The Berlin based artist Mario Berger joins my podcast series on episode 098 with a pretty special mix.

For those who are not familiar with Mario Berger:

Mario was born in Potsdam, a town, close to the gates of Berlin - so it was quite obvious that he got hit by the Techno scene sooner or later.

Inspired by the old Tresor Club, Mario Berger began to play at smaller events in his hometown - later it was Alexander Kowalski who invited him to play at Tresor for the very first time.

Mario became a resident dj very quick and an integral part of the team of the „New Faces“ nights.

Besides his activity at Tresor, he released some great productions on MORD, Konsequent and others - some of them as a collaboration with Alexander Kowalski.

For the last episode of The Grasshopper Warbler in 2021 I could convince the scandinavian artist Miia Magia , who delivered such a beautiful selection.

Since nearly two decades Miia Magia has been traveling from Britpop and Nu Disco to Deep House and Techno. She organized parties and earned residencies at the legendary Helsinki clubs Semifinal, DTM and mbar that made her a diverse and open minded dj.

When she moved to Stockholm in 2015 for 4 years, she more and more developed her own deep, sharp, groovy and moody sound that is reflected in her contribution for this months episode.

When she moved back to Helsinki two years ago, she’s been focusing on producing music and run her own club and podcast concept Motto. The latest addition to that is the label project Motto Sono Records, run together with Mr. Barth alias Cari Lekebusch.

Todays guest is the German Hannover based artist Session Restore.

Originally a duo, Session Restore is nowadays the solo project of Christopher.

We met over 10 years ago at a gig in Hannover, continuing at the Schaltkreis partys in Münster,

where Session Restore played a bunch of times.

As the founder of the quality label rauh, Christopher declares himself as a vinyl junkie with an experience in doing over 20 years that uses his label platform for his own projects and productions from close friends, completed by remixes - so far from Markus Suckut, Henning Baer and more.

With an appearance on Alan Fitzpatricks fabric mix (Speak Out; released on rauh), a podcast series called rauh_x and partys and label nights in Hannover, Session Restore is a key figure in the scene in and around the city.

And just because of this huge quality it was a no brainer to invite him so my beloved podcast series.

Since the beginning i always tried to bring the greatest artists to my podcast series: legendary djs but also promising talents and friends.

Same for this months episode, for which i could convince the genius Eduardo De La Calle.

The Madrid-based producer, DJ and label owner can look back on a production career that has now spanned almost two decades.

As a music chameleon, Eduardo De La Calle has worked with amazing labels like Planet E, NON Series, Turbo, International Deejay Gigolos, Mule Musiq and of course his own vinyl-only imprint Analog Solutions.

Well, for this months episode Eduardo prepared a vinyl-only mix, filled with 100% own productions. A true masterpiece, i promise. One of the best mixes i have heard - so lets go and enjoy this outstanding journey.

This month i have a very special guest - studio416.

It is a collaboration between Hendrik Vaak and Sven Elmlund.

Right in the middle of the heart of Berlin, a new project has emerged giving us a fresh breeze of pure and strong electronic music. studio416 genuinely represents a break from daily life – for the listeners as well as for the producers. Being quite active as single artists or with other projects, both musicians use studio416 as their oasis, which they visit from time to time and to which they take us in their songs.

Well, that describes the duo really well - but i think we should head to their very exclusive mix, that includes live cuts and studio tracks.

Today's contribution comes from Italian DJ and producer Stephan Krus.

I came across his name a few months ago when I received one of his last EPs.

I was really touched by his productions, which had great old school and industrial taste.

Stephan Krus was born in Zurich and grew up in Italy.

In 2001 he became a resident at the legendary Italian techno club Matrix in Brescia and also released his first EP on Mauro Picotto's Underground Media Records.

Over the years he gained a lot of experience in clubs in many countries and was still able to find his current residency at HYPERs events in Italy near Venice.

Successful releases on labels such as Decoy, Dead Cert Records, SK Black, Naked Lunch and many others made him icon in his own country.

His pursuits in the scene have moved further with the beginning of his label Finitude Music in 2014 that released 6 records.

On one of those releases Marcel teamed up with the mastermind Alexander Kowalski aka d_func.

For todays show Marcel prepared a really special mix full of Electro that is one of the greatest contributions i got for my show within the past 6 years.

With releases on top labels including MB Electroniks, Flash Recordings, Analytic Trail and many more, Lex built up a reputation in the scene that brought him to gigs in cities such as Miami, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris, Dublin and many more.

