article by Joe Kita on WebMD, Catherine and Donald break down some mindset perspectives used by top athletes that you can apply to your own daily life. Plus, Catherine is better than an article writer, Donald has tendency separation surgery, and most sporting events teach us nothing.

You probably think it’s a coincidence that the word “Storm” rhymes with the word “Swarm”, but is it? Probably. However, it isn’t a coincidence that when you are trying to change your behaviors, one of the most effective brainstorming methods is the Swarm of Behaviors created by BJ Fogg, PhD. This week, Catherine and Donald break down the Swarm of Behaviors and give you some examples on how to apply it to your weight loss habits so that you can take “I want to lose weight” and turn that into actual weight loss. Plus, Donald wants to start a smash book, Catherine attacks the letter “K”, and we’re not randos on the internet because you know us.

Everyone agrees that there are only two kinds of people in this world: Spice Girls people and Backstreet Boys people. But what if we put aside our differences and used the lessons taught by both super groups to get to the heart of our weight loss and fitness goals? This week, Catherine and Donald talk about the first step in BJ Fogg’s Behavior Design model; clarify the aspiration. When you set a nebulous “pie in the sky” goal, it can make it difficult to figure out how to get there. Asking yourself what you want and why, can narrow your focus and make the habits involved clearer. Plus, Catherine swim, swam, swums, Donald does not rock the flannel, and women’s puns are good, but men’s puns are bad.

If you’re a space bounty hunter travelling with your adopted child, you probably don’t worry too much about weighing yourself. On the other hand, if you’ve had life-long weight issues you probably worry about it a lot. Maybe too much. Or maybe not enough. Developing a healthy relationship with the scale can be a difficult minefield to navigate. This week, Catherine and Donald walk you through seven tips for using the scale in a way that works best for you. It’s kind of like using The Force; there’s a light side and a dark side. Plus, Catherine explains the “Axioms of Feminometry”, Donald is also known as “Jimmy A-plus-ichinson”, and marriage is about one-upmanship.

And what if we let you know that Catherine and Donald take three links in the ability chain and help you troubleshoot adding more movement into your life? Now it’s a slam dunk, right? Right. Plus, Donald has a good luck wrist injury, Catherine thinks the Marlboro Man can solve her problems, and The President is monitoring how many jumping jacks you can do.

BJ Fogg, author of “Tiny Habits”, encourages people to make behavior change easier to do. Make it more convenient to do the habits that you want to put in place. This week, Catherine and Donald talk about using the five links in the Ability Chain to make it easier to eat the way you want to in order to hit your weight loss and health goals. Figuring out what’s holding you back and simplifying the barriers is one of the key steps in lasting habit change. Plus, Catherine gives you a standard issue gargoyle, Donald pits Professor X vs Professor Fogg, and get ready for selfies with sandwiches.

If you’re a character from Game of Thrones, you might be known as the “Breaker of Chains”, but if you aren’t a character from Game of Thrones, you probably aren’t. However, even if it’s not a literal chain, there may be links in a metaphorical chain holding you back from achieving your weight loss goals. This week, Catherine and Donald talk about BJ Fogg’s “ability chain” and how you can use it figure out why you’re not doing the habits that you say you want to do. Really looking at each link in the ability chain can push you in the direction of changing your habits for the better. Plus, Catherine rides the weight loss wagon, Donald makes enemies of the Blue Birds, and Time has fascinated for generations.

If Schoolhouse Rock taught me anything, it’s that three is the magic number. And if that’s true then Episode 333 must be triple magic! AND, it’s part three of our series on Logic Loopholes. Is that too many threes in one episode? Have Catherine and Donald gone too far this time? Listen and find out! This week, the couple explore the final three (another three!) of Gretchen Rubin’s Logic Loopholes and add a few of their own. These logic loopholes are essentially lies that we tell ourselves to “get out of” doing the things we say we want to do. At We Only Look Thin, we show you how they relate to weight loss and fitness because that’s our game. Recognizing that you’re fooling yourself is an important step in making habit change that lasts. Plus, Catherine has the fruit platter of her dreams, Donald makes a double nerd reference, and the couple bring back the fear of the rhombus.

The middle episode of a trilogy is often considered filler. Just a bridge to get from the set up in part one to the final payoff in part three. But this middle part is more of a hole and filler. Loophole that is. In the second part of their Logic Loophole series, Catherine and Donald talk about 4 more of Gretchen Rubin’s “barriers to habit formation” and add a few more of their own. Which of these stories are you telling yourself to justify your habit choices? Plus, Catherine goes back to now, Donald doesn’t feel some kind of way, and the couple wear sailor suits and eat giant lollipops.

