Now, without giving away the book and asking the question giving away, from me, what I'm curious about, what is the one thing? Why do you think people love this book so much? Is it about the time management techniques?
Jay Papasan:
I think that Gary and I were fortunate enough to put this out at a time when people needed it. I think that we look up and everything is accelerating so fast. I think about your audience, people who are entrepreneurs and self-starters, who are looking into improve their lives. The amount of information that's available to us, the opportunities and in some ways, I'm getting to that place where not only I have kids but older parents, the obligations that we face. I think there's a lot of overwhelm going on.
What we need is a mechanism to help us filter out a lot of the noise so we can focus on the one thing that really matters the most.
I think that's why it’s kind of resonating. It's just that we got the right time in our lives, this moment in history when the world is advanced a little faster than we can adapt to it.
Mastering time management techniques Luis Congdon:
One of the things that I really got from your book is how important it is for me to identify the key and essential actions, behaviors, time management techniques, whatever it might be for me to accomplish my goal and for me to try to really identify that you've been referring it to as extreme Pareto.
So let's talk about Pareto's Law briefly. Tim Ferris is a big fan of Pareto's Law. What is Pareto's Law and why do you advocate in extreme version of it?
Jay Papasan:
It's kind of the ultimate successful. It would be like in the world of physics, we have gravity. In the world of accomplishment, we have the 80/20. It comes from an Italian economist in the 18th century. Vilfredo Pareto observed that 80% of the wealth in Italy was held by 20% of the people and that little observation by obscure economist lay dormant until a guy named Joseph Juran, heard about it while studying executive compensation and he was a big quality control guy and he said, "Oh wait. When I look at the assembly lines, 80% of the defects come from 20% of the flaws." He admittedly knew that there was something bigger there. So it was actually on his manual on quality control that it got popularized. In the mid-80s, the 80/20 Principle Book was written. And that's where Gary Keller was exposed to it, my co-author.
The minority of what we do that gets us the majority of what we want. – Jay Papasan
The 80 and the 20, I think those numbers confuse people because they don't always show up. They do a lot but there's a minority of what we do.
So what we want people to do is look at that to-do list and instead of just marching through it like we often do which is to cross off the stuff we can do the fastest or the easiest, most of us are working to make it shorter, to put it in the some sense of priority.
If I can only get one thing done today, what's that thing? And that becomes your number one perhaps learning some time management techniques. And if I can only get two things done today, what's that number two? And most people go from the list like it goes as long as a page. 20 or 30 things down to 4 or 5, really essential ones and they know what their number one is. That's their 20% and we just want to say what's the 20% of that and the 20% of that until they know exactly what their number one priority is. That's extreme Pareto.
Kamala Chambers:
This is so brilliant because one thing whenever we ask thriving launchers what's the one thing they're suffering from most is lacking time management techniques, it's overwhelm. Entrepreneurs, coaches, authors, speakers, and everybody has got a million things to do and there's a million things to grow your business and to make it better and all of it.
This is the same thing that I apply is how I get a lot done. What are the top three things that I absolutely need to do today and focus on those. So that's fantastic.
I'd love to hear more from you about people that are full of passion and full of desire and they have all these different ideas?
What would you really say to that group of people particularly those who seek time management techniques?
Jay Papasan:
Well, the first thing is when we call the book, The One Thing, I remembered going to the book expo in New York and all the New York publishers were just laughing like there's never just one thing when we all have too many things on our plate. So, one of the metaphors in the book is this idea of a domino run.
Take real control over priority - one of important time management techniques I'm going to get exactly to your answer here. The idea is I want to acknowledge that there's a lot of stuff on the list and as entrepreneurs and self-starters, we feel we do have to get to them all but when you line them up properly, just like you've probably done with dominoes at home, one thing, I actually knock over a bunch of stuff and that's the secret truth behind the idea of this Pareto's principle, in our case, the one thing.
When people make a stand and say, "You know what, for my new business, my number one thing is I'm going to be working on cold media. Cold media to drive traffic to my website and I'm going to give that all of my focus. That's where I'm going to start my days. That's going to be like all of my energy." When people actually live that commitment, there's a halo effect.
By taking real control over that priority, you end up doing a lot of the other important stuff just by default.
It's just amazing having you put the conversation from all the stuff that they have to do to this one essential thing that they must do. All the stuff still gets done. So I think, that's the first message people need to hear because they look at that list, they get it intellectually but they can't get pass the fact that numbers 20 and 21 still have to get done and I'm just promising you if you'll live it even for a short period of time, like you're talking about. You're doing your top 3. I learned that from Tim Ferris.
But when you live these priorities, all the other stuff either goes away completely or it gets done without you having to give it a lot of energy. Setting priorities is one of the key time management techniques.
Kamala Chambers:
I'm going to back you up here and say this absolutely works. I'm able to get so much done this way. And I know there's the desire to try to do everything and we pile it all on and people just get burned out.
What do you think passion, desire, and inspiration has to do with this?
See the vision of your life
Jay Papasan:
Yes. When someone truly sees the vision for their life, it often evokes this need to be making progress towards it and it can be hungry and impatient especially among entrepreneurs. Many of us are fidgety about it.
The idea of being really active often takes priority over being productive, activity over productivity and what we are trying to get them to do is just start with the big one. Start with those top one, two, or three and what I love about that when we go back to the overwhelm is on those days when I know I'm not done with my priority and I got it done before noon. Because I've launched my day with it, I feel kind of righteous the rest of the day. There is this sense of satisfaction that I know that my number one priority got checked off already. And even if I have a bad afternoon, I don't feel the same way I do as if that's still hanging over my head at 3 o'clock. And then I get it done right before I get home. Just flipping the conversation to let's start with the most important thing just released a lot of stress for me.
Luis Congdon:
As I'm hearing you two kind of get back and forth here and talk about this one thing and the extreme Pareto, I can't help but feel the sense like you two are more enlightened that me because I'm the kind of person that has 10 tabs opened on my computer. I flipped back and forth through the different tabs through different tasks and I get this hit of inspiration, "Oh! I got to make this call," and so I'll stop what I'm doing in the different tabs. I still need to learn some time management techniques.
I'm curious from you, do you find this sometimes with people, I can't help but feel the sense of, "Oh my god, this could potentially threaten my way of doing things that feels like it's being successful but is it really being successful." Have you found that people like myself who kind of cringe at the idea of trying to shrink down my to-do list so much that then I just feel like, "Oh my god, what about the other things?" I know you touched on this. What is your experience been with all of that?
Jay Papasan:
All right. I'm going to give tough first and then I'm going to let you completely off the hook.
Luis Congdon:
All right.
Kamala Chambers:
Wait, don't let them off the hook.
Jay Papasan:
No, but this is coming from your coach, from the person who cares a lot. Most people are really successful in spite of most what they do, applying time management techniques being the one. I think when we look up, we're kind of aware of all the things we do and we're unaware of this stuff that we're doing unconsciously. Like you're successful, you're nailing it so you look up and say, "This program can't be that broke." And we're all a little resistant to change but the reality is everybody could be a lot more efficient. We're not advocating that people become robots. We're not advocating that they lose that sense of creative wander.
I'm a writer. You even described 20 tabs or whatever, I've got you beat. I have a browser and it's just got all these articles opened. When I'm in creative mode, I'm kind of wandering through that. That's the creative state of mind that's very important to me but it has its place.
We're just asking people launch your days with priority that’s one of the important time management techniques. So you don't have to be this way all day. In fact, people can't sustain it. It's not sustainable to be that focused all that time. However, when you wake up in the morning, we a have thing called the focusing question. What's the one thing I can do, just by doing it, everything else will be easier or unnecessary?
Kamala is like she has figured that out what are the most important time management techniques. She knows what that is for her. The rest of us have to ask. Sometimes, they have to ask every day. You go to that list. You figure out your 1, your 2, your 3, and you just start there. When you do those things, that's when I coach people particularly about time management techniques.
The myth of multitasking and implementing time management techniques We have a whole chapter on multitasking. Learning the skill of multitasking is one of the important aspect of time management techniques. I'm not asking you stop multitasking all the time but when you know you're working on your number one priority, it’s probably a good idea not to have Twitter opened while you're doing that. Just a small dose of extreme focus has magnificent benefits for the rest of your day. You don't have to abandon your work style.
Prioritizing each day will help you get amazing results - Jay Papasan
Luis Congdon:
That's totally awesome and that question to me is such a beautiful question because one of the things that Kamala and I really focus on is having a lifestyle that has enough freedom so that we can travel the world. We can automate parts of our business while mastering time management techniques. We can connect with people but we also have plenty of time to choose and pick and have what we want in regards to our business, our private life, and our relationship.
I think we are asking that question. When you ask that question, I was like, "That's a question I love asking myself on a regular basis."
Jay Papasan:
It eliminates a lot. I think that one of the titles we cater around at one point was just clarity that the people who tend to achieve the most in life seem to have the clearest idea of whether going even if it's just like north. They don't even know what the destination is but they know they're supposed to go north.
When you ask yourself a question like the focusing question in respect of learning time management techniques, it really forces you to narrow it down to one thing. It does give you a sense of where your priorities lie and just by that default, that little exercise I role played earlier, by knowing out of all this stuff on your to-do list, that there is 1, 2, 3, even a 4 and a 5. What it lets you know is all this other stuff isn't as important. You get both of those benefits, the clarity about what isn’t you really should be in your sights and the other stuff that you might be doing for fun. You can also just kind of let it lie.
If you can learn how to focus, you can master time management techniques easily. So there's just so many benefits to just that little bit of taking a moment and I tell people just get an egg time. I've got one on my Chrome. I've just got it bookmarked for egg timer. I set a timer for like 3 minutes. I'll go to my task sheet and say "What is my number 1?" That's just a little exercise I can do and you don't take any longer than that to identify your priority to what I always say is most people know what it is but because they don't stop long enough to ask the question, the just walk around feeling guilty for not addressing it.
Luis Congdon:
Another thing that's just happened that's really awesome for me here Jay is that I just got coaching. You guys are listening, this is why I encourage people to podcast is because we just got done having a coaching session and I feel more clear about how I want to wake up and do my, "to-do list" because I'm the kind of person that makes this long list with a bunch of boring stuff on there. I'm just like, "That'll get done the fastest. I'll do that one first." However, what you really helped me rewire myself for is what's the one thing, the two, and the three, what are these one things that I can wake and if I do these, they're the most leverage for my time and they're the kinds of things that would potentially eliminate everything else, prioritizing things is really one of the important time management techniques.
Jay Papasan:
Yeah, you got it, prioritizing things is one of the time management techniques. That's the simplest form of the process if you wanted to take it one notch up to make those things. Now you know what your priorities are or priority, ideally. You want to kind of time block it which all it means is make an appointment with yourself to do that every day and I'm betting that you probably do this. There's probably some rituals to your morning. There are things that you do on a regular basis most days whether it's just meditating or working out or how you do your breakfast or maybe even just how you fix your coffee, and each of what you do needs some time management techniques.
