At the end of World War Two RAF Coastal Command faced the same challenges of all the British military services, one of reduction, cutbacks and a return to a peaceful world.

The threat from the axis powers had been effectively squashed but there was a new threat emerging, in the form of the Soviet Union.

Coastal Command had to start learning about new adversaries once again, adapting and performing immediately, to protect British interests initially in thenorthern Atlantic, but rapidly elsewhere.

For almost 60 Cold War years, the RAF relied heavily on two aircraft types, through various models, enhancements and sheer longevity. The Avro Shackleton and the Hawker Siddeley Nimrod.

Chris Gibson author of the brilliant book ‘Nimrod's Genesis’, joins us to help understand the new threat and explain to process the UK took to replace its oldaircraft with new more sophisticated platforms.

Samuel de Korte is a graduate student of Utrecht University, where he studied an MA in the Cultural History of Modern Europe.

He wrote his Master's thesis about the representation of black Americans during the Second World War, indicating that although they formed a substantial part of the American armed forces, they don't receive an equal share in the representation in contemporary media.

His new book ‘Tuskegee Airmen - Dogfighting with the Luftwaffe and Jim Crow’ is published by Pen and Sword.

We focus on the human and personal issues they faced. If unfamiliar with the events, this can be a sensitive issue that some might find uncomfortable.

Steven Bailey discovered that the story of the U.S. Navy airstrikes on Japanese-held Hong Kong during the final year of World War II had never been told.

Operation Gratitude involved nearly 100 U.S. Navy warships and close to a thousand planes.

His new book ‘Target Hong Kong’ brings this massive operation down to a human scale, recounting the air raids through the experiences of seven men whose lives intersected at Hong Kong in January 1945.

Steven joins us to share the story and help us better understand the Operation, its people and its legacy.

In 2021, Xwing made history by completing the world’s first autonomous cargo flight.

During the demonstration — Xwing’s CESSNA 208 Caravan backed out of its gate, taxied onto the runway, took off, flew a predetermined mission, landed, and returned to its gate. All entirely on its own. The flight was supervised by Xwing’s remote crew on the ground, along with a safety pilot.

We are joined by Max Gariel the Co-Founder, President and Chief Technology Officer for Xwing.

We continue our Test Pilot series with Commander Nathan Gray, who joins us to talk about his book ‘Hazard Spectrum’. With over 140 combat missions to his name, he is among the most decorated pilots in the British armed forces and we share Nathan’s journey to the top of the Fleet Air Arm, from student to F-35 Test Pilot.

But, the episode starts with the sobering account of how he walked away from an ‘unsurvivable’ crash at RAF Wittering, which sadly killed his instructor. Nathan is one of the humblest heroes we have had the pleasure to interview. He is also one of our most talented pilots, flying and test flying with the Fleet Air Arm for over two decades on various aircraft including the Harrier, F-15, F-16, F-18, and of course F-35.

His career has taken him from the Californian coast of the United States to war zones in the Middle East. Nathan was part of the ground-breaking F-35 development program and conducted the first-ever F-35 launch and recovery on the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers. He has also qualified as a commando green beret, paratrooper, and forward air controller.

This is an unmissable episode!

Dave Homewood from the Wings Over New Zealand podcast took on the almighty task of a 35-day tour of as many UK aviation heritage locations as he could squeeze in. All in the spirit of recording a new podcast series called the Wings Over Britain!

The first few episodes are already out, and they bring a fresh view of the sector from an avid enthusiast but also from an advocate (in Dave) for keeping alive the stories and memories of those who operated and flew these aircraft. Hear Dave’s view of how lucky we are in the UK to have such a rich source of aviation history right on our doorstep.

In the book 'Royal Navy Cold War Buccaneer Pilot', author Simon Kershaw helps us relive the story of his father Steve Kershaw flying the mighty Buccaneer in Fleet Air Arm service.

Much of the tale comes from Steve’s own notes and memoirs, then picked up by Simon’s analysis of his final flight.

In the sobering finale we discuss Steve’s final flight and how Simon was able to piece together the hours, minutes and seconds both before and after the accident.

Simon Kershaw joins us to help rekindle the story of his father’s adventures.

Graeme Rendall has appeared several times on Xtended to talk about such diverse topics as Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon and the history of RAF Morpeth. On both occasions these episodes proved popular and we teased you with mention of a plane spotting trip Graeme made to Russia in 1992, just six months after the fall of the iron curtain; a trip that even until today has never been repeated.

