PART 2: PRACTICE MANAGEMENT AND PLAYER DEVELOPMENT

Not getting players enough repetitions - Repetition is key for skills development. Coaches need to structure practices so players get the maximum amount of quality reps, especially with the key skills, while avoiding any unnecessary safety risks.

No plan for practices - Practices need structure with a plan to maximize time on skill-building. Unplanned practices waste time and will likely miss opportunities in important areas.
-
Not adapting to attention spans - Younger players have short attention spans. We must avoid excessively long and stale activities, drills, and speeches.
-
Ignoring struggling players - Take time to give extra instruction to players who are struggling with a skill. Don't just focus on the best kids. Keep a simple roster checklist to track your allocation of coaching pointers.

Not having a backup plan - Coaches should always have a backup plan for drills/activities/practices in case something is not working well or there are issues with equipment, weather, the field, etc.

The following sums up just how good a hitter Gary Sheffield was… in his career he had 300 more walks than strikeouts, while hitting 450+ 2Bs and 500+ HRs. This is an author and a book that discusses the biggest game-changer in life, and when the information is applied consistently you’ll optimize yourself as a person, player, coach, etc. Interestingly enough I came across this book after first deeply studying the ‘Zen Master’ himself, Phil Jackson. PART #2: We analyze the value of ‘pitch framing’ moving forward. We discuss how this skill will likely soon become useless at the pro level, and how that should affect the allocation of ‘framing training’ time for amateur/youth players. PART #3: We cover the most useful defensive tip for first basemen. This technique will help to prevent more runs than anything else the first baseman can do defensively, and it’s interesting that very few first basemen are taught it.

EPISODE #4 In this episode, we’ll discuss why the pitcher’s foundation is directly responsible for the vast majority of a pitcher’s success. In a baseball world full of arm-care, and arm-strength talk, it’s the legs, hips, and even the torso that have the largest impact on a pitcher’s success and arm-health.
