Dr. Sarah Jean Barton is a theologian and occupational therapist with a Doctor of Theology degree from Duke Divinity School. She completed her occupational therapy training at Boston University. Her research interests include theology and disability, research in collaboration with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, bioethics, liturgy, and occupational engagement in religious activities. She has published and presented in a variety of interdisciplinary contexts on issues related to Christian theology and ethics, intellectual disability, spirituality, disability studies, and occupational therapy. She is the author of Becoming the Baptized Body: Disability and the Practice of Christian Community (Baylor University Press).
Currently, Dr. Barton is Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy and Theological Ethics at Duke University. She holds a dual appointment in the Occupational Therapy Doctorate Division in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the School of Medicine as well as at Duke Divinity School. She also works as a pediatric occupational therapist at Duke Health, with special expertise in collaborating with families and children experiencing medical complexity, trauma, or neuromuscular disorders. Dr. Barton is one of only seven occupational therapists in North Carolina to hold the AOTA Board Certification in Pediatrics.

This book seeks to elevate the discourse in the church beyond hospitality to immigrants. Many Christians have good intentions, working hard to welcome immigrants with hospitality and solidarity. But how can that be done in a way that empowers our immigrant neighbours rather than pushing them to the fringes of white-dominant culture and keeping them as outsiders?

Today we welcome The Rev. Dr. Danielle Tumminio Hansen. Dr. Tumminio Hansen joined the Candler School of Theology in 2021. Prior to arriving at Candler, she was assistant professor of pastoral theology and served as director of field education at Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas, where she taught courses on trauma, practical theology, and pastoral theology, with a feminist, intersectional, and anti-racist lens. She is the author of several works in practical theology, namely Conceiving Family: A Practical Theology of Surrogacy and Self, as well as God and Harry Potter at Yale. Mary is the Patron Saint of Mexico and Patroness of the Americas. Every year, thousands of people from all over the country make a pilgrimage to the Basilica in Mexico City. The day commemorates the apparition of our Lady of Guadalupe to Saint Juan Diego in the hills of Tepeyac in 1531. She appeared as an Indian maiden dressed like an Aztec princess. The lady spoke to him in his own language She asked him to go to the bishop and tell him that the Ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of God, sent him to ask for a church to be built atop Tepeyac hill.
Mary’s appearance to Juan Diego as one of his people is a powerful reminder that Mary—and the God who sent her—accept all peoples. In the context of the sometimes rude and cruel treatment of the Indians by the Spaniards, the apparition was a rebuke to the Spaniards and an event of vast significance for the indigenous population. Our Lady of Guadalupe cries out to us that God’s love for and identification with the poor is an age-old truth that stems from the Gospel itself.
In celebration of today's feast, we welcome The Rev. Dr. Robert Chao Romero. Dr. Chao is "Asian-Latino," and has been a professor of Chicana/o Studies and Asian American Studies at UCLA since 2005. Robert is also an attorney having studied at Berkeley. Romero has published 15 academic books and articles on issues of race, immigration, history, education, and religion, and received the Latina/o Studies book award from the international Latin American Studies Association. Robert is an ordained pastor. Together with his wife Erica, he is the co-founder of Jesus 4 Revolutionaries, a Christian ministry to activists, as well as the co-chair of the Matthew 25 Movement in Southern California.

She is the author of Womanist Midrash: A Reintroduction to Women of the Torah and of the Throne, numerous commentaries and co-editor of The Peoples’ Bible and The Peoples’ Companion to the Bible. She is also the author of a Women’s Lectionary for the Whole Church and translator of its biblical selections; the first two volumes, Year A and W were published in August 2021. Volumes B and C are due in 2023 and 2024. She is currently writing the second volume of Womanist Midrash focusing on women in the Prophets. Dr. Gafney is an Episcopal priest canonically resident in the Diocese of Pennsylvania and licensed in the Diocese of North Texas. She is a former Army chaplain and congregational pastor in the AME Zion Church. Dr Gafney has co-taught courses with and for the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Seminary in Wyncote, PA.

A religious scholar, author, and ordained minister, De Le Torre was born in Cuba months before the Castro Revolution. He and his family migrated to the United States as refugees when he was an infant. He had a successful real estate business and at one point ran for state legislature under the Republican banner. Dr. De La Torre walked away from that life to study theology. He is an ordained minister with a Ph.D. in social ethics from Temple University his writing focuses on ethics within contemporary U.S. thought, specifically how religion affects race, class, and gender oppression.
Dr De La Torre has authored numerous articles and over 40 books,. He’s released six this year alone.

