Description: "It is said that our true character is revealed by how we treat people who have nothing to offer us. King David was the most powerful man in the land, and all his enemies had been removed by God. His staunchest enemy, Saul, was dead after spending more than a decade ruining David’s life. David had promised Saul’s son, Jonathan, to treat Jonathan’s family with kindness after David took the throne. But Jonathan had died. Most kings would typically wipe out all the male descendants of the previous king, but David had a different spirit. In this impacting message, we see from David what it means to use all our strength, authority and privilege to benefit others - especially those who have absolutely nothing to offer us in return. David may have been entitled to revenge, but he chose mercy instead. From this choice, we find one of the most beautiful examples of active grace anywhere in the Bible."

Description: "The Apostle Paul once wrote that “All the promises of god are Yes & Amen in Jesus.” (2 Cor. 1:20). Yet it is undeniable that sometimes God seems to look us straight in the eye and tell us, “No, my child.” The challenge for us is discerning what the difference is between our desires and God’s promises. This message from King David’s life walks us through what it is like to receive a flat denial from God. David asked for something that made sense. It was spiritual. He wanted to honor the Lord by doing something for Him…and God told David NO. Can we embrace God’s No’s in faith? Will we praise him when He denies us? Have we matured to celebrate His wisdom when He declines the thing we desire? David’s life helps us to see how God saying No is sometimes the gateway to greatness and glory.”

Description: One of the most challenging aspects surrounding the reality of suffering is determining the source of our suffering. Different Christian viewpoints will give drastically different answers. Did a sovereign God cause me to suffer? Is the devil afflicting me with intentional warfare? Am I being punished for my sins? Or is suffering just built in to the human experience, therefore I am to accept it? All of us have wondered about these issues at times. Paul the Apostle suffered like few others in the Bible. This message reveals an intense season in Paul’s life where He asked God to remove his suffering and God told Paul, “No.” From Paul’s response to his season of suffering, you and I are able to learn some incredibly helpful insights about how God allows suffering to work some of His most precious offers into our lives as His children. The devil may be the source of our suffering, but he never has to have the last word about the final outcome.

Description: The modern American Church has almost zero theology for suffering. It’s like the uninvited visitor who shows up and takes over for a little while, leaves abruptly, and never announces when he is coming back again. We are unable to deny the reality of suffering, and we cannot pretend that Christians are immune from it. Yet, it certainly is not the will of God that His children remain so awkward when thinking upon suffering and discussing it within the context of the Kingdom. The words of the Apostle Paul serve as a beautiful template for all of us who are experiencing suffering or know someone else who is currently enduring painful difficulty. What good comes from suffering? Why would a loving God allow it in the lives of His people? What do I do with my fears, weaknesses and doubts that arise when the suffering finds me and does not leave? These are not questions without biblical answers. We just need to learn to trust what God says and then welcome Him to bring stunning grace to help us. That is exactly what Paul learned to do.

Description: All of us are going to be entrusted with seasons of pain. Trouble is simply the unavoidable reality of passing through our time on planet earth. When the Christian is entrusted with a season of struggle, the intent of God is to bring us closer to Himself. Wisdom, revelation and intimacy are to be birthed from any and all pains that find us in life. Yet, pain seems to have its own agenda. Pain wants to be the predominant voice, speaking more loudly to us than God. This message from the Book of Job highlights how pain seeks to lie to us when it enters into our lives. Knowing ahead of time the potential deceptions that attach themselves to our suffering and trouble can equip us not to believe the lies and to remain resolved to magnify the promises of God to us when we follow Jesus into the deep and dark valleys.

Description: The Book of Job offers the reader a strange, unique glimpse into the interactions between God and Satan. When Satan discusses the godly man, Job, with God, he receives permission to test him. Satan aims to destroy Job. God intends to strengthen Job through whatever attack Satan launches against him. Job suffers a lifetime of woe in the matter of one singular hour. This message takes us on the emotional and spiritual roller coaster ride that occurs when godly people encounter their worst nightmares occurring in real time right before their eyes. From Job, we learn the freedom of acknowledging all the pain and loss with raw emotion, while at the same time holding onto our confidence that God is good and that He is for us. In the end, we behold a man showing us all how to worship in the ruins.

Description: There is a scene in ancient Israel from which all modern followers of Jesus can powerfully learn. Four dying lepers stumbled upon a miracle from God in the middle of the wilderness. The initial response of these four lepers sadly characterizes so much of modern Christendom. Happily, just a short time later, the reality of the treasure entrusted to them hit their hearts, and then became something to release into the lives of others. As all Christians have received immeasurable treasure in their salvation, our response to this grace from God is to become people of generous release into the lives of others. We who have trusted Jesus will follow the Spirit into releasing our lives to enrich others rather than hoard all we have received for ourselves. This message highlights the power of God to initiate powerful reversals of our hopeless circumstances. It also serves to summon those of us who have been rescued by Him to live in such a way that others can drink from the streams of love, care and generosity which will flow from our rescued lives.

Apart from the revelation of Scripture, we cannot authentically know Him. Description: "You have likely never met a person that can honestly say that they delight in waiting. While it is true that, as we mature, we learn to patiently wait, nobody truly enjoys waiting for something they desire. We have an impulse in our soul that prefers to immediately receive what we long for. Part of becoming a deep follower of Jesus is learning how to cooperate with His practice of making us wait. King David’s life was marked by long, deep and sometimes painful years of waiting on God to bring to pass His plan for David’s life. In this message, we witness David’s breakthrough that was two decades in the making. That’s right: David waited twenty years for one day. Yet, when that particular day finally found David, he was so glad to reap the harvest of all those years of patiently waiting upon the Lord. We should expect the same in our own lives. Are you and I willing to wait as long as God determines for Him to bring to pass His plans for us?"

Description: "Very few people in the Bible captivate us as powerfully as David. His story is one of an underdog who became an overcomer. His stunning heart for God is not so spiritual that we are kept ignorant of his raw passions and public failures. In the end, David's story offers us much about what it means to be a man of faith. Our culture is confused about the issue of masculinity. The Church does not seem to always offer clarity about being male and living as a son of God. This season in David's life offers us a platform for growth in seeing both masculine strength and humility as part of what it means to be a man who follows Jesus. May God impact our hearts and minds to reframe what we believe masculinity truly is. It is not toxic to be fully, unashamedly male. It is nothing to apologize for. What every man needs is a touch from God that imparts him the identity which God has reserved for him."

The Church is the visible reflection of the heart of the Lord. As we walk in oneness with Him, He will live out His life through us as individuals. When we live in harmony with each other as believers, there is an even greater level of the revelation of the nature and purpose of God through us. This message helps us to discern what a healthy spiritual family can look like. Our spiritual DNA is inseparable from the nature of God. As we live in humble trust, the world around us will be able to see who God is and what He is like.

When we make decisions that do not honor the Lord, there will be consequences. Sometimes those consequences are intense. How do we respond when our sins catch up with us? Do we run further from God, or do we have enough assurance of His committed love to turn to Him in our moment of deep need? David was about to temporarily lose everything he treasured. Even his own life was hanging in the balance. How he responds to the dire situation he had created can instruct us in how to turn to God when we have failed. David’s bad decisions had created an impossible knot for himself, his men and all of their families. God was going to prove that He knows how to untie impossible knots."

Description: "The differences between men and women are far more than any of us are able to number. God made males and females to be distinct from one another. This important determination from God is seen in human anatomy, personality and the different ways that men and women tend to lean in our natural instincts. Fewer places in the Bible put on a clearer display of the differences between men and women than the part of David’s life where he meets the woman who would become his future wife. Sadly, for David, he is presented with all of his flaws in this portion of his story. Abigail, on the other hand, is revealed to us as a powerful woman, fell of grace and wisdom. David and Abigail are not alone in this account. The largest, darkest and coldest shadow is cast upon them both by a man named Nabal, Abigail’s first husband. Take note of how these two men at their worst are contrasted by the Holy Spirit with this woman who is at her best. May we all, male and female, learn from both the excellent and powerful examples from all three of these lives.”

