Commitment is on the mind. Tyler breaks down the triangular theory of love after Chase explains some marital struggles his friends are facing. Tyler shares a few examples of each type of love and how it works throughout a relationship in phases. Chase shares a stellar homemade joke.

The Triangular Theory of Love was developed by psychologist Robert Sternberg in the 1980s. According to the theory, love comprises three main components: intimacy, passion, and commitment. Intimacy encompasses feelings of closeness, trust, and emotional connection with another person. Passion involves the physical attraction and sexual desire that individuals experience towards their partners. Commitment refers to the decision to maintain a long-term relationship and work through challenges together. Sternberg suggests that different combinations of these three components can result in different types of love, such as infatuation, romantic love, and companionate love. The Triangular Theory of Love has been influential in the study of relationships and has helped to deepen our understanding of the complex nature of love.

Tyler has a special gift of being able to tell someone about their weakness (verbal slap) and then encourage (verbal hug) them afterward. It's both painful and rewarding to experience, 😂. Chase has been struggling with a certain relationship that he wants to help nurture in the right way but he has uncertainty about how to approach it. He asks Tyler about his thoughts on how to do this in his own life and when is the right time to make that effort.

Tyler refers to principles in a really great book called "The Anatomy of Peace" by the Arbinger Institute. This book is definitely worth the read if you aren't already familiar with it.

Did you know Curiosity is a skill? When the question of right or wrong comes, do you use this skill? It could save you from looking like a fool and more importantly distancing yourself from others when you put this skill into practice. When we harden our hearts and choose to pride over connection, we harm our relationships. This is especially true in our closest relationships like marriage and family bonds.

You have a creator who wants you to know Him so he can guide you. Tapping into a pure connection with God is essential for finding true success in recovery from sexual addiction. This is done through intentional learning, praying, scriptures, meditation, and opening your heart to listen. This is the best place to start on this journey to a wholehearted life.

In this video, Ty shares a tragic story about loss through which God created a path to find his purpose in life. Chase shares a personal story of learning about God and knowing of His existence for the first time. We discuss the value and reasoning for this first principle. Why is it so crucial in the process of overcoming sexual addictions like pornography?

Transcript (by Chelsea Jones):

Chase: Welcome to Wholehearted by Love Strong! Tyler and Chase here! So, coming down this morning, I had a lot on my mind. The first thing I wanted to do was–what’s up, Rooster?

Ty: Hey, Roo!

Chase: Dingle-Boy, poppin’ on the scene. He’s off again! Ty’s got–

Ty: I’ve got my Garmin on Rooster today to see how many miles he runs in this 20 minutes that we sit and talk so… I’m guessing it’s going to be up over six or seven (miles).

Chase: It’s kind of amazing because everytime I see him on one side–so you know, right now he’s coming from the north. He’s he’s headed east… I swear the next time I see him he’s going coming up the mountain from the west.

Ty: Somehow, somehow! It’s amazing!

Chase: Yeah! It’s kind of like those scenes from Superman or something where he wraps around the world and catches the bullet on the other side!

Ty: That’s kind of how he is! That’s how Rooster is!

Chase: Yeah, so we’ll see what is his paths and his stats are today. It might even be to help Ty get some steps in on his counter, I don’t know! (Laughter)

Ty: Exactly! That’s what I do, I just use him, now!

Chase: Yeah, there you go. I actually did find out… I accidentally looked at my health app on my phone, and I saw that I had put in over 3 miles yesterday.

Ty: That’s awesome!

Chase: Right? And that’s a regular work day! I was thinking, “I never had my phone in my pocket when I was cruising around the office… That doesn’t really make a ton of sense.” Then I realized that I put my phone in my pocket while I’m biking to work, so it’s catching all that. It’s counting that as steps, so I got like “6,000 steps” the other day, and they’re total bologna. (Laughter) I’m a little disappointed that the phone method is not as accurate.

Ty: It makes you feel good when you see it. It just doesn’t change your body at all!

