‘We are all called to live a life of humility, but what that looks like will be different for each of us. Some don’t need to intentionally take the lowest seat as that is where society puts them anyway, others of us need to consider relinquishing our place, in order that others can be lifted up.’

God walks with you… Jesus is the carpenter from Nazareth but also eternally of the same essence as the Father – one in whom Light of life, the truth of God and the very being of God resides.’

Deep places are where we ask those hard questions. We don’t have to go into the deep water, we can stay in the shallows, in the places that feel safe and easy. Where we know where we are, and our feet are firmly on the ground. Jesus invites us to the deep however, he knows that it is when we take the risk of going into the unknown that we can grow. That we can learn of the abundance that God has for us, if we can learn to trust him to hold us up, even when we can’t stand for ourselves.
‘We’re called to be loving and to serve others, but it doesn’t mean we always meekly do as we’re told or conform to other kinds of peer pressure. With grace and inner strength, Christians must remain obedient to their calling and to their convictions.’
This truth is our story, and it is our song. That this joy comes from the Lord. It is not tied to our circumstances but to God's unchanging character. It’s a joy that strengthens us in the most challenging times, and here is the Good news no matter what we face, “The joy of the Lord is our strength.”
Sermon given during the week of prayer for Christian Unity. ‘There is only one Church! It is vital that, despite our diversity, Christians learn to act as one Church in obedience to the heart’s desire of Christ. AND so that the world may believe!’
Christians must persist fervently in prayer - they are to keep at it! This isn’t easy.It takes great effort and requires discipline, but once nurtured, it becomes a powerhouse - a key to fruitful Christian living.

Sermon given on Remembrance Sunday 2024.‘Love is a verb, which should drive us from our security to help make peace and safety for others. This is our high calling – to put love into action. Just as Jesus did for us.’
'The real effectiveness and deep impact of the Christian gospel on society in England back in the 18th century wasn’t due entirely to Whitefield and Wesley and their friends; in very large measure it was due to the hundreds of ordinary people who gave themselves to “noticing and nurturing” tiny groups of people and helping them to experience and grow in the love of Jesus.'
When a person turns away from Christ, they take grief, dissatisfaction, and sadness with them. But there is a way to find true joy, and that is to trust and obey God God’s word. When we seek first the kingdom of God all the things money cannot buy shall be credited to our account.

Jesus offers to each of us his broken body. We don’t always understand all the pieces, or how they fit together, but if we follow the crumbs from the bread of life then we will be made whole and receive life in all its fullness, and have a path to life everlasting.
‘As we start this new Methodist year, I urge you to do business with God, through honest self-evaluation before we throw ourselves into another round of meetings; before me make important decisions; and certainly, before we plan for the future!’
‘Every day, we face the choice between following Christ or the world, with various influences pulling us in different directions. Our faith requires daily decisions to follow God's call, or go our own way. Remember, God chose you first. Will you choose Him.’
'The human race, now, is still as empty and hungry as it was when Jesus shared our life on earth and when He was moved with a compassion by a hungry crowd – not just hungry for bread and fishes or hungry for knowledge but hungry for wisdom. Jesus is still the best teacher we’ve got!'
'As a church I believe we have pastoral calling, to build the church, a prophetic calling to speak truth to power. And to feed the people in God’s name spiritually and practically and in the power of the Holy Spirit.'
‘Learning to eliminate hurry can help us re-discover the life of love, joy, and peace that Jesus wants for us.’
God has promised us his abiding presence on this journey. Even in the storms of life. He has promised us his peace that passes all understanding…. peace the world cannot give. Peace that cannot be purchased on or offline. Most importantly, we have the reward of his promised eternal life.
Today the invitation from God is to know that it is in our weakness that we are made strong, for it is then that God is at work most powerfully in our lives, for ourselves and for others to see. So, delight in your weakness, boast in it even, for God will use our places of brokenness to shine powerfully in the world.
Do we trust in a God who is true, faithful, and just; do we believe in a Creator who’s seeking to redeem what has been made? Do we trust in a loving God whose nature is to rescue from the grip of sinand enable hope and new life through his son, Jesus the saviour of the world?
Let us trust in the Lord, who commands the winds and the waves, and find our peace in Him, no matter what storms we face.
'There is no gospel in which Jesus remains buried in the ground like a dormant seed. Like Jesus rose from the tomb, the kingdom of God will always burst forth, bringing light, laughter and life.'