We interviewed some of the most successful people in the world regarding essential time management techniques. A lot of them made their one thing a ritual. They had a standing appointment. First thing they did in their office or often before they got to it, they were already addressing that thing.
In our research, I could go into the long research but there's a study in British Journal of Health Psychology, if you just make that appointment in time, just navigate, then you're going to do the thing you know you have to do, you're about three times more likely to do it. Just that simple act triples your effectiveness.
Kamala Chambers:
Really powerful. I'm wondering, what are some of the biggest stumbling blocks that people come across when they try to implement time management techniques?
Jay Papasan:
Okay. So the biggest challenge is first and foremost, to stay willingness while implementing time management techniques. They can intellectually get the 80/20 but if they aren't willing to be accountable to it, to hand themselves over to it, they'll often stumble because they've maybe blocked off an hour each morning to try to focus on the priorities.
This is going to be my working on the business time or working on myself-time, whatever your priority is, not the other stuff, and then the fire breaks out. Something urgent but unimportant happens. That is probably the moment of truth for a lot of people is they're going to stumble a few times. They're going to get distracted and then they're going to think, "Well, this thing doesn't really work."
I encourage folks and in our programs to try restrained together a series of days. Just give it a couple of weeks and see if you don't start to see results. I mean, really rapidly, but that instinct to go jump on whatever the fire is, an argument or something happens on social media, if you are kind of just shut all of that away just for a few days in a row, you'll look up at the end of those days and you'll see the results for what they are. It shows up much faster than people anticipated. So, it's battling those distractions. That's got to be the number one thing.
Luis Congdon:
This really reminds of the interview that we're going to be having here shortly with Dr. Gay Hendrix and we're going to be talking with him about his book in his own breakthrough that he wrote about in his book called The Big Leap and inside that book, he's talking about a very similar thing that you're talking about and more about time management techniques.
For him, The Big Leap is identifying what your zone of genius is. That one thing that you light up and it has the most leverage for you and your business and finding ways that you can just do that and do less of everything else and it really speaks to the same thing. It's really fascinating that your book, at a time when we have a lot of tabs open, we're constantly bombarded with social media, we have our phones, we have friends. Like, most of the things that we're doing, we're trying to multitask all the time.
We're driving, we're listening to music, we're on a phone call, we're listening to the GPS and your book comes out at a time that it seems like everything is pulling us the opposite way and then your book comes and people are really loving it due to amazing time management techniques it offers.
Jay Papasan:
Well, thank you for saying that. I think that we've identified six lies between people and success, overlooking time management techniques one. That was the convention we used in. The number two was multitasking. And when I give keynotes or when we're teaching material, it's probably the one that most universally people are like, "Woah, that's me". We're all guilty of it. It's the age we live in.
I mean right now, I can't walk through the park without people bumping into you because they're playing Pokemon Go when they're supposed to be walking their dog. So, you've gotten this thing going on.
Again, I just say, if you know what your number priority is, can you just take a moment and say, "Can I create a bunker for myself? Is there a place?” I know this is important. This is what your next guest is going to talk about how prioritizing things is important in implementing time management techniques.
If it's truly your passion, it's worth making this one investment so that you can do it right. One of the areas that it hit home for me, this implies to every area of your life. I looked at as a working dad, what's the one thing I can do to make sure that I'm constantly engaging with my kids at these different areas and for many years, I wanted to have bedtime. I wanted to read to them every single night and a kid will teach you, you can't multitask. You can't have your phone out and be reading them a book, right?
See, you laugh but it's so true. Like, we could get it and we will tell our kids to behave this way and when we're at our best as parents, we behave that way with our kids. But then, we go to work and --
Implementing time management techniques in relationships
Luis Congdon:
I can't multi task with Kamala either. If I try to have a conversation with her and I pull out my phone, she's like, "Which conversation are you having? The phone or with me? You got to decide" and I'm like, "I'm just responding to someone really quick. I can listen to you."
Kamala Chambers:
I will not talk to anyone if they're on their phone.
Jay Papasan:
God bless you for that, right? I think I have all these intellectual reasons like we really point out. Like, 28% of your day is loss to this ineffectiveness. You lose on average I think 6 to 10 IQ points when you're multitasking. I can go through all the science on that but the thing that hits home for people was actually a little line at the end of that chapter and you're hitting on it now.
The things that actually matter the most are our relationships and the people that we love most. When we can't even give them the respect of our full attention, what is that saying about how we're going to succeed or fail in those relationships?
So, good for you on calling our friend, Luis on that. I've been called on it. My Mets are in the World Series or whatever and I really wanting to have my phone out under the table. I get it but we don't want to that person in the moments of truth of our life that matter most. And that's the whole point of this book. You don't have to be perfect all the time.
Your ability to prioritize things will help you to be wildly successful, not perfection. - Jay Papasan
So I love that you've been called on that. We all have. Being aware of it, we don't always treat our work with that much respect. If it's our lives work, our life is at risk then just like our relationships would be. That's what I try to tell people. Give your work that much respect as well.
Luis Congdon:
That's beautiful.
Kamala Chambers:
Yeah. And you love it he's been called on it but he doesn't like it.
Jay Papasan:
I don't like it when I've been called on it but I know it's good for me. That comes from love, right?
Are multitaskers good at time management techniques? Kamala Chambers:
I have a question that's kind of a side note here. You were talking about the research behind people's IQ, getting lower when they're multitasking and there's research about women are natural multitaskers. Have you seen anything of the difference between the IQ drops between the sexes? Does it also mean that women are good at adopting time management techniques?
Jay Papasan:
No, I haven't seen it broken out but I know that is largely a myth. I think it was Stephen Colbert who coined the word, "Truthiness,” that may have any relevancy with the time management techniques.
Kamala Chambers:
Truthiness?
Jay Papasan:
Right. It sounds true therefore it must be true and the idea that women are better multitaskers because they had to tend to the kids while they work in the fields for millennia. It makes sense therefore we wanted to be true but I actually don't think there's any proof that they're any better at multitasking than men. Neither they are good at adopting time management techniques.
Kamala Chambers:
All right, all right listeners. I want to hear what you listeners have to say about that. Oh man, the drama.
Luis Congdon:
Before you wrap up here Jay, I have the question because as we've been talking about being single-mindedness and picking out the things that were really good at or the activities and tasks that for us will give us the most power, I've heard this from a lot of people that are successful from Arnold Schwarzenegger to Tim Ferris and a variety of really incredibly successful people where you mentioned it briefly where you said a time or for 2 or 3 minutes just to think about your success list and things that you're going to be writing down as your 1, 2, or 3 things that are really important for you.
Have you found that if we set aside 20 minutes or 15 minutes and focus on that one task are we more successful? Or that’s one of the best time management techniques?
Is there certain amount of time that you found that on average is the best amount of time for most people?
What do you think about this?
Jay Papasan:
Well, I think you're referring to the Pomodoro Method and I definitely played with that and this is the idea that we need to break our focus every 20-25 minutes and then we get a fresh spurt of focus. What I know is that focus is a muscle. It's like a fast twitch muscle and that it diminishes very rapidly. But I also know that if you're going back to your future guest, when we're in our passion zone and we're working at the edge of our abilities, you've also heard the term flow, correct?
Luis Congdon:
It's such a beautiful state to be in.
Jay Papasan:
Yes. When we're at that edge of our abilities, we do lose track of time and I personally, I want to hit flow when I'm writing and researching so I do not set clocks for that sort of work because I can achieve flow there. My work is best when I achieve flow, that comes from mastering time management techniques and I really don't want anything jarring me out of it. I have very little science. This is my personal experience.
So for those things where flow matters, this idea of getting in the zone, if you are familiar with it, it's a huge, huge asset when we can get there. And you have to be pushing to the edge of your abilities and then usually something like a hobby or passion that we can lose ourselves in. That's amazing.
However for things like email, I tried to get into email on social media during three windows throughout the day. I usually set a clock 20-25 minutes because in my experience with the volume of messages and things that are happening, that is work that truly will expand whatever time I give it. So I just limit it. And now, I'm playing a game. How many emails can I completer before that clock goes out? I think that's the idea they call batching.
For things that tend to be a little bit repetitive, we're not really going to get into flow unless that's just how quickly we can do them. I love using timers for that to quickly and effectively get it off my plate and then move to the next things.
So, that's my 2 philosophies; big blocks of time for my most important work, little blocks of time for the ton of stuff. That’s how do we need to implement time management techniques.
Luis Congdon:
Beautiful. It's been really wonderful to hear your insight regarding time management techniques and we don't always need hard science to prove something to us. Our own experience is enough and I'm in total agreement with everything you just said.
Do you have any last messages for the audience? Anything that you feel that you want to recap or anything that we left missing out?
Jay Papasan:
I just want to encourage people, if this is resonating for you, if you're thinking of something that maybe you should be doing that you're not doing is just make a commitment to try to do it tomorrow. I think that when people effectively take even one step towards self-improvement but they do it within a very short period of time like 24 hours, the odds go to the roof that they're going to continue because often the first step, it's what I tell you to put your running shoes by your bed, just the first act that first domino can create just enough momentum to keep you going so if that's been haunting you and a lot of people will come out of the audience or say they've read the book and like, "Oh! I realized that I was neglecting this relationship" or "I was neglecting this."
Make a commitment right now to make even the tiniest amount of progress tomorrow or today but no later and see what happens from that.
Kamala Chambers:
Thank you so much for that. It's been a blast having you. It's been fantastic having you on the show. Thank you for talking about The One Thing with us, getting us all more focused and teaching amazing time management techniques.
Jay Papasan:
Thank you so much!

The power of belief determines the power of your personality. Today’s world is very stressful and filled with negativities created by most people because of having unattained goals or having unwanted things. It is very common to hear people blaming their genes for everything that are happening to them. In this interview with Dr. Bruce Lipton, he clarifies that genes don’t control anything yet the power of belief system does. It is our mind that controls our behavior, the power of belief is massive. He also shares that for the last 20 years, he has been living in a completely different world. It has become a heaven on earth for him since he reprogrammed himself. He explains clearly how reprogramming is all about and how this can transform not only you but everything around you.
Key Takeaways
Chemicals released when we’re in love:
First, the chemical that comes out from love is dopamine. When a person is in love, the body feels pleasure and the power of belief is strengthened because the mind interprets loves as a perception and then love is correlated with the release of dopamine which is pleasure.
Lastly, growth hormone comes out when the person’s in love. It’s the reason why people are healthier when they’re healthier.
Chemicals released when we’re stressed have massive impact on the power of belief:
If something scares a person, stress hormones and inflammatory agents are being released.
The chemicals released by the brain in fear shut down the growth of the body and shut down the immune system.
Your body is made out of 50 trillion cells and every day, EVERY DAY, your body losses hundreds of billions of cells. Program your body to have positive aspects of the power of belief
Effects of stress and the power of belief system
One cause of illness is stress hormones inhibiting the replacement of cells. The other cause is the immune system using a lot of energy. Both are not good keeping in view the power of belief system
Whether the stress is real or not, it’s not relevant, its harmful when it turns into the belief making the power of belief stronger. It’s your perception of it. Your cells couldn’t see if your world is safe even if it is. They’re getting the information from the nervous system.