In 2013 he started his own imprint called Unkown Territory. An exciting new techno label with a deep, dark sound where i already released a track too - and some remixes and an EP is coming also from my side within the next months.

Todays guest is the finnish dj, producer and labelowner Orion.

Juska Wendland aka Orion is based in Helsinki, owns an amazing label called Absence Of Facts, is besides Techno also a producer for Downtempo and Ambient and hosts his own radio show every Friday 7 - 10 PM on Ylex, the Finnish National Radio.

I came across his work months ago, when i discovered one of his collaborations with the swedish mastermind Cari Lekebusch.

Orion just told me that they had a really good studio session in February - four 134-136bpm tracks are coming out in the upcoming months. He really enjoys working with him in a studio he said - this was the third time and as they both know now how they are used to work the tracks, it’s easy to just fire up the machines and get going.

His label Absence of Facts is going strong - Orion said: "I believe small indie labels have a lot of potential in the future, especially outside of mainstream music. AOF has lots of new releases in the pipeline - and I see the project is more than just a record label. I can channel all sort of arts out with the releases - the cover art is a series of abandoned places I’ve visited around the world and the video clips are series of experiments with After Effects."

For any further info please visit djorion.fi. There you will find all infos, videos, links to Soundcloud and other platforms!

  2. Orion - Visionary (Absence of Facts)

  5. Siber - Guidance (Point Nemo)

  6. Cari Lekebusch - Coagulate (H-Productions)

Graeme Reedie and Craig Morrison aka Silicone Soul look back on a huge amount of released music including amazing works on their own Darkroom Dubs imprint.

I was honored to meet Graeme in person October last year during an event in Münster where he played a great set that made me feel electronic music in some other way. I was so touched by his track selections when i listened him, it was completely stunning.

Five years ago i relaunched my beloved radioshow The Grasshopper Warbler - and today we have episode 60 with a guest that i admire since i started being into Techno music.

My name is Heron and i proudly present you the mastermind and originator of the Swedish Techno scene: Cari Lekebusch.

In October Cari and i played together at the legendary Fusion Club and he was so kind to offer the recording to my podcast series.

Cari is also - as always - on fire with fresh releases:

An EP on his imprint H-Productions with Benjamin Mull is out now and absolutely worth a check - expect some heavy floorkillers! The release is named Fringilla.

Besides this one Cari has another cracker out with Orion - called Morning Voodoo, released on Absence Of Facts - my absolute favorite these days from him.

And last but not least - a great track on the 10 years Sleaze Records compilation.

For those who are into Electro are surely familiar with his Mystic Letter K alias - and here too, there is fresh music: check it on h-productions.se/mlk

No tracklist!

Oliver Lieb is in the mix today with an absolutely stunning session; a live recording from his recent gig at Karlson Club in Frankfurt that will blow your mind.

For those who don't know:

Oliver Lieb has been in the game since 1988 and, with more than 250 singles released, has achieved a great reputation far beyond his hometown of Frankfurt.

With his first EP as Force Legato in 1989, he laid the foundation for his musical career, which has lost none of its influence in the scene to this day.

Recent releases such as the Gone EP on Christian Smith's Tronic, but also his old works on Harthouse, not to forget his countless projects like LSG, make him an indispensable factor in the techno scene.

Todays guest is the one and only D-Knox!

Luckily i could get this great producer for this months episode with a really dope mix!

Donnell Knox aka D-Knox is a Kalamazoo-native with a very strong connection to Detroit and Chicago, where Knox spent his childhood summer vacations taping radio shows from The Wizard and Hot Mix 5.

When his cousin Jay Denham brought him to Detroit he first met the legendary Derrick May - from then Techno was his life.

In 1995 he founded his own - todays legendary - label Sonic Mind.

His passion for funk-laden electronic music brought him to countries such as Japan, Germany, Scotland, France, England and many more before he moved to Warsaw where he still resides.

He also has some sick releases out now:

Life Is A Dream EP with and absolutely outstanding track called "Before I Die" (a huge favorite of mine these days!) and another release called The Human Machine.

Besides his mixes and releases you definitely should check out his Resident Advisor Exchange podcast episode 398 where he unpacked the spiritual philosophy what has shaped his life and music.

I am really happy to present you the great Vince Watson who contributed such a beautiful mix for this months show.

Vince Watson, born in Scotland, started releasing music in 1995 when the legendary Dave Angel picked one of his demos for his label Rotation.