Description: "For four centuries, Israel had been captives in Egypt. There was an intentional, cultural and spiritual bondage which had robbed them of their identity as the descendants of Abraham. Description: One of the most challenging things that Christians deal with is how to respond to the attacks of those who choose to treat us as their enemies. If we do not fight back at all, we become doormats. If we fight back in the wrong manner, we forfeit the covering of God and may end up making a difficult situation much worse. Jesus commands us to turn the other cheek, but does that mean we passively tolerate mistreatment, abuse or lies? What exactly does it mean to leave all vengeance to the Lord? In this season from David’s life on the run, we are impacted by several important Kingdom principles that all appear in one tense scene. David has an opportunity to wipe out an enemy who is clearly wicked. It seems like God is giving Saul into David’s hands to defeat. People encourage David to aggressively put an end to the fight, but David’s heart is not so sure it is the right thing to do. From David’s actions, we find ourselves instructed on how to submit to human authorities, how to show honor to those who may not deserve it, and how to rest in trusting God with His perfect timing to bring a holy end to our battles with others. In the end, we learn how to send our enemy back home.

We must continually press in or it is certain that we will be drawn back into something other than the lordship of Jesus Christ. Description: "If you live long enough and keep your eyes open, you will be able to discern repeated patterns within the Kingdom of God. This part of David’s story also serves as an opportunity for us to see if there is any danger of us living in the prison of our own insecurities when God promotes others around us. Envy and jealousy are open doors to the demonic realm, and we have the calling to keep our own hearts free and clear of these powerful emotions. Description: There are unforeseen moments in life that will define our entire storyline. Many times, we did not see them coming when we awoke on the day that they occurred. God’s providence sets up encounters, events and opportunities that will mark us forever. How we respond to those moments is crucial. Description: Smith Wigglesworth prophesied in 1947 that the greatest revival would occur in the midst of that generation who intentionally married the Spirit of God and the Word of God in both identity, theology and ministry. We are living in the midst of such a generation of Christians and churches. Those who have historically cherished the written word of God, the Bible, are being awakened to the need and offer of the power of the Holy Spirit that has always been available but was historically ignored by them. Denominations who once shunned the supernatural work of God the Spirit are now being gloriously entrusted with His presence and power. For those Christians and denominations who have historically been given to the signs, wonders and gifts of the Holy Spirit, there must be an accompanying return to the prioritizing of the written Word. Man does not live by signs and wonders alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God. This message takes a penetrating look at what God’s written word contains, how it is described and what it accomplishes. Those who pursue the Spirit independently of the Word will eventually fall into error. The bible itself tells us of the immense value of God’s Word. Description: Jesus was never fooled by the crowds. One day they loved Him, the next day they cried out for His death. Instead of living for the welcome of the masses, Jesus lived every hour of His life seeking to do the things which brought pleasure to the Father. So clear was Jesus about the Father’s assignment for His life that He never once stepped off that pathway. Along the way there were powerful healings, miracles, resurrections, conversions and teachings. The people loved it when Jesus moved in the power of the Father! Yet, Jesus knew that people are fickle, and He was never drawn away after their halfhearted devotion. He often spoke aloud of the wonder of knowing just who would follow Him all the way to the cross. In this message, Jesus leaves us with one of the key principles for living a life that counts for eternity. When the Christian recognizes this principle is his or hers to live out, then spiritual fog evaporates and powerful clarity comes to us. Apart from our receiving this principle as foundational in our lives, we cannot experience the fulness of what is offered to us through the Son of God.

Description: "All good parents want to see their children grow, succeed and prosper. The best parents are intentional about ensuring that their children have the opportunity to go farther than they themselves could have ever gone. What is true in natural parenthood is also true with spiritual mothers and fathers: we want the best for our sons & daughters in the faith. When God allows us the joy and privilege of pouring into those coming behind us, we want to be proactive in our investments in their own walks with Christ. Paul’s prayer in Colossians 1:9-14 reveals what he prioritized as a spiritual father in the lives of those coming behind him. He wants these Jesus-followers to be marked forever by the King. From Paul’s prayers over them, we find ourselves stirred in spiritual hunger for these marks to be bolder upon our own lives and appearing on the lives of those in whom we have the opportunity to invest. What does a life marked for eternity look like? Are our own lives displaying these marks? Are we intentionally living in a way that those coming behind us are also marked with the powerful traits of a disciple of Christ? Jesus gave so much so that our lives would be marked for eternity. This message calls us to give ourselves more fully to this desire of the King.”

Description: Never forget that God has a plan. We also need to remember that He is constantly working to bring that plan to fulfillment. God was done with Saul as the King of Israel, and He had already chosen Saul's replacement. David was presently anointed and awaiting his future elevation to the throne of Israel. Before that occurred, there was a process that God had initiated that must first be completed. David's slaying of Goliath was a huge piece of that process. What does it look like when the winds of God's providence begin to blow? When it is time for things to move within God's wise plans, His people need to exercise sharp discernment to recognize what He is accomplishing. In a very discouraging situation, God would providentially move to bring about one of the most glorious events in the young life of the boy who would become a king. David would be slaying a giant. Looking back now, we can clearly recognize the winds of change which were being unleashed in Israel by God.

Description: No other generation that has ever lived has needed to understand what is written in Scripture about the calling to discern the times in which they live. Jesus spoke about this need in some very pointed words in Matthew 16. He later listed a whole host of signs that manifest at the end of the age in Matthew 24. John taught us to test & discern the various spirits that operate around us in each generation (1st John 4). Peter mentions in his second letter that God has given us the ability to perceive the nature of the times in which we are living. And then there is Paul. In this message we will see that Paul prophetically reveals the anthropology at the end of the age - he tells us what people will be like. As we study his description of the people living just prior to the Second Coming of Christ, we should all be sobered. It is undebatable from his writings that we are currently very close to the return of Jesus. Our present generation is exiting off the end-times on-ramp. Knowing we are close, what do we do?

Description: Many people wonder, "Just how do I walk in my God-appointed destiny?" The answer for each of us is that we walk in destiny one faithful step at a time. David has been anointed as the future King of Israel by Samuel. David is a teenager whose current job is protecting sheep from predators. Positionally, he is the low man on the totem pole in his family. Yet, when it comes to David's destiny, there is nobody positioned higher in all of Israel. How would David ever make it from the lowly shepherd's field to the throne of Israel? This message reveals how our impossibilities are God's opportunities. God called David to be a king, and He would see to it that David eventually arrived at the appointed place. From this season in David's life, we learn the immeasurable value of treating small opportunities as if they were the most important. Description: Few people in the Bible are as compelling as King David. We are drawn to him from the very first mention of David as the little brother whom nobody thought much of. His anointing as the future king of Israel by Samuel bursts open a biography that is filled with elements of faith, love, poetry, warfare, betrayal, sin and lavish grace from God. It is impossible to know the story of David the King of Israel without learning much about our own lives. David’s story consistently intersects with the very things that mark our own lives as we endeavor to follow God in a generation that is embattled by many of the same forces that opposed David and his reign. In the end, David’s life instructs and empowers us as overcomes who contend for the breakthrough offered to us by God. This unlikely hero was singled out as a teenager by God and, from that day forward, David lived a life of passion and purpose. God is raising up many in our generation to follow in David’s footsteps, model his heart for God and learn from his regrettable mistakes.

Many books have been written that instruct the preacher how to "draw the net" so that the listener knows what to do with what they have heard. Each one of us has the call to examine our own heart and to discern how our lives are presently aligned with what Jesus has said throughout this sermon. His final words serve as both an invitation and a warning to us. It is no small matter what we decide. Jesus is telling us that how we respond is a matter of eternal life or eternal death. He brings the entire sermon to a pointed end when He calls us to examine the foundation upon which we are presently building our lives.