This manifesto is an evangelical book reaching out to and seeking the salvation of people of colour who carry the weight of indignity, whose very humanity has been denied by whiteness. And if by chance those who are melanin-challenged, those who have also lost their own humanity by depriving humanness to those on their margins, were to discover their own salvation, then fine. De la Torre says he will celebrate this unintended consequence.

Growing up in a strict, fundamentalist church in the southern USA, a young Philip Yancey tended to view God as “a scowling Supercop, searching for anyone who might be having a good time—in order to squash them.” Yancey jokes today about being “in recovery” from a toxic church. “Of course, there were good qualities too. If a neighbour’s house burned down, the congregation would rally around and show charity—if, that is, the house belonged to a white person. I grew up confused by the contradictions. We heard about love and grace, but I didn’t experience much. And we were taught that God answers prayers, miraculously, but my father died of polio just after my first birthday, despite many prayers for his healing.”
For Yancey, reading offered a window to a different world. So, he devoured books that opened his mind, challenged his upbringing, and went against what he had been taught. A sense of betrayal engulfed him. “I felt I had been lied to. For instance, what I learned from a book like To Kill a Mockingbird or Black Like Me contradicted the racism I encountered in church. I went through a period of reacting against everything I was taught and even discarding my faith. I began my journey back mainly by encountering a world very different than I had been taught, an expansive world of beauty and goodness. Along the way, I realized that God had been misrepresented to me. Cautiously, warily, I returned, circling around the faith to see if it might be true.”
Ever since, Yancey has explored the most basic questions and deepest mysteries of the Christian faith, taking millions of readers with him. Early on he crafted best-selling books such as Disappointment with God and Where is God When it Hurts? while also editing The Student Bible. He co-authored three books with the renowned surgeon Dr. Paul Brand. “No one has influenced me more,” he says. “We had quite a trade: I gave words to his faith, and in the process, he gave faith to my words.” More recently, he has felt the freedom to explore central issues of the Christian faith, penning award-winning titles such as The Jesus I Never Knew, What’s So Amazing About Grace? and Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference? His books have garnered 13 Gold Medallion Awards from Christian publishers and booksellers. He currently has more than 15 million books in print, published in over 50 languages worldwide.
Yancey worked as a journalist in Chicago for some twenty years, editing the youth magazine Campus Life while also writing for a wide variety of magazines including Reader’s Digest, Saturday Evening Post, National Wildlife, and Christianity Today. In the process, he interviewed diverse people enriched by their personal faith, such as President Jimmy Carter, Habitat for Humanity founder Millard Fuller, and Dame Cicely Saunders, founder of the modern hospice movement. In 1992 he and his wife Janet, a social worker and hospice chaplain, moved to the foothills of Colorado. His writing took a more personal, introspective turn even as his activities turned outward. “Writing is such an introspective act that I found myself looking for ways to connect with the planet bodily. My interests include skiing, climbing mountains, mountain-biking, golf, international travel, jogging, nature, theology (in small doses), politics, literature, and classical music.”

Kate Bowler, PhD is a New York Times bestselling author, podcast host, and professor at Duke University. A prize-winning historian and Emmy Award nominee, Randall Balmer earned the Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1985 and taught as Professor of American Religious History at Columbia University for twenty-seven years before becoming the Mandel Family Professor in the Arts & Sciences at Dartmouth College in 2012; two years later, he was named Dartmouth Professor in the Arts & Sciences, and in 2015 he was named to the John Phillips Chair in Religion, the oldest endowed professorship at Dartmouth. In 2014, he was named the inaugural director of the Society of Fellows at Dartmouth. He has been a visiting professor at Princeton, Yale, Northwestern, and Emory universities and in the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. He was a visiting professor at Yale Divinity School from 2004 to 2008.
Dr. Balmer has published widely in both scholarly journals and in the popular press. His op-ed articles have appeared in newspapers across the country, including the Los Angeles Times, the Des Moines Register, the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Dallas Morning News, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Hartford Courant, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the Anchorage Daily News, and the New York Times. His work has also appeared in the New Republic, the New York Times Book Review, Christian Century, the Nation, the Chronicle of Higher Education, and Washington Post Book World. Dr. Balmer is regularly asked to comment on religion in American life, and he has appeared frequently on network television, on NPR, and on both the Colbert Report and the Daily Show, with Jon Stewart. He has been an expert witness in several First Amendment cases, including Snyder v. Phelps and Glassroth v. Moore, the so-called Alabama Ten Commandments case.
Dr. Balmer has published more than a dozen books, including Redeemer: The Life of Jimmy Carter and The Making of Evangelicalism: From Revivalism to Politics and Beyond. His second book, Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory: A Journey into the Evangelical Subculture in America, now in its fifth edition, was made into an award-winning, three-part documentary for PBS. Dr. Balmer wrote and hosted that series as well as a two-part series on creationism and a documentary on Billy Graham. He has lectured around the country in such venues as the Commonwealth Club of California and the Chautauqua Institution and, under the auspices of the State Department, in Austria and Lebanon.

