In this episode of City Update, we highlight a new exhibit at the Airborne and Special Operations Museum. “Opening the Vaults: Treasures of the Fort Liberty Museums.” showcases some of the rarest collection pieces from the Fort Liberty Museums, made up of the ASOM, 82nd Airborne Division War Memorial Museum, JKF Special Warfare Museum, and the U.S. Army Reserve Command History Office. Visitors will have a behind the scenes look at unique artifacts dating back to the American Civil War (1861-1865) to the present day used or captured by Soldiers on the battlefield, along with historical context. “Opening the Vaults” will be at the ASOM through December 29, 2024.
In this City Update, Megan Maxwell from the Museum of the Cape Fear talks about a special exhibit titled, "Seventeen Men: Portraits of the Men of the 25th US Colored Troops". Learn how the discovery of a tiny pocket-sized photo album led to a months-long research project for genealogist and artist Shayne Davidson, culminating in a series of 17 life sized portraits. The Seventeen Men were soldiers with the 25th US Colored Troops Co. G from 1864-1865. Each portrait is accompanied by a short biography of the man's life and a reproduced image of the original albumin print or tintype Davidson used to create the portrait.
During Black History month, the Fayetteville History Museum will have a special exhibit that highlights the history and future of the Orange Street School.In addition to this exhibit, the museum has several other exhibits that cover African American literature, African American builders and architects, and African Americans on the Cape Fear River.Museum hours are Tuesday - Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and admission is free.
Beginning in February, work sessions will be held at 2 p.m. on the first Monday of each month. The Annual PWC Grinding of the Greens takes place on Saturday, January 21st. Tree pickup will take place January 9-13 so have your tree by the road by the 6th. If you miss the tree pickup, you can drop your tree off at the Fayetteville community Garden at the corner of Vanstory and Mann Street off of Old Wilmington Hwy.
On November 14th, the City Council approved the adoption of the Social District ordinance for the creation of a temporary Downtown Social for 12 months, from December 2022 to December 2023, to operate seven days a week from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m., Monday to Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday.A social district allows people to drink beer, wine, or cocktails as they walk through a defined area of downtown Fayetteville. The City's Economic & Community Development department offers workshops designed for first-time homebuyers, Participants will gain an understanding of the entire home buying process, including budgeting for homeownership, shopping for a home, obtaining a mortgage, closing procedures, and the responsibilities of maintaining the home after purchase. The homebuyer workshops are conducted by Kingdom Community Development Corporation and are offered every fourth Saturday of the month at Fayetteville Technical Community College. Residents who participate have completed the pre-requisite for down payment assistance and may apply after selecting a lender, getting pre-approved for a mortgage, and finding a home.

The StoryWalk is a community project led by the Cumberland County Public Library and funded by a grant from the Women’s Giving Circle of Cumberland County, a fund of the Cumberland Community Foundation. This literacy-focused amenity encourages children, caregivers and their teachers to experience reading, participate in physical activity, and explore nature together.
The StoryWalk is a little over a mile and consists of each page of a picture book laminated and displayed along a walking trail so adult and child can read the entire book together. Updated throughout the year, families can read several stories. Picture book displays also feature early literacy and Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) activities along with movement exercises

Sled your city! The first ever, Sled-gra Event takes place at Segra Stadium on Janurary 24th. Kids of all ages are invited to come and enjoy the snow slides, games and activities. Tickets are $5 per person