Loopholes. Sometimes we work so hard to jump through them, we should call them “hoopholes”. Because people make themselves jump through hoops. Get it? This week, the couple go through first three of Gretchen Rubin’s “Logic Loopholes”; excuses we tell ourselves to get out of doing what we promised ourselves we’d do. Then the couple add a few of their own. Maybe, if we stopped trying to “cheat the system” and put that focus on doing what we say we want to, maybe we would achieve our goals. Plus, Catherine makes it a piece of cake, Donald wears a cheap suit, and the couple are haunted by a chocolate fountain.

When we name an episode of this show after DC Comics’ wackiest super team, it might be easy to assume that Donald came up with the title, but in fact, Catherine did. Maybe she’s more of a nerd than you thought. Anyhoodle, Catherine found an article from timeular.com about the importance of setting realistic goals in your work life and the gang here at We Only Look Thin decided to make it about weight loss because that’s what we do. When we set unrealistic, “pie in the sky” goals, we’re doomed to failure before we begin. However, when we set out to engage in realistic habits, we’re setting ourselves up for success. Plus, Catherine gets marriage out of the way, Donald glides into his dotage, and people burn a lot of calories by carrying staplers in briefcases.

What has dinosaurs, talking mice, street teams, and 3 cats in a trench coat? This episode of course! Have you ever said to yourself, “I’ll never do that again” only to find yourself right back there at some point? Saying things like “never” and “always” sets us up for disappointment, shame, and an all or nothing attitude. The key to long-term weight loss success is about gradual improvement and about getting right back on track when things don’t go the way we want. Aim for consistency, not perfection. Plus, Catherine does a new cereal-based dance, Donald visits “Pasta R Us”, and the couple make a blood oath to their listeners.

Now, we run down the second half of the ten habits: that’s nearly 5! Catherine and Donald take you through the weight loss, fitness, and mental health benefits of cutting people out of your life, honoring commitments to yourself, unplugging, and more. You are worth the Invesment in yourself. Plus, Donald calls the police from a land line, Catherine invests in worms, and we are not yacht rock folk.

If weight loss and fitness were a video game, you’d complete a level and move on to the next. It isn’t, but in this episode, we’re pretending that it is. This week, Donald and Catherine guide you through one of the higher levels; when you’re in range of your goal weight. You’re tracking, meeting calorie and activity goals, working on your emotional issues with food, and becoming a detective of yourself. So now what? It’s time to figure out what your goal weight should be and time to prepare for what comes after you hit it. Plus, Donald asks for more punctuation, Catherine is good at the mashed potato; both the food and the dance, and the couple are all about the condiments.

This week, take a cue from Q*Bert! In the third part of the We Only Look Thin series on building habits from the ground up, we’re about half-way up the pyramid. Catherine and Donald ask you to start looking at your past plans, letting go of the idea of “one weird trick”, setting a realistic weight goal, and how to set a calorie goal. This is where results get real. Plus, Catherine gets re-combobulated, Donald puts you on double secret probation, and the rubber meets the snake road.

As that song from Stranger Things says, “Be running up that hill. Be running up that building”. Only in this case, that “hill” or “building” is a pyramid. And here’s the twist; it’s metaphorical and it’s based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. You didn’t see that coming, did you? In part 2 of their spectacular, multi-part series on building sustainable weight loss from the ground up, Catherine and Donald talk about going from just finding your footing to adding structure and purpose to your health and fitness plan. Plus, Donald doesn’t know what plants do, Catherine moisturizes with water, and we put the fun back in fundamentals.

When you hear the word “pyramid”, you might think about how King Tut got so funky or that food chart they taught us about in school or maybe those schemes you know you should stay away from. If you’re Catherine and Donald, you think about all of thsoe things, but you also think about Maslow’s hierachy of needs. We Only Look Thin has taken the theory from psychology and made it about weight loss and fitness. This week, the couple talk about what to do when you’re at the very bottom. How can you find your footing in terms of mindset, food, and movement? Listen to find out. Plus, Donald starts a heavy metal band, Catherine takes other people’s dogs for walks, and the couple advises you NOT to save your drama for your mama.

Wait, what? You’re telling me that there are even more ways that I sabotage myself? We sure are. You didn’t think you were getting off that easy did you? In fact, there are so many ways to sabotage yourself that you could write a book about it. Alice Boyes, PhD DID write a book about it and your chums at We Only Look Thin are here to talk some more about it. This week, Catherine and Donald take another deep dive into forms of self-sabotage and how they can stop you from hitting your health and fitness goals. For example, did you know that you could be too optimistic? Listen to find out how. Plus, Catherine sharpens her pencil, Donald posits something or other, and clearly there are other forces at play.