Drew E. Jackson is a poet who came late to writing poetry, although he would say that his love for the art form began with hip-hop, learning to put words together from Nas’ Illmatic. He writes at the intersection of justice, peace, and contemplation, having a passion to contribute toward a more just and whole world.
Born in Williamstown, NJ, Drew currently calls New York City home. He holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Chicago and an M.A. in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary. While he’s not traversing the world of poetry, Drew spends his time pastoring Hope East Village, a church that he planted in March of 2018. Drew also serves as the President of Pax, an organization focused on promoting the peace of Jesus in the 21st century.

Chanda Prescod -Weinstein is an Assistant Professor of Physics and Core Faculty Member in Women’s Studies at the University of New Hampshire, and like anyone, she has an origin story and a mission. She is a monthly columnist at New Scientist and a contributing columnist at Physics World. Her personal story and ideas have been featured in several venues, including Tech Crunch, Huffington Post, Gizmodo, Nylon, and the African-American Intellectual History Society.
On March 15, 2017, she received the 2017 LGBT+ Physicists Acknowledgement of Excellence Award “For Years of Dedicated Effort in Changing Physics Culture to be More Inclusive and Understanding Toward All Marginalized Peoples.”

Michael Edward Akpata was born in Edmonton, Alberta and spent his childhood years living in Red Deer, Alberta until moving to Ontario and settling in LaSalle in 2007. He is a University of Windsor graduate, public speaker and accomplished community leader.
Mike is currently a Councilor in the Town of Lasalle. Mike had a lengthy career in public service that included 21 years with the Windsor Police Service as a Senior Constable in Investigations and 26 years as a Canadian Infantry Reservist with the Essex and Kent Scottish, deployed to Afghanistan in 2007.
Over the past 20 years, Mike has devoted countless hours to community groups and charities in addition to raising a family and progressing in his career.
In May 2010 Mike became the Provincial Sergeant Major for the Ontario Police Memorial. This annual event remembers and honours those who have died in uniform while serving their community, each May at Queen’s Park in Toronto, Ontario.
Mike has proudly accepted the role of being the key note speaker for the Canadian Citizenship and Immigration Ceremonies in Windsor since 2012. Rev. Dr. Yolanda Pierce is Professor and Dean of the Howard University School of Divinity in Washington, DC. She is the first woman to be appointed as Dean in the Divinity School’s 150-year history. In 2016, Pierce served as the Founding Director of the Center for African American Religious Life at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). Previously, she served as the Founding Director of the Center for Black Church Studies and Associate Professor of Religion and Literature at Princeton Theological Seminary. Pierce holds degrees from Cornell University and Princeton University.
Pierce’s research specialties include African American Religious History; Womanist Theology; African American Literature; and Race and Religion. A widely-published author, her work focuses on the historical and contemporary significance of the African American religious tradition. Pierce has written over 50 critical essays and articles in academic and trade journals which consider the relationship between religious faith, race, and gender in the American context. You can find her work in a wide variety of publications, including: Time Magazine; Christian Century; Theology Today; and Christianity & Literature.
Pierce is the creator and curator of “Touching the Sacred,” an exhibit on material religion and the Black Church. She is a member of various professional organizations, including the Modern Language Association, the American Academy of Religion, and the American Historical Association. Pierce has been the recipient of numerous honours and awards, including fellowships from the Ford Foundation, the Mellon Foundation, and the Pew Foundation. In 2015, she was honoured to be selected as one of The Root 100 Most Influential African Americans.
In addition to her teaching and academic scholarship, Yolanda Pierce is a dedicated mentor, community activist, board member of a foster care agency, and cable news commentator. She maintains a public intellectual presence through her blogs and frequent appearances on television and radio. She believes that teaching and scholarship are meaningful only if they truly enhance people’s daily lives, thus she works tirelessly to bridge the gaps between pulpit, pew, and academy. A member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Sorority, Inc., and a native New Yorker, Pierce was raised in the Church of God in Christ and still maintains a close connection to her Pentecostal roots.

