On today's episode, I break down the brain circuits behind anxiety—the amygdala, hippocampus, prefrontal cortex, and the HPA axis—and show how they create panic, overgeneralization, and sleeplessness. I then explain, in plain terms, why anxiety feels overwhelming and how chronic stress weakens the brain's safety signals.

The episode also outlines practical recovery steps, especially exposure therapy: intentionally facing feared situations, creating prediction errors, and building new safety memories so the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus can override the alarm. It’s a clear roadmap for moving from fear to freedom.

On todays episode, I speak with Dana Hargus founder of Restore of Ada and we discuss trauma-informed approaches to calm the nervous system, biofeedback strategies, and rebuilding resilience after chronic stress. Dana explains how trauma can affect anyone and why treating the body (sleep, gut health, hydration) alongside the brain speeds recovery.

Practical takeaways include Restore of Ada's six-week prep plus a two-week intensive day-treatment with multiple biofeedback sessions, and everyday steps you can start now—consistent sleep, drink water, grounding, reduce screen time, improve nutrition, and small steady changes to reduce anxiety and regain clarity.

Today, I break down why people with health anxiety obsessively check their bodies, how that checking fuels a loop of fear and hyper-awareness, and how intolerance of uncertainty and misinterpreting normal sensations keep the cycle going.

I outline clear, practical steps to break the habit: identify checking behaviors, delay urges, use gradual exposure and acceptance, build internal trust through voluntary discomfort (exercise, cold exposure), and reframe fear into courageous action so anxiety loses its control.

In this episode, I explain depersonalization and derealization—what they feel like, why they happen, and how many people experience emotional numbness, robotic sensations, and feeling detached from their body or surroundings.

I also summarize research showing depersonalization as a protective response to extreme anxiety, the strong link with panic, and how internet catastrophizing and hyper-focus on symptoms make it worse.

Then I offer clear, practical steps to break the cycle: surrender and reframe thoughts, shift attention outward through routines, exercise, mindfulness, journaling, consistent sleep/wake times, and treating depersonalization as harmless background noise so the brain can stop producing it.

On today's episode, I talk about the id, ego, and super-ego, the different parts of the psyche coined by psychologist Sigmund Freud. I then dive into the process of creating a new identity from the fragmented one you are currently playing out. On today's episode, I talk about the many nasty symptoms and sensations triggered by our natural stress response. Some include: nausea, fatigue, racing mind, body zaps, and heart palpitations. The typical person easily misreads these symptoms as something life threatening, but they are a natural occurrence due to our body preparing itself to respond to threat. I hope this shines a light on the anxiety confusion you may have.

On today's episode, I talk about the woke agenda in Hollywood and how this is ruining the spirit of the characters we grew to love. But also, the character archetypes that click with audiences. It is not only the male spirit of Luke Skywalker or Indiana Jones that they are destroying, but the positive feminine spirit of Ray in the Rise of Skywalker or Mulan. When we watch these remakes and sequels, why does it fail to resonate with us? Why does it leave a long lasting bitter aftertaste? Is this the message we want for our younger generation?

On this episode, I talk about 3 of the 6 human needs: certainty, variety, and significance. Certainty is the need for being in familiar territory. Anxiety sufferers are in the unknown (chaos) and seek to make their overwhelming questions answered. Variety (order) is the opposite of certainty. The unknown. This need is to seek out new information. Having too much order or too much chaos is not good, so the mediation of the two is the proper path forward. Then, there is the need for significance. I go over how this dependent need keeps someone trapped in ego (unconsciousness).