With a residency at The Arena in Glasgow and his debut LP Biologique he gained his reputation and caused a catatonic impact in the global electronic scene for setting a personal hypnotic perspective of groovy, melody and atmospheric sounds.

Followed by releases on labels such as Planet E, Delsin, Poker Flat, Tresor, his own imprint Bio Music and many more, Vince Watson has proven himself as a guarantee for high quality music.

To date he looks back on 9 albums, more than 150 singles and countless remixes.

Vince has also some current releases out:

'Another Rendezvous' on Yoruba.

'Via' LP on my label Everysoul (Bandcamp until June 22nd then worldwide on all stores). 'Via' remix projects also in the works with remixes confirmed so far by Atjazz, Osunlade, Tom Middleton, Steve Bug, Kiko Navarro.

In 2005 he founded his own label AYCB, that still represents his own music as well as great producers such as Ray Kajioka, DJ-T1000, Boys Noize, Dave Tarrida and many more.

With 6 albums, over 50 records and countless remixes Housemeister is an iconic figure of the German and Berlin Techno scene and he never gets tired of his job.

Todays guest is the British dj, producer and label owner Ed Davenport.Releasing music for over 10 years Ed has resolutely carved out a sound of his own.

He runs his own label, Counterchange, and also records as Inland.

With timeless releases on labels such as Figure, Falkplatz and of course his own imprint, Ed shaped his artistic profile and landed himself regular gigs in the German capital Berlin, playing the first of many sets at Panorama Bar in 2008.

Since the start of 2013 Ed appeared at least 6 times a year at the Panorama Bar and Berghain, holding up a regular slot that has seen his fan-base grow hugely, both in Berlin and internationally.

In 2014 another chapter started for Ed when he teamed up with Fuction as Function/Inland for the first release on the relaunched Infrastructure imprint.

Ed has been working recently on a big collaboration with visual artist Julian Charriere. He produced the soundtrack for an 80 minute film installation titled 'An Invitation To Disappear', that will be on show at the Kunsthalle Mainz from 13.04.18-08.07.18. An album version of the project is planned for release this September.

Please welcome Sender Berlin and Alexander Lukat to the show.I was honored to play alongside the Sender Berlin duo and Alexander Lukat last month at Alexander Kowalski's birthday bash at Suicide Cicus and luckily they contributed the last hour of their absolutely amazing dj set for this months issue.

Known for their strong and loyal connection to the legendary Tresor and the Tresor label, Sender Berlin have been a solid and indispensable part of the german Techno scene since the beginning of their journey and their first release in 1998.

They proved this without exception that night in February - and Alexander Lukat, known for his residency at the Tresor, his timeless mix CD on Sender Berlin's groundbreaking album Spektrum Weltweit and his productions with Heiko Laux, which brought him to Rejected and Ovum, contributed to this beautiful journey that evening.

I am really happy to present you one of my biggest idols from the early days: the one and only DJ Rush.

On the one hand, everything is said, on the other hand, there is so much to tell about his person and his timeless, as well as groundbreaking works.

Rush started releasing his own productions in 1991 on historical labels such as Dance Mania and Relief, followed by records on Kne' Deep, Force Inc., Djax Up, Pro-Jex, High Octane Records and the Stammheim linked imprint Hörspielmusik.

When I started to discover Techno for myself in the late nineties, he was a central figure of the wave at that time, which was reflected in Thuringia.

His countless hits have made him immortal.

His unique style, which still stands on a pedesta, has shaped generations.

Dan Curtin joined this months issue with an absolutely great contribution!Dan’s considerably impressive discography dates back to 1992 when his first releases on Detroit’s 33 RPM Records and Belgium’s Buzz motivated him to launch his own production hub: Metamorphic Recordings.

His unwillingness to commit to a singular style was instrumental to his continuously fresh releases on big players such as Peacefrog, Strictly Rhythm and Sublime, while his forward-thinking approach brought him tremendous support from the likes of Carl Cox, Carl Craig and many more.

Over 70 singles, nine albums and many years later, Dan has become a living legend.

For this months show i invited an absolute favorite artist of mine: Gragee Pikanen.

The Swedish producer, dj and label owner had his first involvement with music at the age of thirteen when he started playing drums and spinning vinyl at the local youth centre.

Over the years he got more into Electro and Techno and finally became a part of NFLKRU - a Swedish collective of MCs and DJs with members like Cari Lekebusch, Kaliffa Karlsson and more.

Later on, in 2007, Cari Lekebusch invited him to produce an Electro album for his H-Productions label.

