I’m on the road this week. Off in the wilds of Eastern Idaho helping out and letting my kids play in the snow for a weekend.
It’s been pleasant. The stress of day to day has dropped aside temporarily and the girls have relaxed. And its given me enough time to to breath… and consider.
And of course that has lead to a little different approach to recording tonight. I’m sitting here recording with my portable microphone as the wind howling and snow on the way
Between helping and card games with the girls I had more time to process than I have had in a long long time

I have to say hearing the phrase “well it’s the new normal” makes me want to scream. Not sure why. Welcome back to Season 2. A few weeks ago I road tripped into Oregon for the first time in over a year. It gave me an opportunity to look at things through new eyes because while Oregon borders on Idaho… they tend to be very different places at the heart. In a previous bonus episode I touched on some the high quality beverages that seem to be everywhere in Oregon , today I thought it would be appropriate to touch on another ubiquitous Oregon business: The dispensaries:
Because while I’m not in the least bit interested in marijuana (and in fact it is one of those things that could get me fired) I would like to acknowledge the creativity that can be seen just outside these establishments.

Welcome to the Strive Seek Find Podcast. I’m your host Chance Whitmore. A lot happened this week. Early birthdays, concerts, and work accelerating towards a “slowdown” and more. It was a long busy week and I regret nothing though admittedly my rear is dragging. In the process I ran across a couple opportunities to watch experts in their field work their magic. It reminded me of something I had told a friend: 90% of my job is invisible unless you know the job (admittedly there were major caveats in this case).
And if you really think about it, for the most part we have a narrow world view when it comes to one another here are just a few examples.

Welcome to the Strive Seek Find Podcast. I’m your host Chance Whitmore. The old Proverb “timing is everything” has more uses than any of us can count. Oftentimes it ends up sounding as cliché as the related “Strike while the iron is hot” Funny thing about clichés though , many of them end up being overused in great part because they have a elements of truth in them. In the past week I had the opportunity to learn this again when I was put in a situation where the right message was not enough. Having the right message at the right time was critical.

What I didn’t go for was to hear people lectured about why their beliefs were a recipe for an express elevator to hell. Well this got me thinking as I wandered and things got worse. How so? Well let’s get started and find out

Welcome to a very special bonus episode of Strive Seek Find: Its spring time. days are getting longer and finally warmer. Its time for a crisp refreshing go to drink. Last year during quarantine I worked on my recipe slowly lowering the citrus and growing my appreciation of different gin. We are dialed in…. and then my culinary Jedi master, Alton Brown informed me… there is more. So tonight we are experimenting with my gin tonic recipe and share the results.

I’m good at reminding others to take care of themselves. I’m less good at actually doing it myself. I know that this probably holds true for many of us. Right now, as we are continuing to grind through a world that is still in flux, taking care of yourself is mission critical. So as we begin to move toward summer, its important to remind us all of a few parts of this… and hopefully just hopefully make taking care of ourselves feel slightly less shameful.

. One of the things that I remember quite well from last year at this time was how energetic and productive I was. The garden boxes , the the table, the yard and garden were done and incredible shape. The universe was making things difficult, but I was personally kicking a little ass.
But life is a marathon, not a sprint. And that manic energy, at least in my case has waned as pandemic time has marched on.
I keep looking at things and thinking: I should have this done. I should be further down the road on that.
And I come back around to I’m so damn tired.

We all have our reasons for doing things. At times we don’t truly recognize it ourselves. Even when we are acting at what seems to be our most altruistic there are often elements of selfishness inherently built in to our actions. Most of the time it may not matter as long as the “good gets done” At other times, those bits of selfishness, whether they are unconscious or not can cause real damage. Today we are going to touch on both factors while looking at somethings I observed this week at a youth football game

Welcome to the Strive Seek Find Podcast, I’m Chance Whitmore. on some level it would be nice if TRUTH was a capital T ruth rather than something we need to dig into to discover. And with the 24 hour news cycle (which is more interested in being first and interesting rather than accurate), social media (speaking of interesting over accurate… easy of spreading inaccuracy and lets not forget bot accounts!) Being credulous has become extremely dangerous. And while there are more ways to create and spread misinformation, Fake news and propaganda than I can count at this point, I’m going to something I’ve been wanting to do since before I thought of this podcast: start the discussion. In this case digging into the very beginnings at the subject of DoubleSpeak. For no other reason that words have been weaponized against thinking and only by looking seriously at it can we fix this.