Is taking weight loss and fitness advice from Johnny Cash song lyrics irresponsible or the key to overnight success? Probably. Alice Boyes, in her book “The Healthy Mind Toolkit”, talks about patterns of self-sabotage and how we trip ourselves up by following one extreme way of thinking or another. This week, Catherine and Donald break down three of them and make them about weight loss and fitness because everything is about weight loss and fitness. The couple help you to recognize when you’re stuck on one side of a coin or another and how to find the center path on the way to achieving your goals. Plus, Catherine gets stuck on the timely rabbit, Donald falls for a werewolf, and the couple encourages you to swipe in whichever direction isn’t the good one.

If you’re flying with Samuel L. Jackson you might be concerned about snakes on your plane. If you’re not, and you are trying to hit or maintain health and fitness goals, you might be more concerned about the snacks on your plane (although you wouldn’t be unconcerned about the snakes). It’s summer vacation season again and although vacations are usually wonderful, they can also lead to regret and shame about over-indulging or even lead to giving up entirely. Catherine and Donald have both been through it too and this week the couple give tips and advice on how to handle health and fitness goals when a vacation takes you out of your comfort zone. Plus, Catherine asks you to single down instead of double down, Donald makes hotels bring him all the appliances, and would it even be an episode of We Only Look Thin if they didn’t talk about Samuel L. Jackson again?

At We Only Look Thin, we’ve found that when it comes to health and fitness, finding the middle ground is what leads to real and sustainable change. Unfortunately, being reasonable doesn’t get people fired up. Inspired by a question from a member of WOLT place, Catherine and Donald talk about sharpening your critical thinking skills when you are confronted by those who think any attempt to take agency in your weight is disordered. Just because we’ve been burned by predatory companies and “get thin quick schemes” doesn’t mean that our health doesn’t matter. It also doesn’t mean that we should throw up our hands and do nothing. Knowing how your body responds to what you eat and how you move matters. Plus, Catherine goes on a journal-venture, Donald attempts to bribe Mayor McCheese, and Pandora’s Box might not have been so bad if it was single-serving sized.

You are cordially invited to the We Only Look Thin after party! Be sure to read all the fine print before sending your RSVP. WOLT Place member Sarah asked how to restart after a few days of “out of control” eating and Catherine answered and then Catherine and Donald answered again in the form of this podcast. We all have setbacks that make us feel like we need to restart, recover, and reset. Setbacks are normal and not proof that we are broken. We want to see a crazy, montage, clean slate when we think of a restart, but it’s really just about making the next healthy choice. Let go of the notion of before and after. Plus, Catherine breaks the fourth wall, Donald makes everything 10% less fun, and 90% of health and fitness questions can be answered with a gif.

It’s our Swiftisode part 3. You don’t have to be a Swifty to listen, but it doesn’t hurt. If you say the right things, talking to yourself can be productive. On the other hand, negotiating with yourself usually results in disappointment. This week, Catherine and Donald conclude their series on self-negotiation and taking it of your decision making. The couple focus on making policies, setting standards, and re-writing your self-negotiating in the process. Plus, Catherine is a nifty almost 50 Swifty, Donald pumps up the caring, and you should let this podcast take up some of your brain space.

Sadly, there was no sequel to the classic 1998 Samuel Jackson movie, “The Negotiator”. If there had been, I’d like to believe it would have been called, “The Negotiator 2: Still Negotiating”. Thankfully, there is a sequel to last week’s episode of We Only Look Thin about self-negotiation. And this is it! This week, Catherine and Donald continue to go through Nicole Booz’s article and talk about building your habits into systems, taking negotiation out of the process, and how creating plans and backup plans is one of the keys to long-term success. Plus, Catherine joins the Away Lacrosse Team, Donald breaks the first rule of Fight Club, and the couple invents a new dance craze that’s sweeping the nation.

When you think of “negotiations”, you probably think of a business deal or a labor dispute. When you think of “The Negotiator”, you probably think of the 1998 Samuel Jackson movie by that name. When it comes to sticking to our health and fitness goals, the real negotiator is often times the person looking back at us in the mirror. Yikes! Inspired by an article written by Nicole Booz, Catherine and Donald take you through the basics of self-negotiation, how to recognize when you’re doing it, and how to begin to call yourself on it. Recognizing your patterns is the first step in lasting behavior change. Plus, Donald is the Crystal Light of men, Catherine gives it a good Hoovering, and sometimes not giving a gift is the greatest gift of all.

