This weeks episode features Chelsea from Majors Waggy Walks. Chelsea has worked with canines in a variety of ways including working for a rescue charity, photography and most recently as a professional dog walker.

In this episode we find out about her current companion… Major the Labrador. We discuss his love for agility and his occasional grumpiness around other dogs before getting into how Chelsea has struck out on her own in recent months to set up her own dog walking business.

We also talk about her love for Boxers and Spaniels and how a history of family dogs led to her love of canines. Additionally, we chat about the ins and outs of working for an animal sanctuary and the often bittersweet victories found in finding forever homes for dogs you’ve become attached to.

As always we finish by finding out what Chelsea would do if she was in charge… spoiler: we’ve got another thumbs down for the Dangerous Dogs Act!

If you’re in the area and looking for a dog walker you can get hold of Chelsea on Facebook/Instagram @majorswaggywalks or her website www.majorswaggywalks.co.uk. You can also follow Major himself on Instagram @major_storm.

Life of Riley Pet Bakery and Boutique started out as a home bakery to satiate the hunger of one poorly little Patterdale Terrier - Riley. Riley has since seen himself promoted to CEO (Chief Eating Officer) of a company that provides healthy, gluten free tasty treats, cakes and carob truffles to dogs from Scotland to Norfolk.

Today we speak to Sarah, PA and Chef to Riley, about how the business has grown from servicing local doggies to taking over her husbands ‘man-cave’ in order to send treats across the country. We also find out about how Life of Riley Pet Bakery and Boutique grew to accommodate paw balms and even homemade birthday cakes all on the back of customer requests. This year they’ll also be introducing Dogvent Calendars and Woofmas Boxes for the first time!

Sarah also talks to us about Jack “The ladies man” Jack Russell Terrier and his escapades during her childhood and how Hedwig the Siamese cat has got along with Riley since joining the family. As always we wanted to know what Sarah would make mandatory and outlaw if she were given supreme power - watch out it’s a controversial one this week LOL.

If you want to find out more you can get hold of Sarah by email (sarah@lifeofrileyuk.com), on Facebook/Instagram (@lifeofrileybakery) and if you’re lucky on Twitter (@lifeofrileybake) but perhaps don’t expect as quick a response on the latter!

Adam Bailey Rescues and Rehomes is a Dorset based animal rescue centre that helps horses, hens, geese, turkeys and of course… Dogs! Today we’re speaking to the founder of this foster based rescue - Adam Bailey himself - about how the project got up and running and what his daily activities include.

Adam talks about his four dogs (including a boxer cross called Phoebe that has been with him since the age of 18) and how initially helping fund surgery for a dog got him interested in fostering in the first place. To date Adam has helped re-home over 3000 animals through the foster based rescue.

We discuss why Adam thinks retractable leads should be outlawed, why a car-theory like exam should match owners to breeds (as well as making sure they’re educated on owning a dog!) and what has drawn him to breeds such as Caucasian and Mioritic Shepherds… I’d never heard of them either!

We deep dive into the practical aspects of fostering: assessments at the sanctuary, evaluating potential foster parents and the importance of sensible safety measures. Adam also gives advice to anyone wanting to help or set up their own animal rescues.

In a podcast exclusive, we reveal the next big step for The Wholesome Hound - candles! A new range of candles developed in conjunction with Hazel & Blue Candles designed to help reduce anxiety and stress in dogs is being released in the next few weeks. Sarah talks about her experience with the product testing and why she thinks customers will love them.

Do you know the difference between bio-degradable and compostable? No? Then this weeks podcast should be top of your playlist as this week we’re chatting to Adios Plastics - an eco-friendly dog waste bag producer.

Ben, the founder talks us through how the concept was developed and the hurdles he’s had to overcome to get the business up and running. Whether you have a dog or not you’ll want to tune in this week if you have an interest in all things sustainable as we deep dive into plastic use and composting.

It wouldn’t be The Dog Hang podcast if we didn’t also talk about Ben’s dog: Luna the Golden Retriever. We talk about his extra early starts, the joys of owning a puppy and why Ben settled on a Golden Retriever for his first dog.

Naturally, people have misconceptions about the effectiveness of compostable poo bags so we get into the science behind them and answer questions such as: do they smell? Where do you dispose of them? Will they split? We discuss this as well as the potential for owning a wormery and where to locate you compost heat.

