Today was the last day of the conference! Teams 3 and 1 helped with childcare. It went smoother today! We had some village kids come to Sunday school, so we let them learn and play with us for some time. There were some great topics talked about today. Today was our first conference day! We divided into three teams to work in child care. Groups one and two worked today. If we weren’t scheduled to help out, we listened to the speakers. Today was the last day of us helping Grace Bible Church (Kondi’s church) with VBS. After morning medications and lots of oranges for breakfast, we made our way over. Helping at GBC’s VBS started today! The team woke up, ate breakfast, and headed out to the church at a later time than the past few days. As we were driving, children started running alongside our bus down the road. They followed us to the church where they cheered when we exited the bus. Today we held the last day of VBS at RBC. We had about 325 kids in attendance with around 50 volunteers. All things considered, today went smoother than yesterday. We loaded on the bus around the same time (7:30) to be greeted at the church by kids. Some had shown up as early as 7, and VBS didn’t start until 9. More kids continued to appear as we continued preparations for the day. Instead of playing VBS music at the […]
Today was our first day working in a VBS, and there were definitely some unexpected occurrences. RBC was expecting about 60 kids to be in attendance this morning. There were about 250 who came. Our schedule was basically thrown out the window. We started the morning with some singing, and kids kept pouring through the doors. Today we went to the church services. We sent a group early at 7:30 to pray over the service at Reformation Bible Church (Newton’s church). The rest of the team headed out at 8:00 to both churches (RBC and Grace Bible Church). Daniel spoke during the ‘teaching’ portion of the services while Jimmy preached at RBC. Today the team took a trip to the tourist attraction of Lake Malawi. We started the morning out with some breakfast before loading onto the bus. During a quick stop to buy some water and meet up with the families, a game of frisbee started in the parking lot. At 3:30 Thursday morning, a team of twenty-five individuals began their trip to Malawi, Africa. While in Africa, we plan to assist two churches at their VBS’s and a conference. To start off, the team held a meeting and was prayed over by Pastor Ritch. We then loaded onto two busses and rode three and a half hours to O’Hare Airport (thank you to our generous drivers). Video Discussion Q+A1) Where did The Angel of the Lord tell Philip to go? What kind of a place was it?– The Angel of the Lord sent Philip down to the road that goes from Jerusalem to Gaza. He did not tell Philip what he would find there, but Philip obeyed and went. This was a desert place. It would make more sense for Philip to go to a place with more people but this time God was going to do something with an individual person to show the power of the Gospel.
2) What kind of person did Philip see when he was going on the road to Gaza?– Philip saw an Ethiopian Eunuch sitting in his chariot. He was going back home from worshipping God in Jerusalem. He was a top official in the court of the queen.
3) What was the Ethiopian Eunuch Reading? Did he understand it?– The Ethiopian Eunuch was reading the prophet Isaiah. Specifically he was reading Isaiah 53. The Eunuch wasn’t able to understand the Scripture because the natural person without the salvation of God and the illumination of the Holy Spirit cannot understand the things of God. Philip needed to share the Gospel of Jesus with him and the Holy Spirit would be the one to open the man’s eyes.
4) Why was it important to have this story in the book of Acts?– This story was to show how Jesus is bringing the promises of Isaiah to their fulfillment and show how the Gospel is for anyone. It was to show that no matter the background of someone, Jesus has broken down the walls that divided and separated by his life and death (Eph 2:11-21).
5) What does this story mean for you and me?– This story teaches us that the Gospel needs to be shared in order for someone to come to know God. It is through Jesus that one comes to God. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6). This story should show us that God will receive anyone who believes in him and they can receive the same gift of the Holy Spirit and co-heirs with Christ.

Video Discussion Q+A1) Who was the lead persecutor of the early church? Why? (see Acts 26:9-11)– It was Saul who was later saved by God and called to go preach the Gospel to the Gentile world. Saul thought he was serving God by persecuting Christians because he thought they were teaching a false gospel.
2) How does persecution lead to the spreading of the Gospel?– When the church was being persecuted by Saul and others of the Jewish leadership, many new believers fled from Jerusalem. This resulted in Christians going to all the region of Israel and Samaria and beyond. Because of this, Christians were living and proclaiming the Gospel in places they may not have gone to if not for this persecution.
3) Why was it such a big deal that Simon the Sorcerer believed in Phillip’s Gospel?– It was a big deal because Simon had amazed the people with his tricks, sorcery, and magic. When he saw the power of God at work, he too was amazed. This was real power. This was God’s power. He knew what the apostles were saying was true, and it was verified with the real miracles the apostles were doing.
4) Why did the Holy Spirit come and indwell the Samaritan’s only once Peter and John arrived to lay hands on them and baptise them? Why not when they first believed like the Jews?– Luke is telling us something very important here. The Holy Spirit was normally given upon faith in Jesus and that faith was shown by immediately baptizing someone. Here, the people of Samaria were baptized but the Holy Spirit did not indwell them yet. This was not normal. This was different. It was different because God was making sure his disciples knew that God shows no partiality and that anyone who comes to faith in him can become a part of his people, even Samaritans. He wanted his apostles to know and see that the Holy Spirit was given to Samaritans too (see Acts 10:34-35). Through Peter and John, the apostles verify and experience themselves what God has already said would happen (Matthew 28:19-20)
5) Why does Peter rebuke Simon when he asked for the Holy Spirit to be given to him too?– It was because Simon was asking for it with a wrong heart and wrong motives. Simon thought he could control the Holy Spirit and receive the gift of God through buying the Spirit with money. Peter rebukes him and tells him that the Holy Spirit cannot be bought or manipulated through the efforts of men. Salvation that comes from God through the death and resurrection of Jesus and the giving of the Holy Spirit is a gift that only God gives.
6) What does this mean for you and me?– This story shows us that anyone can come to saving faith in Jesus and receive the same gift of the Holy Spirit. Jesus is willing to adopt anyone into his family as children of God. All of us who believe in this gift receive the Holy Spirit as a gift from God. Let’s thank God for this gift, serve him today with greater obedience, and make sure that we are not trying to receive anything from God and think it’s because of how obedient or how important we are. It is God who loves us even when we were still sinners (Romans 5:8).