‘Every person in this world is loved by God unconditionally. Our Maker longs for us to turn towards his love. All who feel drawn to pray, I believe is experiencing the prevenient grace of God and the Holy Spirit is at work.’
‘Does God still bring people together at certain times and for certain purposes? I have no doubt in answering with complete conviction; “Yes, He does”…If Jesus Christ is the vine and we are the branches, then we are in a living and dynamic relationship with Him – and with each other! And it is God makes our relationships fruitful.’
‘If this morning you are feeling hopeless about any situation, you are in the right place. Put that situation into God’s hands in prayer. And hear the words of Jesus speaking to you this morning, saying, “trust me,” I am the Good Shepherd, and I am here to make all things new.’
‘If we want society to change, we need to SEE the need; FEEL the need and be MOVED to respond in some way. What’s more, those who we’re moved to help, must be open to receive it.’
The resurrection sometimes feels too good to be true; sometimes fear, doubt, and grief can overwhelm us; sometimes ‘hope’ and ‘promise’ are harder to bear than ‘fear’ and ‘despair’. Yet, if we look into the tomb, there’s nothing there, but if we sincerely look for the Jesus, We WILL find him risen!
'We see Jesus – whoever we are and whatever century of history we live in – we see Jesus most clearly when we come close to the cross, which is what we are invited to do as we move on through this Passiontide and into Holy Week.'
‘Let us recognise, and never underestimate, the power of love, prayer, nurture, faithfulness, and obedience in parenthood. Not only upon the life of the individual, but upon our families, communities and even the world.’
'It is my hope that this passage from the Gospel of John may inspire us to copy Jesus' example of cleansing our temple physically as well as our bodies, the living temple.'
'This Lent I pray that we will all choose to walk the path of discipleship, that we will choose to follow Jesus, even knowing that the way won’t be easy. We will have to carry our crosses. But as we walk, we do so with our eyes looking ahead to the cross, and beyond to a tomb that stands empty.'

It’s the story of a God who sends messenger after messenger saying: “You are my people; I love you. Stop living so selfishly. Turn back to me and find life – instead of death and destruction. And, after a plethora of messengers, God sent His Son – Jesus Christ – to mend that relationship by giving His life.’

‘In our modern world, we’re bombarded by negatives every day, but the trick is learning to break the cycle of negativity. Handing our worries to the Lord and trusting him a little more than we tend to do.’
‘God is able to heal, Hebrews 13 tells us that he is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He can mend what is broken, soothe what is hurting, and restore what has been lost.’

‘We are called to walk the path of forgiveness, over and over again, without keeping count…it will transform our lives and the lives of those around us, if we can choose to follow the way that Jesus has walked before us.’

‘The kingdom of God comes to us already perfect. We cannot improve it in any way, or make it more valuable than it is.’
‘If we build society without reference to God’s plumb line or the spirit level, we court disaster… If it’s moral, it’s right; If it’s immoral, it’s wrong. And a bible, that contains the plumb line, and the spirit level can be bought for less than a fiver!’
‘When pride, and selfish desire for prominence instead of humility reign among Christians, then there is bound to be conflict and division which leaves us with fractured relationships, wounded egos and disunity, between brothers and sisters.’
‘Keep the faith if you are hurting, and when don’t understand what’s going on; keep praying, even when you feel like giving up; for those earnestly seek him and who trust the Lord, will, in time, experience his faithfulness and his steadfast love.’
'It is only when our relationship with God is set right that a person can experience true inner peace and true spiritual security that the schemes of the devil cannot touch.'
‘When we live together in the way described in Romans 19, putting the needs of the other above our own, it is then that we will be able to bear fruit in the world. It is then that others will look at us and see something of the Divine in us. It is then that we will be light and salt in the world – illuminating the dark places and bringing life and joy.’
God’s nature must shape our faith. If it doesn’t, and we’re not living by divine (‘hesed’) values, we won’t find God in our worship, or know his blessing.

'Let’s re-commit ourselves to joining in the divine dance, to learning who God is, and who we are therefore called to be. Seeking to care more for God’s amazing creation we have been given to look after, and most of all let’s go into all the world, proclaiming the good news of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen'
On the day of Pentecost, the outward-looking, and loving God was revealed. Pursuing humanity in love.
When our Lord had achieved His great victory through the cross and was taken up into heaven, he responded by giving gifts. And the recipients of those gifts were some of the people who had let Him down – like Simon Peter, and people who had persecuted him – like the apostle Paul, formerly Saul of Tarsus.Jesus Christ is our very gracious king; and He has set a pattern of our way of living.
‘Being a relevant church isn’t just about enabling the world to look in and listen, it’s how we take seriously what’s happening out in the world. John Wesley was outward-looking desperate to get the message out where people are, and to be relevant to their needs. Mission starts with looking and listening!’