If you want to get hold of Ben you can check out the website (www.adiosplastic.co.uk) or reach out on social media using @adiosplastic on Facebook and @adios_plastic Instagram. Adios Plastic offer free samples (postage only 99p) if you want to trial making the switch

Did you know that 20% of the environmental impact of meat production is the result of the pet industry? Neither did we! Todays guest, Ross from Bug Bakes, is on the show to talk about his plans to tackle this issue with the company’s insect protein based dog treats.

If you’re wanting to make lifestyle changes to benefit the environment then this episode is a must listen. With over 500 million pet cats and dogs globally early adopters of making the switch to insect based protein foods could be the vanguard of important change.

We also talk about the face of Bug Bakes, Lyra the Leonberger, who sadly passed away as the business took off. We find out a bit more about the breed - they can put on 9 stone in weight over the 1st year! - and how Ross went from being a hydro-therapy sceptic to a convert.

Finally we chat through Bug Bakes relationship with The Bumble Bee Conservation Trust (https://www.bumblebeeconservation.org/) and the plans for the future of the business including (keep it quiet) the potential for a complete dog food not just treats!

If you’re interested in finding out more you can hit up Ross using @bugbakes on Facebook & Twitter and @bugbakesuk on Instagram. Head over to the website (www.bugbakes.co.uk) for more on how to subscribe and further information on the business ethos. Ross couldn’t say too much on the podcast but there is some exciting TV news coming up in the next few weeks… we’ll be sure to let everyone know about that as soon as we can!

Slumbering Hound is an independent purveyor of bespoke dog accessories, cushions, blankets and more. On this weeks episode we’re joined by Dee, owner of Slumbering Hound, to discuss how the business came to be so successful and of course what she loves about dogs.

Dee has transferred the skills honed in her previous life in television, film and theatre (she’s even worked for the Jim Henson company!) to develop products that now enjoy a dedicated following. In our conversation we discuss how her history of costume making has served Dee so well, where the inspiration for the business came from and what people are generally looking for in their bespoke dog beds!

We also cover the desire to outlaw puppy farms, the issue with dog owners not picking up their dog ‘litter’ and Slumbering Hounds links to charity. Of course, it wouldn’t be The Dog Hang Podcast if we didn’t also discuss Slumbering Hounds resident canine - Aston - a rescue Greyhound that loves to sleep but hates fireworks!

A little shoutout goes out to Kerry from Fur & Fables (www.furandfables.com) who helped with the pictures for Slumbering Hounds new website and the Mayhew Charity whom Dee has worked with over several years.

If you want to get hold of Dee you can check out the website (www.slumberinghound.com) or reach out on social media using @SlumberingHound on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

This week on the podcast we’re joined by Emily, founder of DevilDood Designs and DevilDood Direct. DevilDood originally began selling collars and has since become an online stockist of all things canine with a big social media following.

Emily talks to us about her three dogs Colin (the devildood himself!), Rhapsody & Arnold, how she fell in love with dogs and what drove her to create the business. We find out how the business has grown so quickly in such a short space of time and most importantly we discover what exactly a ‘dood’ is! Clue: it’s not a cool way of spelling dude!

Emily is extremely passionate about educating dog owners on how to care for their pooches and is an avid proponent of ‘Y’ shaped harnesses over chest strap harnesses. We discuss the details of why and how a chest strap harness could potentially be damaging your dogs shoulders. We also take a deeper look into raw feeding (following on from episode 1) and discuss whether or not your canine needs vaccinating each year. The answer might surprise you!

This episode is crammed with little tidbits of information (did you know natural chew treats with the hair left on could be an alternative preventative for worms?) and as a result we over ran slightly. Think of it as nearly half a bonus episode. There was just too much to talk about!

You can reach Emily by email at devildood@hotmail.com but will likely get a quicker response on social media using @devildooddirect & @devildooddesigns on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

As ever please give us a like and subscribe on Spotify and iTunes… we’ll only be able to grow the podcast through word of mouth so every recommendation helps! This week on the podcast we’re joined by Vikki, Chairperson for a charity with a “licence to chill” - Pawsome Pensions. The charity helps with the costs of care for around 35 retired Police and Fire dogs from the Devon, Dorset and Cornwall area.