A false assumption could kill you, don’t build the power of belief around false assumptions.
The mind has two minds; the conscious mind and the subconscious mind.
Conscious mind
10% of the brain
Wishes and desires
Subconscious mind
90% of the brain
Always in the present moment.
The Habit mind
This takes in control when you’re thinking
The brain is operating from subconscious during the first 7 years of the child’s life.
Rewriting your subconscious
For the first 7 years, put your earphones on and play a program or behavior that you want to procreate as you’re going to bed every night.
Super learning
A function of the mind is to create coherence between your programs and your reality thus building the power of belief that pays off well.

The Honeymoon Effect
Luis Congdon:
What does it take to change your beliefs, and realize the power of belief and is there a faster and better way to change your unconscious mind so you can have a life that you truly want and get there much faster?
Well, today, we’re going to be talking about the power of the unconscious mind, the power of belief and how some little hidden secrets help you change your unconscious mind and live the life that you really want.
Kamala Chambers:
You guys are in for a real treat. We are here with one of my greatest heroes, Dr. Bruce Lipton who will share his views about the power of belief.
Dr. Bruce Lipton started out as a biologist and he was doing research telling people how cells function that changes according to the power of belief, and what he found in his research with a team of other specialists was something that changed how we perceive the world forever that cells were not affected by the DNA as everybody thought. DNA was not the powerhouse of the cell but it’s actually the outside environment and the power of belief that affects cells. The implications of this are enormous.
So, we’re going to dive into how our belief, how our perception, how our environment affect everything.
Welcome! This is the most exciting episode I could possibly think of. We are here with Bruce Lipton.
Bruce, are you ready to launch?
Bruce Lipton:
I am so excited that I got pre-launched things going on here right now because we have such a wonderful opportunity to talk about the power of belief that can make all of our lives so happy, beautiful, healthy, and I love that.
Kamala Chambers:
You're after my own heart. This is amazing, so excited to learn more about the power of belief.
Well, I know you do such an incredible work in biology and looking at how we can use the brain to its full capacity that I know that your real passion is helping us live more fulfilling, richer, and deeper lives.
I know you have this book out called The Honeymoon Effect and how that can help improve our lives.
I'd love to hear a little bit more about that.
Bruce Lipton:
I use the Honeymoon Effect as a term related to people who just fall in love and I say to those people who have just fall in love, head over heels, they're in it, and I say, "Are you healthy?" They're very healthy. As a matter of fact, you can say, "Oh. Look how they're in love. See how they glow." There's a healthy glow. The power of belief in health makes you healthier.
Did you have a lot of energy when you fell in love? The power of belief and faith in love is incredible. That's always a joke because people made love for days without stopping for sleep or food and the real important understanding is this; was it like heaven on earth? Was life so beautiful at that time of falling in love that when you look around you go, "Oh my god? It’s so exciting to be here. Everything is so wonderful.” The power of belief and expectation is incredible. No matter how crappy it may have been up to the day before you met this person. All of a sudden you meet this person and your life takes on a completely different attitude. Now it's like happy, love, and joy. Even things you didn't like before are acceptable and okay. Your whole life has changed.
Now, a question is what happened that took a life from a not too great everyday life and all of a sudden, thrust you into, "Oh my god, this is heaven on earth." What's really important about this is that the heaven on earth part just seems to show up and yet here's a simple reality, we created that. We created a new life experience from whatever was happening before you fell in love up to that moment. You just fell in love and all of a sudden, everything was different. I adore reading the power of belief in love quotes sometimes.
There was a profound revolutionary change in your whole life and this is the first time that individuals become mindful and understand the power of belief. Mindful means keeping your mind present at the present moment.
The average person uses the subconscious mind about 95% of the day to run their life and only use the conscious mind approximately 5%.
We once said, the mind and everyone thought the mind a single thing called the mind but there are two minds that are interdependent that are associated with the power of belief. They work together but they have different functions and they learn in different ways and this becomes very important.

Secret of success is not one single element, it is multifaceted. Some people feel that they are stuck at some point in their lives. They have read different types of books, gone to all seminars, but still, they’re not making any progress. In this interview with Jack Canfield, founder of Chicken Soup for the Soul, seminar leader, corporate trainer, and entrepreneur, he shares his proven success formula and principles and how these can be applied in our daily lives. He also shares some exercises that would shift your whole life. Key Takeaways
Reasons why people aren’t making a change
People don't have the complete system of what they need to do in order to be successful.
If you understand the Universal Law, and you apply that correctly, then literally, you can achieve anything you want that’s the secret of success.
People have limiting beliefs that are unconscious, breaking through all the limiting beliefs is a secret of success.
E + R = O
E stands for Events plus your Response to that event or those events equals the Outcomes that you get.
All feelings are outcome of thoughts you've had and the meaning you've made out of events, and also the actions you take or don't take.
Most successful people are operated by the universal set of principles that include no complaining, no blaming, no excuse making, take 100% responsibility for your results.
One of the exercises you could do is ask yourself these questions which will help you to find the secret of success
What did I do or not do that's producing my current reality?
What payoff do I get for keeping up like it is?
A lot of people are suffering because there's a pay-off.
Luis Congdon:
Today's guest is Jack Canfield. I'm sure you've heard of the book that sold 500+ million copies. It has been translated in over 40 languages. Chicken Soup for the Soul Series has over 250 titles now published.
Jack Canfield has made a big imprint with his work on success, secret of success and success principles. He's also a seminar leader, corporate trainer, and entrepreneur.
I'm truly honored and inspired to bring to you Jack Canfield and to welcome him to the show.
Kamala Chambers:
What does it take to be truly successful? What does it mean to be successful in business and in life? What is the secret of success?
Maybe you've had this experience where you've read all the books, you've gone to all the seminars, and you're still not making the progress that you want to make and then you are trying to find this secret of success.
Well, today we're going to uncover from the success guru himself what is the only secret of success and how to apply success principles into your daily life for true results.
Welcome to the show Jack Canfield! It is so fantastic to be here with you. Are you ready to launch?
Jack Canfield:
I am ready. Thank you for having me.
Kamala Chambers:
All right!
One thing that we noticed a lot and I that you've seen this a lot too is people go to a lot of seminars, they read a lot of books but then the change doesn't happen. And I know you’re a master of success and a master at teaching success.
And I would love to hear why people aren't really making the change?
Defining secret of success in real, raw terms Jack Canfield:
Well, I think there are number of reasons why people aren’t making the change.
I'd like to think of success as knowing the combination to a lock. If you know the combination to the lock, you can open it.
It doesn't matter if you went to college or not. It doesn't matter what your IQ is. It doesn't matter if you live in Paris, Texas or Paris, France. Secret of success has nothing to do with this.
If you're missing even one number in the combination lock, it doesn't matter how hard you move all the other numbers around. The lock's not going to open. So if you're missing a number or you have the numbers in the wrong order, let's say you know a lot of right things to do but do them in a wrong way at the wrong time in the wrong sequence, it still not going to open.
So basically, I believe you need to know a system of success in order to get familiar with the secret of success that involves the mental behavior, the spiritual behavior, the physical actions, and so forth. If you understand the Universal Law, and you apply that correctly, then literally, you can achieve anything you want.
I literally have had people take my seminars who were homeless, who had no money, and 3 years later, they were millionaires, they were running groups, they had their own TV shows, they worked with the 15 year old who was flunking out of school, getting in trouble, his mother was basically hating him, he's doing drugs all the time. And I taught him this system and he then went ahead and got all ace, graduated doing fine in college. It really doesn’t matter.
What we can do is we can dive into what some of those things that make that system work, which you have to know to know the only secret of success.
But basically, the problem is people are missing an emotional element, the why or the purpose. They don't have goals, visions, support group, and a mastermind partner. They're not taking the proper actions, not responding to feedback, and they're not persevering in the face of obstacles.
Limiting beliefs and the secret of success 2. The biggest problem of all that stuff is people have limiting beliefs that are unconscious. They don't even know they have them. That's stopping them from being able to do the things they need to do.
Imagine this, if you were getting on a plane and you saw a 6-year old getting on the plane with the pilot, most people would get a little nervous and yet most of us are running around as adults being guided by decisions we made at 6 years old to protect ourselves, to compensate for abuse, for being bullied, for being teased, having failure experiences, having parents who are uncomfortable around money, around success, around rejection, etc. That's a long answer but we can delve into the specifics as we go through the conversation. In fact, the secret of success lies in breaking through limiting beliefs.
Kamala Chambers:
That's fantastic stuff. The fact that you're really sending people up for success by having the accountability, by having the action plan, and by having the support in place makes all the difference. I know that we've seen that with our clients and that you've really created systems to make that possible for people.
I'd love to hear some more success principles, the secret of success from you and things that you feel are absolutely necessary to have success in our lives.
Jack Canfield:
One of the biggest things that people don't do is take a 100% responsibility for every aspect in their life. I teach that everything you're currently experiencing is a result of how you responded to everything else that happened earlier in your life. Secret of success is aligned with self- responsibility.
There's a little formula I teach: E + R = O.
E stands for Events plus your Response to that event or those events equals the Outcomes that you get.
So an outcome might be you're overweight. An outcome might be you don't have enough money. An outcome might be you don't have friends and you're lonely. An outcome might be you're unemployed. An outcome might be you're wealthy, or happy, or healthy, etcetera.
So, what is it that allows one person to be successful when another person not when they grow up in the same conditions, same recession occurs, they live in the same town, often, they're identical twins, one's successful, one's not is that the thoughts we think in relation to an event. Secret of success is just more than what we experience in our daily lives.
People think thoughts like, "I'm never going to be successful," "I'll never find somebody," "I'm stupid," "There's no man in this town for me," and blah blah blah blah. And so we have our thought, we have our images that we hold in our head like I say we're going to stand up and everyone's going to dance. Some people get excited and see themselves having a good time and some people imagined they're going to get up and look like a fool and they feel uncomfortable. Law of attraction is really important aspect of the secret of success.
All feelings are outcomes of thoughts you've had and the meaning you've made out of events, and also the actions you take or don't take. So the only thing you have any control over are your thoughts, the images you create in your mind, and the actions you take which includes the things you say and do. Secret of success lies in controlling your thoughts.
What I did is I studied 75 of the most successful people in North America; generals in the army, top sales peoples, CEOs, Olympic, and professional athletes, millionaires and billionaires, etc. I found that there was a set of principles that they all operated by, some consciously and some unconsciously but there was a universal set of principles.
One of the secrets of success is no complaining, no blaming, no excuse making, take 100% responsibility for your results. -Jack Canfield
That’s one secret of success. Then, what happens when you do that is you start saying, "Okay. If I'm experiencing this thing I don't want," let's say pain, suffering, struggle, then, "How am I creating that?"
So one of the exercises that I do with all my clients is to let them say, “What's the difficult or troubling situation in my life?” “How am I creating that?” “What yellow alerts did I get that this is going to become a problem that I ignored?” My back was getting sore. I was starting to put on weight. People were telling me this is not the way you keep a marriage alive. My wife saying, "Hey, you don't spend enough time with the kids. You come home late. You never listen." Asking these questions is important to recognize the secret of success on our own.
