We’re back and in person together. Frank is sitting in again too! We’re talking through the beginning of Advent at Lakeview and Safety Harbor. Tim skipped football to be a pastor. Andrew stepped back in after being away for a few weeks, and got several compliments on the guest speaker.
Frank preached at Andrew’s church… again. Pretty sure it’s just Frank’s church now. Jeff is down from Charm City. Lakeview is decked out for all things Christmas, and we have no idea when Andrew is coming home
Frank preached at Safety Harbor and will probably take over. Good thing Lakeview already hired him. Tim preached on sex and scared off a few parents…what else is new?
We’ve got a new man on the couch. You might know him. Andrew leaves on Sabbatical trip on Wednesday, and wants to know how much to post. Tim and Frank are heading to a conference tomorrow. Safety Harbor celebrated their annual Thanksgiving Sunday. Lakeview is in the process of finalizing the 2025 budget.
Andrew recycled part of a sermon from 7 years ago, and doesn’t know if he should feel relieved or insulted that no-one seemed to notice. Tim had a guest preacher, but somehow found himself working even more than usual on Sunday. Lakeview had its last membership class of the year. Safety Harbor is undergoing a bunch of renovations, which is great, unless you need to get work done. We’re wondering how early is too early to show up to a meeting.
If we look a little bit older and wiser than we did last week, it is because we are. We both had birthdays this week, and the celebrations just don’t hit the same when you are a grown-up. Both of our churches are preparing to host elections next week, and we are talking through getting a jump on holiday happenings.
It was a week of trying to get back to normal after the storms. Andrew played church administrator and realized why it is so important to have a good one. Tim did a funeral for a stranger. Lakeview is wrapping up their hurricane recovery damage. Safety Harbor kicked off a sermon series that actually started last week.
Both of our families, homes, and churches survived Hurricane Milton, kind of. We’ll walk you through what it looked like for each of us, and then discuss what ministry has looked like the past five days. We are discussing the awkwardness of asking for and accepting help, and what to do next.
We are preparing for yet another hurricane here in greater Tampa Bay. Tim’s family is staying put, while Andrew’s is getting out of Dodge. We are talking through what the past few weeks have been like being pastors to storm victims, and realizing that there are some things we just aren’t good at.
Wedding Season is in full swing in the Sunshine State. We both had full on Sports Dad Weekends. We’re talking about serving in ministries outside of our churches. Both Safety Harbor and Lakeview elders are gathering, one group more often than the other. Safety Harbor has a major work project starting next week. Lakeview has moved to video announcements.
Tim is getting into the rhythm of preaching three times every Sunday morning. Andrew is wondering how long he’s going to be playing youth pastor. Safety Harbor played host to Andrew’s kids’ birthday party. Lakeview is getting unsolicited resumes. And we’re talking about why SEO and social media presence Toe-tally matters for churches.
Tim pretty much just lives at Lakeview now after yesterday. We are talking through exceptionally long ministry days and seasons and how we recover afterwards. Andrew’s other duties as assigned took a toll on him on Thursday. We’re getting into when to ask for help and when to white knuckle it. Both of our churches held our annual fantasy football drafts yesterday, we are in full on school mode.
Lakeview kicked off a brand new series, and celebrated baptisms. Safety Harbor had some unexpected guests, and threw a pool party. Andrew is in full on Ted Lasso mode, Tim got in a car accident. We’re talking new service times, and when to announce them.
It was back to school day for Andrew’s family and it all went horribly wrong. Tim had a potential new hire in town over the weekend, and even though he did not have to preach, he worked a lot this weekend. We are talking through some specifics of funerals, and how Andrew almost ruined a wedding.
We recorded this episode during Hurricane Debby, and had power and internet issues. The episode ends abruptly, we don't actually get to talk about everything in the show show notes before the feed dies, but it's still fun.
We had a full show, with tons to discuss, and then a hurricane hit. We’re talking church during a natural disaster, when to cancel and when to power through. We met with some pastor buddies and their elders on Saturday. Andrew almost ruined a wedding that even a monsoon couldn’t ruin. Tim had to say goodbye to a church member.
We’ve both been gone a lot, and have come home to loss in our churches. We are talking through the intricacies of family vacation while comforting church members. Tim hasn’t preached in two weeks, Andrew had a guest worship leader yesterday.
Andrew’s family left Florida just to get stuck in the middle of a hurricane in Arkansas. Tim took his family to the beach, and brought the whole church with them. Safety Harbor had a first time guest preacher, and Lakeview celebrated baptisms.
We’ve been all over the map, hitting just about every SEC state for camp (Tim) and family vacation (Andrew). Both Lakeview and Safety Harbor had guest preachers. Andrew played visitor at a church, and Tim played youth ministry volunteer.

Safety Harbor threw Andrew a graduation party, Lakeview celebrated some graduations of their own. Tim has a kid who can drive. Andrew has less kids for a few weeks. We’re talking through summer attendance, and how to plan meetings.

Things are happening in Lakeview Land. Not only is the congregation growing, but they are now entering into the wild world of adult rec league sports. Safety Harbor had to bring the outdoors in yesterday with the threat of storms. Andrew’s dad was the hero of Sunday morning. Tim is so tired that he didn’t even get his ice bath in this morning. Both of our families are wrapping up the school year.

Tim and Andrew had two very different weeks. Andrew traveled across the southeastern United States to attend his graduation, see the sites, and visit family. Tim had a week full of meetings, planning and executing Mother’s Day. We’re talking through missing major holidays, and when it is time to hire more people.