Ever since Gragee has been working relentlessly on his music and published many unique releases on H-Productions, Duality and co-productions with Cari aka Braincell on the German imprint Harthouse.

This year Gragee started his own imprint called Obsculex that reflects his impressive productions, filled with synthetic and drone elements to create pulsating atmospherical soundscapes.

Since the late 90s, Leandro has been an important part of the Spanish Techno scene.

Releases on Ongaku Musik and Fieber Records under his alias "cio", but also on labels such as Primate, Intec, Planet Rhythm and Primevil made him a prominent producer.

Besides that he also plays live performances as "UnCUT" and owns the label "SUB tl", both with his partner HD Substance.

Todays guest is one of my favorite producers at the moment. At mostly all recent gigs i played especially his remixes. It is Vegim.

Vegim's journey began already in the early 90s where he started collecting records and became, 8 years later, a full time slave to the underground.

In 2006 he released his very first EP on TMM Records.

Since then he published countless remixes and lots of EPs on labels such as TMM Records, Naked Lunch, Slap Jaxx, Decoy, Planet Rhythm and many more.

Almost packed with records from the earlier days you can expect a mix far from 130 bpm.

Todays guest is the Toronto based dj, producer, promoter and label owner Greg Gow.

Greg is one of Canada's leading Techno artists, his international reputation is well established and still growing.

Since 2001, Greg has had his own imprint Restructured which strives to push
deep funky, driving melodic music.
Over the years the label has worked with many artists including Samuel L Session, Stephen Brown, Mateo Murphy, Francesco Bonora and Antwon Faulkner to mention a few.

In late 2009 Greg had his first of two releases, The Pilgrimage, an EP re-launch, for Transmat, the world-famous label of Detroit's Derrick May, one of the Godfathers of Techno. The second Transmat release in 2011 features Twilight Soul. Both have been highly acclaimed.

From that time on, Greg released many successful Eps and remixes on labels like KMS Records, 100% PURE, Bulletdodge and his own imprint Restructured.

This months episode features a mix from the Dublin-based dj and producer: Ian O'Donovan.

I came across Ian's work a few years ago when i also started releasing on Kevin's KMS Records.

His first EP "Uprising" was a huge success and made me fell in love with his music.

After more appearances on KMS, Christian Smith's Tronic imprint and Detone, he also made it to Adam Beyer's Drumcode with a single track called "The Border" which appears on his guest mix and will be released in May.

This months guest is the Berlin-based Techno producer, Live Act and DJ Ray Kajioka.Ray is best known for his output on Kanzleramt Music. But also for his on Cocoon released EP "Never Ending" and remixes for artists like Joel Mull, Dave Clarke, Alexander Kowalski and many more.

A striking aspect of his music is certainly the warm spheric and impulsive sound, which is constantly present in all his productions.

“The typical Ray-sound!”, as some call it simply, is appreciated all around the globe and had taken him to events international-wide.

His debut album "En Route" can be expected in March on Heiko Laux' Kanzleramt Music.

Besides that there will be also a remix for Nicholas Bacher, coming one month later in April, on Yan Stricker's !!Organism imprint.

This episode's guest is another top favorite dj and producer of mine: UK based Paul Mac.

Paul started releasing music in the mid 90s. Labels such as Prime Evil, Primate, Theory, Hardgroove and his own imprint Stimulus were platforms for his unique productions under a lot of aliases.

These days, Paul is still a diligent producer:

He has an album coming up on Steve O' Sullivan's Mosaic under his alias Jorge Zamacona.

After the epic issue number 9 featuring an exclusive live recording from the one and only Laurent Garnier, it is time again, after Rolando, for another Berghain resident: Norman Nodge.Norman Nodge has been a resident DJ at Berghain since 2005. Being a life-long music lover, DJ and promoter of his own parties during the 90s, Norman achieved his current status as Berlin’s secret weapon for serious techno.

A few years ago i booked him with my guys from the °Schaltkreis crew and directly became a "fan". He played an amazing set, combining the old and the new in a way i never heard before.

And as he says:

„It is my goal as a DJ to make people dance without walking on trodden paths of recent trends. I want to sensitize dancers for unusual sounds, old and new.“

This months episode is a really really special one to me, as one of my top 5 musicians from the electronic scene contributed an exclusive live recording from his recent gig at Sonus Festival - it is the one and only Laurent Garnier.

Laurent has been making the planet dance for over 25 years.