Description: "Nearly 2500 years ago a man named Zerubbabel believed in freedom. He left an easier life in the Persian Empire and traveled to a desolate city - the city of his fathers - to build a temple for Jehovah in Jerusalem. He left with great zeal and visions of the splendor of a restored glory to the city of God and its people. Yet when the difficult task of rebuilding the temple began, Zerubbabel encountered a mountain of obstacles. In chapter 4 of Zechariah God sends a word through His prophet to encourage Zerubbabel to put his hands to this great work and continue to spend himself for something greater than himself. The mountain of difficulty was immense indeed, but the grace of God was waiting to do something that had eluded Israel for nearly 100 years. It was time for God to work and he needed his man to embrace the challenge. In the face of immovable mountains, God has never flinched. Not for Zerubbabel in his day, and not for you today."

Description: "There is one thing that no human being gets to negotiate in this life: we will all be assigned some struggles. Description: "Does God hold entire people groups accountable for sin? Is there any biblical foundation for something like national repentance? Are Christians so individually viewed by God that there is no connection between the sins of our ancestors and us living today? These questions are all in play as we approach a portion of the story from that Old Testament great, Daniel. As Israel had been suffering for their sins for nearly seven full decades, Daniel, a devout and faithful servant of God, did something peculiar. He confessed the sins of his ancestors as if they were his own, and he repented on behalf of generations who went before him. From Daniel’s example we need to consider if our own families, churches, cities or nation might be missing God’s very best for the present hour, simply because nobody has ever owned the sins of our forefathers. Daniel’s honesty, humility and thirst for righteousness compelled him to leave no sinful stone unturned as he went before his God with an unusual, unpopular confession."

Description: If you will think all the way unto that moment when every human will have stood before God after life on earth has ended for us all, you will see that all questions will then be completely answered. All debates will be ended. All differences will have been reconciled. Every human opinion will have been reduced to dust in the presence of final and undeniable truth. Yes, there is coming a reality for all of us where the scales will be perfectly balanced, and every score settled. In the end, God brings us all into an unassailable honesty and every human will find themselves in God’s presence, acknowledging that He was right all along. The Sixth Psalm reveals the real-time process of what it can look like for us to get honest with God. As the psalmist finds himself way in over his head, he begins to get gut-level honest with his Maker. The Church in America needs a dose of this same kind of honesty with the Lord. Where are we these days? Have we erred? Is the Father waiting for us to quit refusing to own up to some things? What will happen if the Church that is crying out for revival would first become honest in repentance? Maybe some of these answers can be uncovered in this ancient Psalm. Maybe we can step into the breakthrough into which the psalmist himself stepped.

That judge is not me, nor is it you. We are set free through the words of Jesus to exit the lifestyle of evaluating, indicting, critiquing others. We are invited to love them in Spirit and in Truth."

Description: "When the clock runs down and we find ourselves in the last days of our lives, we will be crossing the finish line that will have been defined by all of the countless choices we made during our lives. We ultimately arrive at the point of death in the place where we consistently aimed during our days of life. Taking nothing away from the sovereignty of God, the bottom-line truth about our lives is that we reap what we sow. Life is defined by our choices - what we did with what we were offered by God. In this portion of Jesus’ message on the hillside, He exposes one of the most familiar choices that all of us are faced with daily. Will we live our lives for the material world or the invisible world? Will we aim the trajectory of our lives for temporary treasures or eternal ones? We must answer this question while we are still living because the ultimate truth is that our own finish line does not actually occur when we die. We have an appointment after death with Jesus who will assess the full value of our lives and then dispense eternal rewards for us based on how we trusted and followed Him. It is in that place that we discover if we actually truly lived. In the end, we pick our own pathways.”

Description: The most famous teaching on prayer found in the Bible was actually part of Jesus' Sermon on the Mount. Though Matthew does not disclose this detail, Luke 11:1 lets us know that Jesus released this teaching on prayer in response to some disciples' request to be taught how to prayer. Often called The Lord's Prayer, this simple teaching from the King helps us to grasp the heart of how Jesus desires for us to communicate in prayer with God. While there is not necessarily anything wrong with memorizing and repeating this prayer, Jesus was not teaching us to only pray these words. This prayer offers us a healthy heart-posture for our own prayers, which enables all the words we pray to God to become fruitful, honorable and powerful. Let's learn how to pray all over again by taking an in-depth look at Jesus recommended approach to dialogue with the Father.

Description: Divorce and remarriage are issues that the Church has offered various views upon over the centuries. While nearly half of all first-time marriages end in a divorce, it is not enough to simply acknowledge that there is a painful problem. One day, some religious leaders wanted to debate with Jesus over this issue. His response to their questions about divorce, alongside of what the Apostle Paul wrote in one of his letters, help us to understand much of the heart of God on the matter. There are two ditches that Christians must avoid when considering the issue of divorce and remarriage: indulgent coddling and loveless condemnation. We need to know what God thinks and exalt that as our own adopted view.

Description: "As Jesus goes deeper into His message on the hillside, He begins to move His hearers beyond the popularly accepted religious teachings of their day. Opening with a shocking statement about the eternal destination of the Jewish leaders and teachers, Jesus intentionally shifts focus from our outward moral behaviors to the inward condition of our hearts. While all of those listening would agree that murder is a sin, Jesus calls them to address the deeper issue of unresolved anger in their hearts. In doing so, He begins a portion of the Sermon on the Mount that forces all of us to diagnose the status of our own hearts before His exalted Kingdom expectations for us. Actions are easier to manage than attitudes. The King wants all of His followers to know that He did not come to enforce a new moral behavioral list of regulations. He came to completely transform our hearts."

Between these two demands, eternity hangs in the balance for us.

The story of Jacob is one of lost identity, false identity and then restored identity. God will go to great lengths to bring us into the understanding of who He says we are. This is attached to our destiny and purpose in life. If we live by the descriptions assigned to us by people, we will live beneath the full identity that God has prepared for us from before the foundation of the world. We have strength that no other people possess because it is imparted from God Himself. Yet, with that strength, we operate in love and gentleness. We are not threatening, intimidating or operating in fleshly dominance. The last four beatitudes reveal what it means for Jesus-followers to live as gentle giants.

Description: As Jesus begins to release His sermon on the mount, He imparts to His hearers what are commonly referred to as the beatitudes. These are the core values of His heart and, therefore, Jesus’ Kingdom. While our tendency is to look at these beatitudes as rules to follow, that is not the intention of Jesus. He is simply stating these things as the things He values and what He imparts to His followers. With each beatitude, there is an attached reward. These first four of the eight core values that Jesus teaches deal with the inner condition of our hearts. Clearly, as we hear Him impart what He values to us, we are quick to discern that Jesus is completely different than the world around us and its values. He invites us to join Him in this life of distinction.

Description: "It might sound somewhat simplistic to some, but it really is true that each Christian's life can be summed up with the headline of, "I am a Jesus-follower." As we enter into relationship with Jesus Christ by faith, Heaven's expectation is that we live all our days following Him in trusting obedience. As we all commit to keep our eyes on Jesus, many potential distractions come along that can result in us getting off track. One of the most common and lethal distractions to those who are to follow Jesus is our tendency to fixate upon what is happening with other people. The life of a Jesus-follower requires intense focus on the Lord as He leads us. When we become distracted by how He is leading others, or the degree to which we believe they are faithfully following Him, we become sidetracked as we take our eyes off of Him. No clearer example of this danger is found in Scripture than that of the Apostle Peter. From this pivotal moment in his life, we see how easy it is to get distracted from following Jesus, and how intense Jesus is in His command for us to keep our eyes on Him."