‘For many Christians, the coronation of King Charles III is a powerful reminder of God’s sovereignty and the Biblical call to pray for our leaders, who, though called to a particular task, are ordinary people underneath it all.’
There is a danger to the notion of abundant living – that the measure of God’s blessing is seen in my wealth, my health, my status and my position in life – reduced to what is called the health and wealth doctrine – it is in contradistinction to Jesus’ sermon on the Mount, his demeanour in life and teaching.
‘There is no direction that is so wrong that Jesus can’t help us to turn back. Jesus meets us where we are and is revealed to us in the everyday things of life – in having our names known and, in a meal shared with friends. Whether your heart is filled with joy, or despair today, know that Jesus is alongside you, wanting to hear your story, wanting to share in your story with you.’

As our Lenten journey nears its climax on Good Friday, we are reminded that we are not called to be people that remain in the valley of dry bones, in places of death. We are called to be Easter people, people of resurrection and new life. People filled with hopes and dreams. People called to journey with Jesus, to go forward, through death and into new life.
Beware that you don’t let the darkness of fear compromise you, the truth is the truth. We mustn’t be worried about what people think of or what other believers may think of us, what matters is what GOD thinks of us.

Friends, whatever we put into the hands of Jesus. Whatever we bring to Jesus, no matter how broken, He takes it, and when he gives it back, is never the same. An example of this is the transformation he has made in our lives. Once we were lost in sin, now we are found.

When we feel we are inadequate for God's call, that is a good sign, because depending on God will become our only option.
The crowd sought to cancel Jesus.Eventually, they thought they’d cancelled him forever when they hung him upon the Cross, but he gloriously rose again and walked away.
But Jesus is in the ‘forgiving business’, and has the habit off seeking the lost and only walking away, when necessary - always with a forgiving and patient heart.
As disciples and servants of God, perhaps Jesus is asking us to fill the empty jars in our lives right up to the brim with love…. fill it with his word, fill it with the Holy Spirit…a symbol of water.……fill it with the right attitude towards one another……and set the stage for a miracle.

The Covenant Service at the beginning of a new year, is set in the context of Holy Communion. Remember God’s grace and forgiveness in Christ, Remember he will sustain you for the journey ahead. Remember his faithfulness to you, which can inspire our faithfulness in return.

May we not think of those who have died as ‘lost’. Lost to us, maybe. But may we recall Jesus’s words, ‘No one has greater love than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.’ Such sacrifice, I believe, is not lost to God
Our gospel reading today is an encouragement to give all that we have for God, what that looks like will be different for each person. It will though, for each and every one of us, require active decision making. We need to take time to think about how we are using what we have and who we are; to pray about it and not just to operate on automatic-pilot, most of all to trust God.
Today COP26 starts...a time when world leaders will be meeting to make commitments that might save the planet from its erratic weather patterns. To love God, His creation and our neighbours is to get involved, make your voice heard and pray for COP26.
This passage gives us a certain perspective on our link to possessions. Calls us to be ready to leap at the opportunity to respond to God’s call. Invites us to abandon whatever holds us back from following in the way. Challenges us to seek to ‘see’ God’s mercy and grace
Over generations when we have thought a situation impossible God has shown us – impossible is nothing
Let us love one another in such a way that there’s ‘no night out’, for those who are dreading the prospect of rough sleeping.
True riches come from the acts of faith that recognise the truth about the Lord’s identity—that He has given us all good things, both earthly and eternal, physical and spiritual. Those acts of faith include the offerings that we present to help meet other’s needs, as well as those monetary gifts that we bring. This Harvest Festival I pray that we will remember and recognise the Lord’s provision to us.