Yesterday the congregation of Safety Harbor Community Church was treated to a delicious Cinco de Mayo breakfast prepared by the pastor and his wife…unfortunately some uncooked egg casserole might have sloshed out of the dish leaving Andrew’s car smelling a little funky. Andrew and his family are traveling up to Virginia this week for his graduation. This Sunday will be the first he has not preached in 36 Sundays, but will also be the first of 7 Sundays he is not preaching between now and Thanksgiving.Lakeview celebrated Cinco de Baptisms, now if only Tim could remember everyone’s names…

It has been over a Fortnight since we have been able to record in our regular space, but we’re back in Safety Harbor, Florida!!! The Alchemy seems to be working well at Lakeview since they just held their largest new members class ever. After last weeks power surge, the sound system at Safety Harbor is Down Bad, and is being ripped out and replaced this week. We conferenced together with some of our buddies last week, and it was So High School staying up too late and catching up. Andrew went to another very different conference Thursday and Friday but left early so don’t ask him, “How Did It End?” Special shout out to say thanK you aIMee for scaring Tim after first service and causing him to tell people not to join his church… is Tim now feeling Guilty as Sin?

We’re broadcasting Pirate Radio live from the lobby of First Baptist Orlando during the Youth Pastor Summit. Tim thought they had tech issues at Lakeview, until he heard about Safety Harbor’s in service power outage. Andrew went to see the eclipse. It is Holy Week, and it is a doozy. Yesterday was (Palm) Sunday. Tim and Andrew both started a new sermon series. Lakeview bought a golf cart; Safety Harbor is renting one. We are gearing up for early services and added attendance.

We are back from spring break and Easter is rapidly approaching. Lakeview had half of their staff take the same Sunday off. Safety Harbor had their annual meeting (cause doesn’t every church have an annual meeting in March)and has now flipped their space for tomorrow’s elections. Tim went out of town with his family. Andrew’s wife went out of town without the family

Lakeview had a legit emergency in the middle of service. Andrew’s wife thought a bomb went off while he was preaching. Tim’s new youth pastor is better than he was. Safety Harbor is hosting an election and it is not going well.

Few things make for longer weekends than an unofficial national holiday. Tim and Andrew had very different plans for watching the game. Lakeview hosted a giant watch party. Safety Harbor was a ghost town all week. Andrew had a not so fun ministry first, and Tim made quite a few house calls.

Andrew is all alone in the office this week and doesn’t really know what to do with himself. Tim hosted a birthday party and executed the perfect side hug. Both Lakeview and Safety Harbor began talking through Easter prep and have two vastly different strategies. Andrew started a new series, and somehow lost the entire church email list. Tim formally welcomed a new staff member and continued telling his church how meaningless everything is.

The Gremlins attacked the soundboard at Safety Harbor yesterday at 9:59 and again at 11:02, the second time it almost seemed on purpose. Lakeview had their first-ever new members' breakfast and back-to-back baptism Sundays. Timmy returned to form as chapel speaker and Andrew got to actually experience his kid competing for a highly contested prize.

Andrew and one of his sons traveled to VA this week, but got back just in time for church on Sunday. Lakeview kicked off a new teaching series. Tim attended a camp meeting that he did not have to lead for the first time in 15 years and Safety Harbor had to implement their cold weather Sunday protocol.

We’re both the tech guys at our church, which makes Sundays with tech issues especially frustrating…both Lakeview and Safety Harbor had Sundays like that yesterday. We’re recapping the past few weeks of limited office hours and lots of family time.

It is our final show of the year, and we are doing all the Christmas things and talking about all the festivities that have already been enjoyed. Both of us had some Disney time, and the Larsens celebrated an anniversary.

We took an unintended break last week, as Tim was having his heart broken on live TV. We are in the thick of our Advent programming at both Lakeview and Safety Harbor. Tim had to reschedule an event due to weather. Andrew is attending school programs that his kids are not even in at this point (and skipping the one his firstborn is in.) We both went to Disney, and have had WAY more meetings than usual.

It was Thanksgiving, now it is Christmas. Both of our churches decorated the worship spaces for Christmas. Safety Harbor finished their Philippians series, and Lakeview started chapter 2. Andrew nearly died (his grandpa did), Tim did a wedding and played football.

It has been a week! Between dad duty and holiday ministry season gearing up, we’re exhausted. Andrew tried an experimental medical treatment on his kids and almost died performing “other duties as assigned.” Tim had back to back to back ministry nights out. Lakeview is interviewing candidates for their worship leader position, and Safety Harbor had their annual pre-Thanksgiving Thanksgiving feast.

It was Halloween, or Fall Fest, and some churches went all out, but does it even matter? We’ve had a death in the congregation at both of our churches this week, and even though the circumstances were vastly different, they have both been hard. Andrews’s church is gearing up for the pre-Thanksgiving Thanksgiving. Tim’s church got a jump on Christmas. Both Safety Harbor and Lakeview kicked off new series in Philippians.

We’re gonna come out and say it. Biblegateway is a bad website. Safety Harbor finished their Habakkuk series and Lakeview wrapped up their stewardship series. We both spent time pulling dad duty with sick kids and “other duties as assigned”. Tim is continuing his worship director search.

Some weeks in ministry are heavier than others, and this was certainly a heavy week. Lakeview dealt with a tragedy and is in the process of witnessing a miracle. Safety Harbor had a church-wide workday, that the pastor did not bother showing up for. Andrew was reminded of how good we were at being youth pastors, and Tim preached someone else’s sermon.

Sometimes you get little surprises at church, Andrew certainly got one yesterday. Tim had a rough sports week, that was punctuated by a happy Sunday…which he missed. Lakeview hosted their third annual missions weekend. Safety Harbor started a new sermon series in Habakkuk, and the timing was a bit awkward.

Both Lakeview and Safety Harbor wrapped up a sermon series and started looking ahead toward the end of the year. Tim preached his last youth group message for the foreseeable future. Andrew had a new members class and almost had a Sunday morning disaster. We’re talking schedules, meetings, sermon prep, and all the grown-up things we have to do as pastors.

We both had Disney time this weekend, and neither of us is quite recovered yet. Andrew successfully defended his doctoral research and had the title “Dr” bestowed on him for the first time (un-ironically). Lakeview keeps growing, and Tim can’t figure out why. There was a medical issue at Safety Harbor, and the elders handled it beautifully.

Turns out that people love baptisms and baby dedications. Lakeview had both on Sunday. Safety Harbor had an elder’s meeting and made some preemptive decisions. Tim’s family is adjusting to having kids at different schools for the first time ever. Andrew’s family took a post-church trip to Disney.