Chase: No, not at all! So maybe placebo’s coming in and helping us out a little bit. I’m not sure that’s how it works, but…. Coming down this morning, I was thinking about– I got in the car there’s a book that Ty had suggested called “Loving What Is” by Byron Katie, and I started listening to it yesterday. I wanted to pick up where I left off. So, I went to go throw it on, I realized I hadn’t downloaded it yet on my phone. So I was just sitting there thinking, “Well crap, what am I going to do for the next 2 hours?” I love driving in the car, it’s just such a nice time to sit and be with yourself.

Ty: It’s meditative.

Chase: Oh, yeah. It can be! I ended up coming up with jokes all morning. I was just thinking about jokes, I don’t know why! That’s where my mind was at was, “Hey, got two and a half hours. Why don’t you just pretend like you’re on a stage doing some standup and see what you can crank out?” (2:51) So I’m not going to tell any–well, we’ll see!

Ty: You can’t say that without telling a joke! (Laughter)

Chase: Alright! So, I got a co-worker who’s got a farm in Costa Rica and she was telling ...

Ty: Do you want to start us or do you want me to?

Chase: You go ahead.

Ty: Alright. Hey guys, welcome back to the Wholehearted podcast, here. We are out here on a beautiful Friday morning in Logan, Utah, in the foothills above my house, again. We got a little bit of rain coming down, but the air is fresh. It feels almost like being down in Hawaii with the humidity and as you guys can see, there’s no better place to come go to work then right here. Right?

Chase: Even on a wet and rainy day!

Ty: Yeah! Even the rain’s a little refreshing. I’m sure it’s got my hair totally flat right now. That’s all right!

Chase: It’s a good thing that’s not important! One of the beautiful things that you can kind of see around us, if you’re watching the video at least, is there are clouds that we are on level with and above, in certain parts. Actually, you were saying Hawaii, but it kind of reminds me of being out on the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee where Papaw lived. So, that’s a little bit endearing for me.

Ty: Brings back some memories.

Chase: Yeah, it does.

Ty: Yeah, it was absolutely beautiful, I bet. I wish we could stay out here all day.

Chase: Yeah!

(Laughter)

Chase: I know at least one or two people that would shoot us for that!

(Laughter)

Ty: Yeah, I got a wife at home right now that would be like: “Oh, you call that work!”

Chase: No, we are working, we promise!

Ty: We are working, I swear it! I told her today about our outdoor office project, you know, and she’s like: “you guys are so full of crap! Now you’re going to work everyday and sit on top of a mountain and do nothing!”

Chase: I mean, that’s part of the reason it’s almost good to have somebody who’s saying that’s not a thing for you. To have a good rebuttal is that you actually do the thing (1:53) and it is work.

Ty: I’ve been thinking about all of the rebuttals because I know where I want to take this project, which is pretty much always being outside! So I’m always coming up with really good ideas. In fact, that goes along with the book that you and I–I guess it’s a documentary we listed to this week on the power of being out in nature. I told her about it yesterday and I said, “you gotta listen to this documentary about the three-day effect of being outside in nature!” And she was like, “Oh, so you and Chase are going camping this weekend?” (Laughter) I said, “no!”

Chase: That’s the soft pitch! (Laughter) She thought you were prefacing! I mean, it is Memorial Day weekend!

Ty: But today, Chase, I wanted to start off with just kind of a question for you to think about and maybe come up with any ideas. I ran into something today with my work at UPS that made me think about this as I was working .so for everyone who doesn’t know us very yet, I work in the morning times at UPS helping to get to the big semi trucks unloaded, and then the pack is loaded into the trucks that deliver to you guys’s houses. I was asked today to go into a different spot than I normally work.

What are you willing to go all in on? In this episode we highlight some stories about commitment and pouring your heart into something. When the feeling of desire and excitement leaves for your goals, do you give up (we’ve been there in either case)?

Daughters who give it their all running for track and fieldMissed opportunitiesThe evil snooze buttonChicago Sunrise Bike Ride and some Deadheads.

Ty: Okay.Chase: Cool. We’ve been rolling.Ty: Awesome, we’re rolling! You wanna start us off?Chase: Yeah, welcome to Love Strong! Welcome to Wholehearted! It’s the series we are going with now. (Laughter)

Ty: It’s good to be here with you guys. We didn’t know if we were actually going to be able to get anything in today because I’ve been gone down to Provo, Utah for the state championships for track and field the last two days. Chase was good enough to come up and watch my two younger girls while I was down there. I wasn’t sure we’re going to get into this, but I’m glad we did today.