Graeme is back to tell us all about the journey recorded in his book “To The Ends Of The Earth: A Snapshot Of Aviation In North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992” the amazing and rare aircraft he saw and the whole post-Soviet Union aviation experience.

‘Confessions of a Flying Instructor: Teaching the RAF’s Fighter Pilots’ is Tug Wilson’s second book and he joins us to discuss the time in his career teaching new fighter pilots. As always, Tug is great company with Gareth in this sometimes hilarious, and at other times frightening, story of his time as a flight instructor.

Tug Wilson grew up in North Yorkshire and in 1985, his dream came true when he joined the RAF. He was selected to fly the mighty Phantom for his first tour.

After raging around for three years at the frontline, Wilson became a tactics and flying instructor on the BAE Systems Hawk. Following this, he was extremely lucky in securing an exchange tour with the US Marine Corps flying the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornet in California. His final flying tour was on the Tornado F3.

‘Confessions of a Phantom Pilot: Memories of Flying the Phantom FGR2’ was Tug’s first book.

In the second part of our feature Sree (KS Nair) talks to us about IAF Training, aircraft types and ground attack tactics. We expose some of the challenges around motivation as well as culture and work through the quote from many at the time that “The Indian Air Force was an experiment that was never meant to succeed”.

K.S. NAIR is the son and son-in-law of Indian Air Force officers. He is a graduate of IIT Delhi and IIM Bangalore, and a former director and CEO of multinational consulting firms. But, beyond that, he has been a lifelong student of Indian aviation history.

He has collected aviation-related material with an India connection from around the globe. He counts himself fortunate to have grown up around people who played key roles in some of the Air Force’s finest hours (as well as some of its most difficult), and having met several key figures from the periods he writes about.

He has published a number of articles on the Indian armed forces in Indian, American and British journals. This is his second book; his first, ‘Ganesha’s Flyboys’ (2012), covered the Indian Air Force’s role in the first-ever UN peacekeeping mission in the Congo (where they were succeeded in their UN role by a detachment of Swedish Saab J29 Tunnans). His third book, published in mid-2022, covers the Indian armed forces’ role in the independence of Bangladesh.

The air war in India and Burma (World War Two) has not received the focus it deserves. In this episode we talk to author K.S. The story of China is space is not one widely known nor properly understood in Western corridors, although China of course has been launching rockets for almost a thousand years. In this episode we welcome back author and Chinese space expert Brian Harvey to help us address that.

In 2019, China astonished the world by landing a spacecraft and rover on the far side of the Moon, something never achieved by any country before. China had already become a leading spacefaring nation alongside the United States and Russia, sending men and women into orbit, building a space laboratory (Tiangong) and sending probes to the Moon and asteroids.

Cranfield Aerospace Solutions’ (CAeS) is an established aerospace business of over 33 years, with 100+ staff and is one of very few aerospace SMEs globally to have both whole aircraft concept design capability and to hold a range of regulatory approvals for the design and manufacture of modifications to existing aircraft.

CAeS is based at Cranfield Airport, Bedfordshire, UK where the company has access to some of the UK’s most advanced aviation test and research facilities.

Phase 1 of their roadmap is “Project Fresson” – the conversion of a Britten-Norman Islander 9-seat aircraft from conventional fossil fuel to that of gaseous hydrogen propulsion. This development is set to deliver the world’s first fully certified, truly green, passenger-carrying aircraft using hydrogen fuel cell technology. The end solution will deliver emissions-free commercial air travel and is planned to be certified for passenger flight in 2026.

CAeS ultimate ambition is to become an aircraft designer and manufacturer of zero emissions aircraft.

Few aircraft encompass as many contradictions as the Fairey Swordfish – the legendary ‘Stringbag’ naval torpedo bomber which was approaching antiquation at the start of the second world war yet struck mortal blows against some of the most powerful battleships in the Axis fleets.

We are joined by Naval Air Historian Matt Willis to discuss many of the lesser known aspects of the aircraft and its real impact on World War Two Fleet Air Arm operations.

Mike Bannister joins us to talk about Concorde and his career flying the supersonic airliner. He became the youngest pilot on the Concorde fleet in 1977, was appointed the airline’s Chief Concorde Pilot in 1995 and regularly flew as Captain on all of the aircraft’s routes worldwide.