We're looking at “What did I do or not do that's producing my current reality?” And then, “What can I do differently and when will I do that?” And also, “What payoff do I get for keeping up like it is?”
A lot of people are suffering because there's a pay-off. They get commiseration from your friends. They don't have to take a risk. They avoid loss of face, loss of friendship, loss of money, etc. But usually, it's just comfort. We're addicted to comfort. The more you are addicted to comfort, the less likely is you can find secret of success.
In fact, a friend of mine was just in the mountains of Ecuador working with the shaman. This shaman said the problem with the people of the North, referring to the United States, is we're all addicted to comfort. And you think about this, we love our big couch, our TV, our nice car, and our good music. We want to be warm and well taken care of. However the problem is growth occurs when you're uncomfortable, and the secret of success lies in the fact that you are out of the comfort zone. It occurs when you're jumping out of a plane, skydiving. It occurs when you ask your boss for a raise. It occurs when you ask that woman for a date. It occurs when you put your book out there for someone to judge. And so we all have to be taking risks but you can't grow if you're not taking risks. So we're addicted to that comfort zone that we find ourselves.
Everything you want that you currently don't have is outside of your comfort zone. That's where all the good stuff is. - Jack Canfield
And so I teach people if you're not a little bit uncomfortable every day, it means you're not growing. I think Bob Dylan had that in one of his songs, "If you're not busy growing, you're busy dying," because there's no static point.
Your life is a constant balancing going back and forth. It's a vibration. For something to vibrate, it has to go right and left, or up and down, or in and out. And so, if it stops vibrating, it's dead.
When we stop vibrating, we stop being alive. When we stop being a little bit uncomfortable, then we're dead.

Online training courses are essential for entrepreneurs. All entrepreneurs want to provide the best products so that they can sell them effortlessly, but the problem is they don’t know how to start creating one or, they have started creating, and they're having a hard time finishing it because they want it to be perfect. In this talk with Bob Bly, one of the best in the field of copywriting and Internet marketers, Bob shares steps on how to create your product and the different modes of delivering them to your target audience. One of the ways is audio which provides a more natural and less polished product, this is what the audience likes better.
Key Takeaways
The Process of creating online training courses
Define the topic or problem. It could be a problem that needs to be solved or a skill set you possess.
Publishing newsletters will make people talk to you and ask questions. Those questions tell you what they want to learn.
Creating mp3 and the recording
Be invited to some venue, such as an internet marketing conference or a trainee association meeting, to speak on your topic where it's a big event and they're recording it.
Deliver live in front of groups, it has the energy of the live audience feedback.
Work with a partner who can be either be the interviewer or a fellow subject matter expert. and essentially to have the interview or conversation which is much more dynamic
Packaging an audio
Sell as a stand-alone product.
Bundle it with your other products, it can be sold for a higher price since it has a higher perceived value.
Not editing your audio/video may keep its spontaneity and help you finish the product in a much faster time.
Luis Congdon:
Today, you're going to be meeting copywriter extraordinaire Bob Bly. He has published over 89 books all under well established publishing companies. He has written for over hundred different clients. He has given seminars all over for the US army. He's been on national TV multiple times. This guy is truly a legend. His brain is just packed full of so much knowledge and we're so excited to have him here to give us some lessons about how to create a product.
All right! We're here with Bob Bly. It's so great to have you on the show. Are you ready to launch Bob?
Bob Bly:
I'm very happy to be here and I am ready.
Luis Congdon:
It's really awesome to have you here. I've read some of your copywriting books. There was one that's like a handbook of online training courses for copywriters. I have been following your stuff on Facebook and what's really interesting is that we've had Ben Settle on the show who is one of my friends. I love his stuff.
As I've been following you, I noticed that you both have two different methods for using email. I found that this was really cool because this kind of spurred this whole conversation that went from Facebook to the Warrior Forum.
Tell me how you and your work with online training courses differs.
Sell your reputation, not your online training course Bob Bly:
I worked with a lot of the more mainstream internet marketers, such as Health Sciences Institute's, Newsmax, Agora Publishing, and Dr. Sears. What these guys found, is that if all your messages are sales messages people will be turned off. They will unsubscribe and your sales rate will actually go down.
If you make a percentage of the messages pure content with useful information, they will appreciate it more. They will become more loyal, bigger fans and they will buy more.
I think slightly over half of your emails should be pure content and the other half should be pure sales messages. It has been a difficult choice, but based on the economy and a lot of personal experience and observation, by me and my clients that this is what works the best.
Luis Congdon:
Booyah Ben! I hope you're listening because you just got beaten in the email game.
Bob Bly:
Nobody beats Ben in the email game. What I would say is maybe he misrepresents himself because he says, "Every message should sell". And yes, he does sell at the end of a lot of messages, but when reading them it's obvious that there's a lesson, some great content, and a story. They're really not pure sales messages.
So I think, whether he admits it or not, he sort of follows this rule.
Selling your product or online training courses First, you decide whether the product should be audio or video.
Then think about the method you'll use to teach your online training courses. There's four different learning modes which are, audio-listening, video-watching, reading, and experiencing it. Different subjects demand different media.
For example, if you're playing golf, you pretty much have to do a video. People have to see the swing. Like there is a guy out there named Bill Dewees who teaches people how to do voice overs. It's got to be done through audio. You need to hear him do it.
For other topics to put in your online training courses, it's really your choice. The reason I mix it up is two-fold. first, you do have some customers for whom the audio method of learning is their preferred mode. They don't want to read a book or watch a video.
Luis Congdon:
What?! People don't want to read books?
Bob Bly:
Yeah! Can you imagine that? It's actually upsetting to me as a book addict.
Luis Congdon:
You know what we should try doing Bob, is we should try splintering a book and posting it on Facebook. Just do short versions of the book, like parts of it. Maybe people would read it that way.
Kamala Chambers:
It’s like one paragraph of your book at a time. And I think you have 85 books or something, Bob. That would take a long time.
So when you're putting out content, are you talking about selling them on amazon? Are you selling audio products or online training courses on any membership sites? Where's your preferred place to sell your information?
Using audio for your online training courses Bob Bly:
Well I have published 89 paper bound books with major publishers in the industry.
One reason I do audio is because some of my customers want that. It never fails. I'll send out an email advertising a new e-book and I'll get people asking, "Don't you have this on audio?" Or I'll send out an email advertising a product through audio and the person will say, "I don't want to listen to it. Do you have it in book?"
You can't please everybody all the time which is why you mix up and make things in different media. - Bob Bly
I know you guys are too young to remember Howard Shenson, who was very big in information and consulting in the 70s and 80s, but he made the statement, "People will pay over and over again for essentially the same content in different formats.” So that's why it pays to have your content in multiple formats. That's why I like audio.
The other reason I recommend audios to other people, is that a lot of people approach me say they want to get into information marketing, but they either can't or don't want to write. They find it an exhausting mental chore to needs be avoided at all cost.
And I say to them that they could put together any informational product without writing a word and of course ironically, an audio is much easier and quicker to do as well.
I do have products on Amazon. I do have a membership site as well, but really, my preferred method of selling online training courses is to generate hot traffic and send emails from my lists and my affiliates' lists to my landing pages.
Some people prefer the Agora Publishing model. The model works the same way, by building a responsive house list, making deals with affiliates who have also done responsive house lists reaching to the same audience, and market your products by sending emails. This will drive the traffic to your product's landing pages.
Kamala Chambers:
Fantastic.
So, how do you go about creating these products and online training courses? This is something that I teach also, so I'd love to hear your perspective. The big thing about it is really deciding what you're trying to sell to your audience.
Through whatever it is that you're creating, what's the problem you're trying to solve or are you really aiming to support people through that process?
So, I'd love to hear a little about your process when creating an audio products and online training courses.
Creating audio products and online training courses
Bob Bly:
First, I define the topic or problem to be covered in the online training courses. Sometimes there is a problem that needs to be solved. Sometimes there is a skill set they want to master, but it's normally one of those two things.
And so I open up a word file. In all caps I write the problem, trying to make it sound a little bit like a title. Don't really worry about it too much if the title isn't finished yet. Then I make an outline listing all the key points that I think someone would want to know.
Let's say I was doing online training courses about book publishing, one of my key points would be, "How to write a book proposal" and other one would be, "Where and how to find a literary agent.” So, I make an outline that has these two key points.
And then once you have that outline, you have several options for recording and producing the audio. I could get into what those are if you wish, but I always start with an outline. You can either just use bullet points or have list of questions.
Luis Congdon:
You know, a method that I've really loved is using Facebook as a way to create the outline and to figure out what should go inside of the copywriting.
The first digital product I ever made was about podcasting. I created a Facebook group, that was completely free, for podcasters teaching them all about podcasting. Everything related to podcasting was posted inside this group. The podcasting aficionados, the fans, and the people that do it every day, joined this group. They started asking questions and I started taking note of the questions that came up repeatedly. Sometimes, I would create polls or I would go in there and ask a question to see what kind of feedback I would get. Or if I didn't know an answer but I saw this question being asked a lot, I'd go and ask it. I would find out what the answer was from other experts and then later, once I had all the content and knew what everybody wanted because I'd been checking out this market for a while inside of Facebook, I had a program put together and my outline was pretty much pre-made for me by the people who needed the product itself. So this makes it very easy to sell it back to them and you can feel confident when you say, "This is what you guys have been asking for. So here it is." You can do the same for online training courses as well.
Getting feedback is essential to improve the quality of your online training courses
Bob Bly:
That's a smart method that people will love. There's another method where you put up your own little survey page, but not using SurveyMonkey. It’s just a little landing page where you ask questions and list topics about how you can increase the quality of online training courses.
Let's say, the topic was climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. The questions are:
Do you want to know what gear you need?
What's the best way to get to the mountain?
What kind of guides would you hire?
You ask them to say, "This is important, can you drive? There is a lot of traffic there.” Then you can reward them by saying, “If you fill in the form and click submit, we'll give you a book that will tell you more.” That's another way to do it, but I like what you suggested even better.
I have a medium to a medium small list of 65,000 subscribers. So when I publish my newsletters, I get a lot of white mail. I get a lot of people replying to these emails. I find out from what they say, what they want to know. People ask me questions by phone also, but mainly by email. Those questions tell me what they want to know about and what will go into your online training courses.
Surveys to understand the market to sell your online training courses Kamala Chambers:
Well, surveys are so powerful and I just want to reiterate that we should never underestimate the power of a survey and understanding your market. You could put out audio products all day long, but if people don't want it if they're uninterested in it and they're not hot to buy it, then what's the point?
I think it's just absolutely important and necessary to first survey your audience. Find out what they want in your online training courses or track your audience, just like you were saying Luis.
Another thing to note, is that when I've created my first info product I was a coach and I'd find myself repeating the questions to clients and getting the same answers over and over again. So I said, "Well, I'm just going to record this." Then, it was so much easier that I could just get passive income from online training courses, rather than having to be a one-on-one coach.