We’re getting ready for the Super Bowl, and by that, I mean Easter Services. We have a few different philosophies and services as a result. Episode 207: Butts, Budgets, and Building
It was a busy ministry weekend for Timmy, but he had the mental capacity to deal with it because HE IS DONE WITH SCHOOL FOREVER. We are embracing to very different styles of program-ming this Advent season, and neither church seems to mind. An-drew has school programs at three different schools this week, Tim has a daughter touring high school.

The Holidays are fully upon us, which means more activity and more responsibility in the ministry world. We are diving into the differences between writing advent sermons and regular sermons, and between writing a paper vs a sermon. Andrew got an unex-pected gift. Tim’s Jaguars put him in an exceptional mood, but that wasn’t him in the patriotic speedo.

Well, Hurricane Ian came to our neighborhood and killed power and caused havoc; for some of us at least. Lake-view had a missions weekend, and Safety Harbor had lin-gering storm issues that killed the internet. We planned on a much longer show today, but our livestream audience of dozens somehow crashed face-book, and in the middle of our broadcast, the world changed (until it gets fixed anyway.) The New Year started in heartbreaking fashion for Andrew. He lost his fantasy football championship in the final seconds of yesterday’s games. It’s our birthday show. Tim’s birthday is October 25, An-drew’s is October 27, and with show falling on the 26th, we felt like we should celebrate. We talked about what to wear, or in Tim’s case what not to wear, when presiding at a wedding or funeral. We dove into our love for the Rays, and what happens when an elders’ meeting falls on the same night as a world series game. We’re happy right about now. As Rays fans, it’s hard to think about much else, but alas, ministry continues to happen. We were each at weddings this Friday. Andrew was officiating, and Tim was side gigging at a production company. Tim lost his voice mid sermon, and Andrew couldn’t see because of sweat in his eye. We debated side hustles and burn out, talked live sound mixes, and dove into premarital counseling.

With Timmy out on a family day, Dylan moved from the couch to the big boy chair. We Talked about our church’s attempt to use coffee to lure people out of hiding. Andrew started a new series on Galatians, and realized that he isn’t good at/doesn’t really like teaching through epistles. A game went too long in youth group, so Dylan didn’t actual-ly teach. Timmy was late today, because it was a CRAZY ministry weekend. It was Lakeview church’s 25th anniversary Sunday. Huge single service event followed by food, add a time change into the mix, and you can imagine what kind of crazy it was. Andrew’s Sunday was very different. Yesterday was NOT Sunday, but this is still The Morning After. We were live from room 9 at the beau-tiful Tampa Convention Center. This afternoon were talking all things conferences, profile picture do’s and do not’s, and of course comparing conference friendships to camp hookups. After months and months of us talking about it, Lakeview Church voted Tim Miller as their new Lead Pastor, by a margin of 97%…Andrew was voted in unanimously at his church. Just saying.
We talked about the roles of lead pastors in youth ministry, and how former youth pastors make the best bosses. We also got to celebrate the longevity of several of our buddies in youth ministry.
This weekend we were at a conference about worship throughout the scriptures, and gambled on the sermons.

Today was an abbreviated show, because we have priorities…and it’s a Rays Playoff Monday.
We talked about ways and ideas to incorporate kids and students into the Sunday service. We discussed different ideas and policies that churches have, and our desires to be a truly multi generational church. Tim’s congregation is voting on him as lead pastor next Sunday morning, so things could change dramatically in the coming weeks.

This week both Tim and Andrew were asked to fill in for their youth pastors and dive back into youth ministry land. We talked about leading smaller groups as small groups instead of preaching a message to a room with only a handful of people in it.
Tim suffered from writer’s block, and we talked about the latest we’ve ever finished a sermon. Tim gets anxious the night before if it’s not done…Andrew has finished 20 minutes before church began.
We wrapped up by talking about when a youth pastor should transition to leading a church. It’s a process we’re both familiar with.

Despite our tech issues, we were back today for another fun look at what it’s like bieing in ministry…warts and all.
We both taught New Members classes last week, and both kicked off new series. For the first time since Easter, we are preaching something different from eachother. Tim is in a series on Titus, and Andrew is in Proverbs for the next month.
Tim’s church relaunched their second service, which saw an immediate uptick in attendance. Andrew’s church has been eating together after their one service. We talked pros and cons of splitting services or staying at one.

Tim is on vacation (again), but thanks to the glorys of technology, we were able to hang out and talk all things ministry with our buds. Tim andhis wife Stepjhanie invited Andrew and his family to join them in Orlando, they had a condo for them to use free of charge and ecverything, but due to some prior ministry commitments, they couldn’t go. We talked about the things we give up or chances we have passed up on for the sake of ministry.
Tim has handes over the torch in the student ministry at his church. We talked about remaining on staff but changing possitions, and how to best handle the transition with students and parents. We also dove into the fascinating world of resumes and how to end a series.

Timmy is back! Well, kinda. He was in Jacksonville, FL this morning while Andrew was in the Safety Harbor Studio, but thanks to the magic of the internet, it all worked out. Both of us were at camp this past week, and the camps couldn’t have been more different. One was thousands of students, one was dozens. One was in the actual wilderness, and one was at The Wilderness of the Smokies Resort. We talked about the pros and cons of different types of camps, camp rules, and settings.
Tim’s church wrapped up a 10 week series yesterday while Andrew’s church kicked off a new one. We talked about church after a week of camp.

Tim is still out, taking his students to camp, but Andrew was joined by Brett Eddy this morning. Brett is the Director of Student Ministries at Port City Community Church in Willmington, NC where he has served for the past 16 years. We talked about the shift in one giant student ministry camp to separate middle and high school camps, the role difference he has experienced in moving from an age group specific pastor to director over all of PCCC’s student ministries, and the unique role his church and student ministry played in the relief efforts after Hurricane Florence.

