At the end of August, I was one of the featured speakers at the Purposeful You online summit. My topic was that we have one life to live today. And my presentation was, as expected, about how important our stories are – but even more crucial, is that we never know just how much time we have to capture those stories – our own, those of our grandparents and parents and other significant mentors in our lives, and those of our families. Here is that presentation.

“Life is amazing.  And then it’s awful.  And then it’s amazing again.  And in between the amazing and awful it’s ordinary and mundane and routine.  Breathe in the amazing, hold on through the awful and relax and exhale during the ordinary.  That’s just living heartbreaking, soul-healing, amazing, awful, ordinary life.  And it’s breathtaking beautiful.” – L.R. Welcome to the Epic Exchanges Nature and Nurture Project where Kelly shares some of the personal stories and people that shaped who she is today.  The purpose of this project is to demonstrate that we are a complex combination of both nature and nurture - and discover what makes us who we are today.

Exchange Quote:“The phrase ‘nature and nurture’ is a convenient jingle of words, for it separates under two distinct heads the innumerable elements of which personality is composed.  Nature is all that [we] bring into the world; nurture is every influence that affects [us] after birth.”  Francis Galton

Are you aware that many of the beliefs you hold about other people are mainly the result of stereotypes that you have gathered over the years from family, friends, media and in other unexpected ways.  However, the answer to breaking down these stereotypes is actually easier than we think.  That’s what we’re going to talk about today.

Exchange Quotes:

“We all use stereotypes, all the time, without knowing it.  We have met the enemy of equality, and the enemy is us.” – Annie Murphy Paul

“A stereotype may be negative or positive, but even positive stereotypes present two problems: they are clichés, and they present a human being as far more simple and uniform than any human being actually is.” – Nancy Kress

What are the costs of the past year in your life?  How much have you lost?  Income?  A job?  Freedom?  Social functions on the calendar?  Vacations? Celebrations?  Maybe pets or people you cared about?  This pandemic has taken a lot from us all.  But what has it left you with?  That’s our topic for today.

Exchange Quotes:

“Taking chances is scary but there is something that should scare you far more than anything: missing out on something truly wonderful because you were scared.” – Katherine Matheson

“For a long time, it seemed to me that life was about to begin – real life.  But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be gotten through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid.  At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life.  This perspective has helped me to see there is no way to happiness.  Happiness is the way.  So treasure every moment you have and remember that time waits for no one.” - Souza

Our ability to communicate well has become more important than ever during a time when we can’t gather together in person.  Seeing someone on a screen or listening to them through a phone is only part of all the ways we learn about and understand one another.  Add in different communication styles and the possibility of being misunderstood goes up exponentially.  This week we welcome author Angel Baney to the podcast to talk about how understanding HOW we communicate is a huge piece of the puzzle.

We, as a society, tend to put a lot of labels and expectations on others based on a small piece of information we may have about someone.  That small bit of knowledge can change how we feel in an instant. However, it’s only a label.  A small piece of the whole.  Like chocolate chips alone don’t make a cookie.  When we buy into these labels, we can create a significant disconnect between our expectations and the reality.  Learn how to change that in this week’s podcast.

One of the greatest ways we can experience self-discovery and find out more about ourselves is to travel alone.  We need to free ourselves of the constant bombardment of outside influences that make up our day-to-day life.  And staying at home and turning off the computer or phone won’t do it.  Because all we have to do is look around and see the laundry or the cleaning or any number of those things on our ‘to do’ lists.  Find out more on this week’s podcast.

Milestones are markers of significant events or stages in our lives, development or progress.

Today we take it for granted much of the time that we can see history being made in real time thanks to the internet.  But 50 years ago it was a big deal when the Apollo 11 moon landing was being reported live on television as it happened.  People around the world remember where they were when they heard the announcements or saw the footage cross their screens.  Why should we celebrate milestones of any kind?

This week we continue our discussion from the last episode about the importance of real connecting – and how we’re missing so many opportunities because of our attachment to technology – in particular our smartphones.  One of the problems we face is that the phones and apps that are created for them (and for our tablets and laptops and computers) – all that technology – are actually created to facilitate addiction.  Making us dependent on that digital world, and in effect, making us tune out from the world right in front of us.  So what can we do about it?  We can unplug or disconnect.  Here’s how.

An Epic Exchange is any interaction where one or more people come away feeling inspired, encouraged, motivated or even transformed and healed in some way.  This could include a conversation with a friend or relative, learning from a speaker on stage, in a podcast or a teacher in a class or workshop, or even something you take away from watching a documentary, movie or other program. It can also be found in music.  And that’s what we’re going to talk about this week – how music matters not only in conveying our stories, but in connecting with them in ways that inspire, encourage, motivate and yes, even heal each one of us.

Exchange Quotes:

“Like jazz, stories are meant to be heard, to strike resonant chords in our hearts or rumble down deep in our gut.  Soul music.  Melodies and words about what matters.” – Martta Karol

“Music is what feelings sound like out loud.  I sing songs that speak from my heart.  They tell my story, how I feel.” – Georgia Cates

In some way, we have all experienced something that has left us broken.  Nobody is immune. Many of the people you come across each day could very well have walked through something just as challenging.  Or are doing so right now.