Video Discussion Q+A1) Who captured the Disciples and put them in prison? Why?The High Priest and the rest of the Sadducees that were a part of the Sahedrin, the leaders of Israel. The put the Disciples in prison because they were jealous of the popularity they had with the people, more and more people joining the disciples, and because of the miracles that were being done through them.
2) How did the disciples escape prison? What were they commanded to do after escaping?God sent an angel to come and bring them out of the prison. The angel told the disciples that instead of going and hiding, that they should go to the temple in front of everyone and keep talking about the Gospel of Jesus.
3) What were the disciples commanded NOT to do by the Jewish Leaders? What was Peter’s Answer?They were commanded to not preach or declare any message through the name of Jesus. Peter answered the Sanhedrin and told them that he and the rest of the disciples were going to obey God instead of obeying men. Peter then shared the Gospel with them and told them that he and the rest of the disciples were witnesses to the resurrection of Jesus.
4) Why did the Council want to kill the disciples? What stopped them?The Counsel, or the Sanhedrin, wanted to kill them because the disciples were claiming that they killed the Messiah that was promised in the Old Testament. They also wanted to kill them because they were claiming that they had the Holy Spirit of God in them and the Holy Spirit is given to any who obey Jesus. That meant that the Jewish leaders were then disobeying God, killed the Messiah, and did not have the Holy Spirit. The reason why the Sanhedrin didn’t try to kill them was because a pharisee named Gamaliel convinced them to let the ‘Jesus movement’ play out. There were other ‘so-called’ messiahs that had come before Jesus and they all fizzled out. Gamaliel said that if Jesus wasn’t the true messiah, his followers would come to nothing. But if Jesus was the messiah, there was nothing they could do to stop it. So, he was telling them to be patient and see what would happen.
5) When the Disciples were let go, why did they rejoice?They rejoiced that they were able to suffer in a way that was similar to Jesus. In this, they were able to rejoice that Jesus would have them suffer because of his name. They considered it an honor to suffer because they identified with Jesus and God would see their suffering and not let it be in vain. And so they kept preaching and telling people about Jesus and that he truly was and is the Messiah.

Video Discussion Q+A1) Because the Holy Spirit now lives inside believers in Jesus, how does Luke tell us how they treat one another?He says that everything they own they now are ready to give to supply any needs their fellow believers in Jesus would have. They have one heart and one soul together. This is what the Holy Spirit does; he brings people together for the same purpose and mission.
2) What example does Luke tell us about?He tells us about Barnabas and how he sold a field and brought the money to the disciples to do whatever they thought would be best with it. He brings it with truthfulness and sincerity in his heart. This is pure worship to the Lord.
3) Who does Luke compare Barnabas to? What does this person do that is different from Barnabas?Luke tells us about Ananias and Sapphira. He says that Ananias also sold a piece of land to bring money and give it to the apostles. The big difference here is that Ananias lies about how much he sold the field for. If he was honest, he would have not been in sin, but because of his deceit and hypocrisy, he was guilty of lying to the Holy Spirit, lying to God himself.
4) What was the punishment for Ananias and Sapphira?They both immediately fell dead at the feet of the apostles; first Ananias, and then his wife 3 hours later. They both agreed to lie about what they had done and wanted to be recognized as making a large sacrifice but in reality did not.
5) What does the punishment for Ananias and Sapphira teach us about the Church and about God?God cares about the holiness of his church. He cares about its purity. This story shows us that those who live in a way that is different than being filled with the Spirit are liable to judgment (1 Corinthians 11:30-32). God’s holiness is a serious thing, and God doesn’t take lightly the people who say that they are with him, but deny that they know him by the way they live. To be the temple of God where the Holy Spirit lives is a serious thing (2 Cor 7:1). Let’s live with confidence in God’s love for us and also with a seriousness knowing that he is with us and in us.

Why we send Support LettersRaising prayer & financial support is critical to all short-term trip experiences. Our travelers have all been asked to pray about their participation on this team, and to join the team only if they believe that God is calling them to do so. This is a spiritual journey, so it can be successful only if it is covered in much prayer. The travelers are to be praying for this trip, but the full team is much bigger than just the travelers. Anyone who commits to pray for the team, and anyone who supports the team financially becomes a member of the team that God is calling to this work. We are thankful for all of you who join this bigger God-called team!
Who sends support letters to whomEach traveler, either individually or as a family of travelers, has written a support letter. They have also compiled a list of people to whom they are sending their support letter packet. The packet consists of their support letter, a team information sheet, a response card and a return envelope. In cases where a particular recipient is on more than one list, one traveler is selected to send the packet, and the letter of any other travelers that also had that recipient on their list are added to the packet along with a note that explains the multiple support letters. We raised prayer & financial support as a team, so it is not critical who’s name is on the response card, and there is no need to respond to multiple travelers. The response card name is there only for accountability, so that the team knows who is responsible to thank a respondent for their response.

Video Discussion Q+A1) How long had the man Peter healed been unable to walk? How did Peter heal him?The Bible says the man was lame from birth. He had never been able to walk. Peter healed the man through the power from the name of Jesus. This healing was immediate and it caused the man to have muscles that would have taken years to rebuild. This was a complete miracle. The Bible says the man was over 40 years old.
2) The Miracle gave Peter the opportunity to share the Gospel. Who does Peter talk about in 3:22 and in 3:25? Why Moses and Abraham?Peter talks about Moses and Abraham to show us that believing in Jesus means that we are believing in the one that brings the blessing of Abraham and is the prophet that was promised greater than Moses. Both Abraham and Moses point to a messiah and that messiah is Jesus.
3) What question do the religious leaders ask Peter and John? Does Peter answer their question?They ask them by what name the man born lame was healed. Peter does answer them and he says that it is through faith in the name of Jesus that the man born lame was healed. This is a picture of what believing in Jesus’ name can do to someone’s heart. Jesus can heal and restore and transform any heart that comes to him in faith.
4) How did the religious leaders know Peter and John had been with Jesus?It was when they saw their boldness and courage. They knew the apostles had been with Jesus because only that kind of boldness and courage could come from someone who had been with Jesus because Jesus was full of boldness and courage. The same Spirit that anointed Jesus ministry was now indwelling the disciples.
5) After Peter and John were released what did they do? What psalm did they quote in their prayer?They go back to the other disciples and they break out in prayer thanking God and asking him to give them more boldness to speak the Gospel about Jesus. They quote Psalm 2 because they realize that the nations are raging against the Lord and his anointed, just like that Psalm said they would.

Video Discussion Q+A1) What did the disciples hear and see when the Holy Spirit came upon them at Pentecost? What was the Sign that the Holy Spirit was with them?– They hear a mighty rushing wind and see tongues like fire come to rest on the heads of each of the apostles. The Holy Spirit filled the disciples with his presence, just like Jesus said he would. The sign was that people were hearing the disciples speak in other languages to hear about the mighty things that God has done.
2) What did the people in Jerusalem do when they heard the disciples speaking in their languages?– They were first amazed and astonished to hear these men speaking their language and they wanted to hear what was being said. When God confused the nations languages in judgment in Genesis 11, here we see Babel reversed so that through Jesus, the blessing of hearing the Gospel can come to all the nations.
3) What Old Testament Prophet does Peter quote to show the people what was really happening? Why?– Peter quotes the prophet Joel. Joel was prophesying about the coming judgment and salvation of God. Often the prophet speaks of them both coming at the same time as one event, but here, Peter quotes Joel because the judgment of God will come later but the pouring out of the Holy Spirit is happening now. Now is the time to believe before the judgment of God soon comes.
4) What King does Peter compare Jesus to? How does he contrast them?– Peter compares David and Jesus because Jesus is David’s Son. But in contrast, even though Jesus is David’s Son, he’s also David’s Lord because he is God. David’s body was not yet resurrected, but Jesus’ body was resurrected after 3 days in the grave. The promise God made to David, is fulfilled in Jesus. Jesus was resurrected and raised to heaven and has now sent the Holy Spirit to be with his people.
5) What are the two names God the Father gives to Jesus? Why does this matter?– The two names that God the Father gives to Jesus, are the names Lord and Christ. Jesus has always been God, but now through the cross, we see Jesus to truly be the Lord and Christ as the anointed messiah of God. This is the one the Jews were waiting for the fulfillment of all God’s promises, and they killed him! If anyone was deserving of judgment, it was them!
6) When the people hear the news about a crucified messiah, what do they do? What does Peter tell them?– When the people hear they killed the messiah, they are cut to the heart and ask Peter what they could even do! It was a cry of help and despair! But Peter tells them to repent, be baptized into the name of Jesus, and they would receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. God offered them full forgiveness and pardon for the sin of crucifying the messiah, but Jesus is amazingly willing to forgive them and for them to become a part of his people.