On episode #87, I talk about 2 powerful techniques that help you to move forward in your recovery journey. These techniques are: the say it in past-tense technique and the out loud affirmations technique. Why these techniques are so powerful is because they speak directly to the unconscious mind (the 95% of who you are). The first technique (say it in past-tense), allows you to to disassociate yourself from your old anxious identity. The second technique (out loud affirmations), engrains powerful affirmations within your unconscious mind just by speaking them out loud with some emotion behind it. On episode #71, I talk about the statements and phrases anxiety sufferers don't want to hear when battling their mental health challenges. I dig into such phrases such as: "you can't teach a dog new tricks, and just relax you'll be fine." To a health anxiety sufferer, saying that people are unable to change only engrains their belief that they will have to live the rest of their life in this anxious state. When I was told to just relax and calm down, I felt like that person had no idea what I was going through, thus making me feel more alone and fearful. On episode #69 of The Anxiety Project Podcast, I talk about the reasons why you need to overcome your anxiety. If you want to successfully reach the goals you want to obtain, attach pain to not changing and pleasure to change. This will give you the drive to reach them. The more pain you attach to staying in your anxious chaotic state, the more you will push yourself past that pain and towards that ideal person. Then by attaching pleasure to your desired future, such as living more mindfully with your family, the more you will manifest that outcome.

On episode #65 of The Anxiety Project Podcast, I go over a very powerful tool that is necessary for desensitization. Anxiety sufferers continuously avoid situations that make them feel uneasy. The fear of uncertainty can keep an anxiety sufferer trapped in their safe zone. Then they put bandaids over their anxiety such as: medications, alcohol, junk foods, and reassurance. While they avoid those uncomfortable situations, the dragon grows, and by the time they attempt to confront that chaos, the fear is substantially more intense.

On episode #63, I talk bout the fears I had leaving my safe zone and what I did to overcome that challenge. My safe zone became my home while I was suffering from agoraphobia. To overcome my fear of having a health crisis in the outside world and having no one around (family or paramedics) to help me, I had to first start small. Small walks led to longer walks which then led to hours sitting at the coffee shop. The outside world became tolerable the more time I spent in it away from my safe zone. The idea here is to work with your emotional brain and to learn to associate walks away from your comfort zone as safe rather than fearful. You will then become braver and find that the outside world is not as scary as you thought it was.

On episode #62, I go over a typical day, from morning until night, of what it is like to suffer with health anxiety. The morning always hit me the hardest. After I woke up, I would immediately check in on myself and sensations. Then I would ruminate over how awful my day is going to be and make excuses on why I should't leave the house. During the day, I would keep my head down and avoid conversations with others. It was too challenging to engage in meaningful conversations because my internal world kept demanding my attention (the built in alarm was continuously sounding). Then once I got home I would distract my sensations and feelings with band-aids such as the TV. The goal of this podcast is to help you relate to my story and to provide your friends and family with the knowledge of what suffering with health anxiety is really like.

In this podcast episode, I talk about a powerful technique that will help you disassociate yourself from your current anxious identity. I go over my past and how I dealt with anxiety and how I practised anxiety for most of my life. I had a very narrow perspective over the world and the only way I realized that was to experience a severe anxiety disorder. To help me move toward the person I want to be, confident, mindful, and brave, I used techniques to help me move farther and father away from that anxious guy. I talk about the "I used to be" technique to help me do that. This technique, practised over a long period of time, shifts how you view your identity and helps kick the legs out of the table that is holding up your poor beliefs.

On episode #60 of The Anxiety Project Podcast, I talk about why anxiety sufferers are so sensitive to the word cancer. We receive 2 million bits of information from our external world every second. A health anxiety sufferer can distort, delete, and generalize this information to suit their anxious identity. They may perceive and blow up a natural bodily sensation as being life threatening, or unconsciously ignore information that doesn't suite their current values or beliefs. When a health anxiety hears someone mention a life threatening disease, they become alert and concerned because they believe to be unhealthy themselves. I also talk about how health anxiety sufferers can lesson their emotional reaction to the word cancer and live a more stress free lifestyle.

On episode #59 of The Anxiety Project Podcast, I talk about journaling and how much it impacted my anxiety recovery and my life. The old me was weak minded, and could never commit to something that required hard work and discipline. That resistance did show up when I began to journal, but i felt and witnessed the amazing benefits unfold. Journaling allowed me to be open about the catastrophic thoughts I had daily, and more importantly, I became honest towards myself. Anxiety sufferers tend to hide from and avoid the harsh truth. Writing your true thoughts down allows you to be more honest with yourself and your situation. In this podcast I go over how to structure your journal and why you need to start journaling today. This powerful exercise will lesson your anxiety and add more order to the chaos you are now experiencing in your life.