Setbacks. No one needs them, but everyone has them. This week, listener Coco asks the We Only Look Thin team about how to deal with setbacks in your life that cause you to pause your Health and Fitness Journey. Catherine and Donald talk about adopting a long view mindset and about how safety nets and insurance are important. Hopefully, we never use them, but they help us when setbacks occur. Pausing your health and fitness journey isn’t a moral failure and is sometimes necessary for your mental wellbeing. This episode also contains the exciting and brief return of The Tip Of the Week (TOW!). Plus, Catherine stops, drops, and rolls, Donald lets Calgon take him away, and the couple used to be world-famous trapeze artists.

Some podcasts can discuss the burning bush and others can discuss burning calories, but this is the only podcast that discusses both! This week, Catherine and Donald present ten or so MORE principles for healthy and sustainable weight loss. How can We Only Look Thin afford to give this much advice? Volume! The couple discuss “all or nothing” attitudes, weird tricks, sleep, perfectionism and more. Plus, Catherine didn’t pay attention during nap reading time, Donald bangs on something, and lots of things turn into macaroni.

Listen to this episode or thou shall be smoten! Just like Charton Heston in that movie about Moses and the Ten Commandments (what was it called?), Catherine and Donald present ten or so principles for healthy and sustainable weight loss. Instead of carving them into stone tablets, the couple record them onto a podcast which makes it easier to listen to. They discuss eyeballing condiments, eating off of the plates of others, negative self-talk, N.E.A.T, motivation, and more. Plus, Catherine acts like a trained unicyclist, Donald crosses the line between Bible talk and pirate talk, and eating hummus is basically like eating nature.

If you only listen to one health and fitness podcast that brings up Enya, Falco, Fabio, Hobbit Sticks and Light Sabers, this should be the one. Continuing our series based on questions that our listeners asked on The Socials (as the kids call them), Listener Megan wants to know how to get through “the slog” of being in “the middle” of your fitness journventure. Catherine and Donald deliver the good news and bad news; there is no “middle” and you can adjust your habits and mindset so that there is no “slog”. Plus, Catherine gets a lucky shark bite, Donald gets attacked by flying monkeys, and the couple teach you not to give up when you can’t make cabbage soup during long car rides.

We Only Look Thin asked you which topics you’d like us to talk about and you answered. Now Catherine and Donald will answer your answers, which were really questions, in the form of a podcast or ten. This week, the couple address two questions from Instagram from a listener who wants to know how to “eat healthy” when you have small children and no time and what to do with leftover ingredients. Spoiler alert; vegetables are not a punishment and don’t plan on giving your celery to Catherine. Plus, Catherine serves scary spaghetti, Donald is not Chef Boyardee, and the couple take babies to task.

First, we were told that fats were bad. Then we were told that carbs were bad. Next it was processed foods that were bad and cooked foods that were bad and on and on it went until the only things left that were “good” were Tab and celery. This week, Catherine and Donald discuss working your favorite foods into your diet without the guilt and shame. There are no “good” foods or “bad” foods; food doesn’t have a moral value. You can Portion, Plan, Pair, have a Policy and other “P-words” (revealed in the episode) so that you achieve your health and fitness goals and still enjoy the food that you are eating. Plus, Catherine rides the alphavater, Donald has all of the food-based holidays on his calendar, and Pluto is a dwarf letter.

Would you use a game spinner to choose an exercise routine? How about flipping a coin to pick your diet plan? What about using a Pop-O-Matic to figure out how many calories you’ll eat? You probably said “no” to all of these questions, but most people engage in bargaining or magical thinking at some point during their weight-loss adventure. People say things like, “Oh great and powerful wizard of the scale, if you just help me out this time, I promise I’ll be good from now on”. Donald and Catherine have been there too and this week the couple talk about why we do it and how to stop rolling the dice with our health and fitness decisions. The more agency and responsibility you take for yourself the more empowered you feel. Plus, Donald thinks clovers are orange, Catherine is all about the toy surprise, and at least one fortune cookie gives good advice.

Have you spent your life doing the Goldilocks with your weight loss and fitness plans? This one’s “too hard” and that one’s “too cold” and never finding one that’s “just right”? Did you blame it on the rain that was fallin’, fallin’? Did you blame it on the stars that didn’t shine that night? Whatever you do, don’t put the blame on you. Or maybe you should put the blame on you? This week, Catherine and Donald talk about their years of blaming all of the plans they tried for their inability to achieve their weight loss and fitness goals. Learning to adapt and modify plans to fit their needs was what finally got them there. Plus, Catherine goes WOLTing on the Railroad, Donald is lip-sunk, and it turns out that the couple are more than just the pretty faces of We Only Look Thin.