Video Discussion Q+A1) Why does Luke tell us at the beginning of Acts about what Jesus ‘began’ to do and teach? Why is that Important?– Luke tells us this because even though Jesus is about to leave this world and enter into heaven, he is still with his disciples and is still doing his work through them. Jesus still works in the book of Acts and he does it through the hands of his disciples and the power of the Holy Spirit with them.
2) How does Jesus show his apostles that he was really and truly alive? What does Luke say in verse 3?– Luke says he showed them he was really alive by many ‘proofs’. Some of those could be when he showed them his hands and feet, had them touch him, ate fish with them in Galilee, etc… Either way, Jesus was with them for 40 days before he ascended to heaven and was teaching them about the kingdom of God.
3) What did Jesus tell the Disciples to wait for in Jerusalem?– He told them to stay in Jerusalem and wait for ‘the promise of the Father’. This promise is the coming of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit was promised in the Old Testament to come with the new covenant (Jer 31, Ezekiel 34).
4) When the disciples asked if Jesus was going to restore the kingdom now, did Jesus answer their question? (Why or why not?)– Jesus did not directly answer their question. Instead, he pointed them to the fact that they would be his witnesses first in Jerusalem and then to the entire world. That is how the kingdom was going to be expanded.
5) What do the angels tell the disciples when they stand watching Jesus go into heaven?– They asked the disciples why they kept looking up to heaven. This was probably because Jesus had just told them there was work to be done. The Angels promise the disciples that Jesus was going to come back in the same way that he came into heaven. So, they should go about proclaiming the good news before his return.

Video Discussion Q+A1) Why were the women going so early to the tomb of Jesus? Why would they have been afraid when they arrived? – They were going because they were going to finish preparing Jesus’ body for burial. When they arrived there was an earthquake, angel from heaven, rolling the stone back, with the appearance like lightning and white clothing. The women didn’t know the tomb had been sealed, but this would have let them in to see what was no longer there, Jesus’ body. He had risen.
2) What did the angel show to the women and then tell them to do? – The angel said that Jesus was risen from the dead just like he said. He also told them to actually see with their own eyes the place where the body of Jesus used to lay. Finally, he told them to go tell the disciples to meet Jesus in Galilee.
3) When the women met Jesus, they touched his feet and worshiped him. Why is this important? – This shows us that the body of Jesus was not a figure of their imagination, or a mirage, or a spiritual resurrection. This was a bodily resurrection from the dead. Jesus was really raised from the dead. Not only that, but Jesus received their worship. If Jesus was not truly God, this would have been idolatry because you were to worship God alone. By Jesus receiving and accepting their worship, it shows that he really is God the Son come in the flesh.
4) What did the chief priests do to keep people from believing what really happened? – The Chief Priests bribed the guards who witnessed the angel and the empty tomb. They gave them a large amount of money to lie and say the disciples came during the night while they were asleep to steal the body.
5) What did Jesus say was given to him after his resurrection? How are the apostles to make more disciples? – Jesus said that he had now been given all authority in heaven and on earth. With that kingdom authority, the apostles were supposed to go to all the earth and make disciples from every nation. They were to baptize them in the Father, Son, and Spirit, and to learn to keep what Jesus commanded. Why could the disciples do this? Because Jesus would always be with them by the Holy Spirit soon to be in them in just 50 days at Pentecost.

Video Discussion Q+A1) How did the Roman Soldiers Mock Jesus? – They took a crown of thorns, a scarlet robe, and a reed for a scepter and placed those on him. they then took the reed and beat him with it. They called out and said sarcastically ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’
2) What was everyone telling Jesus to do on the cross to prove he was the Son of God?– They called out to him to come down from the cross. This would have taken a miracle, but it would have proved that he was the Son of God. However, Jesus had done so many miracles to show this already, would this one have been any different?
3) Why does Matthew tell us about the 6 hours Jesus was on the cross and why does he mention darkness?– Matthew tells us these things because he wants us to see that Jesus is the true passover sacrifical lamb who is being sacrificed for the sins of his people. The judgment of God was about to come, but not on the people, but on Christ. Like the 9th plague of Egypt and the 10th plague coming on the first born, Jesus the true firstborn son was going to die for the sins of the people and take the judgment they deserved.
4) Why did the curtain split into two in the Temple? Why does that matter? – The curtain tore in two to show us the way to God was open, but it was specifically showing that they way to God has changed! It means that the temple that always pointed to the heavenly one was now going to be through Jesus. It is through Jesus, the greater temple, that we come into the presence of God. It is no longer through the earthly temple we access God, it is through Jesus who has went into the heavenly temple to offer himself (Hebrews 9:11).
5) What did the Centurion say about Jesus and what does that show? – The Centurion and others who were with him, when they saw everything that happened with Jesus when he was on the cross, said “truly this was the Son of God”. There was only one person who Romans believed or at least confessed as the representation of god/the gods and that was the Emperor, Caesar. Here, the Centurion was saying that Jesus was truly the representative of God, even God himself. This points us to what Matthew has been showing us this whole time, that Jesus is the true king and it shows us that many nations will come to believe this too.
6) Why did Pilate grant the request for a guard at the tomb and how does this give us confidence Jesus really was raised from the dead? – This would take away any doubt that the disciples would come and steal the body of Jesus and make up untrue stories about his resurrection. There was no way after sending a roman guard, sealing to tomb, and being stationed there the whole time, that the disciples could make this up. Our faith is true and Jesus was really raised from the dead.