2020 is the year to prove your old self wrong. On this podcast episode I talk about the challenges you need to confront in order to overcome anxiety. Recovery is a long term game, and it requires facing situations that you do not want to face. Pain is necessary for growth and strengthening the mind. The challenges I talk about in this episode are: avoiding negative friends and add positive models, meditate daily, stop reassurance seeking, and seek out challenges for growth. These are very important because they shift your character, your identity, and make you stronger mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually.

When there is a long list of to-dos and many holiday get togethers to attend, you may feel like avoiding them because of your high levels of anxiety. It is important that you don't avoid them. You need to be continually placing yourself in uncomfortable scenarios in order to strengthen the mind and create new neuronal pathways. The holiday season is the perfect time to challenge old limiting thought patterns and to place yourself in situations you have avoided in the past. The new you finds self growth in these situations rather than dread and despair. On episode #56, I talk about a technique that lessons your sensitivity to high panic and high anxious situations. The technique is flooding. Flooding is when you place yourself in a high anxiety situation and you ride the wave (give in and surrender to the sensations) of panic. It is important to not avoid the places that make you feel iffy because you are only strengthening your fear to that situation. By flooding, you are desensitizing your fear of the situation and thus strengthening and stimulating a new neuro pathway that now promotes safety rather than dread. You have to activate to generate.

On this episode of The Anxiety Project Podcast, I go over the part of the brain that initiates the anxiety response, the amygdala. The amygdala, when activated, prepares the body to flight, fight, or freeze. When doing so, there is an increase in cortisol and adrenaline within the body, which then creates a wide range of anxiety symptoms. Some symptoms include: shallow depth of field, racing heart, perspiration, and shallow breathing. These symptoms of anxiety can be misinterpreted as being life threatening, which then makes your anxiety spiral out of control. When we look at these symptoms as being a natural defensive response produced from the amygdala, we then lesson the impact of the anxiety we experience. In this episode, I go over the amygdala and its response to perceived threats, as well as how we can use the amygdala to better control our anxiety.

On episode #54, I talk about depersonalization and the reason why we experience it when going through anxiety and trauma. Depersonalization can make you fearful over your state of mind (the thought of going crazy) because it can make you feel detached from yourself, like you are in 3rd person. Also, you may feel like you cannot get a grip over your thoughts and physical actions. When I experienced depersonalization, I felt like I had no balance and I was extremely light headed. In this podcast, I go over the causes of depersonalization and what you can do to get rid of it.

On this episode of The Anxiety Project Podcast, I talk about the day I started my anxiety recovery journey. Leading up to that day, I was living a very sensitized and chaotic lifestyle. With no goals and living without a purpose, I was continually catastrophizing over the bodily sensations I was feeling daily. I kept spiralling down deeper into despair. When I found some answers online that day, a huge paradigm shift occurred. "Maybe I don't have a physical illness, maybe it is all in my head," I thought. The goal of this episode is so that you can relate your own experiences with anxiety to my own experiences with anxiety. When you find out that you are not alone, it can be a huge relief.

On episode #52 of The Anxiety Project Podcast, I go over role models and why finding the right role models is necessary for anxiety recovery. You act out and absorb the beliefs of those people you spend the majority of your time with. It is important to continually surround yourself with role models that promote self growth and guide you through the recovery process. People who are disciplined and have a developing mind-set, are great role models. Anxiety recovery can be very challenging and changing who you are is not easy, but having proper role models is necessary for reaching your goals. You learn how to handle failure from them, you learn what not to do when panic strikes, and you learn how to live an empowering lifestyle. The more you subject yourself to the right role models, the more you unconsciously become like them.

On this episode, I go over my top 5 worst anxiety symptoms from when I used to suffer from an anxiety disorder. People who suffer from anxiety all experience similar symptoms, but everyone tends to react more strongly to certain symptoms than others. The objective of this podcast episode is to get you familiar with the many symptoms and sensations caused by anxiety, so that you can begin perceiving them differently. When you perceive that dizziness, heart palpitation, or body zap as been life threatening, you snowball that anxiety into full blown panic. If you look at your sensations as being natural and common, then your anxiety will not snowball out of control.