Bob Bly:
Well first, if you don't mind, I don't think we should talk about how to create online training courses, because the outline and the questions are the raw materials for it. But how do you actually create the mp3 file and the recording? Well, there are a couple of options for doing it.
The two best methods to sell your online training courses One of the best ways is to be invited to some venue, to an internet marketing conference or a trainee association meeting, to speak on your topic where it's a big event that they're recording, you make a deal with them. Normally, they have you sign something that says they make all the money from the event and they keep the recording. I say to them, "You can do all that, but I also get a copy of the mp3 and I co-own the rights."
A lot of my informational products are audio and video files that I've delivered in front of live groups. The advantage of that, is that it has the same energy and feedback of a live audience. So that's one method.
My favorite method is to work with a partner who can be either just the interviewer or a fellow subject matter expert and essentially to have the interview or conversation. This is much more dynamic than just you sitting in a studio by yourself, reading the bullet points and questions and then answering then them. This is very monotone and won't keep the listener interested.
Those are 2 of my favorite ways to sell them.
Luis Congdon:
Sounds like podcasting to me; in its early days.
You know, one of the things that I see a lot of people do that is really powerful, is link to do a podcast. This is a subject that I'm passionate about. I'm very passionate about using podcasting to sell online training courses. I'm known as the podcast guy. I'm known for being Facebook organic and building a business on Facebook that is all organic. However, whenever I tackle these subjects, I'm kind of like a technician and I spend a lot of time with it and it's not what most people will do. And so the product that needed to be created is answering the question, "How to do these things?" And they're very specific. And people wouldn't really want to pay a lot of money for it or only a few people would end up buying it. And by so surveying the audience, I was able to find out more of the global stuff. I mean, that's really what you're getting out there. Right Bob?
Bob Bly:
Yeah. I'm not used to podcasting, although my younger son is a podcasting addict. So those are couple of the ways that we create online training courses.
Market your online training courses - Define your demographic
In terms of selling them, different people will use different mechanisms, but I will either take an audio and sell it as a stand-alone product or I’ll bundle it with other stuff I have. When you do something that's bundled in multimedia, you can charge a higher price as it has a higher perceived value.
So those are the two ways I packaged an audio product. I still offer them both as a downloadable mp3 and in a CD format, which a lot of people do not do anymore.
Kamala Chambers:
The new thing is flash drive. You can just drop ship them a flash drive. Do you ever do that for your online training courses?
Bob Bly:
No. We either let them download the mp3s for the online training courses or we send them a CD album. My demographic is older and lot of them like to put a CD in the radio of the car and listen that way. The younger people will tend to want a digital form of the online training courses for one of their devices like a laptop or an iPad or they’ll download it to their iPod.
Kamala Chambers:
Yes. It's really important to know your demographic and how you deliver your products including online training courses. That's another reason to do a survey. That's one thing that I ask when I put out a new product. I always ask, "How do you want your information delivered to you?" I'm really surprised sometimes. Some audience, they just want videos, some want the flash drives, some want the audio, and then its blend for others. So I think it's important to appeal to your audience and mix it up too. Really great stuff!
So I want to throw this in there. This could be really easy. The first time I put out a product I had a headset and I had whatever recording software came with my computer. I have a Mac so it was garage band style. Just open it up and started recording. It can be as easy as you want it to be or you can make it complex. You just and your friend like Bob was talking about. Have your friend in the room with you and then have someone who's also an expert. You guys can banter about it and get stuff out that way.
So Bob, anything else about creating online training courses before we get into selling it?
Bob Bly:
What I do when I'm doing it, with a friend who's really a pure colleague and also knowledgeable in the topic, we tend to sit at a table with a nice high quality digital recorder. Each of us has a nice high quality digital microphone. And we have a conversation about it. And one thing that shocks people, we don't edit it. It is pure raw, right off the first draft and it has the spontaneity that a lot of editing will take away from it. And also we can do it in much faster time.
And just to give you an idea of the numbers, one of the early programs I did with my partner Fred Gleek, I think we were recorded it for maybe 5 hours. That was our complete labor in it, no editing. That time, there were no mp3s. We gave it to our fulfillment house to do CD's and we sold well over $120,000 in sales worth of those online training courses. So in an hourly rate, that's pretty good.
Luis Congdon:
You know, that's awesome and I can't believe you just told us that you don't edit your stuff. I mean, Bob, shouldn't everything be edited these days? We want to look perfect in front of everybody.
Market your online training courses - Consider audience preferences Bob Bly:
It's funny and I worked in the corporate world in the late 70s. We were taught if you're going to do a marketing video, it has to be as close to broadcast quality as possible, but today that's not true. People do videos on their smartphones with their webcams.
In the current state of business, people have come to like things that are a little more raw, natural, and less polished. - Bob Bly
It's very strange to me but that's the way it is.
Luis Congdon:
Yeah. I want to agree with you on that because it totally reminds me of when we launched a program and there was this big global thing that was happening with podcasting, and I was wearing a blazer a button up shirt. The way it was received was not as great as I wanted it to be. And the team that was producing this and helping us put this thing on came back and said, "Luis, I think you should wear either just a button up shirt or a Henley so it's just a shirt with 3 buttons and long sleeves And I did that and the reception was phenomenal. They really stressed, just bring them in your living room not in your office.
Bob Bly:
Now, I remember the first time I gave a talk recently without a suit and tie, I was in shock. I said, "How could I be doing this?" But that's how all the speakers dress. The formal is gone and the only medium where I think a higher professional level of production is demanded is ironically, books.
Luis Congdon:
Yeah that's true. I get angry anytime I see a letter that shouldn't be there.
It's true though. If I'm reading a book, I'm like, "Why did this person misspell that word? Do they not know that "there" should be spelled that way? I'm going to write it up. I don't know if I trust this guy anymore."
Bob Bly:
That is the problem. In writing the standard is higher. I had someone called me up and complain about one of my books.
Luis Congdon:
They called you?
Bob Bly:
Yeah. They said on page 3 and 33, you misspelled whatever. I said, "Not for nothing but that book is a hundred thousand words long. You know what error rate that is to have one misspelled word out of a hundred thousand?" And I did the math for him but yet, when people see a typo, they have a very negative reaction.
If you noticed, none of us wants a regular job on this callI. If you're looking for a job and you have one typo on your LinkedIn profile or your resume, that's it.
Luis Congdon:
Done. So now, if I go back to this book Bob, how you corrected or --
Bob Bly:
No because it was not an eBook. It was a paperback book published by my regular publisher and there were 5,000 copies in the warehouse.
Kamala Chambers:
Of course.
Bob Bly:
So I wrote them a letter and said, "On the next printing, could you fix this?" Whether they actually will remember to do that is another story.
Kamala Chambers:
Well, before we wind up, any pro level tips you want to give to sell your audio products?
Luis Congdon:
Any last tips that people should know about the How to be a copywriter.
Bob Bly:
I have found that with video and audio, if you can find one or if you have one, putting a really good 2-minute excerpt as an autoplay video on the landing page really helps. Give them a little sample. And we do that with a lot of our audio and video files.
Kamala Chambers:
Awesome.
Well, it's been so great to have you on the show.
Luis Congdon:
It’s our pleasure to have you on the show. Thank you so much for your time Bob.
Bob Bly:
I really enjoyed it.

Transitions are happening every moment in our lives, and it's so important to master the life transitions. Some people have negative reactions to it because there are times when things are not going as they plan or how they think it should be. Toltec wisdom teacher Don Miguel Ruiz Jr. talks about how respecting our emotions, having the confidence to make a choice, allowing yourself to change your mind, and perceiving the life moving around and within you, could help you move through transitions gracefully.
Key Takeaways
Kamala Chambers:
Life transitions happen and it is a continuous process. We break up from our partner, we lose a relationship, we move homes, we get sick and have to adapt to a new way of life. Someone dies. Transitions happen and today, we're going to bring on Don Miguel Ruiz Jr. to talk about life transitions and how we can move through those transitions in a state of grace and ease and some really beautiful tips on how to make transition easy.
Luis Congdon:
Today's guest is Don Miguel Ruiz Jr. He's somebody that I absolutely love. He's got so much wisdom to share about life transitions. He was trained by his father Don Miguel Ruiz Sr., who wrote the book The Four Agreements and Don Miguel Ruiz Jr. has his own spin and a fantastic way to bring to life the Toltec Wisdom.
So on today's interview, I'm really honored and just really grateful that Don Miguel Ruiz Jr. has come on the show to grace us with his presence and wisdom.
Kamala Chambers:
It is so great to have you on the show. Are you ready to launch and dive in Miguel?
Don Miguel Ruiz Jr:
Yes. Thank you so much. How are you?
Kamala Chambers:
We're doing so lovely because we're sitting here with you. Right, Luis?
Luis Congdon:
That's right. And we're going to be talking about life transitions, shifts, and going through this process. Right now, you're in the process of moving but in life, all of us are dealing with some sort life transitions at some point or another either the loss of somebody, the birth of a child, moving homes, and changing.
How is that for you to go through these life transitions and how does the Toltec wisdom helped you to move through this space?
Mastering life transitions Don Miguel Ruiz Jr:
These transitions are all about life. Sometimes life transitions make you unhappy. I remember the time when I was a child when my father took me to the park one day and after playing sometime, my dad found me crying on the edge of it. He asked me why I'm crying and I said, "I was too big for the swings." I'm too big to play and I was so sad because it's something I enjoyed to do, something I loved to do and I was so carefree about it and then, it came the day where I went to the swings, I went to the park and I was too big. I couldn't fit. It was uncomfortable and I lost something and it was heartbreaking.
Right now, we're transitioning and we are going through so many unique life transitions. We're making the slow process. Moving is always slow and it's a process. Moving from California to Nevada and I'm watching not just my wife’s and my transition but I'm watching my kids and it's the same concept. We lived in a home we love and enjoy but we get to the point where it no longer fits. The lifestyle and the functionality don't fit and it's time for a transition in order to adapt to a new reality. So some life transitions are intentional which make us happy.
Some types of transitions are life such as when someone passes away and when someone is born. And it's so true because my younger brother is having a new baby next month so we going to have a new Ruiz member. That's one of the reasons why we're moving and it all comes down to attachment. The attachment of a dream that we thoroughly enjoyed, that we thrived in, that we made lifetime bonds.
We have neighbors and friends whom we're going to be friends for the rest of our lives. We know that. Yet, there's a moment where it doesn't fit anymore and we're going to transition to a new place and we're going into the unknown. In the unknown, at certain patterns, we know will repeat themselves but still the unknown and a huge emotional part of us wants to hold on to something that makes us happy, makes us feel comfortable.
Growth comes from going into the uncomfortable. -Don Miguel Ruiz Jr.
Relearning and if something happens when we're transitioning, we think we can't do this again.
For instance, someone who goes through a breakup had first thought "I'm never going to love again. How am I going to fall in love again? I will never have a relationship like that." And then, you found out the next relationship is even bigger and better than the last one because you found a relationship that fit who you are as an individual.
Going through life transitions all comes down to becoming aware of ourselves, taking a step forward, making a choice, and taking the leap. – Don Miguel Ruiz Jr.