Description: When we think of dramatic conversions, our minds almost always latch on to those people whose testimonies include deliverance from some form of a moral abyss. The man who was a woman-chaser. The woman who loved to be chased and captured by him. The drug abuser. The drunk. The person who was delivered from depression and demons. These are the conversions we consider amazing. But what about the self-righteous religious person? What of the moralist, the rule keeper, the bible scholar, or the church attendee who never missed a service? We usually give a token theological nod to the acknowledgment that these people need Jesus too. Yet their conversions may be all the more dramatic because it is often hard to convince these types of people of their great need for Christ. The Apostle Paul had one of the most dramatic conversions in all of the Bible. Yet, his testimony was that he was saved…from his religion. This passage from Philippians will help all of us to understand that trusting in Jesus as Lord includes a renunciation of placing confidence in anything within us. It is Jesus or nothing. Yes, immorality and sinful indulgences will be taken from those who are truly converted. So will religious pride, trusting in disciplines and believing that you can achieve a high enough score with God that will gain you His favor.

Description: "A remix is a newer version of something previously released which has been altered from its original state by adding, removing, and/or slightly altering pieces of the item. The primary characteristic of a remix is that it appropriates the core of something done previously, and changes certain elements to create something similar, but also discernably new. Psalm 126 is an ancient cry for a spiritual remix to be released from Heaven. As the Psalmist thinks upon Israel’s history with God, he remembers a time when God restored them with some unspecified touch from Heaven, but he is not longing for the past. The Psalmist is asking the Lord to do something similar in the present. He hungers for the core of revival to be released, but with something fresh on it for a time such as this. Let your own prayer be for that very same thing among your people and in your present generation."

Description: We all long for an unbroken, never-interrupted season of tranquility. We can find ourselves searching for days of comfort, and then working diligently to the best of our understanding to facilitate those seasons of ease. Eventually, we come to the conclusion that the Scriptures were pinpoint accurate when they declare in Job 14:1, “Man who is born of a woman is few of days and full of trouble.” What is awesome in God’s Kingdom is that we experience the very best of God in the same seasons wherein we are experiencing the worst in life. God’s character, promises and power provide the invitation for all believers to take their rest in Him. When and if we seek our rest in something else, He will resist that very thing, even if He must destroy it. When a believer’s days are full of trouble, his soul can be made strong by the relentless grace of God.

Description: A healthy church will eventually become a sending church. The heart of the father is not for churches to continue to balloon in numerical growth without sending forth some in the flock to help other assemblies of believers who need their assistance. Church revitalization and church planting are clear components of New Testament mission. When the time comes to send forth people to new works, whom do we send? From Paul’s letter to the Philippians, we learn that he believed in releasing his top-tier co-laborers to go and begin new works. What he says about Timothy and Epaphroditus will help modern believers understand some of what makes us valuable to the mission of Jesus in our generation. Not everyone can be an Apostle Paul, but none of us is prohibited from being like the two men that he mentions in this passage. Character, commitment and love are revealed as powerful traits for profitable servants of God. These are the types of people our churches need to send forth.

Description: Most of the time when we sing about God’s grace, think about God’s grace or speak to others about God’s grace, we primarily focus on the comforting aspect of it all. Grace feels cushiony to us - a soft pillow in a hard life. Yet, grace also brings about something that is anything but comfortable. Grace hits its fullest level when we are completely tapped out of our own resources. When God wants us to experience a deepening confidence that His grace alone is sufficient, He leads us to places where we cannot lean on anything, and I mean anything, within ourselves. We give up control, we wrestle with doubts, we become impatient, we struggle to continue. This is the low place in life where grace flows down. Through one chapter in the life of Abraham, here called Abram, we encounter what it means to have to remain in the uncomfortable grip of grace. The process is demanding, but the results are breathtaking.

Description: Scripture reveals no fewer than 150 different references and titles for Jesus. All of these were placed purposefully in the Bible to help convey the immeasurable identity of God the Son. Most of us were introduced to Him as being the Savior of Sinners. We were taught that we must personally accept Him into our hearts so that our sins will be forgiven and Heaven can become our etenral destination. While it is true that forgiven sinners will arrive in paradise after they die, many of us may be surprised that Jesus is only referred to as Savior 15 times, while He is called Lord over 600 times. The issue of the lordship of Jesus Christ is crucial for all of us. Scripture overwhelmingly presents Jesus as the LORD who saves, not a Savior who offers a bonus-level of discipleship to those who want to know Him as Lord of all. This message takes us through multiple passages which reinforce that Jesus Christ came as Lord of all, calls us to bow to Him as Lord of all, frames the Gospel message with Him being Lord of all and will be acknowledged for all eternity as Lord of all. The Church must get this vital doctrine right.

Description: "There is something so crucial in the Christian life that we cannot afford to ignore it, minimize it or deny it. The issue of God’s call for us to forgive those who have wronged us is a Kingdom non-negotiable. The glories attached to the lives of those who live in a posture of non-offense and proactive forgiveness are immeasurable. The other side of the equation presents a life of unforgiveness, bitterness and offense which is accompanied by various levels of inner disturbance or even torment. No teaching of Jesus presents these two potentials more clearly than his parable in Matthew 18. If we are to live the abundant life that Jesus has purchased for us, the gate to enter it includes an ongoing commitment to forgive everyone for everything. To refuse to do so connects us with one of the most cryptic promises Jesus ever released during his earthly ministry. A life of forgiving others promises joy, love, freedom and power. For the one who chooses not to forgive others, there is only the expectation of emptiness, frustration and deep spiritual conflict. This message calls us all to release those who have wronged us.”

Description: In the last seventy-five years in America, it has become increasingly popular for those who proclaim Jesus as Savior to also proclaim a bold independence from the Church. While it is true to say that salvation is a matter between the individual and his or her God, it is not true to proclaim that following Jesus allows for the possibility of detachment from intentional partnership with other believers. As Paul continues his letter to the Philippian Christians, he takes a helpful approach to remind them that God has designed all believers to gather together, love one another deeply, serve one another, draw courage from each other and, yes, even suffer alongside one another. Salvation is a moment between one person and Jesus, but being a Christian is never done alone. We must follow together those who are following the King.

Description: You might be surprised to learn just how willing God is to release breakthrough and revival to individuals, churches and regions. Nobody desires authentic spiritual awakening to occur more than the One who is the central focus of all awakenings. God is not reluctant to pour out His goodness upon us. What, then, delays these outpourings and breakthroughs? It is most often an issue of our lack of alignment with the heart of God or our lack of confidence about what it is that He is offering us. Asa was an ancient king in Judah who was doing his best to realign the people with the ways of God. His efforts did not go unnoticed in Heaven. God observed Asa’s commitments and sent a prophetic word to him through Azariah, telling Asa to press in further and to expect great reward for his efforts to cooperate with God’s offer for a spiritual reset. Based on what we see in this passage of scripture, can we be confident that God is offering us a reset in our own generation?

Description: An accurate study of the New Testament leaves us with the conclusion that dedicated followers of Jesus will endure many hardships. The world and the devil intentionally oppose the faithful Christian. In many parts of the world, violent persecution is the unavoidable reality for those who are not ashamed of Jesus. As the Apostle Paul continues his little letter to the Philippians, he does not hide the reality of his suffering. With great encouragement, however, his words redirect our focus off of the temporary struggle and towards the glory for Jesus that results when we steward our struggles in faith. What good do we allow to come from our own hour of trial? These words from Paul equip us to follow in his footsteps as he learned to steer his struggles toward the throne of Jesus. When we do the same, there will be a beam of glory that causes many to gaze upon the goodness of Jesus.

Few places in scripture reveal the father-heart of the Apostle Paul more so than the verses in this passage in Philippians. Though Paul could operate in some of the most stunning power from the Holy Spirit, he also understood the importance of nurturing those whom he spiritually fathered. From his words in Philippians 1:3-11, we learn the deep value of intentionally encouraging others in the walks with God. Paul tells the Philippians that they brought him joy. He let them know that he was praying for them. He reinforced that their hope in Jesus must remain strong as they look for deep growth in the love of God toward each other. Before he finishes his empowering words here, Paul reminds them all that the return of Jesus must remain at the forefront of their thinking. The aroma Paul releases in this encouraging passage is the fragrance of the Kingdom. May we all breathe it in deeply.