Video Discussion Q+A1) What charge against Jesus did the elders, priests, and scribes finally use to condemn Jesus? What answer did Jesus give? – They brought up the charge that he was going to destroy the Temple and then rebuild it again. Jesus was actually talking about his body because he was the fulfillment of the temple. Finally, the high priests asked Jesus if he was the Son of God, the Messiah. Jesus says yes, and even more than that, Jesus gives a clear answer that he’s not just the Messiah, but he’s God himself. This is why he was put to death. He claimed to be God.
2) What answer did Peter give when people thought he was a follower of Jesus?– Peter was recognized as being a follower of Jesus 3 times. Each of those 3 times, he got stronger and stronger in his denial. First, he denied it. Second, he denied it with an oath. Finally, he denied it with a curse on himself to come from God if he was lying. This is incredible. Then, Peter remembered what Jesus told him and he went out to weep.
3) Why did Judas change his mind about Jesus? What did he realize? What’s the difference between him and Peter?– When Judas saw that Jesus was sentenced, he regretted what he did. He brought back the money and threw it into the temple saying that he betrayed innocent blood. He then went out and hanged himself and died. Judas’ sorrow at his betrayal of Jesus led him to sorrow and death. Peter’s sorrow eventually led him to repentance. Peter believed that Jesus would show him mercy. His was a godly grief that brings life, and not death (2 Cor 7:10)
4) Who stirred up the crowds to ask for Bar-abbas instead of Jesus? Why?– The chief priests and the elders stirred up the crowds with the charges of blasphemy. Most of these people would have been from Jerusalem and were largely not the same ones who cried out ‘hosanna’ the week before. But still, the leaders of Israel were the ones who caused the people to want to have Bar-Abbas released instead of Jesus.
5) Why did Pilate wash his hands in front of the crowds?– He did so to show that it wasn’t his desire to have Jesus put to death. Even though he was still the one who gave the order, he was showing to the people essentially that they forced his hand so that he didn’t have another option.
6) What do all of these stories have in common about how we are to see Jesus?– Jesus is the innocent lamb that was given over to die for our sins. He was silent before his accusers. He was unjustly tried and convicted. He was unjustly sentenced. He was unjustly treated, so that he would die as a sacrifice for our sins, so that we could be forgiven. Though he was the Son of God, the 2nd person of the trinity, he submitted to the Father to do what only he could do for us. What an amazing Savior!

Video Discussion Q+A1) Why did the Pharisees want to wait to kill Jesus?– They were afraid of the people in Jerusalem and wanted to wait until after the feast. They thought that there were enough people who would be in Jerusalem that it would start a riot if they arrested Jesus. But, it was God’s plan that Jesus would die on that Friday and he was in control of all the events that would make sure that it would happen.
2) What did the woman (mary) do to Jesus that would show what was about to happen to him? – Mary took some expensive ointment and poured it on Jesus’ head. This showed that she was preparing him for burial. It was more important to realize what was about to happen, for Jesus is far more precious than selling the money to give it to the poor.
3) When Jesus took the bread and wine at the passover meal, what did he say those things pointed to now?– Jesus says that the bread and wine that were meant to look back at the Exodus now were to point to him. The bread and the wine were to point to his broken body and his shed blood. This shows us that there is a new and better exodus, passover lamb, forgiveness of sin, deliverance from evil, and it is through belief in Jesus and his work he was about to do on the cross that one can receive these things.
4) When Jesus took the disciples to the Garden of Gethsemane, what happened there to show that Jesus is obedient to God? – Though Jesus said, “Let this cup pass from me” he also said “not my will, but yours be done.” Jesus submitted himself to the Father’s plan to save us, because there was no other way. Jesus passed the test where Adam failed. Adam failed the test of obedience with the test of a tree, in a garden, but Jesus did not. Jesus was faithful fully to God and because of this, we can receive forgiveness from our sins by believing in him.
5) Why did Jesus let them arrest him so easily? Was he taken off guard? – Jesus knew what was about to happen because he knew the scriptures. He knew that he would be betrayed by a close friend. He knew the disciples were going to leave. He knew that he could call down thousands of angels to save him if he wanted. But, he didn’t. He knew that this was God’s plan and Jesus was faithful to the end to his Father’s will. Praise God we have a faithful savior who fulfilled every single part of scripture for us. Let us believe in him and receive the forgiveness he earned through obeying the Father. And let us remember to live for him each day because of his great love for us!

Video Discussion Q+A1) What was Jesus talking about right before he shared the Parable of the Talents?– He was sharing with his disciples about his return. Jesus was sharing with them about his judgment on Jerusalem and about his final judgment before setting up his kingdom.
2) How many servants were there and how much money were they given?– There were 3 servants in the story and they were each given different amounts of money. A talent was still a lot of money, 20 years worth of wages. One was given 5, another 2, and the last one.
3) When the Master came back from his journey, how much did the servants make and how were they rewarded?– The servants who were given 5 and 2, doubled their money and gave it back to their Master. The last servant who received one, put it in the ground and did nothing with what was given to him. The two servants who doubled their money were given the reward of entering into the joy of the Master. The servant who buried his money, was cast into outer darkness.
4) Why was the one talent taken from the last servant and given to the first servant?– Jesus was teaching the disciples about true faith. He was teaching that those who truly know their Master (God) will work for him and live their lives in service to him. Those who do not know the Lord and his character, will not work for the kingdom and chose to waste what was entrusted to them. It will be proof that they were never really true servants of the Master to begin with, because true faith always works (James 2).
5) What do the servants teach us about ourselves and about God?– God is the Master of everything. God entrusts us with the responsibility that he has given according to our ability. Those who profess to be servants of Christ will prove that by the way that they work for him. True saving faith always produces fruit. Those who say they know God, but deny him with their works, show that they really do not know him. This tells you and me that not everyone who claims to be a christian, truly is one. Only those who obey the word of God and act on it show that they truly know Jesus. Jesus will return in judgment one day soon and separate the sheep (believers) and goats (unbelievers, and professing believers but are really unbelievers). All those who have truly believed in him will enter into eternal life with him. Praise the Lord that he sees our service to him and will reward us, not because we deserve it, but because of his grace.

Video Discussion Q+A1) What is the Master hoping to find when he sends his servants to the vineyard?– He is hoping to find fruit. God is sending the prophets to see whether Israel was faithful to him.
2) Who do the hired tenants symbolize and what do they do to the servants that the Master sends?– The hired tenants symbolize Israel’s leaders. They take the servants (prophets) and they beat, stone, kill, and reject them all. Israel’s leaders rejected all those that God sent to warn them and call them back to repentance.
3) Who does the Master send last? What do the hired tenants do to him?– The Master finally sends his Son (Jesus). The hired tenants (Israel’s leaders), reject him and kill him also. The way they do this and the way they talk about the Son is similar to Joseph in Genesis and the outcome is similar too. The rejection of the Son brings about salvation and blessing for the world.
4) When did the leaders of Israel finally understand that this parable was about judgment on them?– When Jesus quoted Psalm 118 and Daniel 2. They realized Jesus was talking about them when Jesus was saying that he was the chief cornerstone. Jesus is the foundation that God is going to build his temple, and if you reject the cornerstone, you cannot become a part of the building (see 1 Peter 2:6-7, Eph 2:20). In other words, if you reject Jesus, you reject God.
5) Who is the kingdom given to and what does this mean for you and me?– The kingdom of God and its mission is given to the church. It is given to both Jews and Gentiles who place their faith and trust in Jesus as their King. They are the ones that bear fruit and show that they belong to God by how they love and obey Jesus. This means that when we come to Jesus in trust and faith, we become a part of his people. We are to show that we belong to him by how we live and bear fruit that shows that we know him. This doesn’t earn us our salvation, but instead shows that we truly have it. Praise God in his amazing plan that the rejection of Jesus by the Jewish Leaders means salvation goes out to the entire world (Romans 11:11).