Some would say, "Take the risk" but it's really not a risk. It's just simply, "Take the step to the new stage in life," whether it's the death of someone we love, the birth of someone we're going to love, or just simply letting go of a dream where you saw your kids grow up the next last 6 years. They're going through a dream where they're not going to be the kids. They're going to be teenagers and what their teenage years are going to be is life transitions.
A person going through life transitions is like the serpent that sheds it skin and because he loves the skin so much, he carries with him wherever he goes all the skins he's left behind and it's just a huge mess. But in order to survive, he let go of it all and engaged in the new environment.
Kamala Chambers:
Something I really love about what you said is learning how to play again and once we move into a new space when we go through different life transitions, it's almost like we have to find who we are again in that new space, in that new situation, in that new relationship, and in that new home. I love that you brought play into it.
Do you have any practices, exercises, or tips on how to bring more of that delight into the new experience?
Don Miguel Ruiz Jr:
I remember a joke that Woody Allen said. It is, "If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans." Funny enough my grandma used to say the same thing.
Today was my daughter’s first day of school. It is one of important life transitions in a child’s life. She's going to school even though we're transitioning. Here she was planning how her day is going to be, planning her clothes, and what she's going to say. She has all these things prepared and then, she shows up, and everything she thought of wasn't really going to apply because the environment changed everything enough that her whole routine just changed and she has to improvise.
Self-efficacy in life transitions In reality, when we enter a new stage, you're relying more on your ability to improvise and re-engage in a new environment, which is to be aware of where your new setting is, what the environment is like, who the people are.
The willingness to see again instead of projecting on to life what you want to see and expecting that's what you're going to see. That’s where everything falls apart during some life transitions. Negative emotional reaction kicks in because it's not going as you plan, as you think it should be, and people are not behaving the way you think they are. You're already going in to scenario with a preset of ideas and beliefs that to some degree we're attached too.
But, if we learn to detach, be willing to be in the environment, and not to expect a single thing allows us to be better prepared for what's ahead because the constant is oneself. So the one thing that you can expect to see is you. You are the constant in every room you're in and in every cycle you're in. Even as our transitions into new stage in life, you are the constant.
So if there's a practice in applying towards life transitions, it’s learning not to project or anticipate how it will be even though it's fun to come up with potential stories but not to get attached to them so that we can actually see what’s in front of us. And it's true, not just with a new environment but within ourselves.
Surviving life transitions So the practice simply means to take in a breath. Allow yourself to take that breath and focus all your attention there and realize that is the beginning point. When you open your eyes you're starting a new transition. You're starting a new stage in life. What do you see? What do you hear? What are you engaging? From there, inspiration comes in, because instead of thinking of what should be, you see what is and you get to play with that play.
Luis Congdon:
This really reminds me a lot of your last book where you talked about how you are watching a soccer game and the narrators were telling you about the athlete, what he was up to and what was going on in his life transitions. They're giving you a play by play not just of the game but they're also informing you of who it is and shaping your opinions of what's happening. Then, you talked about watching that game on mute.
Don Miguel Ruiz Jr:
Yeah, the narrators.
Luis Congdon:
That's a big process to stop that narrator. I don't know about you Kamala but, sometimes I really struggle turning that narrator off. I have a lot of opinions about what's happening, who someone is, and that narrator sometimes gets in the way without knowing the life transitions.
Kamala Chambers:
Yeah, the stories that we tell ourselves and I think it's kind of where most humans are built to create stories about what each moment is bringing, what people are bringing, who people are, even stories about ourselves. I think that could really get in the way in a time of life transitions and I love the way you've reframed it for us here.
What is something else that you feel a stumbling block for people going through life transitions?
Emotional development and life transitions Don Miguel Ruiz Jr:
I'm going to combine that question with the commentators or the narrators because there’s the emotional factor. Personal journey or personal transformation could be easy if we were all robots to avoid of any emotion. If we allowed simply logic to reign in our bodies, then we wouldn't need self-help. It's easy to transition but we are emotional beings. We are beings who perceive life throughout this spectrum of emotions ranging from complete joy to complete anger, to complete misery. And, we go through all those stages. We get to that and experience that. The emotions are real during all life transitions.
What has been true to them may not be and that's where the combination of the narrators kicks in because our narrators are the voice of our thoughts. My father would have called, "Voice of knowledge". The narrators are basically are thoughts or beliefs and ideas that tell stories about the unique life transitions. The thing about a narrator, which simply a word to describe that voice of thought, that tree of thought that happens in our mind, is the same energy I use to move my leg and to move my arm. It's the same energy I use to create a thought and at the root of every belief I have there is a yes, giving it life.
There's nothing in my belief system that I say, "No" to. Thus, our narrators are there because we give them life as our life transitions.
So we're telling the story. We love to tell stories. We love to put into words what we perceive whatever happens during the life transitions. Like the expression, "Action speaks louder than words" but we use words to describe every action. We describe actions with our words and those words have an emotional charge.
We can paint a scary painting, a scary story, or the most illuminating, hilarious, wonderful experience. It can be shifted immediately. We can paint the moving to transition as this and they're going to love again or I'm never going to experience happiness again. I'm never going to make friends the way I had them here. When you paint that picture with that narrator, then the unknown, which is the future, looks grim, dreary, and terrible.
But if you'll see it from the point of view of joy or happiness, it’s going to be happy and it’s going to be great. But when you respect that emotions are real and respect what our emotions are, you find that they have great benefit and when that happens, you're no longer allowing the emotions to take actions for us. We take the action during emotional life transitions. That's the whole point of the mastery of self.
We become aware that I control my,"Yes" and I control my, "No," I control the energy that controls and animates this body and this mind during life transitions from doubt to self-confidence. But, in honoring our emotions, which is I think the clouds are perception when we move or a transition that blinds us and what feels are narrator’s story.
When we honor our emotions, we're no longer blinded by our emotions which is one of the key to handle life transitions. We get to see what's in front of us and that’s very important because in front of us, are multibillion opportunities, an infinity of possibilities.
For example in my case, the move to Reno could be disastrous or it could be the most wonderful experience there is because we're moving to be near my brother, his wife, and new baby Julius. We rebuild our dream around family. The kids have a place to run around near Lake Taho. This completes the story and of course, things that can go wrong, but that's going to be truth if we stay in Rockland or not.
It's about who is telling the story. Am I allowing to tell the story? Am I allowing my emotions to tell the story as life transitions? Or am I allowing life to tell the story? And when we allow life to tell the story, then we can clear the narrator because when life tells the story, you realize that it's a dance. A dance between the choices I make in life and the consequence that life gives back. It's a beautiful balance which helps us to find peace during life transitions.
For example, we just made three offers and we changed our mind on the first two because we realize we like the house and that felt good.
Self belief during life transitions To able to trust your own judgement and to trust your own capacity to change your mind when it's needed because you also realize that's not going to reflect my reality and not because I'm being fickle or being wishy washy, it's because I'm realizing that the consequence of that choice may not reflect the consequences I want to experience in life. And then, allowing myself to change my mind to respect myself, to have a voice, allows me to finally find that one place where I said, "You know what? I like it. I want it" and you know it's the correct one when you make the choice and it feels good and there's no doubt behind it. That's how you clear the narrator.
The narrator can either be the parasite during critical life transitions, which basically distorts everything I see, controls my actions and my judgement of myself, controls me through this image of like, "No, you have to fall through it because you got to do this, you got to do that" or you have the narrator be the ally. The ally is the one that tells the story that reflects life as is as opposed to a narrator that describes life as an illusion. To me, the whole point of the Toltec tradition is to regain confidence in yourself to make a choice, to express to yourself, "This is what I want. This is what I don't want," and actually listen to it.
Luis Congdon:
Not too long ago, I was talking to a client and we were talking about some of the things happening in this person's life and what was going on as his life transitions. As I listened, I could hear the narrator and how the narrator wasn't really supporting this person and supporting their journey. I started to play around with just the thoughts around what was happening with the client and at some point during our conversation the client said, "You know, I'm noticing I can actually decide which voice I want to listen to," and they were just astounded by this idea that the voice happening in your head was just a commentator and that you could comment right back and actually start having a conversation. They could have a choice and that could totally shift their experience.
That to me is something you're talking about and it's a very powerful place to get to during the important life transitions. I know that sometimes, I don't always have the wits about me to be in that space to notice that.
I know that Don Miguel Ruiz Sr., your father had a heart attack. He was in a coma and was out for a while. To me, that's a transition to have this moment where you realize, "I could die at any time. I'm not invincible and I'm might not always be around," and there was a decision he made while he was out.
I’m curious, what's that been like for you? Has he changed a lot? What's that experience to watch him go through this transition?
Don Miguel Ruiz Jr:
Yeah, the man that came back from the coma was not the same man that went into it. The reason why is because life puts these obstacles in front you and it's the time where you realize you could walk to walk and as fast as you can talk to talk. The doctors told him to spend the rest of his days in a sofa resting and my dad said, "No. I'm going to live." The man climbed the top of the Pyramid of the Sun with 15% heart capacity.
He came back of his coma. He was with a heart that's only 15% capable of functioning. His body was full of pain and he was given a very delicate balance of medications. People would give him all this talk and give him homeopathic this, homeopathic that, medicine here, medicine that. Anything they really would introduce would actually kill him, because you never know how his body reacts. That's the thing about medicine. There's a fine balance.
Angel training during life transitions Learning how to live with that balance was very interesting to watch my father do and yet, not allowing pain to stop him from living was an even bigger thing. Like you were describing, watching your clients becoming aware that he can pay attention to the narrators and he can choose. That's what we called "Angel Training." It's actually very advance work for us because it is the moment where you become aware of that I am not the voice inside of my own mind but at the same I am. Sometimes life transitions very interestingly.
For example, if I'm the voice that's talking to my own mind, who's listening? I am. I am listening. If I'm the one who's listening, who's talking? I am. I am not this body, I am also not this mind but I am the energy that animates both and my mind is this infinite possibility because I can dream and perceive in so many directions.
The voices that are going to be the loudest during our life transitions are basically the voices that we give attention to. What I mean by voices is, "Thoughts". They are the thoughts in our minds because we're constantly interacting within ourselves. We're the individual dream.
So what we call, "Angel training" is learning to be the messenger and basically giving attention to the voices or also known as thoughts or beliefs in our mind that we want to give attention to. Because whoever we give our attention to, that's what's going to control how we respond, "Yes" or "No."
I become aware that I control my will. And that's something I wished with my father during his life transitions. When he decides to take a step to climb the Pyramid of the Sun, even with that much pain, he adapted. He didn't run it the way he used too. He figured out a way that allowed him to do it, which is to do it slowly, take a few steps, sit down, have the patience. Also, it was an exercise in patience rather than strength because that's what we're used to.
If we're so used to achieving something with this one instrument and we think we can't do it in any other way except for this instrument. In this case, it’s force or strength that helps you out in handling life transitions. To build up the strength of the heart, to build up the strength of the body to go up to the pyramid but also if you don't have those tools, if you don't have the heart and you don't have the muscle, then what you got? What's in front of you? Patience and will.
