On today’s show, I’ll speak to filmmaker Jalena Keane-Lee about her documentary “Standing Above the Clouds”. This is the ongoing story about the fight against the construction of the Thirty Meter Telescope on Mauna Kea in Hawai’i.
“Standing Above the Clouds was created through a collaborative process with our film protagonists. Through making this film, our team aimed to re-imagine the documentary form to be a healing process that returned agency to the community featured in our film through a trauma informed practice of affirmative consent. We worked closely with our onscreen collaborators at every step of the process and have taken great care to mitigate any legal, emotional, or cultural harm that releasing a film might cause. It is our team’s great privilege and honor to have been invited into the Mauna Kea protector community and into the lives and homes of the families you see in our film.”

The film is an intimate journey through the women’s lives both on and off the mountain. It explores the physical and emotional toll of sustaining a grassroots movement. After nine months of living on the mountain, it gifts each woman with hope, strength and the understanding that victory is in standing in unity for sacred places where healing occurs through the sisterhood they have created along the way.

In 1971, John Francis, known the world over as ‘Planetwalker,’ witnessed an oil tanker collision in the San Francisco Bay. The sight of oiled birds on the shoreline caused him to give up motorized transport and rely solely on his own two feet. Months after that he took a vow of silence convinced that listening rather than adding fuel to any fire was the way ahead.
The documentary PLANETWALKER: The Inner Magic of Dr. John Francis focuses on the period of John’s life from the oil spill through his meandering 20-year journey across the States where he resumes speaking to work on oil spill legislation with the US Coast Guard. During this time, it seemed like the whole world, every creed and color, saw John pass by and interacted with him if only fleetingly. By tracking some of these people down, the film explores the weblike and sometimes deeply personal consequences of John’s decades of pilgrimage.
About the filmmakers:
Dominic Gill is a former biologist turned filmmaker. He began his filmmaking career by selling his house, buying a bicycle, and riding 20,000 miles from Alaska to Argentina. His film on the subject, TAKE A SEAT, was released in 2011 on ITV4 to critical acclaim. It was distributed to over 45 countries, winning the Special Jury Prize at Banff Film Festival.
Nadia Gill has been creating content in the outdoor space since 2011. Formerly an attorney, she decided to pursue a career in filmmaking after meeting her directing partner Dominic Gill. Together they formed Encompass Films and produced two seasons of a travel adventure series titled “Take A Seat: Sharing a Ride Across America”. It was distributed by NBCUniversal. Over the next few years under her direction, Encompass Films built a branded clientele including Red Bull, Timbuk2, Black Diamond Equipment, and more.

On today’s show, I’ll speak to award winning, investigative journalist Rebecca Raney. Her her latest article in U. S. Right To Know (usrtk.org) discusses the fudged numbers surrounding the nationwide bee population.
In her article entitled, “Are the Bees Okay or Not. USDA Bee Colony Numbers Disputed”, Rebecca Raney states:
“Beekeepers and honey producers are disputing a federal honeybee census estimate of 3.8 million colonies in the United States in 2022 – a record number for the nationwide count. That estimate showed a 35 percent increase from the estimate of 2.8 million colonies in 2017. The report drove headlines claiming that U.S. bee farms are “buzzing” and that bees are “flourishing again.”
To beekeeping advocates, inflated numbers of bee colonies – a prominent statistic on bee health – can undermine efforts to get funding to improve colony health. To conservationists, high-profile reports of record numbers of bee colonies in the face of a well-documented trend of insect extinctions complicate the job of maintaining public awareness about food security and the effects of pesticides.”

On today’s show, I’ll speak to physicist Dr. Alec Feinberg on how cities can instantly be ten degrees cooler.
Dr. Feinberg has a Ph.D. from Northeastern University in Physics. He currently does volunteer climate modeling to help out on the climate crisis. His climate work has focused on urbanization heat flux contributions to global warming, re-radiation modeling for the global mean Earth’s energy budget, and the development of solar geoengineering equations for solar radiation modification to reverse global warming trends. He has published in all of these areas focusing on physics based modeling methods.

