You will never be younger than you are the day you retire, so don't sit too soon! These words definitely reflect our guest this episode. Virginia (Ginny) Richter and I have a history! She was my boss in South Texas and I had the great privilege of teaching her son when he was in first grade (now a successful attorney)! It was so much fun talking to her about her retirement adventure and we know you will enjoy it also (and may be inspired to do your own).

Curt and I agree on many things such as dinner plans, vacation destinations, and child rearing techniques. This might be why we are such a good fit as a couple! This episode, Get Your S#!t Together, is one of those decisions. We both believe it is probably one of the most important episodes of our AdventuRetired anthology because we are discussing the legal papers ALL of us should have in place for our loved ones after we are gone and before!
At AdventuRetired we tell you to "don't sit too soon" "gray and away" "live your retired life" and many other inspirational quotes, but this episode is more than a quote. This episode talks to us and tells us that we need to get our S#!t together earlier than later in this wonderful life of retirement. The raised bed way of gardening not only saves the back, but it also limits the weeding for these active retirees! And the cherry (tomato) on the top is the most amazing, delicious garden produce just waiting for you to enjoy!

What better way to celebrate travel again then by starting a new tradition that we now are going to call "Happy Birthday to Us!" Yes, we have decided from now on to spend our birthdays (I'm three days older, but ya know I look much younger than my handsome guy") somewhere new and fun! It might be down the road a bit to a local BnB or somewhere far away! At our age, every birthday is a blessing!
This first birthday bash was to a city where both of us have wanted to visit for a long time! Nashville, Tennessee, home of country music and more! One of the many jobs retired people take on is downsizing their homes or the homes of their elderly parents either when they move into a senior living center or when they pass away.
This can be an huge undertaking with lots of stress.
What do we keep? What do we throw away? Who gets what? Who wants what? Does someone want this antique dresser from Great Uncle Fred? Who wants or where do I leave my favorite collections?
These are just a few of the questions we asked Kathy Randall , a professional organizer, who is retired herself, but still taking a few special clients with their quest to downsize.

Happy anniversary to us!Hard to believe that just one year ago our first podcast episodes dropped into the podcast libraries of all major podcast hosts ! Our vision for this podcast has always been to inspire others at or near retirement age to "Live Your Retired Life" ! We appreciate our guests who share their retirement journeys to help in this inspiration! We never dreamt that we would have so many downloads in one year and be in the Top 20% of podcasts due to these numbers and we have never advertised or earned a dime!!!
Podcasts are relatively new to our age and older people. We are finding that retired people don't have the expertise that the Millennials and Gen Xers do in downloading and subscribing to podcasts. Curt and I have only been podcast listeners for the last five years, but we love them. This is just one more learning curve for the generation who grew up with dial phones with party lines attached to the wall with a cord!
Who would have thought we would become hosts to our own show???? Thanks to all of our subscribers and downloaders for listening to these adventures! You have motivated us and have allowed us to come into your lives with your retirement stories. Also thank you to all of our special guests! You are the real stars of our show and our podcast is successful because you took the time to talk to us and tell us of your amazing adventures in retirement!
We have learned many lessons along the way and we are still learning! Who knew that meeting that stranger in a McDonald's parking lot a year ago and purchasing his podcast equipment would lead to such a fun and successful retirement hobby for us!
Happy Anniversary AdventuRetired!

After visiting with Sofia and Michael we realize that retirements can inspire us in different ways. What is important to understand is that we all have our own path to retirement travel. Camping brings out the best in people. Whether you are there for the fresh air, quiet relaxation from a busy job, exploring a new area, or just there because you love it, camping is an awesome way to spend your retirement. Becoming a park host is not hard, but there are some very specific steps that you must complete to be hired. And once you take a park job, the camping perks are the best!

