In 2021, this was a bonus episode from season 1. At the time, we did Myers Briggs (MBTI) personality typing for Old Testament characters, and then released special Enneagram episodes for our patrons.
It's time to put the Enneagram episodes out there for everyone. This was just a fun way for us to explore Bible personalities, and I learned so much about these different characters through this process.

Before he was king- 1 Samuel 8-10 Reign as king 1 Sam 11-31
Saul came from a small family in the tribe of Benjamin. He lived in Israel and tended his father’s fields. Perhaps his humble beginnings may surprise you since he became such an megalomaniac. He became the first king of Israel. During his reign, he deteriorated in to jealousy and fits of anger and destruction. He was adept at self perservation at all costs. He hunted David to kill him but never succeeded, not without a lack of trying. He viewed people as objects to own (gave his son as a prisoner of war and his daughters were married to David in an effort to manipulate and destroy him). He increasingly developed a severe god-complex, he was very disobedient to God’s commands, he was ruthless, delusional, narcissistic, lacked empathy, resentful, and eventually disobeyed rules even he made. 5 times it mentions he was afraid, and he reacted irrationally. He was judgmental, obsessive, unreasonable, irrational, preoccupied with power, and used flattery often to get his way. He was the most unhealthy version of his personality type. Let’s not be like Saul. You can read all about this and more in 1 Samuel 8-31. Listen to the podcast for our typing of Saul and reasoning behind our decisions.
If Saul were interested in developing a healthier version of himself, thus reaching a more heroic status in life, he would’ve followed Proverbs 4:20-27 and let that be his guide.
A Healthy Saul would realize that he needed to do the following:
Develop empathy for others Practice restraint when dealing with fear, anger, lust Make friends that could support him, instead of soldiers and servants to protect him and serve him Listen before responding-He would’ve been obedient to God if he took the time to listen. He would’ve learned that David was not really a threat and that he had dedicated children and friends to support him. Ultimately this would’ve saved him the jealous and spiteful campaigns against David. Relax-take a break Saul, it’s not the end of the world. You ended up dying by your own hand because you just couldn’t bear to not have your way. (these tips are taken from the growth and development portion of his personality type on http://truity.com)