Dichotomies fascinate me. Right now it seems to me that are living in culture that seems to be made up of almost nothing else. Part of this can be but down to the shift nature of our culture. Some of it is me noticing things that were already there, but the ways the puzzle pieces continue to change and yet still slide together is just short of a miracle. Today I thought I’d look briefly at one of these contrasts; how subcultures cannibalize the very people they should be supporting.

. The last year travel, especially travel to see family has been severely curtailed foremost of us. My family had camped and road tripped in our area of the state while keeping to isolation last summer—but it has been months of a dry spell in travel. This week changed that. Spring break started. My wife and I are a month past our second vaccination and my parents have also been vaccinated. So we made a weekend run for the first time in a year.
It turns out travel is like anything else. If you are not doing it, you get rusty. As I learned to my chagrin .

Once again changes are in the air. Our friendly neighborhood Global pandemic seems to be fading black. There's a feeling that normal Is right around the corner., or at least a less stressful version of now; which will slow congeal into a new normal. But today I thought it might be fun to mention some of the things we learned during the pandemic that I would like to hold on to even as things "normal" returns as well as what I'd like to get back to as the world reopens.

If you have ever turned on the radio while driving with your kids to sports talk mind you, and had the first phrase involve arrest during an orgy; you know exactly how fast you can truly move. Yeah. That happened about week ago. Not my proudest hour, but it has put me in a mind set where it made me think about my commute a bit and how it impacts my 10 and 4 year old as they consume media along side me. Whether it is podcasts or sports radio or even music… I realized I was less aware and careful of this media than I am of others they consume.

Failure. A word with so many uses. From machine breakage “critical failure of a key component”, to grades “ you failed the class”, it often used as a word to mark as an end rather than any sort of opportunity for growth. So while I have been processing this in my own life I thought I’d share what I hope is a healthy perspective.

And as a staunch believer that Whiskey should be consumed neat this has been a bit of a struggle for me. With most of us safe at home for Valentine’s day this year, we thought this would be a way to spruce up your holiday at home. Nostalgia is a tricky thing. You find something you once loved and your growth has the potential to ruin what you most like as you look back and see not what you loved about it , but what you realize is wrong with it. It can be little things like realizing how poorly written a favorite story or movie really was. Or it can be oh so much more. Today I thought I might walk the path of ‘oh so much more with a favorite from my childhood, the science fiction hero Buck Rogers.

Welcome to the Strive Seek Find Podcast, I’m Chance Whitmore. Last week due to my job I had the opportunity to get the first dose of my Covid vaccination. It brought back a question that I have been asking myself on and off for a while now. What responsibility do we have for our fellow man? Just a small question. To start your day with.. Roll it around in your brain. What do you owe the people around us? What do they owe us?

I’ve been feeling a bit locked in as of late between work, projects, and family illness (thankfully not Covid) and we have been a bit more “about the house” than I would have preferred the last few months. Last weekend that changed. Not to the extent I really planned, but a winter road trip adventure . It was just what the doctor ordered for me and more importantly, for the family.

Has anyone else noticed that that as a society we have seen a shift toward wealth as the main definition of accomplishment and from achievement to building a brand? Its very much a “we to me” approach that doesn’t necessarily fit with people growing anything more than a bank account. Why did we make that switch? Why is accomplishment viewed as transactional? What has happened to aspiration and inspiration?