Nothing like 4th of July week to make the congregation worship America, right? Tim got an earful for the flag not being front and center. Andrew had patriotic socks and someone wearing a “Trump 45” jeresey in the middle of the livestream. Tim accidentily orchidtrated one of the greatest youth ministry events ever, “BYOF” bring your own fireworks night.
We talked about the stresses and pressure of having to dress to preach every week. We discussed how often to repeat an outfit before people start noticing. We are both working different hours this summer than we do during the school year, and have noticed the productivity difference the different hours make.
As Tim’s church continues to go through changes, on of them is a completerebranding, complete with mission and vision statements and a new logo and abreviated name. Another change is that the elders are going out of their way to make sure the spouses and families of the staff are well loved and cared for.
We debated whether or not Father’s Day gifts were worth giving out to dads in the congregation. We talked about the pros anc cons, and got some great examples of gifts and some good reasons why churches do or don’t give them out. Andrew’s church gave out bottles of Dad’s Old Fashioned RootBeer with M&M’s attaatched to look like a bow tie. Tim’s church did nothing. But Tim did seal Andrew’s last rootbeer.
Tim had a church member take him to a baseball game to tell him that they were leaving the church. We talked about the best and worst ways we have had people leave.

Tim’s breath stinks. He was informed of this right before service yesterday morning. Nothing like getting a devicive text moments before church started. That’s what happened to Timmy yesterday as he was gathering for prayer with several people from his church. Fortunately, he was given a neat little surprise from the youth team at about the same time, balancing out the see saw of a morning.
It’s VBS week at Andrew’s church. We discussed best practices and a few youth ministry hacks for a week when everyone is stretched super thin. Once again, a pastor’s social media usage was brought up. We talked about leveraging people in the church’s joy on social media, and how to discuss the topic with multiple generations and ideologies.

Tim endangerd the lives of all of his students by havig them jump in an alegator infested lake. Why? Cause of extreme bingo. We discussed ministry mishaps and dangeroues games we let kids play, and were very grateful that we’ve never been fired. Andrew’s church kicked off a 10 week series on Exodus yesterday. We talked about pulling new insight out of passages that people are very familiar with.

Ths morning we jumped into the show by talking about the extra hours we both pulled this week to make Mother’s Day happen as well as the other events happening at our churches. Andrew’s church had a VBS workday, and Tim and his elders have their first week without a scheduled meeting since early March. Andrew’s church, on the other had has not had an elders meeting since February. We talked about the amount of meetings that were necessary, and elders giving space or taking reigns of decision making.
Tim is creating a job description for a part time youth pastor. We discussed the different qualities and limitations that we’d look for or expect in a part time role. Then we closed out the show by asking how much involvement was appropriate for a lead pastor to have in a student ministry. I

What a week. Andrew was in Texas for the DYM100 Texas tour, and Tim was having a series very difficult meetings back home. Both of us were preaching this week for Palm Sunday. Tim preached a sermon based on a Mark Driscol sermon series called Vintage Jesus. Andrew preached a sermon the Doug Fields gave DYM members in January called Questions for an Incredible Journey.
We played a game that Anthony Taylor made during the DYM 100 road trip, based on preachers and sneakers, called Payless or Paymore.
Tim discussed some of the difficulties of his week, and promised to fill us all the way in on the decisions being made in a few weeks.

Today Andrew was joined by a friend of the show, the one and only Ronald Long. Ronald is the middle school pastor at Wayside Chapel in San Antonio. He also hosts the greatest middle school ministry podcast in the world, Talking Squirrels. Since we are in Texas for the DYM 100, we needed a place to record, and Doug Fields offered up his hotel room. So that’s where we set up.
We talked about the ministry days we had, with Andrew having to finish a message after a crazy busy weekend, and Ronald needing 20 minutes of fill time at the end of the message. We talked about longevity in ministry, and how to get the most out of conferences and events.

Today is a Monday following a very odd Sunday, at least it was odd at Andrew’s church. There was a noticible drop in attendance from last week to this week, but the drop all happened to be young families. Like all of them. This morning we talked about working through rough weeks. Timmy had a guest speaker scheduled for Wednesday night, and he forgot about him, but by the time Wednesday night rolled around, he sure was thankful. We talked about the ups and downs of ministry life.
Andrew’s whole family got sick over the weekend, which is especially bad since his wife runs the children’s ministry at their church. We talked about pushing through on sick days, and how days when we’re not feeling it sometimes turn out to be good days.
We wrapped up by talking about how we need to preach toward different personality types and learning styles, instead of just our own.
Things got weird and unpatriotic at the end for a few seconds.

We jumped right in this morning with one of the WILDEST stories we’ve ever shared on the Morning After Ministry Show. Tim caught two students in his youth group in the shower together, during small groups. Yeah, there were more details than that, but wow. That pretty much sums it up.
We each were chapel speakers this week. Andrew spoke in chapel at Trinity College, and Tim showed up to his kids’ school not realizing that he was the chapel speaker that morning. We talked about pulling up dropbox on the ipad with very little notice.
We wrapped up by talking about the importance of having ministry buddies you can lean on.

With Tim out of pocket today, Andrew was joined by longtime friend and mentor, Tommy Shelton. Both Tim and Andrew first served in ministry under Tommy. These days Tommy is leading a church revitalization. He has experience as a youth pastor, church planter, and now church rehabber. We talked about the difference and similarities in all three types of ministry. We also talked about sacred cows, or in Tommy’s case, sacred camels that different churches have.

What a week it has been. We discussed the different hats we wear, and the different places and ministries we are supposed to be at, sometimes at the same time. We talked about what to do when you have to preach with next to no notice, and what emergency sermon files different people utilize.
It seems to be the time of year when jobs and resumes are being posted everywhere. We discussed some of the funny things that churches look for in a hire, and the ways people get hired. We also spent an inordinate amount of time discussing the back of Andrew’s head.

We started off the show by talking about what we do when people leave the church. We discussed the idea of exit interviews when people leave the church, and whether or not people would be honest.