Kathy is the mother of three. Wife of one. She loves Jesus. She really, really likes yoga & deep breaths, nail polish & lipstick, and girlfriends & our laughter and tears.
She is a writer, speaker, coffee drinker, and now yoga teacher, and this journey began in childhood diaries & journals, moved into newsrooms, and then to a co-authored book entitled More Than Serving Tea. The book is about the intersection of faith, culture and gender, and it tells just part of an important story of Asian American Christian women.
The title of the book tells as much about the content as it does about Kathy. It connects the hope of “more” to that of a stereotypical image of both “Asian” as represented by the West – submissive servant – and “women” as represented by the West, the East, and by some interpretations of Biblical womanhood. She still serves others, enjoys tea (prefers coffee), embraces her complex ethnic/cultural/racial identity and her womanhood, all the while loving Jesus while living and leading in an imperfect world.
Kathy had spent more than 20 years in parachurch ministry working with college students and training organizations and church leaders. Before that, she was a journalist in Wisconsin.
Most recently Kathy authored Raise Your Voice: Why We Stay Silent and How to Speak Up to challenge and encourage everyone to find and use their influence to bring about the Kingdom of God on earth as it is in heaven.

Ayodeji Malcolm Guite is an English poet, singer-songwriter, Anglican priest, and academic. Born in Nigeria to British expatriate parents, Guite earned degrees from Cambridge and Durham universities. His research interests include the intersection of religion and the arts, and the examination of the works of J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis, and British poets. He is currently a Bye-Fellow and retired chaplain of Girton College, Cambridge and associate chaplain of St Edward King and Martyr in Cambridge. On several occasions, he has taught as visiting faculty at several colleges and universities in England and North America. Guite is the author of five books of poetry, including two chapbooks and three full-length collections, as well as several books on Christian faith and theology. On this episode we welcome ERIN DAVIS - Originally from Edmonton, Erin is a radio broadcaster and was the popular, long-time co-host of 98.1 CHFI’s morning show in Toronto. She’After Lauren’s death, Erin decided to return to her radio work, staying on for eighteen months. At that point, she chose to retire from daily radio and moved with her husband, Rob Whitehead, to Victoria, BC.
Her memoir, Mourning Has Broken: Love, Loss & Reclaiming Joy, was released in February of 2019 to critical acclaim and became a bestseller, finishing the year in the Top 10 for non-fiction.
In 2020, Erin was named to the Canadian Music & Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame.

He has lived and worked from Vancouver BC to Gander NL and understands firsthand the unique issues that face our Canadian society. Pastor Dan believes that every person deserves a reasonable quality of life and he is excited to teach people how to live a more balanced and intentional life! His recent initiative, The Urban Haven Project opened over 3 years ago in a high-crime, generationally-marginalized area of London, ON called Soho. Urban Haven offers an opportunity for dignity and hope for those who are struggling in a marginalized lifestyle through offering a daily meal program as well as a variety of services that included providing clothing and food to the poor, counseling, life skills and employability skills programs, art, social outings, and shelter program to those in need.
The project is operated through private donations and championed by over 30 dedicated volunteers made up of various Christian denominations of retired nurses, teachers, police officers, social workers and other professionals! They are housed in the historic Beth Emanuel Church in London, ON.

He’s a 53-year-old divorced dad of two adult children who make their pops incredibly proud. Gerry has lived here in London Ontario for over 40 years. (an interesting turn of phrase for a guy with no legs) Gerry lost both legs due to diabetes, He suffers from anxiety at times, he’s had a nearly fatal heart attack and attempted suicide.

Pam Cullen has been the Executive Director and Chaplain at the London Community Chaplaincy for the last 3.5 years. As the chaplaincy Pam is busy supporting residents with advocacy needs, developing new programs, overseeing the staff and fundraising and her favourite….planning parties and celebration! This past 2 weeks she has piloted her 1st Iftar parties to celebrate Ramadan with the Muslim residents. Pam is an ordained pastor with the Canadian Baptists of Ontario and Quebec has served as a community pastor in both Mississauga and London. An interesting claim to fame, Pam once bought a house, sold a house, moved cities and had a baby all in the same weekend! Pam spends most of her after work hours driving her children to their busy swim team and ice skating practices. When she can fit it in, Pam is working on her own swimming endurance and is hoping to try an open water 1 Km swim race this summer. To relax, Pam and her family are heading to PEI in July and are looking forward to that trip together which includes the grandparents!

Kasia Kalarus is a spiritual seeker who is always looking for opportunities to grow and learn, exploring large existential questions on a daily basis. While she doesn’t like the label, she is a millennial. Kasia was born in Poland and raised in Canada, from age 3, in a European Roman Catholic which was where her spiritual journey began. She now heavily explores her spiritually on an almost daily basis. Kasia is very well read and counts writings from many faith traditions as influencers. She wholeheartedly believes that peace and love are a result of exploring and cultivating compassionate understanding. Kasia tries hard to live all aspects of her life bearing that in mind.
Kasia has spent 9 years working as a nurse in a variety of environments from veterans care, spinal and brain injury rehab, and the emergency department to the job that she now has and loves which is diabetes and chronic disease education. There is no doubt that her spirituality has a profoundly positive impact on her work.