Video Discussion Q+A1) Why does Jesus tell his disciples to go find a colt for him to ride into Jerusalem? What would this show the people?– Jesus tells the disciples this in order to fulfill what the prophet Zechariah had said for how the Messiah would come. This would show the people that Jesus was coming humbly. It was proof that he was the messiah.
2) What did many in the crowd do when Jesus made his way towards Jerusalem? Why did they do these things?– They spread their clothes on the ground, waved palm branches, and shouted “Hosanna”! They did these things to signify they welcomed Jesus as King, they wanted to accept him, they believed he was coming to be victorious for them, and save them from their enemies. In a way, this was true, but not in the way many of them thought.
3) How did the city of Jerusalem respond to the cries of the crowd?– They were stirred up and wondering what all the commotion was! Some people did not know that it was Jesus, some did not even know who Jesus was, and some knew who he was but did not want to believe. There were many different responses to the King of Jerusalem coming into his city.
4) What does Luke tell us how Jesus responded when he saw the city of Jerusalem? How is this like and unlike David? – Luke says that Jesus wept over Jerusalem because they did not realize the King was here. They would soon reject their king as a part of God’s plan to bring salvation, but still, Jesus had come to his own people and they did not receive him or his message (John 1:12-14). David wept when he went in the opposite direction over the Mount of Olives (2 Samuel 15:30), but this was because of God’s justice over David’s own sin. Jesus was coming over the Mount of Olives to enter Jerusalem to receive the penalty for the sins of his people. He is the better and greater Davidic king who can save his people.
5) What does this mean for how we respond to Jesus?– Do we want Jesus for what we want him for, or do we want Jesus for who he truly is? Many of the crowds wanted Jesus to defeat their enemies and wanted him for what he could do for them. When we come to Jesus, he is the true King and we must submit ourselves fully to him and what he wants. Jesus is the true King from the line of David who is to be followed with our whole heart. May we give him all of our hearts to follow and trust in him!

Video Discussion Q+A1) How much does the Master of the House agree to pay his first workers he hired? Do they agree to it?– The master of the house and the hired workers agreed to one denarius for the day’s work. This was a normal wage for a hired worker.
2) How many times does the Master of the House go back for more workers? Does he tell them this time how much he will pay? What does he say instead?– The Master of the House goes back 4 times and hires more workers each time. This time he says “whatever is right, I will pay” and so the workers who go out have to trust in the integrity of the Master. They have to trust that he will do what is right.
3) Why did the workers who were hired first think they would get more than what the Master of the House first said? What was their response when they saw the Master being generous with the last hired workers?– They saw the workers that were hired with one hour left in the day get paid a full day’s wage. They thought that since those people who only worked one hour got paid so much, that they should get more. They saw the generosity of the Master of the House and thought that because of his generosity to others, that they deserved more.
4) What lesson is Jesus trying to teach his disciples about the kingdom of heaven and their rewards for following him?– Jesus is teaching his disciples to not wonder about comparing heavenly rewards or if they will be rewarded by leaving everything to follow Jesus. Jesus does say that they will recieve rewards for following him. However, they need not be concerned with what others get, or if rewards will be fair, or if they are going to not receive back what they have lost. Jesus told them they would receive 100x and receive eternal life! No one deserves eternal life. Its only by God’s mercy. They should be so grateful they have been hired in the first place. So, the disciples should realize that to be first in God’s kingdom is to be the servant of all and follow in the footsteps of Jesus (Mark 9:35), and it is only by God’s mercy to them that they are a part of this kingdom.
5) What does this mean for you and me?– God has been so generous to save us. He has shown us mercy and given us faith to believe. When we receive such mercy and grace, we aren’t concerned when others receive mercy and grace from him. We should be so thankful when we see God bless and reward others. It is for our joy as well. Is Jesus really worth giving up anything to follow him? YES! Not because of the rewards, but because he is the reward. To be with Jesus is to have eternal life and we will be rewarded abundantly.

Video Discussion Q+A1) What question did the Rich Young Ruler ask Jesus? Was this a good question or not? Teacher, what good deed must I do to inherit eternal life? This is a good question in some ways because he’s coming to Jesus to ask this question. He’s asking him about eternal life. But, he’s asking Jesus what good deed he must do. He believes gaining eternal life comes by doing instead of believing.
2) What does Jesus say the Rich Young Ruler has to do to be perfect (and therefore, enter heaven)? Jesus tells him that he must go and sell everything he has and come and follow Jesus. Jesus invites him to become a disciple. This doesn’t mean every person has to give up everything he has, but Jesus is teaching us about this man’s heart. This man loved his possessions more than he wanted to follow Jesus.
3) What is Jesus pointing to when he says it’s easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter God’s Kingdom? Jesus is teaching the disciples that what is impossible with men, is possible with God. God can change and transform any heart, but to enter God’s kingdom, one must be willing to give up anything to come and follow Jesus. God is the one by the power of the Holy Spirit who can do this.
4) What does Jesus promise to the disciples? Jesus promises that they will reign with him in the new world and they will get 100 times more back than what they gave up to follow him. It may have felt to them that they had given up a lot to come follow Jesus, but it would be nothing in comparison to what they would gain. This takes faith, and it takes trust in who Jesus is and what he has done.
5) What does this story mean for us as we follow Jesus? This story teaches us that we can never earn our way to God, and we must be willing to give up anything to follow him. If we love something or someone more than Jesus, we truly don’t love Jesus. God says that we should have no other gods before him. So, if we would be a true disciple of Jesus, we must deny ourselves and follow him. Jesus promises he is worth it.

Video Discussion Q+A###### 1) What did Peter, James, and John see when Jesus revealed his glory to them? How does Matthew describe Jesus?
– They saw the glory of Jesus that he hid in his incarnation. They got a glimpse behind the curtain, so to speak, of the glory of God revealed in Jesus the Son. Matthew says Jesus shown like the Sun in its full strength and his clothes became white as light.
2) Who appeared alongside Jesus? Why?
– Moses and Elijah. This was the testimony of two-three witnesses confirming Jesus is who he says he is, and the Law (Moses) and the prophets (Elijah) point to Jesus.
3) What did Peter want to do for Jesus? Why?
– Peter perhaps wanted to make a tent, or a place for Jesus and Moses and Elijah to dwell, so the glory could stay with them or as a memorial to what had happened.
4) What made the disciples so afraid?
– It was not Jesus being transfixed before them that they were afraid, but when the voice from heaven declared who Jesus was, and it was the same words as his baptism, they were filled with fear.
5) When the vision ended, what did Jesus say to the disciples?
– Jesus told them not to tell anyone about the vision until after he had risen from the dead.
6) What does the vision of Jesus to the 3 disciples have to do with you and me?
– They give us great confidence in who Jesus is. They show us that he is who he said he was. They show us that the glory of God is revealed in the person of Jesus. Paul says the fullness of deity dwells in bodily form in Christ. It confirms the truth of what Jesus claimed, it strengthened the faith of the disciples, and it strengthens our faith as well. It shows us that Jesus is committed to revealing the Father to us, and for us to behold him with unveiled face (2 Cor 3:18) until we see his whole and full glory when he returns.