What a busy week! Timmy kicked off Waiting, Dating, & Mating by our buddy Frank Gil in his youth group this week. We talked about the high number of kids that come out when you let them know that sex is the topic. We talked about the high we get and feel from big numbers. We know numbers aren’t everything, but they sure feel good!
Andrew’s church started a new series, which he is adapting from an Andy Stanley Series. We talked about the work that goes into adapting something vs writing something new.

What a busy week! This weekend we got to go to Rock the Universe at Universal Studios. Between rides and awesome concerts, we were spoiled in the Youth Leader Lounges. It was a great night, and one we’re excited to experience again!
As awesome as Rock The Universe was, it made Sunday morning get here real quick. We talked what a service looks like when you are exhausted.
If you were listening a few weeks ago, you heard about the “exciting” wedding that Andrew was doing…well, it happened, and it was as exciting as it was billed. We talked some about wedding policies, and what happens when you are marrying someone from another church.
We wrapped up the show by talking about a conversation Tim had with one of our pastor buddies. We talked about how easy it is to make it look like we have it all together, when sometimes that is the furthest thing from the truth.

It was a rough weather weekend here in Central Florida. Before worship started at our churches it was a dismal 48 degrees and raining. We were expecting a pour turnout, but were pleasantly surprised by all the people who braved the weather.
We were both preaching yesterday morning, and the sermons went very differently. Tim’s was emotional and drew tears. Andrew’s was inadvertently funny and nerdy. We talked about changing a sermon mid way through or tweaking a sermon in between services.
Tim talked about the new series he started at Decrease, their weekly student ministry program. He is teaching through Bless-ed, a series Andrew wrote for his church last summer. We talked about the work that goes into making a teaching resource originally written for adults accessible for students. We also talked about what we do when a leader doesn’t show up.
Tim is teaching through a series called Bless-ed on Wednesday nights at Decrease, his church’s youth group. After youth group, the church volunteered the students to move and stack chairs for the carpets to be cleaned. We talked about fun ways that students get volunteered by others in the church.
We wrapped up the show by discussing Financial Peace University, and the disciplines that Andrew and Tim are working on in their personal lives.

When we showed up to record today, we couldn’t hep but to ntice that Andrew’s office had been transofrmed into a winter wonderland. The students at his church broke in last night and covered every surface with wrapping paper, sticky notes, balloons and Christmas lights. We talked about the imprtance of a senior pastor being approachable to the students in the church.
Tim’s parents joined his church last year, and yesterday his dad, who was a pastor for 20 plus years, was the guest preacher. We talked about the win of having your extended family involved, and some of the boundries that need to be in place.

Advent season is upon us, and our churches have already been busy. We’e had church wide activities, family ministry get togethers, and we’re just getting started.
We discussed about starting a new Christmas series, and finding points of application from stories that we all know so well. Andrew started a series on the four Fear Nots of the Christmas texts with Zechariah yesterday. Tim is doing a similar series with his students on Wednesday nights. Then we talked about the difficulties of doing Christmas services as the pastor’s family, especially if someone is sick.
Andrew brought up a dilema…a lady from a Bible study hit his car in the parking lot. The estimate is close to $1000 to fix a hole in the bumper on a car he paid $1800 for. We discussed the best way to move forward.

It sure was hard to NOT be with all of our friends this week at NYWC in St. Louis, but we each had some great ministry experiences and family time. But we miss our DYM peeps.
Andrew spoke at Tim’s youth group, and the weatherman made us change some plans. It’s hard to be at a bonfire when it is 82 degrees, but the students were excited and it was a great night. Andrew also wrapped up his church’s Jonah series. We talked about stretching series out and when to shorten or legnthen a series.
We had a question from one of our listeners about when to start pursuing another ministry position if yours is unhealthy. We talked about how to stay and how to leave well. We also talked about reasons worth leaving over and reasons to stick it out.

It is birthday week for both of us Tim turned 31, and Andrew turned 36…we are aging, but at least we’re not as old as Doug Fields. We talked about the birthday weeks we had and then dove into some ministry highs and lows.
Andrew had a great week. There was tangible momentum in multiple places in the church. He got to fill in with the youth ministry, and endeared himself to some of the older people in the church.

Despite the Jags horiffic defeat, Tim was is good spirits, and remained loyal dressed in his Jags gear. We opened talking about what we meant to talk about last week…newbies. Tim’s church just did a newcomers lunch. Andrew’s church gives out mugs, and one of his former youth ministries had a separate lounge area for new comers. We discussed what worked well and hasn’t worked well in welcoming and assimilating newbies.
Andrew had baptism Sunday. Two young men were baptized and then welcomed into the membership of the church. Unfortunately, his tie also dipped into the baptistry, and then dripped all over the front of his pants. Everyone laughed and his feelings were hurt.
Andrew is praying at the City of Safety Harbor’s city council meeting tonight. We talked about being involved with civic events and causes. We also talked about the angles we use to make our sevices and events look fuller than they are.

For the first time in what feels like forever, it was just the two of us this morning. Get this. We actually talked about what our past wek of ministry looked like, it sounds like a great concept for a show.
Both of our churches our in church-wide campaigns. Our sermons and small groups are linked up and studying the same thing. Tim’s church has also incorperated the student ministry into their campaign. We talked about the pros and cons of this structure, and discussed how long a model like this could be sustained. We also talked about what to do when you’re a little less excited that other in your church are about a campaign or series.
Tim’s student ministry is going on a winter retreat/ski trip this January and opened up sign ups this past Wedneday. He pulled a page from Frank Gil, and offered a special one day only price and included a hoodie with all first day sign ups. The trip was completely sold out in 12 hours!

