"What will people say?" If you're Nigerian or African, you must be very familiar with this statement. It has ended a lot of dreams, masked a lot of abilities, and put pressure on people to live a certain type of way.
It's even worse when the reason parents say it is not about protecting you, but protecting their own interests. You know, the parents that put pressure on you to live or act in certain ways so they can either protect their image or so you as a child can fit into the society's definition of Being responsible! Why are they so bothered about what people think? Are they aware of the negative effects on children? Do they even care? Can they be helped? Does what people say about you even matter?