On episode #50, I talk about the 2 mind-sets: the set mind, and the developing mind. Having a set mind-set is having a very narrow view of the world. You speak as if you are capable of change, but never progress forward and change. This was my old self in a nutshell. Deep down, I believed that I was not strong enough to change. The developing mind-set is someone who understands that life is all about constant and never ending improvement towards oneself. To continuously learn and challenge yourself. This mindset is necessary for living a happy and fulfilling life.

On episode #49, I break down habits and how they can be used effectively to improve our anxiety and overall lifestyle. I used to engage in multiple bad habits that kept me in an anxious limited state. I go over the many negative habits anxiety sufferers do daily so that you can relate and become conscious of them. Once we recognize the habits that keep us back from living a fulfilling life, we then can work on new powerful habits to replace the old limiting ones. Like a computer, if we do not update our software, we end up crashing. Pay attention to your habits, they run us unconsciously and they create who we are. We are what we repeatedly do.

On episode #48 of The Anxiety Project Podcast, I talk about the reasons why I take cold showers. Cold showers have been apart of my routine for the last year and a half. They have had a strong positive impact on my overall health and wellbeing. First, cold showers add discipline into my life. I become mentally stronger. To step under that water, you have to fight through all those negative thoughts and excuses on why you shouldn't do it. When you do overcome those limiting thoughts and step under the cold water, you feel empowered and capable of handling any challenge that comes your way. Second, cold showers improves your immune health. You take deep breaths which oxenergizes the body making the blood more alkaline and thus releasing excess CO2. Also, cold showers improves heart, hair, and skin health. Like Wim Hof (The Iceman) says, "Feeling is understanding."

On episode #46 of The Anxiety Project Podcast, I go over our deepest level of programming, the unconscious mind. The unconscious makes up 95% of our mind/body, and the last 5% is our conscious mind. I talk about these and many other functions of the unconscious mind as well as why it is important to use the unconscious as your best friend when going through anxiety recovery.

I was faced with many realizations when going through my anxiety recovery. When I reached my lowest point, suffering from severe health anxiety, I desperately sought out help. My whole world opened up as soon as I got myself knowledgable about why I felt so anxious. I used to live with a very narrow mind. In this podcast episode, I go over my top 3 biggest realizations when going through my anxiety journey. Realizations that opened up my eyes to the bigger picture. To what really is going on. Why am I feeling this anxiety? Why do I believe to be unhealthy when in fact the doctor says I am healthy? Why do I feel like I am going crazy? These were all questions I was asking when struggling through an anxiety disorder. As soon as I began getting myself knowledgable about my anxiety, the more it opened up my mind to what really was going on.

I talk about being too dependent on others on this weeks episode of The Anxiety Project Podcast. While going through difficult life challenges, you may hold onto those around you that provide you with the reassurance that you so desperately want to hear. Is this healthy? It only strengthens your fear of the challenges you continue to avoid, and it strengthens your relationship with your safe zone which is also not good. Being too dependent on your safe zone or others around you just limits your own true voice. Your perception of the world may be limited, and so you keep clinging to those that provide you with the love and support you think you need to get by. This only continues to strengthen your identity of being an anxious and weak person. Also, when you attempt to move away from the old you, you are met with reassurance, and so, you go back to your old ways of being. I go over how you can move away from this dependent You towards a more independent and confident You.

This weeks podcast episode is all about values. Values come from the deepest part of us, the unconscious mind. The unconscious has many functions such as: storing memories, storing repressed memories, and running us on autopilot. The patterns and habits that we run daily are being automated by the unconscious. The thing is, our unconscious mind may be running bad habits that serve us poorly. When we introduce new positive patterns that benefit our higher self, we begin to automate those new habits after 21 days of consistent practise. We shift our identity, we shift are values. Model after those that have been through the same life challenge as you and have overcome it. Do what they did. Learn what they do now that keep them in that strong and confident frame of mind.

