Today on part two of our conversation with Danny Sanchez we talk about his organization, The City Peace Project. The City Peace Project exists as a catalyst that empowers youth to thrive in every sphere of life. Through personal mentorship, TCPP promotes life altering values and skills that equip students to cultivate lives marked by love and peace.
The City Peace Project is grounded in the belief that a cultural transformation will be the fruit of investing in this generation; one youth at a time. We have witnessed the tremendous ripple effect that can come from just one student’s commitment to being a ‘peacemaker,’ and we move confidently into the future with the HOPE of witnessing a wave of peacemakers victoriously shifting a culture of violent chaos to one where peace reigns.

Today on The Bay Area Beat we sit down with Elaine Johnson who works with the DA's office in Santa Cruz County and spearheads The Neighborhood Courts Program..  The Neighborhood Courts program is a community driven, pre-filing diversion program designed to divert low level misdemeanor offenses from entering the criminal justice system.

First time offenders are given an opportunity to take responsibility and repair the harm they caused through a community-based process using restorative justice principles instead of a courtroom.

Neighborhood Courts address criminal violations that impact the quality of life in the community and are an alternative to entering into criminal court.

The purpose of the program is to: reduce recidivism by understanding why offenders offend, address the harm the offense had on the victim (if applicable) and the community and, using restorative principles rather than punitive principles, effectively and efficiently restore the local community, victim and offender back into community.

We are thrilled to share this revolutionary program right here on The Bay Area Beat.

Today we are joined by Lily Strong of Earth Diaper. You can find them at https://www.earthdiaper.org/
Earth Diaper creates a cleaner, greener world for all by composting diapers that would otherwise overcrowd landfills. They support healthy, stress free babies and parents by providing diapers and composting to those struggle to afford them.
Why diapers? Because over and over again they hear from families that this is too difficult a thing to provide and that diaper changes happen too infrequently from lack of supply. Plus diapers are 3% of our landfill waste and growing. They take 500 years to break down. And mothers will tell you, it hurts their hearts to create so much garbage. Thus the idea was born: compostable diapers for the most vulnerable families.

You can also learn more about compostable and bamboo diapers at https://www.babyadvisor.org/best-biodegradable-diapers/ and The SF Bay Area's Compostable Diaper Service https://earthbaby.deliverybizpro.com/home.php

Angelica Campanale Acton, L.Ac. is a second-generation licensed acupuncturist in the state of California and owner of Juniper Acupuncture Orthopedics and Wellness in Los Gatos California. Anandini Wadera also is educated in Chinese Medicine which includes the use of acupuncture, herbal medicine, cups, moxibustion and tui na (Chinese massage) to treat a wide spectrum of ailments. Some common complaints for which Chinese Medicine is sought after are pain management, musculo-skeletal disharmonies, headache, infertility and women’s health. With that said, Chinese Medicine’s ability to increase the function of the immune system and promote the parasympathetic nervous system make it suitable for addressing autoimmune disorders, the common cold or flu, digestive health and other stress-induced complaints. It can manage PTSD and emotional imbalances, and the U.S. military employs acupuncturists at some VA hospitals for this purpose.

Today we sit down with Eric Shapiro. Eric, with his wife Rhoda started the Milpitas beat to bring community news to Milpitas in an enlightening and enthusiastic way. The Milpitas Beat is a community-based print and online newspaper located in Milpitas, California. Their vision is to cultivate a more connected, conscious, and vibrant community by providing news coverage that truthfully reflects the expression, ideas, and culture of the people of Milpitas.

The new print edition, which just launched in April 2019, is monthly, and comes out on the third Thursday of every month.

There’s no use sugar-coating it: Local journalism is in jeopardy. All across this country, newspapers, faced with decreasing revenue, are closing up shop. And many of the newspapers that are still surviving have been gobbled up by private equity firms. These firms put their focus on building profit, and not community; and in the process, have turned once-vibrant newspapers into shells of their former selves.

That’s why they created The Milpitas Beat. They want to work to create a newspaper that is deeply in touch with what the residents of Milpitas are thinking, feeling, and wanting to see in their community. Guided by a deep fascination of people, stories, culture, art, education, and politics, the Milpitas Beat works with passion, always, to deliver the articles and media that speak most directly to the people they serve. Also, as residents of Milpitas themselves, they are deeply committed to creating a print and online newspaper that supports and enriches the community in any way it can.

Today we sit down with our old friend David Ocampo and talk about his work with producing Dia San Jose. The premier Dia De Los Muertos event in Downtown San Jose. Día San José is a much needed San José celebration that promotes our resilient cultural pride. The goal is to produce a downtown destination festival that center stages traditions, while creating new ones that are relevant today. This Day of the Dead inspired festival combines music, culture, tradition, food and art into a mezcla that tastes as good if not better than your abuelas capirotada. We look forward to hanging with you on October 18th & 19th, 2019 as we rock the dead, rattle your bones and shake the soul. Experience the signature Calavera Camp for kids hosted by KQED. Walk through the Artist colony filled with over thirty five contemporary and traditional artists who have masterfully captured the spirit of Día De Los Muertos. You don’t want to miss the signature altars that the low and slow amigos at Blvd Bombs create every year from the back of their trunks, you thought their cars were a work of art, wait until you see the altars they create. On the main stage enjoy music that we are sure will put you into the muerto mood, cheer on your favorite Lucha Libre match, or watch in awe of local Chicano youth artists paint murals live at the festival, all while having home cooked authentic Comida Mexicana, no food trucks here, they keep it old school con safos. Relax in the signature beer garden with a cold chela, brought to you by Modelo.

Today on The Bay Area Beat we sit down with Natasha Gupta who is running for State Assembly Seat in the 25th District. The district straddles the divide between the East Bay and Silicon Valley. The district consists primarily of suburban residential areas and is one of the most heavily Asian state legislative districts in California. Natasha is a new comer to politics and brings an infections and fresh perspective to her campaign.

"I am a political outsider from the private sector, and have worked in Silicon Valley for six years. I was born and raised in the Bay Area, and grew up in Danville, CA. I moved to San Jose after graduating with a BA in Environmental Policy from the University of California, San Diego." says Natasha.

"I am the first in my family to run for office, and while I’ve never held a political position, I have always been civically involved at the grassroots level. I was a volunteer for Obama’s 2008 campaign in high school, and more recently, was a community organizer for Mayor Pete Buttigieg’s presidential campaign, and ran one of the largest independent organizations for Pete Buttigieg, Silicon Valley for Pete."

"The turning point that propelled my decision to run was when the Gilroy Garlic Festival Shooting had happened. It hit home personally, because I had gone the day before with my husband, Michael. It showed me that even in California, the divisions of our country showed up at our front door. I couldn’t stop thinking that it could have been us. I couldn’t believe that it could happen here. Seeing the response of the federal government and no solutions from the top after the incidents in Dayton and El Paso, I felt compelled to take action.
My platform focuses on many of the pressing issues in California todaywith a message of making moral leadership a cornerstoneof California’s policy priorities. I am running on an ambitious agenda of a housing and rehabilitation guarantee for the homeless, a complete reform of the cost of college, California Care for All as a public option, a statewide Green New Deal, and ending the epidemic of gun violence and domestic terrorism."