So now, you learn how to use that instrument, patience and will. You're going to listen to the voice that's going to nurture it.
From that point of view, the voice that's going to speak the loudest is the one that's going to help you in the environment you are in. That's choosing which one to control, which voice, which narrator is going to help us. That's what we know as the ally. And for that, I am aware of what I give my attention to, aka what I give my power to, which belief I give a power to in surviving major life transitions.
There's an image that my brother has that I love to use and apparently it's not just my brother but it's everywhere. There's a story of an old, Native American talking to his young grandson how you can manage your life transitions using your willpower. The grandfather tells the son,"There are two wolves inside of you. One is good and the other is compassion. The other one is evil and it's anger and lack of compassion, and they both exist within you." The grandson said "If I'd make them fight, which one will win?" And the grandfather will say, "The one you feed."
Whichever one of these beliefs, knowledge, ideas, voices, or narrator, be it fear or anger or love or compassion, the one that's the strongest is the one that we give attention to.
So, with that in mind, the change in my father after his heart attack, even after his heart transplant, was the faith in himself and who's he going to give attention to, the voice of fear, the voice of doubt, or the voice of patience and the voice of resilience. Two of them will help him, two won’t. One will feed the fear and the other will feed his ability to accomplish what he wants.
From that point of view, we go back to the previous question. How to silence the mind as our life transitions through various stages? How to take out those filters? It is to become aware that the filters don't control you. You control the filters. You control what goes on in our mind.
For example, my dad gave me this technique. If you find you're having a negative thought in your mind and is making you miserable in the way you know that makes you miserable by the way you feel. The best way to change it is to let the thought finish. When the thought finish, redirect your attention.
You see, there are gaps between thoughts. There's a gap between the first thought and when you finish the thought, our thought begins. There is silence between the two thoughts. When you become aware of that gap, you slowly focus first your attention on how your thoughts end. When you become aware on how to catch it, you shift your direction. You shift your attention to go on a different direction.Be it the sound of your breath, or sound of music. You're able to prolong the space between thoughts, which means you are able to prolong silence.
And it's an exercise in the strengthening of the will to make the most of our life transitions. But it's also this exercise of becoming aware of the voices in our own mind, the thoughts, or the narrators.
So, when we become aware of that gap. The game my father always wanted to play is to teach us how to prolong that gap because what happens in that gap is that you're no longer projecting, you are perceiving. That's what I've come to learn. You begin to perceive what's around you. That's what the gap is. It's the silence of life that's allowing you to perceive it. Because when we have a thought, we're projecting.
Once again, the function of the mind in the Toltec tradition is to dream, which simply means to perceive and to project as our life transitions. Projection is the thoughts. Projections are the least that we have. That we're saying at the beginning of show about transitions, we're projecting into the unknown. A possible story that we want to have and we may be happy and may be sad but the moment we stop projecting is when we learn to perceive, listen, see and, be in the moment. It's what they call, "The zone". It’s when you become aware of life moving not only around you but within you.
I've found my father more in that space and me, growing up, being in that space was difficult because there are a lot of consequences to my father being there. There are a lot of consequences and decisions and the insurance and bills and all kind of thing that had to be paid because to have a heart attack and being in a coma is a very expensive thing. It costs a lot of money and the wrong choice can have a stronger ramifications. So you have to be aware of what choices you make and how you do it, why you do it.
My father usually calls this, "Being in the eye of the hurricane". Letting the hurricane go around you but you stay in the center. And what I've become aware of is to stay in the center and find that gap in between thoughts and even then, going back to how we perceive those voices and narrator which you listen to.
Controlling the gap, and honoring the emotions during life transitions When you control that gap between thoughts, you all of a sudden control what the narrator is going to talk that eases life transitions. It becomes a lot easier because it's like giving someone permission to talk in your presence. All of a sudden, you realized, it's been you. You've been giving that narrator permission to talk, to control, and to drive all that time.
That's where honoring the emotion comes in. Once again, we honor this is how we feel. We feel that sadness, we feel that anger, and we feel that thing.
For example, yesterday, I made an offer on the house and I watched the emotional reaction on all four of us, my wife, myself, my daughter, and my son. And I realized, as I pay attention to that, I could have let the narrator on my head continuously say, "No, no, no. This is this house. This is the house," and force myself to do something that may not be the right thing. If I listened to it and change my point of view and see what does this one do, then all of a sudden, one voice got happy. My daughter got happy but my wife didn't get happy. Her narrators were going off. Then we made a choice and then, I resented the offer.
After talking, I'm realizing this one made my daughter happy, this one made my wife happy, this one made my son happy. Now, this one is going to make me happy if I just change my perception on this one little thing that I didn't like about it. Now that I changed it, I'm like "Hey, wait a minute. That does work. All right, fine. I'm saying yes to it" and also, all four of us are saying, "Yes". That's the gap you need to fill in carefully during the life transitions.
Kamala Chambers:
What a beautiful experience for you all to arrive at the same place. I think that's kind of a trick that I find is important for me as my life transitions. That practices like looking at choices and decisions and transitions from a holistic experience. There are always different aspects of ourselves inside and for me, it's about getting all of those pieces playing together. All of the different aspects that are in alignment so I'll feel that ultimate joy and you're doing it with your entire family, which is such a big move and such a beautiful place to get to.
Don Miguel Ruiz Jr:
Yeah, it's a thing that reflects my love for them. To love someone unconditionally is the willingness to see them for who they are rather than a projected mask as our life transitions. If you pay attention to what we were talking on the show, it's all about the projected mask.
Sometimes, we're so attached to that projection that we are forcing life to fit that projection but, sometimes life doesn't fit that projection. When you make it fit, it’s like trying to put up you through a cylinder hole which is not going to work. Even though you may try it, you might draw all the force and you might actually break it because you're trying to make it fit during the life transitions. It’s not going to work. The way to do it is to be patient.
Now, the unconditional love is the willingness to see life, to define the balance between having the confidence in yourself to make a choice, which is to take that step into the transition and be confident in yourself to not project what that step is going to look like but be completely aware of what that step is. Because, in being flexible way to decision, in changing your mind and going "This is what I want".
The difference between having the confidence to make a choice and changing your mind versus not having confidence in yourself and changing your mind is not because you can see what's in front of you but you're afraid to make a choice.
There's a huge difference in the two. It looks dramatically different. One is to not have confidence in your choice thus, you're allowing the elements around you to control you choices. In this case, family, a realtor, or a family friend, and they make the choices for you. But if you have confidence in yourself and you listen to the realtor, the friend, and the family, you're going to find the one step that satisfies all and that's the one that works because it satisfies yourself too.
Luis Congdon:
And what I like about what you're saying too is that there is space for all the voices to be heard and listened too and then, bringing it all back to where we started of listening to the emotions and voices in your head and making a decision and bringing everybody into play.
Don, it's been a real honor to have you on the show today. Really loved everything you've said.
Thank you so much and blessings to your move and I'm excited for you.
Don Miguel Ruiz Jr:
Thank so much Luis. I really appreciate the opportunity. Kamala, thank you for having me on your show.

Success is a relative term, so is the key to success. Most entrepreneurs are so occupied with their businesses thinking that working hard may lead to success but they forget about their families and what their passion really is. Dale Partridge talks about how keeping the balance will result in a successful business, in fact keeping balance both in business and life is the key to success. He emphasizes that being successful is not just about money. It’s about having it all including your family, your spiritual life, your reputation, and your physical health. Mere one factor does not define success, however the key to success is an outcome of the many essential factors that we usually overlook.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Our definition of success is based on what we’ve seen in our culture, media, and people we’ve looked up into.
The key to success is a wide term. Success is having it all, having a strong relationship with your family, having a strong spiritual life, having a good reputation, physical health, and finances.
If you just build the person, then they’ll build the business.
It’s very easy to know how to start a business. What’s not easy is maturity, the ability to make good decisions, discernment, discipline, integrity, and patience.
The more focused you are in keeping the balance, the more successful your business becomes. The key to success lies in the fact that how much you are good at keeping the balance.
Men or women who can’t take care of their home might be successful for a time but aren’t going to have a long-term success.
Life is all about balance and keeping balance is the key to success.
It is a very difficult time because we live in a world where we you need to do a lot of things but it’s all about priorities and discipline. For some the key to success may be self-discipline yet prioritizing things is equally important.
Discipline for me has always been doing something you don’t necessarily like to achieve something you love.
If you don’t believe your family is more important than your work, then it will show in your actions. The key to success in your relationship depends on how you prioritize your relationships.
An entrepreneur is someone who learns how to make more money with less time.
Not hard work but smart work is the key to success. We don’t start businesses so that we can work more. We start businesses so that we could work less so we could have more time to do those things that we do love with the people that we do love.
You’re not an entrepreneur if your life is all about working. You’re an employee at your own company.
Just being contented in that journey is another process and another personal maturity that I think comes along as an entrepreneur especially in the later years as you start to actually make money and be successful while trying to find the key to success.
If your goal is making millions of dollars, you have to question yourself where your heart is and what your motivations are. Sometimes knowing the inner voice is the key to success.
Make decisions based on what’s the dream, what you really want, and what’s next. Don’t constantly just end on one dream. Defining the key to success is a continuous process.
Be excited for what’s next but at the same time, be happy with where you’re now. Your authentic happiness is the key to success in your life.
Performance addiction comes with as an entrepreneur, which helps you redefining the key to success.
If you have a strong spirit of independence that’s keeping you away from having a relationship with others, you need to break that down and allow yourself to open and create that success story from the maturity that comes with growing up. This is the key to success in building successful relationships.
We tie our success to those negative behaviors.
It doesn’t mean it is normal when it’s common, you need to redefine these both in order to recognize the key to success
Constantly remember what normal is because the world is changing it all the time.
Moral relativism is when what’s normal for you changes. It’s the type of conversation that an entrepreneur without moral code does.
When you try to be steady, reliable, normal, and be clear about what something is, people will follow and look up to you.

TRANSCRIPTION: THE KEY TO SUCCESS – DALE PARTRIDGE
Luis Congdon
Today’s guest was a millionaire by the time he was 27 years old. He’s a father. He’s been invited to launch by the likes of Jack Dorsey. He’s ran multiple, multiple successful businesses and yet at the crux of who Dale Partridge is, is someone who seeks to find balance-the key to success, and tries to live a moral and healthy life where it’s not just business and it’s not just work but it’s a life based on balance, family, and strong morals.
Today, we bring you Dale Partridge to talk about the key to success, morality, and balance.
Kamala Chambers
This is very exciting to have you here, Dale. Welcome! Are you ready to launch?
Dale Partridge
Super excited to chat with you guys today.
What is the key to success?
Luis Congdon
So Dale, you’ve created multiple businesses that are thriving and succeeding. You managed to shift your life from being broke, having a wife who’s working as a dog groomer, you were struggling making at home, maybe $20,000-30,000/year doing sub-par, and not feeling very successful. And now, your life has completely shifted.
