I started beekeeping a decade ago. The reasons why I started are different from the reasons I would start. Now, if someone asked me how to get started, I try to persuade them not to even think about it. I tell them it's not a good idea. I'm not trying to weed out the people who really aren't dedicated. I just think it's not a hobby for most people. Even so I'd love it.

You know what time it is, it's the beginning of the month and we're going to review the monthly planting guide for February.
It's January 2021 and this is going to be a big year for those of us living the urban farmer Life. The silver lining of the pandemic was staying home and spending a bunch of time starting seeds, growing food, and saving seeds. Let's get started with the monthly planting guide.
It's wintertime in Southern California and it's a little chilly. Luckily we can plant all year round so here's the list of veggies that you can start planting from seed and transplants even though it's December.
It's December and we can still plant here in Southern California. Let's discuss what can be transplanted and sown from seed. We'll also touch on frost considerations.
The beginning of the month is a great time to review what to plant and plan for the next month. It's finally warming up and August can be a tricky time to plant so planning is key to summer and fall success.

Seeds are magical packages of life. But I've been disappointed too many times to count with seeds that never seem to germinate. Well, this week I just had my biggest germination win and I can't wait to tell you what happened.

Carrot seeds can be so tricky to get going. I thought I found the secret to success but unfortunately I was surprised to find that I was beaten again.
I've been waiting patiently for these DiCicco broccoli seed to germinate. I figured they had sat around for too long and were a lost cause but hope won out and I have some good news to report on today's growing journal.
Have you grown turnips before? Well this is my first time ever and I'm so excited because I've never seen a seed germinate so quickly. I can't wait to tell you about what happened.
I bought several herbs and 6 packs of veggies that needed to go into the ground ASAP. No procrastination! The soil is pretty sad so I needed to add worm castings and compost. Let's learn how to grow cilantro. I've never had good luck with cilantro but this year is going to be different. I can't tell you how many times I've tried to start cilantro seeds. I bought a huge bag of cilantro seeds thinking that i would be planting rows of cilantro every week so we would have a steady supply. I can honestly say that I have never had a single seed sprout from what i can tell. I have always planted directly into the ground and this year I've committed to try and sprout and be a better student of my seeds and I think it's starting to pay off.