On today’s show, Media Matters for America‘s climate and energy senior researcher Evlondo Cooper is back to discuss more of his findings from the 2023 climate coverage by corporate media or lack thereof.
A new analysis from Media Matters’ Climate and Energy Program found that coverage of environmental justice stories on morning and nightly news shows on ABC, CBS, and NBC suffered a decrease in the total number of segments in 2023, airing just 9 segments about environmental impacts, regulations, or health hazards that included a mention of a socially marginalized community. This is down from 12 segments in 2022 and 19 segments in 2021.
We’ll switch gears and get an education on the double hatching of cicadas from University of Connecticut professor Dr. Chris Simon.
Of all the creatures that are a marker for healthy biodiversity, one of the best examples is the cicada. This spring, two large broods of periodical cicadas—one in the Midwest that emerges every 13 years and one in the Southeast that emerges every 17 years—will come out at the same time.

Today on A Rude Awakening, I’ll speak to GRAIN’s Indonesia-based international coordinator Kartini Samon on the commodification of heirloom seeds through the UPOV – Union of Protection of New Plant Varieties. GRAIN is bringing to light how the UPOV is trying to control seeds in the Global South and beyond.
Correspondingly, we’ll switch gears in the second segment to the first of many conversations about the small-scale farmers of sustainable cotton in the Global South. I’ll start that discussion with Rajneesh Vishwakarma, project lead at India-based organization Srijan.

Forest Defenders Jackson Demonstration State Forest, Fort Bragg, California, in Mendocino County. This short call to action film features some of the tree defenders, people taking direct action to prevent more logging in the state forest. Relevant forestry research link, re the harm of cutting down trees, as it increases fire risks and causes our carbon footprint to go up, warming the planet. Jackson Demonstration State Forest, North Coast, California, is being heavily logged under the state agency CalFire approved Timber Harvest Plans. This logging increases wildfire risk and silt runoff into a remnant salmon run in Noyo River. The state forest has great value for recreational tourism. The slash and small trees not worth logging are left behind, increasing fire risks, opening the canopy, drying out the soil further, and reducing the water drops from the canopy condensation which drips on to the forest floor. Jackson is on the unceded ancestral lands of the indigenous people in the area, the Pomo. The Pomo and their brothers and sisters are calling for a moratorium of the logging in Jackson forest. An inspired and poetic portrait of a place and its people, MANZANAR, DIVERTED: WHEN WATER BECOMES DUST follows intergenerational women from three communities who defend their land, their history and their culture from the insatiable thirst of Los Angeles. In this fresh retelling of the LA water story, Native Americans, Japanese-American WWII incarcerees and environmentalists form an unexpected alliance to preserve Payahuunadü (Owens Valley), “the land of flowing water.” Featuring breathtaking photography and immersive soundscapes, the film recounts more than 150 years of history, showing how this distant valley is inextricably tied to the city of Los Angeles. It reveals the forced removals of two peoples–the Nüümü (Paiute) and the Newe (Shoshone) who were marched out of the Valley in the 1860s by the US Army and the Japanese Americans who were brought here from their West Coast homes and incarcerated in a World War II concentration camp. Water lured outsiders in and continues to fuel the greed which has sucked this once lush place dry. Filmed over five years, MANZANAR, DIVERTED captures stunning and intimate imagery of this valley, combined with archival gems and careful research to narrate this epic story of the American West. It begins before colonizers came to the valley and then shows how the US Army and setters forced out the Nüümü and the Newe; how the Los Angeles Aqueduct sucked the Valley dry; how incarcerated Japanese Americans made the land green again; how Patsiata / Owens Lake became a huge health hazard and how this Valley now bears the pain of these stories and the consequences of losing water to diversion. Manzanar is the name of the former concentration camp that was constructed where an apple orchard community had thrived before the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) took it over. Now, it has become a national historic site where its annual pilgrimage unifies descendants of those incarcerated and activists who strive for social justice. In a David and Goliath fight, Japanese Americans living in Los Angeles and Native Americans and ranchers from the Valley form a coalition that stops construction of a massive LADWP solar facility across the Valley from the historic site. The film offers a hopeful message of how communities can come together to overcome histories of oppression and halt further development and monetization of a land.