We are back from DYM200, and it was refreshing and exhausting. It was so wonderful to meet first timers and reconnect with some of our favorite people. Episode 33: Preachy Teach Stuff and a Life of Moderation
Over the weekend we had the chance to participae in the 2nd Annual Church Safety and Liability Conference. We moderated a pannel discussion with people who were far more serious, and armed, than we were. Andrew shot a bunch of people in simulator that went through different church safety scenarios. It was determined that he should never have a gun.
This morning we got to talk about some of the thngs we have been preaching lately. A few weeks ago we were both preaching the same sermon at the same time on a Sunday morning. We have worked together and collaberated on youth ministry sermons for years, but this was a first. We were literally texting eachother at 7am Sunday morning to make sure our messages were as good as they could be.
We talked about modifying teaching resources to better fit our personal preaching styles, or a specific ministry context, and had a fun discussion in the facebook comments about how long a sermon should be. We all agreed that 900 words was too many.

Episode 32: Security Matters and Draining the Tank

We have been busy. September brings with it all kinds of new beginnings in church world. Andrew’s church began a new 6 week sermon series called BLESS that aims at developing a culture of evangelism in the church. We were expecting to have baptisms this Sunday morning, but the family of the two young men being baptized decided against it. When Andrew went to drain the baptistry (read horse trough here) he got soaked, because he is a dummy.. The highight of this experience was the kindness and grace shown by a few ladies in the church. It is amazing to watch what kindness can accomplish.
Jim Howard came on to not just discuss the Church Safet and Liability Conference, but also to discuss serious safety issues facing churches. He touched on the importance of vigilance, and the need for the ongoing scandal in the Catholic Church to be handled correctly, because all churches need to be trustworthy and accountable. We talked about particular issues in churches, namely with children and students. Jim stressed the importance of separate spaces, especially restrooms, for each age group.

This morning we are both excited and exhausted. Excited because we are both back live and in person for the first time in several weeks, but we’re a bit sleepy cause we were out late since our homie Josh Griffin was in town! We are so excited that NYWC is going to be in our back yard next November.
This morning we talked about the real stinker Timmy had to deal with at church yesterday…someone pooped at church. We dove into the messy sides of ministr and how being wiling to do what noone else wants to do gives you buy in and credability with your people.

With Tim on his way to California to celebrate a decade of marriage to the wonderful Stephanie Miller, Andrew was joined this morning by Justin Halog. Justin is the director of student ministries at Faith Community Church in Seminole, FL. Which happens to be the possition that Andrew held for six years before becoming the pastor at Safety Harbor Community Church.
We discussed Justin’s first year in full time ministry and some things that he wished he would have known heading in. We talked about things that surprised him and the tings that went, at least relatively, how he expected them to go.
When Justin arrived at Faith, the ministry staff had gone from 5 to one in a period of just a few months. We discussed what was it like coming into a church that was in transition and what things are most different now from when he arrived. The church now has a strong lead pastor and is pursuing five key values that have defined a vision for the church.
We turned a bit more personal, and discussed what it was like replacing me (Andrew) and if I could have made Justin’s transition easier. We discussed the difficulty I faced from the youth pastor before me, and how some things need to be learned.

We were back in action this morning in the SHCC studio (Andrew’s office) with a whole bunch to talk about. Tim’s student ministry held their camp reunion/silent disco party on Wednesday night. We talked about the pros of hosting a “camp reunion” and the additional students it brings out. Silent Events provided the gear for the party. They came in cheaper than $10 a person, and were great to work with.
Andrew was on vacation for the past two weeks, and went to The Refuge Church in Russleville, AR last Sunday. We discussed whether or not to go to church on vacation, what kind of churches we look for on vacation, and why it can be a win.
The big news that we discussed was that a letter went out to the congregation at Lakeview Community Church naming our own Timothy Allen Miller as the next Sr Pastor. There is no timeframe for the transition as Tim’s sr pastor is not approaching retirement for the next few years, but the church now knows that the elders are planning on Tim taking over n a few years. We discussed what this means for him, and the church moving forward, but don’t worry…we’ll still do the show.

Today we were joined by one of our favorite DYM authors and DYM Podcast Network hosts, our Friend Derry Prenkert. Derry hosts a show called “My Third Decade” where he talks about what he has learned in his 22 plus years at the same church. Today we were talking to Derry about camp. He is currently in his SIXTH camp of the summer.
We talked the pros and cons of hosting and running your own camp vs bringing your students to a camp. Derry and his team have been running the same camp for 20 years. It started with 20 students and now serves several hundred. Tim just returned from a week of Student Life Camp, and discussed what was beneficial for his leaders and students about attending a camp that was all planned out by another party.
Both of our churches have been in sermon series on prayer. Andrew finished his series by discussing Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane Tim was preaching on Jesus’ prayers as well. We discussed serom schedules and the fact that this summer is almost over as far as schedules are concerned. We also got new stickers from StickerMule and they are awesome!

Tim was out being a youth pastor this morning, taking his kids to camp. He’ll be back next week, and we’ll have Derry Prenkert with us to talk all things camp. You won’t want to miss it! Today we had Riley Lester in the hot seat. We talked about his weird path to full time employment, impending changes, and social evolution. It was a great show.
Riley is the high schooll pastor, and only student ministry staffer, at Cross Pointe Church, a large multi site church in Georgia. He’s been there a year. It is also Riley’s first full time job in church world, despite finishing a church ministries degree four years ago. Riley felt God calling him to a specific kind of church setting, so instead of taking the first job he was offered, he volunteered and interned at churches that he would want to attend. This led to a year long residency and eventually a full time position, but it was certainly the path less taken.
Riley is also about to get married. For the past year he has been in Georgia while his fiance, Savannah, has been in North West Arkansas. We talked about how his relationships and availability to his students would be shifting in the coming weeks and months.
Finally, Riley and I (Andrew) talked about our relationship, and how it has changed from him being a student of mine, to now being one of my closest friends. We talked about the benefits of long term ministry, and why discipling individual students matters.