Description: As we read the words of the Apostle Paul in his letter to the Christians in Philippi, it is difficult to picture him writing from a Roman prison. Paul, incarcerated for the crime of being an unapologetic missionary, is reaching out to the first church he established on the continent of Europe. From his opening words, we are able to sense flowing from the Apostle’s heart, the strong love, confident hope and earnest desire to minister to these believers. We can learn much about the relationship between leaders and followers from Paul’s opening words. Overshadowing Paul’s dark circumstances in prison are his powerful words meant to convey faith-building expectations over the entire group of believers in Philippi. Let us all be encouraged because Paul’s words to them have become God’s words to us today.

Description: As Kingdom citizens, Christians receive far more than we could ever give. There really is no adequate way to measure the riches of grace, the gift of eternal life, the constant supply of love, mercy and compassion which come to us from the Father. We humbly acknowledge that it would be impossible for any of us to pay back a fraction of what we have received from Him. Yet the Lord clearly calls us into a lifestyle of release and sacrifice. Our motivation for living generous lives is not in order to pay back or pay off what God has given us in grace. We are called as children of a generous Father to live lives that reveal our gratitude to Him by entering into His purposes in our generation. We are to reveal His nature to a blind world by living in time in the same ways that He has existed in eternity. God releases His love, His compassion, His mercy and His provision through the open hands of His children. The Father transforms us from being takers to being givers. Kingdom living does not happen in the realm of theory. There is a heavenly call for us to be poured out intentionally into the lives of others for the glory of our King. If it has not cost us, it isn’t real yet. This message reveals how Jesus will take obedience with that which may seem small to us and turn it into a Kingdom-revealing activity which meets practical needs and makes the love of the Father visible before our eyes and the eyes of those whom we bless.

Description: When the fullness of time came about on earth, God determined to set in motion His eternal plan to rescue the human race from the consequences of sin and the clutches of the devil. The Father would send His only Son to come and deliver all of those who would turn to Him. Before Jesus appeared, however, God graciously sent an alarm throughout Israel in the form of John the Baptizer, the forerunner to the Messiah. Jesus declared that John was the greatest prophet ever born. His ministry went up like a signal flare and then faded into the shadows with the same quickness that it began. What can we learn from the ministry of John? His life is not merely one of history. John was the human hinge upon which the door between the Old Covenant and New Covenant swung. Just as the Father sent the forerunner before the first coming of Jesus, we must expect to see this type of ministry repeated as the Second Coming of Jesus approaches. God is raising up forerunners in this generation with callings similar to what He assigned to John. What exactly should we be looking for as the time approaches?

Description: One of the challenges for us to live with a primary awareness of being citizens of God’s Kingdom is the troubling reminder that there is so much of the kingdom of this world bombarding our senses every single day. We can become more convinced of the evil, pain, division, injustice and vices of the temporary earthly realm than we are the righteousness, love, power and triumph of the coming Kingdom. Both realities exist in this present age. If God’s Kingdom is eternal and supreme, why do we sometimes discern less evidence of His kingdom than we do of the lesser kingdoms of the world, the flesh and the devil? When will God rid the cosmos of evil people and their evil deeds? Even in the visible Church there exists so much that seems incompatible with the Kingdom of God - when will dead religion, hypocrisy and counterfeit believers be dealt with? Jesus spoke to all of these things 2,000 years ago as He preached on the Mount of Olives. He tells us how and when all that does not belong in God’s paradise will be forever removed. Until then, we must learn to discern the difference between the wheat and the weeds in the Kingdom.

This message from the King contains the clearest demands of the Gospel upon those who are contemplating a commitment of their lives to King Jesus. He leaves no room for half-hearted followers. The Kingdom invitation clearly requires an all-or-nothing response from everyone who hears it.

The raw truth is that the enemy succeeds in this tactic of diversion in the lives of innumerable believers. We are able to learn how to consistently overcome Satan’s strategies by learning from Jesus himself as Satan sought to divert Jesus from the assignment He received from the Father.

Description: For many, when they first begin hearing intentional teaching about the Kingdom of God, there can arise an unsettling in their hearts. Because most Western Christians have been indoctrinated with a less-than-Kingdom version of Christianity, the concept of a literal Kingdom of God can seem foreign and awkward to them. Suddenly their Christianity is no longer centrally about obeying a list of rules, learning a set of truths, behaving morally as good Christian examples or attending worship services in a building once or twice a week. When the reality of the Kingdom is presented, there is a growing awareness that God has called us to a full and complete surrender of our entire selves unto His rule. We are being called to renounce all lesser kingdoms. Our loyalties are required to shift. Our values must be transformed. This is unsettling for many Western Christians who may even be concerned about whether they belong to Jesus at all after receiving understanding about what the bible says concerning the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom is so all-encompassing that, when one begins to initially grasp it, much of what they believed about Jesus and Christianity seems puny and paltry by comparison. They sense a need to bow lower, mover deeper and surrender more fully. At some point, they sense a need to receive greater clarity on the Kingdom. This message reveals the required posture of our hearts in order to both enter and continue in the Kingdom of God.

All encounters with God leave us changed on some level. Perhaps in our day of post-Enlightenment Christianity, the hardest thing to change about us is our minds. Whoever got to you first as a christian likely laid the foundation for much of what you believe and practice today. That is wonderful…if they taught you in Spirit and Truth. What is difficult is when you were not taught properly and God must later encounter you so that you can un-learn some things. Such was the case of Peter in Acts 10. The life of faith can be a roller-coaster ride. Elijah had experienced incredible, supernatural victory on the top of the mountain. What came after that was the darkest season that he had ever experienced. People turned against him. Physical exhaustion dominated his body. Fear was owning his thought-life. Elijah wanted to die so he could experience relief. When depression finds Elijah, God moves toward him in loving firmness. We cannot become prisoners to our most melancholy thoughts. This message reveals how God brings the discouraged and depressed out from their caves of fear and self-pity. What Elijah needed was an encounter that offered him a bounce-back.

Few things dent the human soul than the experience of rejection, abandonment and betrayal. Nearly every family you know has been impacted by one or more of these painful events. When these experiences occur during one’s childhood, it can be catastrophic and result in lifelong struggle for the one who experienced them. This message reveals the grace and faithfulness of God to a mom and teenage son who were rejected by their husband and father. While there is complexity in the reasons behind their rejection, the bottom line is that it bruised their souls. How does God minister to those who have been rejected and abandoned? Once a person has been brought to God through faith in Jesus Christ, it may be argued that the most vital experience to follow is to become convinced of the majesty, holiness and supremacy of God. While it is true that God is love, His holiness defines and regulates that love which comes from Him. He is not so holy that He remains distant from us, but He is not so loving that He endorses our indulgences. Isaiah had spent five chapters pronouncing woe upon others. When he sees the glory of God in the temple in chapter six, Isaiah pronounces woe upon himself. How he is ministered to in the throne room of God reveals much about the heart of God towards His people. This message calls all of us to consider the supremacy of God over all of creation, and brings us to an encounter which should cause us all to bow in submission and honor before His throne of grace.

It was never God’s intention to be a distant deity. He is not a remote religious figurehead. He’s not the cosmic scorekeeper. When one considers the entire revelation of Scripture, the clear conclusion is that God has always intended for us to relate to Him as our Father. Depending on the relationship that we might have had with our earthly fathers, this paradigm can be sweet and easy or interrupted and frightening. This message takes us to the very end of our Bibles and shows us that the goodness, generosity and tenderness of God the Father is the climactic revelation of His heart. Good, good Father is more than a song or a cliche - it is the bottomline truth of who God truly is.

