Education Opens Doors is a college and career readiness organization focused on activating all students to determine and pursue an informed future. We do this by partnering with school districts to bring them a ready to go interactive curriculum that is plug and play for our teachers who implement it during the school day. We are deeply invested in the middle school space to provide students the opportunity to develop the necessary college and career skills for post-secondary success and their path to High School and beyond.
In today’s episode, we talk to Shawana Carter. She is the founder and executive director of Carter’s House, a 501(c3) that provides quality clothing to children and teens ages 0-18 living in homeless or hard-working, low-income families at a reduced cost in North Texas. She also is the parent to a middle school and high school student in Irving ISD. Shawana shares how she modifies the school day for her children, advice on how to advocate for your child with a 504 or IEP plan, and touches on the importance of life and soft skills.
Today we are joined by one of our former Education Opens Doors parent, Jennifer Escobar, mother of Bianca, who went through our program in the 6th and 8th grade while at D.A. Hulcy STEAM in Dallas ISD. She is now thriving as a 9th grader. Jennifer talks to us about creating intrinsic motivation in children, encouraging student self-exploration at home, and fostering meaningful learning experiences.
In this episode, we meet Kerri O. Ellison or as her friends know her Osha. Osha joins us today to remind us to have empathy for ourselves and others. As a parent of a middle school student in Cleburne ISD, Osha shares how she provides a learning experience at home, creates space for social and emotional learning, and what she hopes to see from online learning experiences for children.