He was at the controls when the British Airways’ Supersonic Flagship returned to service in November 2001, and commanded and flew the final Concorde commercial flight from New York to London on October 24th 2004. By the time Concorde retired Mike had amassed over 9,200 Concorde flight hours – around 6,900 at supersonic speeds. For over 10 years he was extensively involved as an expert witness and lead technical advisor in the ‘Air France Concorde Trial.’

Mike’s book ‘Concorde: The thrilling account of history’s most extraordinary airliner’ is available through our bookstore https://uk.bookshop.org/a/11161/9780241557006

Consider for a moment repairing and loading aircraft at -30 degrees with no cover, flying in thick cloud through heavy flak and snow with no idea if you might get through or even deliver your precious cargo. Robert Forsyth talks us through the Luftwaffe’s Stalingrad Airlift, a less well-known event in the tragic Stalingrad story.

He brings to life the challenges, horror and heroism of the pilots and crews who tried to save those trapped in the ‘pocket’.

His new book is published by Osprey Publishing and is available now on our Bookshop and is called ‘To Save An Army: The Stalingrad Airlift’.

Robert is an author, editor and publisher specialising in historic military aviation. He set up his own publishing company in 1994 to publish his first book and has gone on to write more than thirty titles on the aircraft, campaigns and units of the Luftwaffe, an interest he has held since boyhood.

Robert is a member of the editorial board of ‘The Aviation Historian’ and was of course an expert guest on our Coastal Command series and featured in Episode 126 on the Luftwaffe’s special weapons.

Graeme Rendall returns to tell us the story behind the airfield at RAF Morpeth.

In World War Two, RAF Morpeth was extremely important to Bomber and Coastal Commands, as the station was home to an Air Gunners School which trained airmen how to shoot effectively whilst in mid-air.

Trained gunners were constantly in demand and often in short supply. Many of the pilots of the training aircraft based at Morpeth were from other Allied nations and Graeme gives us a really interesting view of operations at the airfield.

Post-war, like many airfields, it lost its status and faded away with only relics remaining today.

Graeme also gives us an insight to his other three Northumberland airfield books, from air crashes to storage facilities.

Welcome to our Coastal Command series. This is Chapter 9 – RAF Thorney Island.

In this chapter we look at the role of the RAF Coastal Command airfield at Thorney Island.

No 487 Squadron RAF Thorney Island 1944 – Courtesy of New Zealand Bomber Command Association

From the outset of this series, the airfield at Thorney Island has remained prominent and been mentioned in almost every chapter. So, whilst recognising that other Coastal Command airfields also played prominent roles in the war, we decided to tell you about the history of this particular location and how it was used as a Coastal Command forward operating airfield throughout World War Two.

We hear about the aircraft, the squadrons and the stories.

Note the attempt to camouflage the airfield and runways as hedge and field patterns. Photo by No 1 Photographic Reconnaissance Unit (c) IWM

The research we undertook is authentic, but we are grateful to Robin Brooks. His book ‘Sussex Airfields in the Second World War’ became the spark for Pieter to research the airfield in more detail.

So, here is the story of RAF Thorney Island, a Coastal Command airfield, researched by Pieter Johnson and read by Gareth Stringer.

Welcome to our Coastal Command series. This is Chapter 7 – Australian & Allied Aircrews.

In this chapter we hear the reports and stories of aircrews from Australia, Jamaica, Canada and Morocco. Their commitment, heroism, and ultimate sacrifice.

We talk to Keith Webb about the Australian aircrews and his personal links through his uncle Flying Officer Keith Wathen who was sadly lost in combat.

Keith is an experienced cinematographer, editor, writer and voiceover artist. Over the past 35 years Keith has directed thousands of Video and TV projects. Keith is also Project Director for the Temora Aviation Museum’s Unsung Heroes project, a video archive comprising hundreds of interviews with veterans from WW2, the Korean War, Vietnam and beyond.

We have an insert piece recorded by The Australian War Memorial for the Keith Murdoch Sound Archive and we kindly acknowledge the use of this recording for our programme here. It is with Flight Lieutenant Tom Fitzgerald, a Navigator in 547 Squadron talking about his time flying the Liberators in Coastal Command.