Even without major personal tragedy (which there has been more than enough of for one year), there are few people who haven’t struggled getting through this year. Or
The tendency to not move or change

Welcome to the Strive Seek Find Podcast. I’m Chance Whitmore. So this week brought one of those shocks to the system. A gut punch of sorts that makes you do some self-evaluation. The event, well that’s not my story to tell. Its sufficient to say that this week I got to watch a family’s life to ripped to shreds in such a way that they will never be able to pull the remains into a cohesive whole. And yet I’m not here today to talk about grief. There are so many people that can speak to that more than I.
After the better part of a week of reflection. I find myself back to the simplest of conclusions.
We overlook and ignore the most important things in our life as we are distracted by the world at large.
So today I bring you a simple reminder: Fix it before its too late.

Last year at this time I was trying to pull together a trip to DC for my family—COVID was not on our radar. We took them to see an acrobatic troupe at the local college and took them to hear an Irish band visiting our town. It started out awesome and then, canceled. So today I’d thought about the importance of Seeking new experiences out and even how to do it during Covid.

All that's natural, but today we will discuss adversity and the opportunity that flows from it.

Perfection. We are supposed to seek it, to work toward it find ways to make it happen. Who set that bar? Realistically… Perfect rarely happens outside of a computer model. And yet most of us have cut our teeth on chasing perfection. In the last six month that drive has been upended as people were dumped out of their comfort zones, their status quo disrupted, home lives brought to the forefront. We are now experiencing a special level of stress. Normally competent people prepandemic are experiencing a crisis of identity as they struggle to complete normal tasks and are distressed when their product is far less than perfect. Over the past few years it has felt like we have seen people become more entrenched and inflexible in their thinking. Stuck in belief even when faced with overwhelming proof to the contrary. It is an understatement to say that it makes things frustrating. Whether we are talking Flat earth, science denier, people who learned history from Wolfenstein games or any of the other nuttiness that seems to be pervading the Internet. it becomes easy to believe that this is a new problem… that we were smarter in the past, but if you truly look back…. That may not necessarily be the truth So today I’m stepping back in time and looking at 4 examples of times people held on to wacky beliefs.

When we first went to stay at home here I had a great deal of nervous energy. Sleep was a distant memory and “time away from work” was only a theoretical since work and home existed in the same space. I’m sure many of you have similar stories. This created a surge of nervous energy as I started to figure out exactly how to separate the two parts of life… and the on deal with the unknowns we were all facing. I hit anything from honey dos to new challenges., My wife baked and started making masks. Both came from a similar place. Stress from unknown and loss of “normal”. Putting these projects into action kept us balanced in an uncertain world and their results are nice touch stone of the last months… in success, failure and any lessons I may have learned. After all its important to practice what you preach.

Professional writers fascinate me. The focus and dedication they show to their craft. The creative grind. It is something that I would like to experience at some point in my life, but they tend to be a different breed. JMS, Gaiman,, and others weave dreams for the rest of us to enjoy. To me that is an amazing thing. Sometimes we don’t get what we want from these situations. Sometimes an author stamps complete on a work in such a way that we don’t necessarily get the next part of the dream. S. Today we are going to address on of those times: Why George R. R. We are rapidly heading into fall and that means a change in our activities. Well at least it normally does. Despite our attempts to return to normal, so many of the touchstone that we use to mark the passage of time or to create entertainment or distraction are altered or lost for the time being For me the fall has traditionally represented a change in focus My old school love of football… even after 14 years out of coaching I still fell the sport tug at me. Fall represents time to chase football, High school FB on Friday nights. College on Saturday… and of course watching as much Eagles football as I can on Sunday…. Movies or plays to fill in the gaps… a shift from outdoor runaways And as things stand right now… all those are not going to look like that traditionally have… HS football no fans… College football social distancing… NFL same…. And that is assuming we have those at all. So today I’m going to offer some alternatives to your normal fall . For our sanity’s sake we need to change things up a bit.