Vikki had just returned from Woofstock (https://www.woofstockuk.co.uk) and a weekend of fundraising fun. We find out a little about Woofstock and Vikki talks us through her passion for canines (particularly spaniels), how she became a police dog handler and what a day in her life looks like.

We cover some fascinating ground this week with chat about #finnslaw, the thrill of apprehending criminals and the joys of finding a vulnerable missing person. We also talk through dog etiquette and the challenges found in the day to day walking of a trained professional canine. Vikki is gearing up to get her fire arms licence and is hopeful of getting a second dog for drug detection.

Most importantly, perhaps, we find out what happens to Police and Fire dogs at retirement: where they retire to and who looks after them.

If you want to find out more about the charity you can find them online at www.pawsomepensions.org.uk or reach out on @pawsomepensions on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. The website has an online store and donation options as well as contact details on how you can order collection tins and the like.

This week on The Dog Hang Podcast we’re joined by Pam Mackinnon, founder of Talking Dogs (TD) Scentwork. Pam teaches pet owners and their dogs how to form scent detection teams purely for fun! TD Scentwork offers workshops up and down the country with regionally based trainers conducting a curriculum style progression of learning. They’ve also recently launched an online version of the course so you can learn about this fantastic relationship building technique from the comfort of your own home. The online course also provides the option of tailoring content for puppies and seniors so you’re learning the most appropriate methods whatever your dogs age.

In this episode Pam talks about the dogs she’s owned, how she got into scent detection work with Customs & Excise in the mid-80s, what caused her to leave the profession and how she re-discovered her love of working with dogs after a brief hiatus.

We go on to discuss how the idea for TD Scentwork came about, how the course uses abandoned rail yards to up-skill your canine, why speaking ‘dog’ should be taught to all dog owners and her issues with the Dangerous Dogs Act & Electric Shock Collars.

If you’re interested in scent detection work, want to find out what it’s like to work for various agencies (Pam has also worked as a behaviourist for a re-homing charity and with Hearing Dogs) or just want to hear the thoughts of someone with decades of experience training dogs (and humans!) then this is a must listen.

To find out more head over to the Talking Dogs Scentwork website at www.scentwork.com, learn how to scent detect on the online course at www.detectordog.co.uk or reach out to Pam herself using @scentworker on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter.

As always please remember to like and subscribe to the podcast on iTunes & Spotify. We’d really like to get your feedback so make sure you leave comments on those platforms or on our website (www.thedoghang.com) with regards to what we can improve. Last week J.Z.CoachingDogs got in touch on Instagram to request we change the podcast tag line to ensure we’re not promoting ‘switched off’ dog walking… Big shout to out to them for the feedback and hopefully they’ll be happy to see we’ve made the amends!

Welcome to the inaugural Dog Hang podcast! We’ve got a treat for you this week as we’ve been speaking to Megan from The Cotswold Spaniels and her two dogs Woody and Wilma.

Megan is a blogger and photography based in, you guessed it, the Cotswolds. In the podcast we talk about what she loves about dogs, what a typical day looks like for her (spoiler: there is no such thing!) and what she has against chest harnesses.

We also discuss Megans’ crusade to convert more owners to Raw Food Diets, the problems with retractable leads and the importance of micro-chipping.

As you can see we cover a lot of ground! For more information you can check out Megans’ blog at https://thecotswoldspaniels.com and take part in her August Raw Food drive using the hashtag #rawfeedingfortnight on Twitter and Instagram (@thecotswaldspaniels).

It’s the first ever podcast we’ve recorded and we had a few teething issues with the audio quality for which we can only apologise. We’ve done what we can in editing and hopefully it’s not too off-putting. It’s only when I speak, which is too often! Please stick with us… we’ve identified the issue so it won’t happen again. We’ve lots to learn but we’ll be improving as we go along so don’t give up on us!

As this is a new endeavour we’d love to hear your feedback so we can tailor future episodes to the kind of content you want to hear. We’ve little to no experience in podcasting so your reviews will really help us improve what we put out there… you can leave comments on our website: www.thedoghang.com/podcasts, get in touch on social media: twitter - @dog_hang; Instagram/Facebook - @thedoghang or by email at: info@thedoghang.com You can also reach out with future guest suggestions… we’re always on the look-out!

With that said… nows the time to get the lead, head on out the door and get listening!

All the best The Dog Hang