It will be built on the Rock. Ephesians 2:20 says Jesus started building his church on the foundation of the apostles and prophets. He promises that the Gates of Hell won’t be able to stand against it. Jesus will give the keys to the kingdom to his apostles, meaning he will give them spiritual authority that is reflected in heaven.

Jesus tells his disciples to not tell anyone yet because Jesus was teaching his disciples about the cost of being a disciple of Jesus. To follow Jesus means that you must come to him on his terms, not your own.

Jesus is going to fulfill his mission by going to Jerusalem to be rejected, crucified, buried, and 3 days later be raised from the dead. Jesus calls Peter Satan because Peter is acting like he’s doing what Satan tempted Jesus to do back in Matthew 4, to skip the cross for the crown.

How does Jesus call us to follow him? How does that reflect his own journey?

Jesus calls us to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow after him. Jesus obeyed his Father’s will, and denied himself. He took up his cross and carried it to where he would be crucified, died, was buried, and then raised to life. This is the path we must follow initially, and every day as a follower of Jesus. (See Galatians 2:20, Romans 6:4-6).

They came from the East, most likely Babylon. They possibly knew about the promised King from the influence of Daniel and other Jews who were also a part of the wise men from several hundred years earlier.

Herod was very troubled and upset because he saw this new king as a threat to his own kingdom. He should have responded by wanting to go with the wise men and to bow down before Jesus too. Jesus was the King that he should have been waiting for in order to welcome with his whole heart.

Where did the Chief Priests and Scribes tell Herod the Messiah would be born? Why Bethlehem? What does this teach us about God?

They told him the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2). Bethlehem was the place where King David was born. The Bible is showing us that Jesus is the King from David’s Line and a King after God’s own heart. He is the right King that God chose. God was faithful down to every detail of his promises. He had the power and the faithfulness to bring about every promise he made. God never breaks his promises.

The wise men brought Jesus gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Gold showed that Jesus had come as a king. Frankincense showed that Jesus had come to be a priest to mediate for his people. Myrrh showed Jesus had come to die as a sacrifice for us.

The end of the year is a wonderful time for us to ponder the issue of stewardship. What unique perspective followers of Jesus can have: humbly trusting God with outcomes, even as we faithfully work where he has us. While this past year’s vote on building funds redirected us back to a season of prayer and consideration over how to best steward all God entrusts to us, it’s a joy to continue working to wisely steward resources to support ongoing ministry.
God has supplied us with a number of talented and sacrificial team members willing to serve—including, amongst others, our facilities manager, Jason Schrepfer, who happens to have experience in a number of relevant areas. Individuals like these have provided us with an opportunity to make a number of low-cost high-impact updates to our facilities. In November we shared plans towards this end.
Below is more explanation of some of the specific changes you can anticipate, as well as some of the desired practical and spiritual outcomes behind them; grouped according to three areas: in the foyer, in the sanctuary, and by the roadside.
Foyer Area UpdatesBack to Top"Following Jesus Together" SignThis sign is designed to prominently express our Christ-exalting purpose as everyone enters our main entrance for unity and clarity.Wood Cladding and Wallpapering of ColumnsThe wood is designed to protect the columns from chipping and obvious wear as well as create more of a warm, home-like feel to all who enter the main lobby that is intended to encourage informal conversations among the congregation and a greater sense of relaxed welcome to all.Café Wall RefinishThe refinished wall is also designed to create a warm, home-like invitation to enjoy Connection Café and savor the blessing of fellowship.Removal of the Lounge Fireplace / Prayer Room WallBack to TopThis is a significant change that includes several design intentions related to the wisdom of how the space might be most effectively used.
While the wall has provided a room for some prayer and special events, it has also been an unintentional barrier that limits current space and use. The removal of this wall is designed to allow for:
- More frequent use of this strategic space by more people on a regular basis.
- Increased capacity and flexibility in how this space is used for fellowship and ministries like funerals, weddings, Bible studies, socials, training events, and evangelistic outreaches.
- Broadened experience by many of the wonder of God’s glory displayed through the flowers, the field, the lake, the sky, and sun by bringing a warmth to the space where we gather for fellowship each Sunday. The current wall obscures one of the most wonderful views of God’s creation that we have on our property.
The intention is not to decrease prayer. In fact, we hope the church family has actually experienced an expansion of the prayer ministry as volunteers have permeated the foyer area and utilized a number of gathering rooms in the building. The intent is that this expansion would continue the permeation of prayer and fellowship in our midst.
Additional Children's FeaturesAn area of children’s interest is planned for the new corner by the windows designed to capture their imagination, communicate to them, “You are valuable to us and to God” and provide a place that draws them together in relationship in a space within parental eyesight that encourages parents to stay around and fellowshipNew Welcome TableThe new table is designed to help faithful servants of our welcome ministry joyfully and effectively communicate to new guests, “You are important to us. We want to get to know you.”Sanctuary Area UpdatesBack to TopRemove select seats to add aislesThe removal of the seats is designed to make it easier for our church family to utilize the space that God has provided by removing a sense of “crowdedness” while at the same time making more of our seats accessible; especially those in the middle of our aisles. Possible Rear Hall Wall FinishThe team is considering possible rear hall wall finish ideas that could be used by members to share prayer requests on the walls to provide more relational warmth than our current bare walls do.Roadside UpdateBack to TopReplacement of current outdoor sign on Route 150 and new entrance sign to Bethany’s parking lotThe replacement sign on Route 150 is designed to better communicate our presence and identity as a church family that is following Jesus together to those who regularly drive by our church on this busy road.
The new sign is designed with a large legible lettering and internal lighting to increase our visibility in a way that captures attention and expresses eager hospitality to our community and guests.
Funding for the new signs is coming from memorial donations, not the general or vision fund. We are planning to have the new sign in place mid-January.
After the last congregational vote, the elders had a number of discussions with some members who were distressed by the proposed new sign. These concerns and discussions led to design changes for the 150 sign that replaced the website with the words “Following Jesus Together.”
We are thankful to be a family where members feel free to express every opinion openly. Please continue to express your opinions, share ideas, ask questions, and extend grace to one another over differences.
We realize that not everyone will agree upon the extent to which these kinds of changes will impact real ministry. Differences of opinion are going to occur in any healthy church family. Even so, we believe it is helpful for all to have a reasonable sense of clarity on some of the changes that are being made in an effort to more faithfully fulfill the ministry that Jesus entrusted us.
We pray that God will do a wonderful work in our midst in 2023 and the years to come.