One of the challenges for today’s Christian is the temptation to subconsciously trust in things other than God. Health, money, success, education and beauty regularly call us to take our identity in them. Yet the core of our faith is the invitation to fully trust our Father. Sometimes God is in our midst, working on our behalf, and we fail to properly discern Him. We must realize that God didn’t stop being creative after he put the final touches on the physical universe. When an angel brought to them a prophetic declaration about the coming birth of a son, hope began to return to their hearts. Eventually that hope would move from their hearts into all of Israel because the prophecy of Samson’s life was that he would set God’s people free from the oppressive Philistines. Description: The old phrase goes something like this, “Behind every good man there is good woman.” Well, in the case of Abigail this good woman was not behind any good man - she was out in front of two men who were not acting good at all. This little-known woman from the Old Testament is an amazing picture of the strengths of Kingdom womanhood. Abigail’s short story in Scripture is an inspired account revealing how many women have to live today. She had a sad marriage to a lousy husband. She had to be sharp minded and quick thinking in a crisis. She knew how to protect a man who was his own worst enemy, and how to honor a man who was worthy of it. Her wise words were like healing medicine to a deeply toxic situation. The end of this woman’s story is amazing, and 21st century Christians, both male and female, can learn from this woman of grace and grit.

Description: The man on a mission was on the mission until the end of the man. Josiah was ancient Israel’s version of the Energizer Bunny who never seemed to run out of ways to lead Israel into deeper faithfulness to God. In this closing chapter of Josiah’s life, we see him cement his testimony as the godliest king ever to sit on Israel’s throne. At the end of his life, Scripture records his testimony that sets him above all his predecessors. Yet, with all of Josiah’s glory, we see at the end of his life that he was still a mere human as one hasty decision brought him to the end of his life. Only one King is perfect, and his name isn’t Josiah.

Description: One of the marks of a great leader is that he or she understands the importance of celebration. For some leaders, it’s only about mission, hard work and accomplishment. They grind our success after success but rarely stop to enjoy what has taken place. When King Josiah finished his large-scale reformation work in Israel, he sought to honor what God had accomplished with a massive commemorative celebration. He planned the festival in a way that blessed everyone, both great and small. Description: Abortion is, perhaps, the most divisive topic that is frequently discussed in the United States. Well educated people will find themselves on the polar opposite side of the spectrum concerning their views on the topic of how they regard the lives of the unborn. In Josiah’s day, the people of Israel had adopted the pagan practices of sacrificing the lives of their babies and children. Why did they do this? How did their God respond? Valid faith will always result in action. We only truly believe those things upon which we act. If there is no fruit of works, there is no root of faith. Josiah had his heart pierced when we rediscovered the Word of God. Knowing what was right was not enough for the young King of Israel. He had to act upon the revelation of God. This message reveals the dramatic steps that Josiah initiated in order to honor the God that his forefathers had shunned. This is what reformation looks like.