Episode 22: One Show, Two Locations…cause sometimes you need to go to Toy Story Land.
This morning was the first time we have ever done a complete show from two separate locations. To be honest, we’re still kind of shocked that it worked so well, but we are so glad that it did! Andrew was in the regular office/studio while Tim was off at the brand new Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios (using fast passes that Andrew scored for him when he was there on Friday.)
It was an especially busy week for Tim, as he had five straight ministry nights. Tuesday he led a parenting class, Wednesday night was on of his youth groups big summer “decrease” nights, Thursday he had a camp leader meeting, and Friday/Saturday he had a middle school boys all nighter. Thank God for the flexability of schedule that allowsyou to take your family to Disney on a Monday after a day like that!
Andrew had one of the stranger requests of his ministry career on Thursday. “Can you do a quickie wedding so that my clients wife doesn’t have to testify against him tomorrow?” He said no, even though it would have paid $200.
With the busy summer season fully upon us, the next few weeks of shows are going to be a ton of fun. We’ll have guest hosts, and be live from different locations. Don’t miss out!

Tim was out side hustling again this week, so he missed church for the second time in three weeks. We talked about what different churches require for their ministry staff attendance on Sundays, how many Sundays they can miss for personal reasons, and how many can be missed for ministry reasons. Many of the people watching expressed that they were only allowed to miss two Sundays per year. Andrew, in his previous church, missed one out of a hundred Sundays, which was way not healthy! One of the more healthy policies either of us have experienced was that every staff member was REQUIRED to miss one weekend a quarter.
Summer is here and budgets are tight. Every church has issues with summer finances. We talked about ways to get around spending freezes, how to make up for low funds, and how the summer budget affects student ministry more than the rest of the church.
We also talked about summer events. With weekly youth ministry being toned down these months, the pressure is on for big events to be stellar. Tim is having a video game truck show up at his church on wednesday night!

And we’re back….after a week long mission trip in the little village of La Lista in the south west corner of the Dominican Republic, we are glad to be back in our regular air conditioned recording space. We had a fantastic time on our trip, but just because we were gone for a week, the ministry at our home churches didn’t stop. When we got home we still had all of our weekend responsibilities, including preaching, tech, a wedding, and welcoming a new staff member. Andrew’s computer died late on Saturday night, and he had to write a sermon from his phone. He also did a wedding in two languages this Saturday. Tim still had all of his oversight responsibilities, as well as middle school youth group. Needless to say, we are tired.
We cannot say enough good things about Praying Pelican Missions. Their stateside staff and Dominican staff were absolutely wonderful. If you are even thinking about planning a trip, check out https://www.prayingpelicanmissions.org, and ask for Mary Holsman. She’s the greatest.

It was the last Wednesday night of programming for the summer. Tim talked about how this summer’s calendar will be different from previous summers, because the goal is to hav small group leaders planning and leading events for their small group.
It is VBS week at Andrew’s church. We talked the pros and cons of VBS, and why some churches shy away while others embrace it. We are taking our VBS with us to the Dominican next week! We talked about the mission trip we will be on next week in the Dominican village of La Lista. We get to partner with a church and pastor there that we have been ministering with for three years, and are super excited to see how God has moved since we were last there. It’s Memorial Day. The offices are closed, but we’re still here recording Episode 18. Since it is a holiday weekend, senior pastors expect lower attendance, which means youth pastors everywhere are asked to preach. We were joined today by Alexis Freedman. Alexis is a former student of Andrew’s and is on full time staff with Young Life in Orlando. We asked Alexis about the differences between traditional youth ministry and Young Life, and she shared the limitation that YL has. She stressed that the ultimate goal of Young Life was to get students following Jesus and plugged into local churches.

It was an exhausting week for both of us, nut for very different reasons. Tim went to Chicago and back, and Andrew had about six months of senior pastor responsibilities dumped into one week. This week Andrew had an unscheduled elder’s meeting, prayed at a county wide national day of prayer event, and then had to do back to back funerals on the same day. We talked about some of what goes into funerals, and the value of having a good relationship with a reputable funeral director. We also talked about what it is like to have to finish a sermon late on Saturday night because of the demands of a crazy ministry week.
Tim had a major tech issue at youth group, and that brought on a conversation about funny tech issues. Our favorite was a church sound board that would occasionally pick up and broadcast a Spanish radio station during worship.
We closed the show by discussing what we can do as pastors to set up guest communicators to win. We talked about giving them plenty of advance notice, going through church culture and expectations, and taking as much off their plates as possible.

After several years out of pocket, Timmy made his triumphant return to the studio and was very excited to talk about his Jaguars and a few other topics near and dear to his heart. We recapped last week’s show and talked about the impact of having smart women around.
We talked about how to wrap up one teaching series and promote another. We discussed the benefits and difficulties of a long series, and we debated how long a teaching series should be.
We changed the tone and then discussed family time. Both of us have a lot of kids, and time with the family is crucial. We talked about strategies to spend time with our whole families as well as the importance of spending one on one times with each of our kids.
We talked weddings and the difference between each and every wedding service. We discussed the difference in ceremony types and audiences, and the importance of incorporating the gospel into each one.
We closed the show by talking about church events and calendars, and the type of events that are draining to the staff and membership.

Episode 13 Intern(ons) and Intern(offs)
A few weeks ago we spent an entire show talking about side hustles, and this morning Tim was off in Vegas for one of those side hustles. But The Morning After Ministry Show must go on, so Andrew’s wife Melissa is filled in as co-host this morning. Melissa is currently leading the children’s ministry at Safety Harbor Community Church, has spent a decade or so as a small group leader, and spent a formative summer interning in a large church’s children’s ministry.
We opened the show by talking about a series called “Hurt” that we released on DYM a few years ago. We have redone the look and feel of the series to minister to student and resource ministries who are addressing issues brought up by 13 Reasons Why. The news season comes out in a few weeks, and we are giving the series away to anyone who leaves us a rating and review on itunes. Since the topic of the show today was internships, we brought on Allison Williams. Allison is a youth minister in Indiana, and has written an incredible resource for anyone supervising interns. We discussed the do’s and don’ts of leading interns, and the amount of work that goes into a healthy internship program. Allison’s said that Healthy internships:1 Are more work than benefit to your ministry 2. Have clear roles and expectations 3. Are always being evaluated 4. Expose the intern to as many areas of the church as possible 5. Set the intern up for long term success. While Unhealthy internships…1. Make the intern an errand-runner or coffee guy 2. Never let the intern take the lead 3. Never talk about money 4. Let the intern be bored 5. Shelter the intern from the pain and realities of ministry.
Next Andrew played a conversation that he had with our friend Collin this weekend. Both Andrew and Collin spent significant time interning at high profile churches, and neither internship turned out the way either of them expected it to. However, just because they were different than they expected them to be, the internships were both formational, and look good on resumes.