Have you heard about Door County, Wisconsin? Curt and I were totally surprised to learn about this wonderful place that is only a couple states away from Iowa! Door County sounds just like the kind of vacation that I adore, shopping, relaxing, beaches, eating, REPEAT!
In this episode we talk to Joyce and Pat Schrauth of Bancroft, Iowa, who have a second home there and a deep love for this beautiful area in Northern Wisconsin.
Visiting Scotland was a dream come true for both of us! Curt got to knock off his bucket list to see and walk on the "Old Course" at St. Andrews and I got to experience some of the most beautiful castles ! You need to visit this beautiful country at least once in your lifetime!
Does the idea of retiring in a foreign country sound like something you'd like to do? Meet our wonderful guests, Celine and Glen Collins, who decided that is just what they dreamed of doing. After retiring from high level, fast paced careers, this couple packed up two suitcases each and moved to beautiful Kilkenny, Ireland. They enlighten us with the story of their downsizing for their big move, and the reasons they picked Kilkenny to live their best retirement story. We were blessed to meet up with them when we visited Ireland last fall and now have great friends from the city with the Medieval Mile!
Ireland, the beautiful, windy, and wild country has always been top on my bucket list. Like so many others who have visited this beautiful land, to spend time here is a step back in history. Curt gave in and we planned for a wonderful trip here in October 2019 to visit castles, ruins, and the gorgeous Cliffs of Moher. Along the way, we were immersed in history and romance and met some wonderful new friends. Everyone needs a little Ireland in their soul!
Have you ever wondered what your retirement adventure would look like? Maybe you thought you'd travel, or maybe you thought you'd volunteer some. Both are exactly what this retired couple from Maryland do in their retirement. They volunteer for NOMADS.
NOMADS stands for Nomads on a Mission Active in Divine Service and is a ministry of the United Methodist Church. When Rodney and Tammy Ripley retired, they knew that volunteering was going to be part of their retirement journey. As we learn in this episode to be a NOMAD all you need is an RV (or some sort of camper) and a servant's heart. As part of the NOMADS organization, Tammy and Rodney travel for a three week mission trip in the United States with others to perform a service several times a year.
Are you as tired as we are of the phrases, "in these uncertain times" "now more than ever" and "the new normal"??? Blah, Blah, Blah!!! We decided to take back our retirement the best way we could for now with a " micro adventure." What exactly is a "micro adventure" and "how can I sign up" you might ask? It's easy, just draw a circle on a map that encompasses about a 100 mile radius around your home and look for somewhere or something new to discover! This type of adventure can last a day, a weekend, or even a few days during the week with no other crowds (big advantage of retirement), and all you do is get into your car and go! You will be amazed what is close by that you haven't toured or discovered before!
We love Frank Lloyd Wright architecture and we were amazed to learn that a small city less than 100 miles from our lake was home to two Frank Lloyd Wright properties built in his "Prairie School" period. The city of Mason City, Iowa, itself is known in the mid-west for some of the most beautiful and unique architecture in the homes that line the streets around the Historical Park Inn.
Mason City is also the birthplace of Meredith Wilson, creator of "Music Man." The streets downtown are home to many sculptures honoring this legend. You can also tour his birthplace home and the museum next to it. Mason City is truly a gem of a city hidden among the corn fields!
To top if off, just down the road about six miles you can visit and tour two of Iowa's and our country's musical giants in Clear Lake, Iowa...the crash site and memorial for the "Day the Music Died" and the Surf Ballroom where Buddy Holly, JP Richardson "The Big Bopper", and Ritchie Valens played their last concert in 1959.
So come along and join us and then go plan your own "micro adventure!" We would love to hear about it!!!
Maybe you don't dream of BBQ ribs or brisket smoked on a grill of pecan or mesquite wood...but Curt and I sure do. BBQ joints in Texas are some of the best, and every weekend ordinary men stand around their precious pits grilling! Grilling over coals and wood is a right a passage for many young men (and a few good women too). Many men are judged by the size of their BBQ pit! When we moved to Iowa to retire, we brought two grills with us! One can never own too many grills!
In this episode interview a great couple from Iowa who have the best part time gig EVER!!! They judge BBQ's contests all around the mid-west! Penny and Rick didn't just fall into this great job, oh no...they had to attend BBQ school to be an official judge. Needless-to-say they take this part time retirement job SERIOUSLY!
To be an official BBQ judge they attended the Kansas City BBQ judging school to learn all the tricks of the trade! https://www.kcbs.us/ They have judged many contests and have some great stories for us to explore! These two retiree's (yes, Rick has some part time employment too) have a great story to share! They have ballooned in Africa and traveled through Italy just to name a few of their adventures...but becoming BBQ judges....put them in a whole different league!

Our first cruise in retirement we went to Alaska! What a great way to treat ourselves! The ship was beautiful, food was great, our friends were awesome, and Alaska was amazing!
Hiking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon was a bucket list item for Curt. We joined friends, Craig and Susie, and planned an amazing trip that included a stop at Arches National Park, Antelope Canyon, and Zion National Park which is home to Angel's Landing. Hiking from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon to the Colorado river and back up the next day was a grueling test of our hiking abilities that we both passed and would do again!
Welcome to Iceland! This beautiful country is one to explore for sure! We spent ten wonderful days camping our way around the Golden Circle and the Ring Road. Iceland is home to over 800,000 sheep and only 323,00 people! We enjoyed hitting as many hot springs as we could as we traversed this wild country all while devouring as many bowls of delicious fish soup! We hope our podcast will set the fire in you to journey to the land of the North! Remember, "don't sit too soon"!
In this episode we talk to Jaime and Martha DeLeon who in semi-retirement moved from a 2500 sq. ft. home to a 33 foot long trailer Wow!!!!! Can you imagine??? They said they purged a lot of "stuff" and we are so proud of them for simplifying their lives so much. I think we can all learn a thing or two from the DeLeons!
Iceland is pure beauty. Whether you love the ocean, the hot springs, the history, or the mountains, there is something for everyone. We loved our ten days traveling the Ring Road and Golden Circle. If you are lucky enough to travel there you will not be disappointed.
This is our first and introductory podcast! We are Curt and Cindy Liljedahl, and we are so glad you found us! Here is a little background about us, your hosts! We have been married 34 years and have 60 years of teaching in the classroom between us. Curt is a retired physics teacher, diving coach, and aquatics director and Cindy is a retired elementary reading specialist! We were both born and raised on farms in Iowa and met at Iowa State University (Go Cyclones). We moved to south Texas for our careers where we lived on the Rio Grande Border for over 30 years. Retirement came with a dream to move back to our roots and find a piece of lake life. We both love to travel and experience new people and cultures so a podcast sounded like a great way to share our retired life. We hope to share our adventures as well as the adventures of other retired people we have encountered on our journey. We are always looking for new adventures so please share your retirement experience with us at AdventuRetired @gmail.com. Please subscribe to our podcast where we will drop a new show every few weeks! Until then, "don't sit too soon"!