One of the pioneering DJs of the dance music scene, Laurent Garnier experienced first-hand the euphoria of the Acid House movement in Manchester.

In 1988 he went back to France, started his Wake Up partys in the early 90s at the famous Rex Club.

His first album, Shot in the Dark, was released in 1995. His second, 30, appeared in 1997 and included one of Garnier's best selling singles, "Crispy Bacon".

After appearing worldwide with DJ appearances during the late 1990s, Garnier returned to production with Unreasonable Behaviour, released in early 2000, which featured one of his best known songs, "The Man with the Red Face".

Todays guest is another favorite since i started listening to Techno: Rolando.

Rolando grew up in south west Detroit, a Hispanic district.

In 1994 he was introduced to Mike Banks by a mutual friend and joined Underground Resistance.

Five years later, in 1999, 'Knights of The Jaguar' turned perceptions of Techno on their head, breaking into other genres of dance music and becoming a classic in the boxes of many DJs. The track has a long legacy of reworking and lives on fifteen years later inspiring audiences from all genres.

It was voted the 26th best Dance track of all time by Mixmag readers.

As of November 2004, Rolando left both Underground Resistance and his Los Hermanos project behind.

2014 Rolando has launched his own label R3 ( Roland Rocha Records) and will exclusively release his own music on his label.

Rolando now a Dj for almost thirty years continues to work internationally as a Dj and continues to hold a residency at the notorious and enigmatic Berlin club Berghain.

Welcome back to another issue of The Grasshopper Warbler.

This episode's guest is one of my favorite artists since over 15 years: Alexander Kowalski.

Alexander reflects back on a 15-year career that, beginning with the first baby steps in the Berlin underground, finds him today continuing as an internationally sought after producer, remixer, live act, DJ and successful label owner with unmistakable style and an impressive discography. His albums “Echoes” "Progress", "Response" and "Changes" are regarded as classics, and all document the notable musical development of an artist who consistently and straightforwardly enriches techno music’s landscape. Powerful, richly detailed and virtuously produced techno tracks such as "Belo Horizonte", "Speaker Attack" or "The Heat Of The Night" have become Alexander’s often copied trademark.

Consequently in 2009 Alexander took the step towards artistic independence. After founding his own label Damage Music Berlin, it has skirted short-lived trends to become easily established as one of the most important innovative triggers in the international scene at the junction between house and techno.

Welcome back to another issue of The Grasshopper Warbler with me, Heron. This episode's guest is one of my close friends, a great producer and a mind-blowing DJ: Markus Suckut.

Over the last years, Markus developed his very own style and found his way to Len Faki's Figure imprint, but also to other reputable labels like Soma, Falkplatz and many more.

Besides these kinda guest appearances he also has his own imprint called SCKT. Founded in January 2012, SCKT delivers his own productions and thereby present the root of his own style.

The mix Markus sent me for the show is a live recording from a recent gig at the famous Lehmann in Stuttgart, Germany. He played the closing on a Sunday and it's the last hour.

To get more information about Markus please check markussuckut.com and sckt.de.

This months guest is one of my biggest idols, a huge influence on the whole Techno scene & history since decades and owner of the legendary KMS Records: Kevin Master Reese Saunderson.

There is so much to say about Kevin, his mind-blowing releases on his imprint as E-Dancer, Reese, Tronikhouse, Kaos, Kreem & many more have given distinction to the whole scene as we know it today.

His maybe best known project Inner City, together with Paris Grey and Ann Saunderson, has also achieved a huge reputation since their hit single "Good Life" has been released in the late 80s.

And they are still on fire: Inner City just recorded a new single called "Bad Girl" that will be out very soon on KMS Records. Definitely a record to watch out for, i promise!

And there is another project to announce: the so called Origins tour with several dates worldwide -

and also at Movement this year, check it out, more dates to follow!

To get some more infos on Kevin and KMS Records please visit kmsrecordsus.com or kevinsaunderson.com.

Welcome back to another hot episode of The Grasshopper Warbler.Todays guest is one of the next generation from Sweden - birthplace of Drumcode & H-Productions: Nima Khak.

Nima has achieved a great reputation over the last years by releasing music on Cari Lekebusch's H-Productions, Adam Beyer's Drumcode and also on the fresh swedish imprint 1:53.2.

One of his recent releases is one of my favorite Eps this year, a great record together with Jesper Dahlbäck called Interstellar EP.

He also is going to start his very own imprint this year called "Sand" - definitely a project to keep an eye on, same for Nima himself.