In the end, for the Christian, it all boils down to us being motivated in life by love. It is God’s love for us that begins the process. Once we have experienced this, we are then empowered to allow that same love to work through us. When our relationships are fueled by selfless love for one another, the Father is pleased and the unbelieving world is able to recognize that we are truly followers of Jesus Christ. This message explores the dynamic activity of God’s love both to the Christian, and through the Christian. Everything hinges upon this.
When King Josiah heard for the first time what God’s word had to say, he was seized with fear. Why would such a strong reaction come from something as beautiful as the Bible? Well, for 57 years no leaders in Israel had been aligned with the scriptures, and Josiah had just heard the consequences for that kind of negligence. What you don’t know can not only hurt you, it could possibly kill you. This message continues the study in Josiah’s life and reveals both the curses for disobeying God’s Law and the blessings for obeying it. We all get to choose which side of the equation we get to experience. As for me and my house, we are going after the blessing.
Jesus Christ came, lived, died and rose to make all of us one. Clearly, the degree of our experiencing that oneness depends heavily on how we approach our relationships with one another as Christians. This message calls the believer to initiate humble, loving and sacrificial relationships with one another as we advance the Kingdom together. When believers embrace these teachings and commit to living them out, amazing things occur. When we fail to live these out, our power and effectiveness in the Kingdom is undermined. May we each declare, “This depends on me!”
The most dramatic event ever to occur on planet earth was the resurrection of Jesus Christ. After his death, Jesus’ disciples were despondent and scattered. When the news of His resurrection began to be circulated, nearly everyone who heard it was initially slow to believe. This message walks us through what it means to move from unbelief to reluctant belief to full belief.
The average American would be shocked if you told them that good people do not go to Heaven. Though you would be telling them the absolute biblical truth, they would have a hard time swallowing it. In this message, Jesus intersects a man who thought he was good enough on his own to inherit eternal life. Jesus inspected more deeply in the man’s heart, and placed His finger upon the one thing the man valued more than God. What would the man choose - His soul or the one thing that all his good works could not compensate for?
When seeking to understand the ways of Jesus, it is crucial that we visit the scene at the cross. His mercy and compassion to a condemned criminal is astounding. All around the cross there was hate, evil and violence. Upon the cross in the middle, there was love and forgiveness. This message reacquaints us with the freely offered heart of God’s Son.
Jesus mission to earth included His desire to pay the required price to atone for our sin. Any person who repents of their sin, turning to Jesus as Lord, will have that payment applied to their account, and their debt is forever removed. Clearly, those who experience this salvation will respond with a life of gratitude toward their Savior, right? This message reveals the ways of Jesus, specifically that He rightfully expects a life of intentional thankfulness, worship and praise. This message offers us all an opportunity to discern where our hearts are on the Thank-You-God-meter. Let’s pause and remember what great work He has accomplished on our behalf.
When we use the word “church” we are often referring to the place where a local group of believers gather as one in order to worship, pray and serve together. There is a lot of activity that goes on in a local church. It requires vision, volunteers, money and organization. Yet a church can have all of those things and more, but if it is lacking one specific component, that church will not last long for the glory of Jesus. Josiah found out what that one missing component was and, when he did, the young king of Israel made some immediate & sweeping changes.
Very few things in ancient politics could be as frightening as the reality of a third-grader reigning as the king over God’s people. Yet, in His sovereign plan, God exalted an eight year old named Josiah to Israel’s throne. It would prove to be one of the most amazing reigns that ancient Israel was ever privileged to experience. In this first message on the life of King Josiah, we will take a panoramic view of this amazing and godly legacy of the boy who became a king. May our hearts all be stirred to live for the same excellence that characterized young Josiah’s life.
Most of us stopped believing in the boogeyman before we started grade school. Yet, if we lived 2,000 years ago in a place called Gadara, we might have had opportunity to believe in the boogeyman well into our adulthood. In this message we will observe how Jesus intentionally encountered a man filled with demons who had been terrorizing an entire village. We can learn so much about the ways and works of the Savior as we witness Him display His authority over the domain of darkness. Stand amazed as Jesus transforms a man’s life and gives him a lasting purpose as the boogeyman becomes an evangelist.
If you walk with God long enough, you will discover that He will lead to an occasional valley. Seasons of dryness, distance, discouragement and despair can creep in like dark, looming clouds. This message takes a look at one believer’s experience in the valley, and how he helped himself exit it. We can learn to do the same when our valley season arrives.
Jesus is not only a Savior, Master & King, He is also a Shepherd. And Shepherds take their sheep where those sheep need to go. Sometimes the leadership of Jesus results in us being taken to places we never would have volunteered to go. He stretches us. He challenges us. He intentionally brings us to places where it is difficult to continue following Him. Jesus isn’t interested in leaving us where our natural gifting, education, strengths and experiences can sustain us. He wants to build deep friendship and trust with His own people. This is why He regularly stretches us beyond ourselves.
As the story of Jonah reaches its final chapter, we still have unanswered questions. Will God ever gain Jonah’s trust? Will Jonah change after seeing multitudes repent before God? Does Jonah ever experience the attitude adjustment he so greatly needs? In lavish grace for Jonah, God makes effort for Jonah to get his eyes off the Nineties whom he despises, and to take a long look in the mirror to examine his own heart. God frequently holds that same mirror in front of us so we will see what He sees in our hearts.
What if someone told you that the greatest singular revival that has ever occurred on earth came through the message of a prophet who did not want any results? Well, if someone told you that, you would be hearing the truth. Jonah’s second chance from God was met by Jonah’s obedience, but not his enthusiasm. Fortunately for the people of Nineveh, God had a desire to see them delivered, so He worked on their behalf in spite of His servant’s bad attitude. This message reveals the magnitude of God’s love for the lost, and the lengths He goes to in order to bring them into His family.
There is a certain test from God that requires humility and discernment for us to pass. The Kingdom is offered from God by grace and received by us through faith. But sometimes, God expects us to go all-in and pay full price. Ease, convenience and favor are sometimes the last things that God is offering us. When He wants our full buy-in, He requires of us the highest cost.
There is a certain type of season wherein a certain type of person experiences a “timeout” from God. For Jonah, running from God had led to disastrous consequences, but God was not content to allow Jonah to end his story in tragedy. Jonah was sequestered by God in the belly of a fish in order to gain understanding about the most important things in life. What Jonah eventually discovered is that God is merciful to rebels and is eager to offer all of us second chances.
Deborah isn’t the only female superstar in Judges chapter 4. This message introduces us to Jail, a woman who took initiative during a very short window of opportunity, and consequently made a name for herself in ancient Israel. Kingdom women have the awesome joy of being both nurturing and powerful. Jael showed wartime stealth and strength and sealed the victory for an entire nation.
You know it’s a bad day in the Kingdom when the one person who is supposed to represent God is actually trying to get away from Him. Jonah’s story continues as the rebellious prophet reaches a crossroads with the Lord. How does God deal with His children when they are digging in their heels against them? You might be surprised that there is great love in the midst of strong correction.
There is one aspect of the Christian life wherein none of us has a choice: we will be engaged by the enemy. The forces of darkness have one mission in the present age, and that mission is to seek to remove anything and everything that brings glory to Jesus Christ. Because of this, the Church exists under a permanent bullseye. How do you approach spiritual warfare? What is your response when attacked by the enemy or by circumstances created by the enemy? This message teaches us that we are to be on the offensive. We are invited to partner with God in victory. Once again, Deborah helps us learn how this is accomplished.
It has been said that a crisis does not make us nor break us, but reveal to us who we already are. If that saying is true, then the beginning of Deborah’s testimony reveals just how solid this woman truly was. With an intimidating army heading their way, Israel needed an in-the-moment leader. Deborah steps up and reveals to everyone what anointed leadership looks like.
Deborah was an extremely rare woman in her day. It might be accurately be said that Deborah would be a rare woman in any day. In this first message of the sermon series about Deborah’s life and ministry, we receive an overview of the diverse and dramatic ways that God used this woman in her generation. May all the daughters of God consider how they might emulate this valiant woman. May all the sons of God seek how they might help advance God’s daughters in their own unique Kingdom callings.
There are patterns in the Bible which reveal how God operates when He determines to get something done in His kingdom. He often chooses a person, reveals to that person what He wants to do, and then gives that person action items to accomplish. Success is all but guaranteed…as long as the person trusts and obeys God. Jonah was not that type of person. The beginning of his story takes us on a very wild ride.
Some have taken the beautiful doctrine of God’s sovereignty and have turned it into a celestial shrug. They wrongly believe that, since God is sovereign, He will do what He will, regardless of how His people choose to live. Instead of being motivated toward righteousness and honor by God’s sovereignty, they choose instead a fatalistic attitude, as if everything that will happen in their lives is predetermined by the master puppeteer in the heavens. This message reveals that God has chosen to PARTNER with His people, not control them. A huge amount of our living flows from, not God’s sovereignty but, instead, our own choices. Watch what happens when God’s people re-commit to Him. Watch how He responds to them. Watch how an incredible amount of blessing which had been withheld from them suddenly begins to be poured out…after they committed to move ahead with their God.
We do not know what it is like to be physically with Jesus. We have not touched Him. We have not spent three years with Him physically walking next to Him as we learn His ways. We have not heard His accent in our ears. The Apostle John had all of those experiences and so many more. John’s firsthand testimony of Jesus is something that opens us up to the treasure of just who this Savior really is. This message explores the wonder of God becoming man and the powerful impact that this event had upon the world. It’s much more than a Christmas-time sermon. It’s a lift-up-your-hands and revel in joy and wonder kind of message.
Somewhere along the line in America, the message of Jesus’ birth became more like a Hallmark card than the revelation of Scripture. We easily forget that the incarnation of God the Son was a wholly supernatural event. Joseph, the unsuspecting fiancée of Mary, encountered head-on much of the supernatural elements of Jesus’ birth. This message focuses on him, as he was entrusted with no fewer than three dreams/visitations from Heaven in order to preserve the plan that God began when He sent His Son to become the Savior of humankind. Dream with Joseph, and see what God births in your own life.
Spiritual warfare may be one of the most misunderstood and misinformed components of the Christian life. Some people pretend that Satan and his demons are a non-issue. Other people seem to think that there is a demon behind every shrub. The reality is that there is still a war being waged against the people of God by the forces of darkness. All believers are called to engage in this fight. Most are not equipped to soundly win it, however. Jesus has defeated Satan, for sure. Yet he is not yet extinct, therefore he fights. This message shows us how NOT to approach the battle.