FAQ'sBack to TopWhy invest in building updates like this?The church that Jesus promises to build is not merely a physical place, but a spiritual people (Mt 16:18; Eph 2:20-22; 1 Cor 3:9-17; 1 Pet 2:5). This is what he’s commanded his followers to be about: calling everyone to believe in his gospel, belong to his community, and become his disciple-makers (Mt 28:18-20). As such, any investments we make into material assets, whether now or in the future, should always serve to support and advance that glorious mission by equipping God’s people to do God’s work (Eph 4:11-16; Col 1:28-29; 1 Pet 4:9-11). While the primary way this is done is through the ministry of the word, we believe that these updates can serve practically to support God’s people doing the work of ministry (2 Chron 2:8-10; Ez 3:6-7; Hag 1:8; Acts 4:34-37).What kinds of opportunities are we hoping these investments will open up?We are prayerful that these kinds of investments will contribute towards directing the hearts of our community not inward, but upward, outward, and onwards—upward in worship of our Savior, outward in work for one another, onward in witness to our neighbors.How do these projects impact what we plan to do next?The projects are designed to be in alignment with any direction that we might choose in the near future.Are these updates a commitment to the entirety of the proposed projects of last year?No. While there is still intent to consider and propose next steps in terms of stewardship of the facility moving forward, these changes should be appropriate and be able to stand on their own as helpful means towards ministry faithfulness.Are there any dangers we are working to avoid?To be sure, any investment in material things can bring an amount of spiritual danger. Here are a few dangers we’re praying we can avoid as we strive towards faithful stewardship:
- Deception: Material wealth can easily become a cover-up for spiritual impoverishment (Rev 3:17-19). It is very tempting to trust physical resources to cause spiritual growth; but this is a clear danger we are to avoid (Psalm 20:7). God’s work always depends upon God’s Spirit (Ps 127:1-2). External beauty is not the same as true internal value (Prov 31:30; Lk 21:1-6). It is all too easy to begin to believe that superficial things matter more than supernatural ones (1 Sam 16:7; Dan 4:30-32).
- Discontentment: Contentment is a command for us to honor in times of little and times of much (Phil 4:12; 1 Tim 6:6-10). Thinking about our possessions, even as a church, can stir within us covetous desires we need to beware. Projects like these can tempt us to turn inward rather than upwards, outward, and onwards whereby we enjoy wealth enjoyed to the exclusion of those in need (Lk 16:19-25; Gal 2:10; Jas 5:9).
- Distraction: We don’t want the building to overshadow other opportunities like mission projects, local ministries, church partnerships, evangelistic outreach, community needs (Matt. 25:31-46; Jam 1:27); most of which are either built into our current budget or require more people to research. But it is important to note that our primary limitation and competition for resources in regard to ministry is generally related to people rather than finances (Mt 9:37-38).
- Division: Matters of wisdom and preference can often become a source of division. What one part of the body may believe is wise and helpful, another may be concerned about (Rom 14). It is possible that some initiatives can become unhelpful even though they may seem spiritual on the outside (Mk 12:38-44; 1 Cor 11:17-19). It is also possible to make accusations against extravagant worship as a waste of money, energy, & resources from a self-righteousness and selfish heart (Ez 4:1-5; Hag 1:7-9; Lk 10:39-40; Jn 12:3-8). It is important for us to prayerfully seek the Lord and extend grace and believe the best about one another and strive to do all things by faith (1 Cor 13; Eph 4:1-3; Rom 14). What kind of Scriptures give cause for investing in projects that do not seem ‘essential’?In one sense, almost no material resources are ‘essential’ to do ministry (1 Tim 6:6-8). But quite a wide variety of things can be helpful (Rom 16:1-2). Just like a home, a church facility is merely a tool to support the family members in expressions of love toward one another and toward their neighbors. Deciding what those helpful things are to faithful stewards takes wisdom, patience, prayer, & discussion amongst the various members of the church body; and ultimately comes about through the church’s generosity and excitement (Ex 35:21; Ez 1:5; Neh 2:12; 2 Cor 8:16; Tit 3:12-14).Shouldn’t the focus be on spiritual things rather than physical?While the primary emphasis of beauty, building, and workmanship is to be spiritual and internal in nature (Eccl 2:11; Lk 12:15-34; 1 Tim 2:9-10; 1 Tim 6:17-19; Tit 2:10; 1 Pet 3:3), this truth is not in conflict with God’s word which often implies that an internal worship often manifests & is celebrated in physical/externally ways (Gen 24:35; 26:12-14; Job 42:10-17; Ps 144:13-15; Prov 31:10-31). The wisdom and excellence with which we arrange even the material aspects of our lives often expresses more than we might think to the watching world (1 Kgs 10:1-9; Mt 5:16).How do these projects support where we believe God is calling us to invest?Any financial investments in a building are merely ways to try to equip God’s people with the best tools we can offer, to help our church family share ‘Jesus’ more (Acts 1:8; Col 4:2-6), take ‘together’ deeper (Rom 12:10; Col 4:2-6), and push ‘following’ forward (Acts 2:42; 20:20-21; 1 Thess 4:1-2; Tit 2:1-4; etc). The design team has worked hard to look for ways the facility could support the areas of desired growth, by developing ideas on how to cultivate an environment that emphasizes outreach, welcome, and discipleship as described above (Ex 31:1-6; 2 Chron 34:8-14). Ministry in this facility by a variety of groups over the last 12 years has helped us learn a number of ways we could design our spaces to be more helpful to members and hospitable to guests in spaces that deal with traffic flow, wayfinding, children’s areas, stage focus, seating arrangements, furniture comfort, cafe efficiency, sanctuary access, and more.How can we as the congregation be a part of the projects more than just financially?God’s work depends on the generosity of God’s people, both financially, and practically (Ex 35:29; 2 Cor 9). There may be opportunities for Bethany members to participate in some elements of the interior projects.Are there any ministry ideas or opportunities beyond facility projects for our church family to invest in and pray for?Absolutely. In fact, the bulk of our ministry efforts and prayers do not relate to the facility. We do not view investment in the building as an either/or, but a both/and. We hope to communicate many of these ideas and prayers over the coming months and years. Several of these areas include: evangelism efforts and training, mission projects, compassion initiatives, community group development, outreach events, discipleship relationships and training, and more. Again, the most frequent limitations we face are not typically funding, but the need for committed and skilled leaders able to carry initiatives through to completion.
May God continue to help our church family follow Jesus together as we call everyone to believe in his gospel, belong to his community, and become his disciple-makers.

We need to know that Jesus is the right king. We need to know that Jesus is from the promised line. Matthew names Abraham and David because these men were given promises and God made a covenant with both of them. God was going to send a Messiah from their lines who would be the one who would fulfill all the promises God made.

Which women does Matthew include in Jesus’s Genealogy? Why does Matthew include them? What 2 main reasons?

He includes Tamar (Gen 38), Rahab (Josh 2), Ruth, and Bathsheba (2 Sam 11-12). Each of these women (except for Tamar) were not Israelites and they were involved in a situation where there was a possible sandal. Matthew lists them because it shows that Jesus has come to be the savior of all the nations and to save all kinds of people.

Why was Jesus’ birth surrounded with sandal? What would you have thought if you found out Mary was pregnant before getting married?

People found out that Mary had a baby coming before she was married to Joseph. This was not the way that God designed in the beginning when he created man and woman.

What was the Angel’s message to Joseph? What did he tell Joseph was going to happen, what he should call the child, and what the child was going to do?

The angel told Joseph to take Mary as his wife and to not divorce her. The angel said the baby was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit. This was a miraculous birth. Joseph was to call the baby Jesus, which means, Yahweh saves. Jesus came to save people, not from the power of the Romans, but to be saved from their sins.

What does the name Emmanuel mean? How does this show that there is no one like Jesus?