Today we were privileged to have Jim Howard of Trinity Security Allies, the industry leader in church safety, in with us. Jim is a retired police detective who now devotes his time to helping churches set up and maintain safety teams and policies.
We opened the show by talking about a series called “Hurt” that we released on DYM a few years ago. We have redone the look and feel of the series to minister to student and resource ministries who are addressing issues brought up by 13 Reasons Why. The news season comes out in a few weeks, and we are giving the series away to anyone who leaves us a rating and review on itunes. After discussing the ups and downs of our weeks, we brought on Jim to do a Q&A about standards and procedures of church safety. We discussed the tragedy of Southerland Springs and how future tragedies can be prevented. We discussed the importance of having policies in place before an incident, and the importance of protecting our children above all else.

We opened the show by discussing some relational issues. The harsh reality is that interpersonal relationship fallout carries over to the church. As much as we love people while they are going through relationship issues, our mind can go to “how will this affect the church?” It is hard to expect people to serve when they are dealing with serious turmoil in their lives! But the church still needs people to serve.
This morning we had the opportunity to talk with our friend Ronald Long about how to get students involved in serving in the church. The question that he asks is “what am I doing that a student could be doing?” He gave tips to having students serve in the student ministry, but also in the whole church. We talked about the amount of work that goes in to equipping students to serve and lead, but then discussed the value for the church for the students that comes from them serving.
We closed the show by talking about deconversions; people leaving the faith all together. We specifically referenced the statements by Spencer Chamberlain from the band Underoath. He claims, among other things, that Christianity ruined his life. We talked about the importance of having the freedom to mess up, and the reality of grace being messy.

Episode 10: Easter Recap and the Side Hustle Show
This morning we dove into all things Holy Week. We talked Maundy Thursday vs Good Friday service, community service vs local church service, and everything that goes into an Easter service. This was Andrew’s first Easter as lead pastor, and he talked about what made it easier than his last year as a youth pastor. Tim was running tech in three services and organizing volunteers. It was a great Easter.
Our main block of time was spent discussing side hustles, the jobs we take that give us the funds to live and have fun! Tim side hustles for DYM, teaches on Fridays at his kids school, gives drum lessons, and works part time for a video production company. Andrew writes for DYM and performs weddings and funerals for just about anyone who asks. We came up with a list of side hustle pro tips…
-Monetize your skills, get paid for what you’re good at (Tim is a good drummer, so drum lessons make sense)
-Double dip when you can. (Andrew’s Easter message was a done months in advance for DYM, and made Easter week way easier because it was already done)
-Do something you’re passionate about, otherwise it won’t last
-Fall in love with the problem, because the solutions will change, but the problem will always be there.

Show Notes Episode 009: A conversation with Sam Pettersen, and West Side Safety Harbor Story
Today’s show was packed! We had a great interview with our friend and host of the DYM Create Podcast Sam Pettersen. We also finally announced the winner of our Day at Disney Contest!
Tim was preaching in the main service at his church for the second week in a row, which made a busy week even busier! Andrew had a conversation with a woman from his church that wishes that the church would take a more progressive view on LGBTQ issues. We discussed the balance and tension of being both too progressive for some and too conservative for others.
We talked about how to deal with other churches in your community who may or may not want to work with you. How do you protect the mission of your church without trampling or diminishing the mission of other churches? Can you coexist peacefully when one church doesn’t consider the ministries of others?
We spent a few minutes talking with Sam Pettersen about ways to win on Instagram. He suggested that we use social media to showcase personality and not as a bulletin board. He gave great tips on the types of posts that best engage with Gen Z. We talked about ways to engage the whole church and also just reach out to students. Tim had a Wednesday night where everything went wrong, and that was OK. Even though 75% of his leaders couldn’t be there, and attendance was low, it was still a powerful night with his students!

Andrew got some devastating news: the church needs a new roof. Just a few days later though, God provided and a member in the church who recently died left a portion of the estate to pay for the roof!
We talked with two of our best ministry buddies; Riley Lester and Collin Hoke. They talked about their ministries, follow up after big events, and changing up key programming.
We were both preaching this Sunday, and God worked in big ways! Its been a good week, and we can’t wait for next week!

We have both had a few wild ministry weeks in a row, so we cashed in some comp time. This morning we are at Disney with our families again, this time we are at the International Flower and Garden Festival at Epcot. It’s way manlier than it sounds. We discussed practical ways to make time with families a priority especially since ministry isn’t a 9-5 gig. We also talked about push back and criticism we have experienced for making family time a priority and how we have dealt with it.

This morning we dove into the craziness of our busy weeks. We talked about managing weeks where several ministry events and calendars collide. We also talked about dealing with unforeseen issues during a ministry week, and balancing ministry responsibilities with the rest of life.
Both of us had preaching responsibilities on Sunday. Tim preached from Ezekiel on getting a new heart, while wearing preaching shoes. Andrew concluded his five week series in Joshua by preaching on the sun standing still in Joshua 10. We were broadcasting LIVE from the happiest place on earth, Walt Disney World. Our wives and kids were with us, and we were only interrupted by fireworks one time! We discussed our mutual love for Disney, and our ministry weeks, then we made two HUGE announcements on today’s show.
The first is that we are now a part of the Download Youth Ministry Podcast Network. We are so honored and excited to be a part of the DYM family. DYM has meant so much to both of us and our ministries. It just feels right to be adding our show to their network. Tim’s wife think we text too much. Andrew doesn’t understand video games. Apparently bath bombs and sugar scrubs are a thing. Sometimes the weeks when you think nothing is being accomplished turn out to be the most fruitful, and partnerships with other ministries are so life giving.