Chase: Yeah it’s kind of amazing because you’ve been feeling not great! You said you’ve been feeling sick last night with a headache, and feverish right now. If I’m being honest, you look a little bit like a lobster, a little crab-like!

(Laughter)

Ty: I literally feel like I’m sunburned, but I know I’m not sunburned because it rained for two straight days and I was under an umbrella the whole time. But I feel like–it’s like in Napoleon Dynamite–it’s like vote for Pedro. I would need to go home and just shave my head because I feel like that right now. (Laughter) It feels really hot! So hopefully it’ll die down here, but I do feel like a lobster right now. While I was down there at this track and field thing, there were a couple of things that just ran through me that I think applied to some of the things that I’m working on, and specially in terms of this project that we’re working with. The first insight that I really had–and I think it’s worth everyone that’s listening to think about–is what places is in your life are you willing to go all in? And the reason I say that is because I’m down there for two days watching race after race after race, and in just about every race you can tell there was a kid in that race that just left everything there. Whether they won or not was beside the point: they left everything there. I think one of my most favorite things in the entire world is to watch somebody put themselves in an arena and give everything! One of the biggest treats for me just this weekend was how my daughter’s–both of them–ran. Lexi, a freshman, ran and she is on a big stage for the first time. It’s just really neat to see her–so I think she’s got the same fever thing because she was bright red and said she didn’t feel very good–but she still went out there and gave everything she had. She actually out-performed what she was supposed to do, and it’s is really cool to see. Madison, my older one she sometimes has a tendency to hold things back a little bit. I think she’s afraid of failing and she almost hedges her bets by leaving a little in the tank, sometimes. Today in her 1-mile 1600 race, she played it just right and then she didn’t win the race. She ended up I think 10th or 11th overall in the state.

Chase: It’s pretty incredible for a sophomore!

Ty: Yeah, for a sophomore not bad, you know? Really what I was so proud of was watching her as she came around that final turn: I could see that she was hurting and I thought she was just going to kind of nestle in behind a couple of these girls in front of her,

How important is it to have a place of refuge when the stress of life hits? What makes a space impactful? We discuss a few elements that make up that type of space and share some stories about our own places of refuge. (While being out on the Snake River for a Sunrise).

Transcript (provided by Chelsea Jones):

Chase: Yeah we’re ready, man!

Ty: You wanna intro us here today?

Chase: Alright, this is Ty and Chase with Love Strong. We’re out by the Snake River. Woo-hoo! This is Ty’s old stomping grounds actually so he’s been giddy like a child all morning!

Ty: Aw man, just as we were walking here today, just right out here behind me, one day I was out here fly fishing, and there was a mother moose that I didn’t see until I was about ten feet away and then when I heard her stomp at me, a baby stood up another ten feet away from me and she started chasing me. Actually; I started running out straight to the river to try to get away before she turned and left. My heart started pounding just coming through the woods today.

Chase: Just think about the possibility of seeing that mom again! (Laughter)

Ty: I know, I was kind of looking forward to it, hoping I would again, just because it was such a rush.

(Laughter)

Chase: Did you go under the water?

Ty: So, I tried to run across the water, and I got three steps in and face-planted.

(Laughter)

Chase: Graceful!

Ty: Yeah, it was pretty bad. I had a buddy with me, he was across the river, he said that he saw me come running out of the trees and he thought I was some miracle worker because I literally got four or five steps in before I actually fell. (Laughter) I was so panicked that I just freaked out, you know.

Chase: It’s funny because I remember that story a lot of the time when I am out by the river or by bodies of water. For some reason, I always envision myself tripping and a hoof just come straight down on my back and just stomping me. It’s a fleeting moment–comes and goes–but just feels like a real thing that could happen. So you were that close! (Laughter)

Ty: That’s what it felt like. I’m surprised it didn’t happen!