Some people love board games like Monopoly or Chutes and Ladders. Others love card games like Uno or Go Fish. For some, their favorite game is the Blame Game. When we don’t achieve a goal, such as a health and fitness goal, we often blame everyone and everything outside of ourselves. Catherine and Donald have done it too. This week, the couple talk about why we do it and give some advice on how to take responsibility for our own part in our circumstances. It may feel like a shot through the heart when you realize that you’re to blame. Plus, Donald doesn’t say “Cali”, Catherine thinks a 30-Day Hot Burn Fuel Power is a bad idea, and we learn that Pauly Shore is not related to the Jersey Shore despite having the same last name.

In classic We Only Look Thin fashion, we name an episode after a fictional 1970’s TV Detective that hardly anyone under 40 will remember. It’s good to know that some things never change. What also never changes is the desire that some people have to do almost anything other than count calories. They’d rather take any kind of pill, have any kind of surgery, or eat any kind of terrible tasting “superfood”, than track the calories that they eat. This week, Catherine and Donald give you the lowdown on why you should track your calories and some ways to adjust your mindset about it. It turns out that calories have consequences. Plus, Donald plays a tune on his cauliflower ukulele, Catherine throws out the baby with the Brussels sprouts, and the couple delivers the podcast equivalent of a blow to the solar plexus.

Love. Exciting and new. Come aboard; we’re expecting you. When the great poet Paul Williams wrote the lyrics to the Love Boat theme, he probably wasn’t thinking about couples who enabled each other’s weight gain, but that’s why Catherine and Donald are here. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, the couple bring you an episode about how love and relationships can lead to the grounding of the Health and Fitness Ship. The good news is that couples can work together on their goals and Catherine and Donald give you some ways to make that happen. Plus, Donald makes a hip 16th Centry Pop Culture reference, Catherine tells you the difference between catdog people and fishdog people, and the couple are clearly zestless.

This week, Catherine and Donald’s thoughts go even deeper. The couple talk you through the final 5 questions from an article by JoLynn Braley to ask yourself along your weight loss and fitness Jounventure (journey-adventure). Thinking is one of the top ways in which we have thoughts. But what if you really want deep thoughts? Do you need a thinking shovel or some kind of mind backhoe? No, those don’t exist. What you need is to ask questions of yourself. This week, Catherine and Donald bring you another 5 questions from an article by JoLynn Braley to ask yourself along your weight loss and fitness Jounventure (trademark We Only Look Thin). Are you looking at the right things that stand in your way? Do you have a coach in your corner? How is your mindset playing into your choices? See, I told you this was deep. Plus, Catherine goes crazy banana pants, Donald shockingly praises dad jokes, and this podcast has often been favorably compared to Masterpiece Theater.

You probably ask a lot of questions during your average day. How much is it? What’s in it for me? Who invented liquid soap? It turns out that some of the most important questions you can ask are of the person in the mirror. You didn’t see that twist coming, did you? Inspired by an article written by JoLynn Braley, We Only Look Thin takes you through 5 questions to ask yourself on your weight loss adventure journey. Why are you starting, is your choice of diet healthy and sane, and are your habits sustainable are just some of the questions addressed. Plus, Donald listens to podcasts on his burner phone, Catherine thinks chopping down a tree is a good gift, and the couple are jammin’ it out.

It’s a new year and so you’ll be imbued with magical powers to transform yourself into the person you’ve always wanted to be! But wait, isn’t that what you said last year too? That’s what Catherine and Donald used to think too. They spent most of their adult lives hoping that the mystical properties of a new year would allow them to accomplish their health and fitness goals. They made promises and resolutions only to “slip up” and then give up a short time later. This week, the couple talk about how to bring about meaningful and lasting change in the new year. Plus, Catherine won’t let going of being rad, Donald is still looking forward to Y2K, and this episode is a bop that slaps.

The week between Christmas and New Year’s Day can be a magical time, but it can also be a struggle. You might be torn between your big-city lifestyle and the simple country life from whence you came. Or maybe that was a Hallmark movie I saw? When it comes to health and fitness during the Holidays, we know we’re going to be inundated with holiday food, but there are less obvious challenges in front of us which can be even more difficult to navigate. It may seem counter-intuitive, but when we’re around family and friends, we sometimes feel like we don’t deserve a voice. This week, Catherine and Donald (mostly Catherine), talk about not waiting until you feel like a “grown-up” before asking for what you need. We become the people we want to be by doing the things that person does. Plus, Catherine is a genuine Lady, the magic was inside Donald all along, and this podcast is “very shackle”.