They are: resisting anything that is in conflict with your current way of thinking, resisting anything that goes against how you think other people will view you, and resisting anything that comes in conflict with your view of the world. Anxiety recovery is all about progressing towards a new you. You have to step into the unknown and add new powerful habits into your life. There are many bad coping strategies people use in order to keep their anxiety from going haywire. Using these strategies only makes your anxiety worse because now you are dependent on these strategies for safety and also your avoiding the fears you don't want to confront. Some bad coping habits include: touching parts of your body, drugs, alcohol, and junk foods. To be specific, they are: avoidance, too much time at home, checking Dr. Google, and seeking reassurance. These new habits are things that you are not accustomed to - so of course it will be challenging to do them on a consistent basis - but its important that you do it. On this podcast episode, I talk about how progress in anxiety recovery can lead to happiness. When we don't face the dragon of chaos and decide to hide away, we only end up living in fear. When you are able to face an environment where you previously experienced a panic attack, you are facing the dragon, and proving your old self wrong. You survive, you don't run away, and then you strengthen a new pathway in the brain. You stepped into uncertainty and came out the other side, alive. Happiness is when you can prove to yourself that you are not so dependant, but more courageous and more powerful that you thought you were.

On episode #30 of The Anxiety Project Podcast, I go over three things you must do in order to mold the new you. Anxiety recovery is all about creating a new identity and subtracting the old habits and patterns you used to run on a daily basis that kept your anxiety alive and your self worth low. To improve the quality of your life, you must expose yourself to new situations and patterns. I see people who are in their 60's running the same patterns as they would when they were 18 years old. People need to update their software, which is their beliefs and values, in order to change the way they act in the world. Once you change your internal world, then your external world changes.

The three techniques are: a strong morning routine, reducing your speed, and the elastic band. It takes 30 days for a new pattern to become consistent in a persons life so make sure you do these on a daily basis. These techniques will be foreign at first, even difficult to get into because your subconscious will not like the change, but it is important that you do it.

On episode 28 of The Anxiety Project Podcast, I talk about some of the biggest negative habits anxiety sufferers run on a daily basis that continuously hold them back. The habits I go over are: poor physiology, hanging out with negative friends, too much Youtube and TV, giving the negatives energy, and constantly avoiding challenges. Once we can recognize the habits we unconsciously run on a daily basis, we can start shifting our perspective over them, and break the cycle that keeps you stuck in anxiety.

Our subconscious mind runs on habits and it loves familiarity. Breaking bad habits that keep you running the same anxious patterns daily in your life is crucial for overcoming anxiety. In this episode I go over the 3 reasons why you remain in constant misery. The first is that you constantly point out what you DON'T want in life. The second reason is you continuously magnify the BAD and not the GOOD. The third reason is that you are NOT updating your checklist. I go into all three of these reasons and break them down so that you have a better understanding of why you feel stuck in anxiety. Agoraphobia is the fear of places and/or situations that may make you feel trapped, anxious, helpless, and embarrassed. On this episode, I dive into Agoraphobia and what it is like to experience this type of anxiety disorder. There are ways to overcome Agoraphobia such as: systematic desensitization and rhythmic breathing patterns and I go over them in detail on this podcast episode. People who suffer from Agoraphobia tend to avoid the places that cause them panic, thus growing that very fear bigger and bigger until they are unable to leave their house. It is crucial to not run away from an environment when panic begins to strike because you are then telling your nervous system that this place, and similar places like it, are deadly and should be avoided.

On this episode of The Anxiety Project Podcast, I talk about the beginning of my anxiety recovery and what I started to do in order to detach myself from my old anxious self. I finally had enough of dealing with my severe health anxiety and living my life sensitized to everything around me. I decided to not live another day like this. I made the decision to educate myself on the what I was actually going through. I found influencers online who provided me with the tools and techniques I needed to overcome the challenges I was facing. The people that I decided to model after were people who went through the same challenges I went though and overcame them naturally. When I became completely dissatisfied with how my life was, change began to occur. When change began to occur, I was met with resistance. When I was met with resistance, I did not run away from the feelings but started perceiving them differently. I started looking at them in a more empowering manor. Remember to never run away from the fire, but to run towards it.

On this episode of The Anxiety Project Podcast I go over hyperventilation and physiology and how it contributes to your anxiety. Shallow breathing is a main contributor to the many sensations you are feeling such as: dizziness, yawning, sighing, and chest pains. I describe simple but effective breathing techniques to implement 3 times a day to improve your overall health and to help reduce anxiety. Also, I go over power poses and how this simple technique can set you up for the day. Your physiology controls your psychology, remember that.