Chase: Dang! So we we got up this morning and headed out from our place–Chels and my place–where we live in Idaho Falls. We came out, watched the sunrise up here by Heise up by the Hot Springs, up by Cress Creek… This is a really, really beautiful area.

Ty: Yeah, this has been one of my favorite places. We used to live up here in Rexburg, as well; we actually now live in Logan, Utah, but I used to come here all the time. This is kind of my place to come and have peace; where I was 30 minutes away from home and I could come and get a couple of hours just to reset myself. I think just walking through here today, it brought back all those feelings and just thinking about how important it is that we take time to get away from the normal grind of life and find a place, or a situation, or something where we can find our own personal reset and we can seek and find relaxation. I know, in this particular place for me, I frequently–when I was working for the drug courts in Southeastern Idaho–I would frequently come here on the way home from work or on a day off just for an hour or two just to let all of the stress go from the problems I was carrying around from my clients and just see the value in making sure that we have a spot like that where we can do the reset.

Batter up! We’re launching our first podcast and video series. The goal with this series is to highlight wholehearted principles of living in action. We’ll be sharing stories of hope, loss, and vulnerability. Most of these stories come from our own personal lives or people that we know personally. Join us as we learn and grow.

Episode Transcript (provided by Chelsea Jones):

(Laughter)Tyler: Which camera are we looking at?Chase: Doesn’t matter; pick one. Let’s go with this one!Tyler: Let’s go with that one; okay. Do you wanna start it, or do you want me to?Chase: Go ahead!(Laughter)Tyler: Alright guys, what’s up? Welcome to Love Strong! I’m Tyler Patrick. Chase: I’m Chase Jones.Tyler: We are up here in the Wasatch Mountains in Logan, Utah; just up behind my house where I live, trying to soak up the goodness of what God’s given us. And try and introduce you to who we are as Love Strong and invite you to come on the journey we’re gonna take you on. So…

Chase: So this is gonna be a series that we do that we are able to focus on some of the things that we really think are important and we care a lot about. The medium being through podcasts and through some YouTube videos that you’ll have access to.

Tyler: We’ll also be teaching some courses online and offering even experiences as, basically being out in this kind of area, but also doing therapeutic things to help live the whole-hearted lifestyle. So to get started, I wanted to introduce myself a little bit. Again, my name’s Tyler Patrick. I’m a marriage and family therapist and I specialize mainly in the treatment of sexual addiction, and betrayal trauma, affairs… Other forms of trauma. And in the course of my work, I have stumbled on the principles of recovery that I think every single person needs to know and to live for a wholehearted life. And I’ve been feeling really impressed to try and take the principles that I teach my clients and to spread them to other people in my life who I know could benefit from having those things to help them live the lives they want, to have the happiness they want, the relationships, and reaching their personal goals. That’s my professional side. (1:55)Personally, I’m married. I’ve got a beautiful wife of almost 19 years now, Rhiannon. ANd I have four daughters. Madison is a 16-year-old, Alexis is a 15-year-old, and Brinnley is a 10-year-old, and Paisley is a 9-year-old. So, four daughters. And part of my life quest is to try and figure out how to do the kind of work in my life they’ll train the men, and boys, to be the right kinds of husbands to my daughters as they grow up. And personally, I am also in recovery myself. I live the principles that I teach. I am currently trying to live everything I teach my clients; I am still not a finished product. I have learned some things along the way that I am ready to share freely. And I am going to be in a continual journey along this path, too. And I’ll continue to share as I learn and grow, myself.

Chase: So like I said, my name’s Chase Jones. Tyler and I are actually family. So, he’s my brother-in-law; he married my oldest sister, Rhiannon. And I’ve gotten the chance to know him over the past 18 years. Actually–that’s crazy to think it’s been that long. He knew me when I was a little pipsqueak. Actually, we’ve got a flying V–a perfect flying V right over us, right now!Tyler: That’s pretty awesome!Chase: That’s a little God wink, right there! Thank YOU!But, it’s been really cool to watch his journey and have Tyler’s as an example and mentor in my life in a lot of different areas. I’ve been working recovery myself for the past, probably, 8 years, I’ll say. And trying to learn these different principles through experiences, and getting to know first hand what it’s like to live them.