One of the things that happen with a lot of people is their life shifts, their ideas of success shift as well. So I’m really excited to talk to you about what is the key to success, what success looks like to you, and what is that even mean? What is success for you now?
Dale Partridge
As we graduate high school and getting into our early 20s and we have this version of success that we’ve typically adopted from what we’ve seen in culture and media and maybe those that we’ve looked up to. I think as we get smacked in the face by reality, as we go through relationships, and as we looked in at certain people and go, “Gosh, I don’t like that about you,” and looked at other people and go, “I really admire that person.” It really starts to form in shape what success really looks like and I don’t think that success is very relative.
The key to success is not very specific. I think that there are different channels of success but I think to have it all, if you will. This has been one of my aim on my journey of success is to have it all. Meaning to have strong relationship with my wife, my family, and my kids, to have a really have strong spiritual life that I’m a Christian guy but just to make sure that’s a priority in my life, which suggests that the key to success is a wide term. To make sure I have good reputation, and that I protect that and the day of the internet where the internet never forgets whatever you say can be construed and pushed against you. We got to be very careful to protect our names and our reputation. And then, my physical health, on top of that, my finances. Together, those kinds of things really make up my success and really help in defining the key to success.
You can tell it. I don’t talk about my business. My business is not something that I do and I think it’s fairly successful as a channel but for the most part, I don’t want to become the wealthiest guy that nobody likes. Mere being wealthy is not the key to success. I don’t want to become the guy that got too busy making a living that I forgot to make a life. There are all these puns that I can just keep going with in terms I don’t want to be the richest guy in the graveyard. That’s the life that I want to stay away from and I define the key to success on my own terms.
I might not be the wealthiest guy that you’ve ever meet but my hope is to become one of the most successful people you’ve ever meet.
Reframing the key to success
Kamala Chambers
I love how you’re defining the key to success for us and reframing it because we, the thriving launchers, do talk a lot about how to further your business, how to take it to the next level, how to bring in more financial abundance, and you’re talking about holistic abundance, abundance that comes through your relationships, your passion, your spirituality, and your finances.
Luis Congdon
And what I like about what we’re doing right now Kamala and Dale, is it really fits the integrity of the show because for a while, Thrivinglaunch was just about business and giving people hard lessons about how they can define the key to success on their own terms.
What I mean by hard lessons is very step by step on how to do something, how to find the key to success in business, and now we’ve shifted the show, and all of a sudden, Dale shows up on my radar and I’m thinking, I want to shift the show because entrepreneurs are people that have lives outside of their business and too easy to get overly focused on the business.
What do you do Dale to keep that balance? Do you think balance in life is the key to success? Because success for me is like this circle I saw that I really love and it was like a tire and it had rings. So this big circle, and there were rings that went up until 10 levels. Then it was cut like a pie. One little slice is your family. The other one is your finances and you fill out whatever you rate yourself as. Maybe 10 with family, a 2 with finances, or you’re a 10 with finances, and a 2 in health.
Then what the coach told us is what if this tire isn’t as full as possible in every spectrum. Then you have an uneven tire and you can’t really move the car. How do you keep this balance going for yourself with everything that you’re doing?
Dale Partridge
There’s no shortage of quick tips to the key to success. If you want to know how to do entrepreneurship, that’s super easy. You can go read 8 books, and you know exactly how to start a business. That’s really easy knowledge. What’s not easy is maturity, the ability to make good decisions, discernment, discipline, integrity, and patience. It’s all these virtues if you will. And so it constantly focusing on how do I become more honest, more dependable, more vulnerable, loving, brave, courageous in certain things, and risky.
There are just so many kinds of balances that I’m focusing on and I noticed that the more I focused on those things, the more successful my business becomes.
If you look behind typically every really thriving business, you usually have a really good leader. Sure we hear about all the bad stories as well but for me, I’m not just interested in being a guy who has lots of money and a really great company and just has 2 divorces.
There’s a lot to be said that is a man or a woman can’t take care of their home. How are you expected to lead anybody outside of that? Those are supposed to be the most important people in your life. If you can’t take care of that, how are you going to take care of this business? How are you going to take care of this other important relationships? Sure, those people might be successful for a time but they’re not going to have long-term success. For me, just finding balance is very difficult.
Dale Partridge
You’re extending plates and one plate is about to fall and you got to invest more time there. Then the other plates start to fall and you got to invest some time there.
We live in a world where it says you got to do a ton of stuff that we always have to be busy. We just have to be on every social network. We have to constantly be reading, growing, doing, and showing the world that we’re doing all these things because they need to know. So it’s a very difficult time.
In my opinion, if I had to break it down to two words, it’s priorities and discipline. Discipline for me has always been doing something you don’t necessarily like to achieve something you love. That’s something that I really held onto is that, “I don’t like getting up early in the morning.” I’m not really a morning person. I’m actually a really good night owl but my life this season, doesn’t allow that. So I get up early and I read and I get like yard work done in the morning. I spend quiet time just kind of having that self-time and have time with my kids. I get to make them breakfast every morning and spend time with them.
The key to success in your life and business is how you prioritize things
Dale Partridge
Then the idea of priorities, if you don’t believe your family is more important than your work, then it will show in your actions. It’s just really sad to me when I see people that are just relationally bankrupt but financially wealthy. So I thought what a life that I don’t want. That’s most of these kind of up and coming, hustling, millennial type entrepreneurs that brag about how many hours they work, “I worked 85 hours last week,” and I’m like, “You’re an idiot.” I just look at that then go, “An entrepreneur is someone who learns how to make more money with less time.” So you make a hundred thousand dollars a year and you work 80 hours a week. You have two $50,000 jobs. That’s what you have. If you could make $100,000 a year and you work 5 hours a week, that’s impressive, right?
We don’t start businesses so we can work more. We start businesses so we could work less and have more time to do those things we do love with the people that we do love.
And so I’m just constantly helping people get those priorities straightened because I believe, the key to key success is how you prioritize things and realize what entrepreneurship really is. It’s not about working a ton and working late until the night, that’s not the key to success. That happens every now and then but if that’s your life, you’re not an entrepreneur. You’re an employee at your own company.
Luis Congdon
Kamala, I know you probably feel the same way. As Dale talks, I’m thinking a lot about our interview with Jay Papasan and how he talked about The ONE Thing, and boiling our life down in each category to the one thing where we get the most success and out of everything he said when he did his research and everything he was doing, he’s like, “We’re boiling everything down to simplicity so that we can create more time for family and for being around the people that we love.”
And just to that on a deeper and personal level, Kamala and I just recently took a trip down to Medellin, Columbia. I was adopted when I was 8 years old. Somebody who thriving launches noticed that I was adopted and I went back and reunited with my family and met my father who I’d never met and I just spent nearly 2 months not really working and being engrossed in Latin family. Latin cultures are very about families, gathering of 30-40 people on a regular basis, not once a year, but a few times a month. That’s how prioritizing your relationships becomes the key to success.
Kamala Chambers
Every single day
Luis Congdon
And I feel so much better. I feel so much more loved and whole. This is what I do business for. This is what I do mindfulness practices for. This is what I do everything for so I can feel more at peace and a sense feel like all of me is being maximized.
Dale Partridge
Totally. It sound like a season where you go, “Man, am I recalibrating how I view success?” One of my big goals is that if I could make whatever number it is comfortable and come from me, I’m not talking about millions of dollars, I’m talking about few grand a year but I could have all the time in the world, that is incredible.
So many times I see entrepreneurs who falsely believe that the key to success is making a lot of money, they go, “Oh my gosh, I want to build this multi, multimillion dollar business.” I’m all about it like do it, right? That’s the best part about entrepreneurship and capitalism.
But a million bucks a year is a lot of money. I like to remind people that. That’s a lot of money and there comes a point, at least in my experience when I made a million dollars, I felt like I’m not really motivated to make anymore. At that point, your priorities are really got there.
If you are performance driven and you just want to show off more things to more people and you got to have like the nicer fit. I just question where your heart is and where your motives are and the need to make so much, the key to success lies in between these lines.
Right now, I’m not saying that there’s anything wrong with that. Some companies need to be big but just being contented in that journey is another process and another personal maturity that I think comes along as an entrepreneur especially in the later years as you start to actually make money and be successful. So when I’m listening and you want to give your designer direction, I would tell them that, “Hey, I’m a lifestyle writer” “I’m a personality-based brand,” if you are, “I want this to represent my whole personality not just my product or service.”
Freedom of choice-an integral part of the key to success
Kamala Chambers
Yes. I absolutely agree with this. When I started off online and decided to take my business online, it was because I wanted the lifestyle. I love to travel. I love to be able to work my own hours and work as much as I felt like. I just want to be completely honest and transparent that I did put in some 80 hours/week. I did work really, really hard in the beginning.
And now, our business is at a place that we can take 2 months off and we’re working 5 hours/week and our business is doing better than it has ever done. We enjoy both success and freedom, which we realize are the integral parts of the key to success. I think it can take some time to get there but the important thing that I hear you driving home is the motivation behind it.
Is it really about the money or is it about being able to live the way that you want to live and embody a sense of peace or a sense of happiness and have the time that you want to have for the things that are really important to you. For me, happiness is the key to success.
Dale Partridge
Yes. Absolutely. Freedom is an integral part of the key to success. For us, it was to live on a farm. So we live on a farm in the middle of Oregon and that was our dream and that’s how we want to have that home-based and we wanted the peace, the quiet, the animals, and the big yard. We want those things and to be honest, that’s cheaper than where I came from in Southern California.
For us, my wife and I, we just make decisions based off of what’s the dream, what we really want, and then what’s next. We don’t constantly just end on one dream like,”This is our forever home and this is it.” We stay for a season, for sure, we’re excited to be in the season we’re at now.
One of my favorite quotes is, “You’re not in content if you want change. You’re in content if you can be happy while you wait for that change.” That process for us has been a journey. For us, we want change. We don’t know what that is right now. We’ve been here for a few years. We plan on hoping to be here for another 3, 4, or 5 years, who knows? But the idea is that we want change and I think that’s important to give permission to people, to have that change like to desire it. Even when you get to the top of that mountain, don’t just sit there, enjoy it for a season and then figure out what’s next. What else are you going to build? What else are you going to do? What else can you add?
We got work to do. We are entrepreneurs. We are creators, right? And we define the key to success on our own terms.
Dale Partridge
And it took me a long time to get that idea where I was constantly 10 steps ahead anywhere I was standing and I was never happy with where I was at.
That’s another thing that performance addiction comes with as an entrepreneur. We have a lot of these people who are broken and trying to prove themselves and get to be valuable or get that affirmation that they desperately need to say that they’re worthy. A lot of those people get that from whatever brokenness of their past but they try to show it through their work, “Oh! Look how great I am!” “Look how famous I am!” “Look how smart I am” “Look how wealthy I am.”
I’ve been there. That’s the reason I could talk about that. That’s the journey. It’s one of the biggest drivers out there but I think as we mature and grow, and realize that’s not really stuff that matters. That’s my own brokenness and I need to be healed from that. You take time to look into that and the need to maybe get right with God or I need to have a serious conversation with my wife. Those things I think we avoid to talk about but I’m telling you.