We are a fellowship of God’s people not for its own sake, but for the good of all people.
Sir Robert William Perks, 1st Baronet (24 April 1849 – 30 November 1934) was a British Liberal politician.
He was the son of George Thomas Perks (1819 – 1877), a Wesleyan Methodist preacher. He was educated at Kingswood School and at King's College London (1867–71). He then qualified as a solicitor, and became a partner of Henry Fowler, 1st Viscount Wolverhampton.[1]
In 1898, Perks proposed the creation of the Wesleyan Methodist Twentieth Century Fund (also known as the 'One Million Guinea Fund') which aimed to raise one million guineas (£1.1s. or £1.05) to build a church in Central London. The fund had raised £1,073,682 by the time it closed in 1909, part of which was used to purchase the former Royal Aquarium site for the construction of the Methodist Central Hall, Westminster.
It is the mystery of faith: in the moment of utter despair, where death seems to be the only outcome, where God appears to be absent, God is there and where God is, is life. The cry of desolation, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’, is one that we cry in unison with the crucified Son of God and we find the risen Son of God in unison with us.
Jesus interrupts business as usual. As the coming King he overturns the Temple tables, he turns everything upside down and he continues to do so today!
'Much can be revealed to us in the desert, if we are brave enough to journey through to it, and this lent we have an opportunity to journey through the desert and take the time to re-orient ourselves towards God.'

NHS workers and many others have given themselves to serve. For all of us plans have been put on hold, freedoms curtailed, self-interests temporarily laid aside.
This battle against evil forces that controls, damages and destroys people is still on. And the followers of Jesus are called to be part of that battle.
Hear the powerful words of Jesus for you today – Come, follow me, now is the time, the kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news. Are you brave enough to see the light? Are you brave enough to be it?

At the end of the day, our hopes and fears won’t be met by politics; or by science & vaccines; not by economics or wealth; not by education but ‘The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee - JESUS!’
'This advent, let us bring glory to God by proclaiming the good news, by being good examples, or by our good deeds. This is the gospel we have to proclaim.'

As servants of God we are not called to be bouncers to prevent people we considered to be bad from coming to God. Rather we are called to go and call anyone we can find to come and participate.
In Jesus day there was a cruel understanding of inequality - political, social, racial, financial - which assumed the people at the tip were worthy of their place. Those at the bottom deserved poverty, it was their fault. Cruel then, cruel now.

We need to allow our Lord to re-programme us! For it’s ONLY the Fruit of the Holy Spirit that’ll enable us to BE Jesus people, and the Gifts of the Holy Spirit that’ll empower us to Do the kingdom’s work in challenging days
The reality of Christ’s presence does not depend on our seeing him. But he comes to speak that same word of “peace” into our situation, today, as He did to those first disciples.

God says today, whoever you are, whatever you are, wherever you comes from, however young or old you are, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Everybody who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Which of course, includes you. Believe it and live it.
Is it TIME for you and me to STAND? TIME to STAND with OTHERS; to raise our voices; to address the crowds where they gather today (one to one, or through other mediums, like social media); to address the questions people are asking. Not arrogantly in our own strength but relevantly and confidently, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
God offers humankind the opportunity to repent. Salvation is solely from God, from beginning to end.
'The first movement of the Spirit through the apostles is out of the door, into the streets of Jerusalem, and into the crowd, to preach and witness and heal and serve and bless.'

It is no coincidence that the gospel ends in the very same place where it began - in the Temple in Jerusalem. The final words of the gospel tell us that the disciples who saw Jesus ‘carried up into heaven’ were not sad or crestfallen, but ‘returned to Jerusalem with great joy; and they were continually in the Temple blessing or praising God.

This is the one and only way in which non plus ultra, rather than plus ultra applies to Christianity. For beyond Christ there is nothing. He is the image of the invisible God in whom all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell. He is the Way the Truth and the Life. He is the perfect human, on which to model our own discipleship.
You cannot separate your worship from everyday life! We worship a righteous God and our lives need to reflect His righteousness. ‘The worship I want is justice for the poor – bread for the hungry’ is how we might summarise God’s desire. God was not simply asking worshippers to share their daily bread – he was addressing their life as a nation, their economic systems and laws.
Are you prepared to start tearing down unhealthy dividing walls? Will you trust the Lord that you can rise up anew with Him? Remember the Lord of resurrection and new life!

Have some of us, I wonder, been worshipping a God who is too distant? Or a God who has not been understood or experienced as heavenly parent? Then on this Mothering Sunday, when we celebrate all those fine and lovely things that our creator has placed within us, realise for the first time, or for the 100th time, that you are a loved child of a heavenly parent, and choose anew and afresh to love God, in word and deed.

Are you ready, or not? And if not, what are you going to do about it?'
What sort of mentor are you? Are you passing on the legacy, or are you selfish or lazy with it? Are other Christians coming to maturity because of your commitment to pass things on?
Healing is central to the whole gospel. Healing is integral to the life of the Church. Healing is about the whole of life, life in all its fullness.
