The team received email correspondence from GoodMaps with regards to Nimer’s demo late last year and we went through the GoodMaps emails and we look forward to having one of their representatives on an upcoming episode.
Marco reviewed and demonstrated a recommendation which he received from a fabulous new podcast called Podcasting 2.0. The app is PodFriend, an app which a number of listeners have been asking about on various email lists, which in its current early form allows you to listen to podcasts on Windows, MAC and Chromecast and runs us through how to install it on Windows 10 and shows us that it is very accessible but there is still a lot of room for improvement. We hope to get the developer of this app on to a future episode to talk more about its development and to chat about when it will be available on Android and iOS.

Kirt discusses getting Talkback back on Samsung devices running Android 11 and takes us through the process of how to get this done by using NVDA on a Windows PC and how to set things up to run smoothly on his Samsung device.
Kirt used This tutorial on xda developers to uninstall Samsung Talkback. For convenience, the specific commands for removing Samsung Talkback are listed below.
- Extract the developer tools to an easy location, plug your phone into a USB port on your computer, enable USB debugging in your phone developer options and grant your computer permission as directed by the XDA tutorial. If prompted make sure you change your connection from charging only to file transfer mode.
- Open the “platform tools” inside the ADB folder you extracted, press shift +f10 and you’ll either be able to run the command prompt or power shell. Either works.
- Launch the developer bridge.
- Command prompt: adb devices
- powershell: .\adb devices
- Open the adb shell:
- Command prompt: adb shell
- Powershell: .\adb shell
- Uninstall Samsung Talkback – He couldn’t get this to copy and paste in powershell so you may have to type this out:
- pm uninstall -k –user 0 com.samsung.android.accessibility.talkback
- If you get the “success” message, Samsung Talkback has been uninstalled. If your Talkback was on during the uninstall you may need to turn it off before stock Talkback shows up in your installed services. He used commentary screen reader for that part.

We welcomed Karthik from Envision back to the podcast to discuss updates related to Envision, as well as the release of the Envision Glasses.

In the main section of this week's podcast, we discussed different calendar apps, with the team suggesting that Google Calendar was our personal favourite. Marco went about demonstrating Google Calendar and we went through the different features that can be found in this app.
We also talked about Do Not Disturb and how this works on Android, due to a listener email from Dennis Long and explained that these days, Do Not Disturb works perfectly well and any previous issues found with this feature have been well and truly ironed out.
Nimer decided to run AI apps through their paces by seeing if they would recognize the label on his beer bottle. The winner overall was Lookout by Google.
Finally, Warren demonstrated his app of the week Speech Central, which is a voice reader. We will have more on this app next week, as we ran out of time to really put it through its paces.

Karthik, an app engineer who works on Envision AI, popped on to the podcast this week to speak about Envision AI on iOS and Android and the numerous plans afoot in order to continue delivering on what is a truly excellent product. He tells us what caused him to get interested in development, some challenges he has had whilst developing the software and what’s upcoming in future updates. We discussed some enhancements that we would like to see be brought to the app and we spoke of the impending release of the Envision Glasses. In this mid-week bonus episode of the ANATAD Podcast, Nimer, Warren and Marco got to unbox a couple of shiny new toys and what a fun and informative episode it turned out to be.
Warren kicked off the show by unboxing a Google Pixel 4awhich arrived at his residence earlier on in the day. The 4a is a mid-range phone recently released by Google priced at around $350 U.S.

Welcome to Episode 46 of ANATAD Podcast. Over the next few weeks, we will be comparing Android vs iPhone and seeing who comes out on top.
We started off this episode by thanking our podcast host Buzzsprout for the excellent work they have done on accessibility with their website. They have added headings on pages to help with navigation, added buttons to the tab order to easily be reached with the keyboard, and added keyboard shortcuts for items in the editor toolbar to help with editing each episode's show notes.
In the news this week:
- Google sent out an email this week alerting users to a change about how voice data for Google Assistant is being stored. To learn more or to change the setting, use this link.
- Android Beta 3 was released this past week, so the team discussed enhancements to accessibility in this third, and potentially final beta.
- Long-pressing on the record button in messaging apps works again.
- Moving apps by dragging, as well as accessing launcher shortcuts has been fixed.
- Badge counts on folders is now accurately reported.
- The Pixel 4A was released this week, and Warren has ordered it for demoing on a future episode of the cast.

Comparing Android with iPhone
During our main section this week, Nimer and Marco compared Android and iOS in a number of areas.
- We compared adjusting speech rate.
- We compared the phone app.
- We compared the messages app, and agreed that icons seem smaller, and thus harder to explore to on iOS.
- We discussed granularity adjustments, and the changes upcoming to granularity in Android 11.
- To cap it off, we discussed keyboards on both platforms and you may well be surprised with our findings.

A massive episode 45 has just hit your podcatcher and what an episode it was.

- Warren mentioned that Chromecast have finally sorted out their volume issues.
- A survey for Pixel fans has been circulated by email, and we discussed the validity of this.
- Biometrics of credit card data is rolling out from Google making it unnecessary to type in the CVC to auto-fill.
- Marco mentioned an article about Apple introducing the ability for iPhones to act as payment terminals.
- Finally, Nimer mentioned that backing up the storage of Android phones, a previous Google 1 feature, is now free, and is coming to iOS devices.
Rooting and Installing Roms
During the main section of the cast, we discussed:
- The difference between rooting and installing a ROM;
- How to go about learning how to root or install a ROM;
- Using XDA Forums as a resource for rooting and installing ROM's;
- We concluded with some side-effects of both rooting and installing a ROM.

- Rebooting phones and how often one should reboot.
- Modern batteries in smartphones, and how they don't require recalibration, as well as how to get the most life out of them.
- Security apps, and whether you should use one, and which one. Recommended was the Sophos Intercept X.

- Password managers.
- The password manager Marco uses and recommends is LastPass.
- Also, myki was briefly discussed.
- The value of cleaning of cache and program data. Apps we recommend for this include:
- device care on the Samsung device
- similar apps from LG and other manufacturers

- We also like these two apps for phone optimization and accessing hidden Android settings: Android Hidden Settings, and 3c All In One Toolbox.
Finally, we addressed two listener emails about weather apps, and Android manufacturer update policies.

Next, we discussed and demonstrated the Voicedream Reader, a great app for both low vision and blind users alike, as a result of a request from Debbie from Melbourne Australia.
We answered another question from David Mehler, from last week's podcast. He asked about which signal check apps we recommend. We recommend both SignalCheck Pro, and NetMonster.