You first get placed with social labels, then placed with an identity, you have an idea of who you are, you feel a sense of significance, and then you feel a sense of belonging. Anxiety is practised. I practised anxiety since I was a little boy. To know the causes of your anxiety disorder means to go back to your childhood. That 10-year-old child is still screaming inside you and you are still walking around each day giving that child attention. It's time to say no more.

On this episode, I will describe another anxiety story of mine. I go back to my experiences being in public places such as: operas, symphonies, movie theatres, and having panic attacks during my time at these places. It is important to know why you are experiencing this panic, which may seem out of the blue, and the parts of your brain that are involved in triggering this panic.

One bad habit can snowball into another. The subconscious loves habits and when we start to adopt new empowering habits into our lives, we will experience resistance to this change. It is important to recognize the current bad habits in you life such as: negative friends, television, junk foods, and to start going against that pull. When we replace a bad habit with a good habit and practice it day-by-day, remarkable changes start to occur.

Popular thinking is going with the norm. Automatically accepting other peoples opinions and ways of thinking can influence your own thinking and identity. It is important to adopt your own way of thinking and to put yourself in uncomfortable situations so that you can create a new empowering identity. When we start using our rational thinking and begin challenging what others say or think, we are then going against the grain of popular thinking.

On this episode, I discuss what your symptoms of health anxiety (hypochondria) could mean and how to face them. The subconscious mind/body, meaning the mind and body are both connected, store past traumas and experiences, that haven't been dealt with yet, somewhere in your body. This can cause body zaps, heart palpitations and pains (plus many other sensations). I go over how we can start looking at your many sensations in a different way.

I discuss handling a panic attack the right way. They are scary and and very overwhelming. If you ride the wave of panic and resist the urge to run away or call up a loved one, then you have already began inner change. If you can start facing your fears head on, then you can start rewiring your brain. It is about proving to your subconscious that the environment you are in is safe and not dangerous, thus activating the rational mind in us rather than the irrational mind.

An anxiety sufferer has no control over their negative thinking. There is no conscious guard in your mind that provides rational facts toward the negative thoughts that pop in. I discuss the ways we can start taking control over our minds, and lesson the amount of negative thinking that we encounter daily. Remember, when we give those negative thoughts emotion, we entertain them.

These two skills, yes I said skills, are important to implement daily. When you start controlling your physiology, you control your psychology. These are the keys to help you stay grounded and in tune with the present moment. If you want to be a warrior, act like one, then you will start to believe you are one. An important and powerful podcast.

I hold this topic near and dear to my heart because I have had health anxiety my entire life. I remember when I was in grade 7 feeling a little lump under my jawline and thinking "Im dying." I even phoned up my mom concerned on what it may be. It would consume my thinking for the entire day. This is health anxiety.

Now, if you are like my old self, unable to leave the house because of this debilitating anxiety, then you know how painful it can be. I was confused, running on no sleep, and completely overcome by this feeling of hopelessness. I was unable to walk one block from my house before shaking into a panic state and then running back home scared of the sensations.

To overcome Health Anxiety was the biggest challenge for me. The symptoms I was experiencing such as; lower back pain, discomfort while urination, lower stomach pains, headaches, and blurred vision, were all caused by ANXIETY. I never had what I thought I had. The reasons I had these symptoms was because of my anxiety and the emotions I haven't dealt with yet.

Now when I say emotions i haven't dealt with yet, I mean our bodies store information that cause physical sensations. For example: When I think back on an embarrassing moment in my life that causes me grief, I will then feel that certain sensation somewhere on my body whether its my chest, lower back, head, and neck. Another common sensation is the lump in the throat feeling which a lot of anxiety sufferers get as well. The sensation's make us believe something is wrong and we constantly pay attention to the sensation for days. But if it doesn't go away, it must be something serious right?

Wrong. I kept thinking about this pain in my right side for days and days but it wouldn't disappear. I was giving it attention, thus, keeping the sensation alive. So how do you take your mind off of it and get over health anxiety?