The name Emmanuel means ‘God with Us’. If you read John 1:14, and Colossians 1:19, The Bible tells us that God the Son came to this earth and his full presence lived among us. There is no one like Jesus. Jesus was fully God and fully man living with us in one person. He is the promised Messiah! Praise God that he was faithful to all of his covenants, his promises, and his people!

Video Discussion Q+A1) How long were the disciples at sea? Why?
- They were fighting the wind and the waves for at least 8 hours, maybe more. They were 3-4 miles from any shore and were in the 4th watch of the night (between 3-6am).
2) When the disciples saw Jesus walking on the water, what did they think?
- They thought Jesus was a ghost. They did not realize the message about the loaves (Mark 6:52), that Jesus was Yahweh. This miracle will leave no doubt as to who Jesus was.
3) What did Jesus say when his disciples were afraid? Who walks on the water in the Old Testament?
- Jesus said “take heart, it is I, do not be afraid”. The part, “It is I”, are the same words as the Greek Old Testament (called the Septuagent) as Exodus 3 “I am”. The only one who walks on water in the Old Testament is Yahweh (See Job 9:8, Psalm 89:9, Psalm 107:29).
4) When Peter came out onto the water to meet Jesus, why did he start sinking?
- Peter walked on the water by Jesus’s power. This was going to prove the disciples would do the same kind of miracles by the power of the Holy Spirit. He started sinking when he started being afraid of the wind and waves and doubting he was safe. He started sinking when he took his eyes off of Jesus (see John 15:4-5).
5) What did the disciples say when the wind stopped as soon as Jesus and Peter got back into the boat?
- They realized what the previous miracle was trying to show them: that Jesus is the son of God.
6) What does this mean for you and me?
- It shows that Jesus truly is the Son of God. It shows that those who are truly his children are never forsaken by him, and will never endure a trial or test without his presence. Everything the Lord does to build up and strengthen our faith is done out of love for us. We may not see how he is working, or where he might be, but we know that he will care for us and will be with us no matter what we go through.

Video Discussion Q+A1) Why was Jesus wanting to be by himself? What did he do when he saw the crowds follow him?
– He had just found out news of his cousin’s death at the hands of Herod. He wanted to be by himself. However, the crowds made their way around the Sea of Galilee and showed up to the side of the lake while he was still in the boat. Once he landed, instead of brushing them away, the Bible says he had compassion on them and healed those who were sick.
2) Why did Jesus tell his own disciples to feed the crowds when he knew they couldn’t?
– Jesus was using this as a test for them. Would they see the feeding of the crowds through only human means, or would they remember who was with them? Jesus was using this miracle to show them more of who he was.
3) What did Jesus tell the crowds to do instead of leaving to find food?
– He told them to sit down on the grass. Here we have Israelites, sitting down in the grass in a desolate place (or wilderness you could say), and he is about to miraculously provide heavenly food for them all.
4) How much food did the disciples give to Jesus? After the miracles, how much was left over?
– They gave him 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread. That’s it. Once Jesus did the miracle though, there were 12 baskets filled with leftovers after everyone at how much ever they wanted.
5) What is this amazing miracle meant to show us about who Jesus is?
– This miracle is meant to show us that Jesus is the true Shepherd of his people. He is the one from Psalm 23 who makes them lie down in green pastures. He is the one who provides for them in the wilderness, just like he did in Exodus 16 with Manna and Quail. He is the Good Shepherd who will provide for his sheep (John 10, Ezekiel 34).
6) How do the people respond to Jesus in John 6 after this miracle?
– John tells us that when Jesus had done the miracle, they were about to come and make him king by force. However, they wanted to make him king because they ate their fill, not because they wanted to submit to him. THey wanted to use Jesus for their own purposes, not submit to him as Lord and to what his plan was. They even called him the Prophet (Deut 18), but they wanted Jesus for what Jesus could do for them.

Today was the last day of the English camp. Even though we had expected a smaller attendance, today’s attendance was not much different from yesterday’s with a total of 74 kids. It has been an amazing week. The kids had a lot of fun playing games, doing crafts, and learning English. Today was Day 4 of English Camp here in Mexico City. We started the day with a lot of preparation for the day. Between sorting and distributing all types of beans for our bean art craft to inflating and tying balloons for our balloon stomp game, we had plenty of opportunities to bond and connect as a team. Throughout our stay in Mexico City the weather has been very delightful. The high temperatures have been in the upper 70’s and lows in the mid 50’s. Daytime has generally been very nice sometimes with a few showers here and there. On Tuesday evening while the whole team was at Sam and Jamie Hornbrook’s house, some dark clouds rolled in. Tuesday was an exceptionally good day. Our attendance was more than double of what it was yesterday. Today we had approximately 60 children come for English camp. We were very delighted to see so many new faces. Praise the Lord for the amazing turnout! We also bear the good news that our young man who was feeling ill yesterday has almost made a full recovery. This was day 1 of English Camp at Iglesia Nueva Vida En Cristo. Until recently we were expecting the children to be out of school and to have only one session daily. Because of Covid-19 disruption, the government extended the school year and we are providing 2 sessions, one in the morning for children that have school in the afternoon and the other in the afternoon for those who were in school in the morning. On Saturday we were given the privilege of journeying around Mexico City and enriching ourselves in Mexican culture. We visited the National historical museum at Maximillian’s castle. There we learned a lot about Mexico’s amazing history. Later the same day we took a trip around Mexico city on a two story tour bus. Our team was introduced to the central parts of the city. The conference will include biblical preaching and practical training for parents and students on biblical manhood and womanhood. The event is free and child care will be provided for children 5th grade and younger.

College Care
We will be sending cards to our college students the first week of May letting them know that we are praying for them. We’d like to include $10 gift cards to various restaurants, coffee houses or stores. If you would like to

Thank You from Samaritan’s Purse
On behalf of Samaritan’s Purse, thank you for your partnership in the Gospel and generous gift toward the response in Ukraine. The needs in Ukraine are immense as there are now over four million refugees and seven million people internally displaced from the conflict. We are working in two primary ways:
-We are providing emergency medical care across Ukraine including a field hospital, clinics, and a mobile medical team.
-We are working closely with thousands of churches across the region to provide critical relief items including food.

This weekend we welcome GO Partners Tom and Barbara Ward. They have been GO Partners with Bethany since 1989 serving in Pakistan and most currently in England. Tom will be sharing during the second service and available to connect between and after services today.

Thank you to our generous Bethany church family! We collected 2100 pounds of non-perishable food during the Foodshare Canathon Drive that went to Peoria Rescue Ministries and food pantries at Salvation Army, Mount Zion Baptist Church, and Redeemer Lutheran Church.

Welcome Dave Beakley to the Pulpit | GO Partner to South Africa
Dave serves at Christ Seminary as the Academic Dean while pastoring at a local church in Polokwane, South Africa.
The Lord is growing the seminary, and the student body will soon be
comprised of more than 60 men representing 20% of Africa. There is a drought of God’s Word in Africa (Amos 8:11-12), but they are starting to see men who are equipped in expository preaching step out and change lives.
Dave & Carol are active in leading a home Bible study. David preaches about twice monthly at their local church while Carol teaches the women and children.