Finally, we turn to Andy Bird who gives us an insight in to three characters who served in Coastal Command from Jamaica, Canada and French Morocco. Andrew Bird studied at Reading College of Art & Design and served in Royal Air Force Reserves based at Brize Norton, Oxfordshire working extensively with The Artists Rifles (Reserves). Andy is an author and military historian, publishing books in particular on the maritime air war in Europe. He started researching and corresponding with former Coastal Command Anti-Shipping Strike aircrews and ground staff 32 years ago and has a wealth of material and scanned images.

Welcome to our Coastal Command series. This is Chapter 6 – The Adversaries.

In this chapter we look at the adversaries for RAF Coastal Command.

Understanding the U boats and their armament, we talk to Mark Lardas, author of Battle of the Atlantic 1939–41 – RAF Coastal Command’s Hardest Fight Against The U-Boats from Osprey publishing. Mark talks us through the different U Boat types and their specifications in an interesting view of the Coastal Command adversary!

Welcome once again to our Coastal Command series. This is Chapter 5 – Kiwi Crews.

In this chapter we look at the role and involvement of aircrews from New Zealand in RAF Coastal Command. Dave Homewood from the Wings Over New Zealand podcast interviews Dave Duxbury and Don Wilkie in this episode and joins us to co-host the chapter.

489 NZ Squadron Crew (c) Don Wilkie – Back Row Left to Right: F/O Jolly, F/O Parkin, S/L Reynolds, F/O Nugent, W/O Davidson, W/C Hammond, F/O Southernwood, F/O Ward
Front Row Left to Right: W/O Graham, F/S Priest, F/O Marsh, F/O Gray. April 1945 Air Force Museum of NZ

David Duxbury is well known in aviation circles as a prolific historian and researcher, and an author of several books including Aircraft of the Royal New Zealand Air Force. He volunteers several days a week at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand, working in their archives as a researcher.

He is considered a walking-talking encyclopedia of RNZAF history, and what he does not know, he researches in depth.

Don Wilkie is an artist. He has worked in publishing and had his own graphic design company, but he began painting seriously in 2012. He has a love of aviation history and has specialised in painting scenes of RNZAF history, particularly from WWII. It was when he was researching for some paintings of No. 489 Squadron Beaufighters he realised that there was so little published history available on that New Zealand squadron that served in RAF Coastal Command.

Don Wilkie – Copyright www.artistdonwilkie.co.nz

So, he set about researching and writing his own book, which is close to being published. Along the way his research has expanded his knowledge of what the men of No. 489 (NZ) Squadron accomplished during WWII.

In this chapter we talk to Ian Thirsk about the various aircraft types and their roles across the campaign. We have an interesting view of the Avro Anson thanks to an interview with Bill Reid who has the only airworthy Anson Mk1 and we also catch up with Andrew Bird to discuss the Blenheim’s Coastal Command service in detail.

Avro Anson Mk I Mh-120 – Gentle Annie (Copyright Bill Reid & Warbirds Ltd)

Ian was Head of Collections at The Royal Air Force Museum, with responsibility for the large 3D object collections (aeroplanes)! Whilst with the RAF Museum, Ian was responsible for projects such as the Dornier 17 recovery from the Goodwin Sands in 2012.

He is a self-declared de Havilland Mosquito addict and has been volunteering for the De Havilland Museum for over forty years. He is involved in their restoration projects and has worked on Mosquito-B35-TA634 and is currently working on the FP6 Restoration.

Bill Reid is the son of John Reid, a WWII RNZAF fighter pilot who became a helicopter pioneer. Bill took over his father’s company Helicopters New Zealand Ltd and is now one of NZ’s most experienced and respected helicopter pilots.

He and his late wife Robyn restored the Anson themselves and it is regarded as one of the very best restorations of any WWII aircraft in the world for authenticity. Bill loves WWII aviation history, and he was a key member of the team that restored the late John Smith’s Mosquito to running condition.

Andrew Bird studied at Reading College of Art & Design and served in Royal Air Force Reserves based at Brize Norton, Oxfordshire working extensively with The Artists Rifles (Reserves).

He is the author of ‘A Separate Little War’, ‘Coastal Dawn’ and ‘Heroes of Coastal Command: The RAF’s Maritime War 1939’. He has written for several newspapers and magazines and has also written, presented, or acted as a historical consultant in documentaries, for BBC Radio and Television, C4, and NRK in Norway.