There are few passages of Scripture that are so packed tightly together in order to drive home a point than the verses covered in this message. The point is this: Jesus is completely different than human religion. The Holy Spirit utilizes less than 25 consecutive verses in Matthew’s Gospel to remove all doubt from our minds that Jesus offers something far superior than the rules and regulations of human religion. We will see how Jesus is open while religion is closed. We will be convinced that religion focuses on the outward while Jesus goes after the inward. Finally, we will see the difference between Jesus freeing people and religion enslaving people. This is a message all Christians need to hear and understand.
Our curtain will fall one day. The Scripture is clear that each of us has an appointment with death. Amazingly, what we do with our lives here on earth determines our capacity to experience the fulness of living in the coming Kingdom. As we study the last chapter of Elisha’s life, we discover that he possessed such an anointing that, even when he was dead and buried, his power was still making a difference. This message calls on us to intensify our commitments in the Kingdom while we are still alive. We too can posses an anointing that actually outlives us here on earth.
It has been my observation that many, if not most, Christians do not seem to thoroughly enjoy their relationship with God. They have accepted Christ, they have a hope for Heaven when they die, they have modified some of their behaviors to fit the expectation of the Church…but they seem to have a disconnect from the very One whose heart is full of love and joy. The difference between this type of Christian and the one who is excited and enjoying their walk with God may be found in the gap between viewing yourself as a servant or as a son. This message from an ancient letter by the Apostle Paul calls us to move further into the awareness of who we are in Jesus. Knowing your identity in Christ shapes your enjoyment of Christ. In our Kingdom awareness, we may begin as servants, but we must arrive at sonship.
There is a mythological view of Christianity that goes something like this: you ask Jesus into your heart, He forgives all your sins, He makes your problems go away, He immunizes you from pain, sorrow and loss, He blesses you indiscriminately with all sorts of goodies, and then you go to Heaven when you die. Because so many people have their expectations aligned with this fairy-tale version of Christianity, they stumble when reality pounces upon them. Our faith requires long-distance, all-terrain, faith. This message takes us back to familiar person in the life of Elisha and shows, once again, how she models for us what it means to walk radically with God through challenges and into breakthrough.
The Lord loves to surprise us. Most of the time, the Father is eager to do more than anything we could ask or imagine. Sometimes, we just need our eyes open to all that He has in waiting for us. Resources, opportunities, spiritual gifts, open doors… He has everything we need to win our battles. This message reveals how there is often much more than meets the eye when we find ourselves seemingly outmatched. It is when we are in over our heads that we often experience the eye-opening power of God’s amazing goodness.
It seems that most Christians love to traffic in dogmatic beliefs. We are convinced that Jesus is God. We are convinced that Heaven and Hell are real. We are convinced that there is hope beyond the grave. We are convinced that God is good and Satan is bad. Our deep convictions are framed by what the Bible says. Yet, many Christians do not feel they can be dogmatic concerning the question of whether or not God wants to bless their finances. Suddenly the dogmatic beliefs come to a grinding halt when the topic of money is brought up. This message spotlights why all believers can be confident that God will bless their finances, and how they can position themselves for that forthcoming blessing.
Hearing from God is an immeasurable privilege. To walk in such intimacy with the Almighty that you can personally hear His voice - what an amazing occurrence! Yet we are accountable for what we hear, and He sometimes calls us to share it with others. In this message, Elisha is given three distinct words of knowledge. One is a joy to share. The other two? They would be difficult. Like Elisha, we must not only share the happy words, but also the heavy.
You know what they say about death and taxes: these are the only two certainties in life. While we may have no legitimate hope in escaping taxes, death is clearly able to be defeated. In many places throughout Scripture, God reminds us that the power of life in Him is greater than the power of death in us. Jesus emerged from the grave in victory, and so will all people who trust in Him. Before Jesus walked the earth, the power of God to beat death was still active. This message takes us into one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the bible. In the end, our tears are replaced with joy as we see what it is like when the dead are raised by the power of God.
In the New Testament there is this mention of a particular gift from the Holy Spirit called “a word of knowledge” (1 Cor. 12:8). While we are given very little by way of explaining this gift, we can see it in play throughout the scripture. A word of knowledge is the supernatural ability to clearly know something specific which cannot be known via natural means. Elisha’s life and ministry was marked by this gift – possibly more so than any other ability God gave him. This message shows in an extremely dramatic circumstance how helpful this gift is to believers. Amazingly, it is available today for Christians and we can be enriched by both offering words of knowledge and by receiving them from others.
A treasure in God’s Kingdom is to be ushered into the amazing cycle of blessing and being blessed. What does this mean? When we release, God ensures that we will receive. God declares it in the Old Testament. Jesus promises it in the Gospels. The Apostles teach it in their New Testament letters. Yet, many believers struggle to embrace the clear reality that God enriches them when they live a life of pouring into the Kingdom. There is a woman in Elisha’s life who made it her mission to bless God’s prophet. What she received on the back-end of the relationship was far more than she ever invested. As we release what God has entrusted to us back into the Kingdom, we should all expect some similar outcome in our own lives. The old adage is still true: we cannot out-give God.
When modern Christians hear the word miracle, we almost exclusively think of healings in the physical body. While physical healing is certainly a type of miracle which God works today, the term miracles is not limited to these types of things. In this message, we intersect with three miracles performed by the prophet Elisha which are centered in the transformation of the natures of three elements: water, plants and iron. It may not sound too inviting, but what surrounds these miracles, and what results from them, leave the listener with a volume of help for his or her own life. The bottom line is that we must increase in our confidence that some things that are impossible according to natural means can be transformed in a moment by the power of God.
What if King Jesus wrote an assessment letter to your home church? What would He say about the heart of the people? Would Jesus be encouraged, affirming and applauding over the work being accomplished by you and those you serve with? Are there obvious things which need to be corrected? For seven churches in Asia Minor, this is not a what-if scenario. Jesus spoke over who they were and what they were doing. This message unpacks what Jesus said to the church in Philadelphia. From His words we can learn much about what pleases the King, and we can be inspired to commit to the very things which made Jesus grateful for the Philadelphian believers. One day in the future, all of us will go through our own evaluation by Jesus. This passage of Scripture will equip us to be ready for that coming day.
All throughout the Bible, we witness God promoting people in the Kingdom. Whether it is David moving from shepherd-boy to king, or Esther moving from orphan to queen, God delights in exalting His faithful children. So what about us? Are there characteristics that those whom God promotes have in common? Are these characteristics currently in play in our lives? As we continue to look at the life of Elisha, his season of promotion reveals a handful of qualities that God seems pleased to honor in our lives. As we observe them active in his life, we are able to see if they are in our own.
In one sense, all Christians are ministers. We are all called by a King, into a Kingdom where we are assigned our own purpose to fulfill. Some believers are called to do this at an elevated expectation and commitment with their entire lives. These people walk away from every previous purpose and commit themselves wholly to serve God with all that they are and all that they have. They leave hometowns, they resign from their jobs, they often reduce their standard of living and embrace a life of shoe-leather faith. Elisha was an unknown commodity to his generation. Then, out of nowhere, God put his mark on this man, and called him to leave everything to become the next prophet in Israel. This message breaks down what a calling can look like and helps all of us, as children of God, to reacquaint ourselves with the non-negotiable fundamentals of living out our own callings in the Kingdom.
Zeal is an undervalued commodity in the Kingdom. Education is great. Experience is essential. Wisdom is a non-negotiable. Yet those three things could be found sitting in neutral if we do not possess Kingdom-zeal. When passion is added to precision, some wonderful things can happen. Having said that, zeal does not come without its own pitfalls. In this message, we see what happens when some of the disciples had more zeal than they had love. Their zeal also outran their call to unity. See how Jesus responds to His followers when they were very close to committing transgression, all because of their zeal outweighing their humility.
Relationships are precious in the Kingdom…and often fragile. The Apostle Paul was a man of God like no other. Many forget that he was initially an outcast in the church because of his past. A man named Barnabas put his neck on the line for Paul and they became friends and ministry partners. But then things went south in a moment of disagreement. This message takes us through Paul’s journey with Barnabas and helps us all learn how to admit it when we have made mistakes in our relationships with others. Broken fellowship with other believers is no small matter. Observe how Paul chose humility over pride.
People like songs about love, about victory, about heartbreak and about breakthrough. We write and sing of those things about which we are most passionate. Interestingly, there is a very short song in our bible that is all about the topic of…unity. Really? Unity? Yes, the Holy Spirit inspired a song to be written about the powerful blessing which God’s children experience when they do life together in unity. Most people do not know that there is an elevated blessing which only finds those who walk in unity with their spiritual brothers & sisters. Apart from this unity, this blessing on the rest of the Christian’s life will be smothered. If unity is important enough for God to write a song about it, then it must be good enough for us to sing about it. This message is not actually put to music, but it needs to become music to our ears as the Church advances together for the Gospel.
Few chapters in the bible have more greatly impacted Jeff Lyle than Romans 14 & 15. Unintentionally becoming a blind legalist after his conversion, Jeff credits the Holy Spirit’s revelation on Romans 14 as being the key that opened the cell to let Jeff be set free. This message takes the truths of liberty and love from Romans 14 and lays them over our relationships with others in the Church. Our relationships are greatly impacted by whether or not we hold people down or whether we set them free. Romans 14 not only sets you free from the unbiblical expectations of others, it empowers you to allow others go free when they disagree with your own standards, preferences and freedoms. No series on the topic of unity can be complete without a study on these verses.
It’s a little embarrassing to proclaim this, but it is a Kingdom command that Christians are to live with no divisions among us. We aren’t allowed to reject each other. We are not permitted to gossip about one another, or slander each other. The Gospel mandates that we go to each other and work out our differences. ALL of our differences. Yet the discouraging reality is that many Christians ignore this, and actually foster division in the Church with their words, actions, and inactions. This message makes it crystal clear that the Lord Jesus Christ is immeasurably serious concerning His decree that His followers be unified. It is time for heart-inspection, confession, repentance and restoration. Victory comes to believers who fight to remain unified.
One component of Kingdom unity is revealed in how God has designed all of our individual giftings and callings to function together. We are not merely to get along with one another, we are to intertwine ourselves with each other in order to fulfil the mission of God in our generation. As the Holy Spirit has intentionally gifted us differently from each other, He then braids our lives together so that we move in the Kingdom as one body, with Jesus as the head. This message celebrates our diversity, while also emphasizing the seriousness that we intentionally honor, appreciate and cooperate with those whom God has made differently than we are made by Him.