While your experiences may be different from anyone else you might know, that doesn’t necessarily make them worse – or better.  Just different.  But it’s because of these difficulties and experiences that we learn something about ourselves and we generally come out stronger, wiser and, ultimately, better than before.

Stress as we know it today is actually derived from the word distress and refers to great pain, anxiety, sorry, bother, worry or trouble – either physical or mental in nature and our body’s response to these charged situations.

In most of the westernized world today stress has become an epidemic with approximately 75% of adults between the ages of 20 and 64 reporting some level of stress – and somewhere between 25 and 35% reporting extreme stress on a regular basis.  This is so prevalent that the World Health Organization has declared stress as THE health epidemic of the 21st century.

Exchange Quotes:

“In times of stress, the best thing we can do for each other is to listen with our ears and our hearts and to be assured that our questions are just as important as our answers.” – Fred Rogers

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” – Fred Rogers

When we hear the word reunion, we think about school reunions – either high school or college/university; we think about family reunions, maybe even reunions of the casts of our favourite television shows.  Some we think of more fondly than others – and some maybe come with a level of anxiety or tension because of difficult memories or relationships or maybe feeling as though we haven’t accomplished quite what we wanted or we don’t look the same as we did. So why do we even go?

Exchange Quotes:

“But every memory of friendship shared, even for a short time, is a treasure, like sunshine and warmth in our lives, like a cool breeze on a humid day, like a shower of rain refreshing the earth.” - Unknown

“When you remember me, it means that you have carried something of who I am with you, that I have left some mark of who I am on who you are. What does it mean to be present?  At its most basic, it means that your awareness is completely centered on the here and now.  You are not worrying about the future, or thinking about the past.  It means you have your focus, your attention, your thoughts and your feelings – all your energy – on what is happening in the here and now.  If you are having a conversation, then your focus is on the person you are with and what they are saying.  If you are at work, you are completely dedicated to the task in front of you in that moment.

Exchange Quotes:

“The present moment is the only moment available to us, and it is the door to all moments.” – Thich Nhat Hanh

“If you must look back, do so forgivingly.  If you must look forward, do so prayerfully.  However, the wisest things you can do is be present in the present.  Gratefully.”  Maya Angelou

We all have expectations – both for ourselves and our future and also for others and their behaviour or reactions towards us.  And when we place expectations around wanting our own stories to ‘measure up’ to one someone else shared or be as impactful or whatever we tell ourselves it NEEDS to be – then we set ourselves up for either never being ready to share or always feeling that our story – or stories aren’t good enough to share. That’s the problem with having expectations – we set ourselves up for a fall or for disappointment.

“When one’s expectations are reduced to zero, one really appreciates everything one does have.” Stephen Hawking

One of the biggest stumbling blocks we face when coming to terms with our own stories is a pervasive undercurrent of guilt.  Many of the events in our lives – particularly the difficult ones – come with a lot of self-judgment.  Of the things we could or should have done or said to ensure a different outcome.  Of the words we left unsaid before a loved ones passing.  Of the calls we didn’t make to mend a broken relationship with a friend.  When the guilt is there under the surface, it makes finding and claiming the lesson in our story more difficult.  And we get stuck in a never-ending circle.

Exchange Quotes:

“True guilt is guilt at the obligation one owes to oneself to be oneself.  False guilt is guilt felt at not being what other people feel one ought to be or assume that one is.” R.D. Laing

“Guilt arises out of your past beliefs.  But beliefs are merely acquired ideas.  There is not ultimate truth to a belief.  This simple understanding liberates you of guilt.” - Sen

The desire to be perfect not only traps and burdens us with stress, it can often keep us from moving forward with our goals and dreams.  And often we get ‘stuck’ in finding and telling our own stories because we want to find the perfect words or the perfect way to tell it. Then we keep putting it off – procrastinating – or even continually comparing our stories to those of others and feeling that we’re just not good enough.  Well that’s just not true.  Let’s talk about this idea of perfection.

Exchange Quotes:

“Perfectionism is not the same thing as striving to be our best.  Perfectionism is not about healthy achievement and growth; it’s a shield.” – Brené Brown

“Don’t let perfectionism become an excuse for never getting started.” – Marilu Henner

There are all kinds of struggles in life – emotional, physical, financial, relational – add your own to the list.  But there are also lessons in these struggles.  Lessons that we can take from our own difficulties to help others so they don’t have to flounder the same way we did – or even to give them the added encouragement to keep going through the hard times.

Today’s guest, Cara Czarnecki, was a single mom, struggling to make ends meet while trying to keep any financial worry or fear from having an effect on her children. She shares her own story with us and how it inspired her to help others.

Exchange Quotes:

“It’s never too late to be what you might have been.” – George Eliot

“Most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years.” – Bill Gates

We all go through difficult times in our lives.  Times where we struggle to see anything positive in our situation, where even sometimes that proverbial ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ is so faint we doubt that it is there. Times where all we want to do is find an answer to whatever our current problem might be – and sometimes, that answer takes us somewhere even more difficult.

Today’s guest, Jessica Pumple, faced a time like this in her life as well.  And when she made it out of that dark place, it helped her find her passion.

Exchange Quotes:

“Sometimes we fall down because there’s something we’re supposed to find.” - Unknown

“Life’s challenges are not supposed to paralyze you; they’re supposed to help you discover who you are.” – Bernice Johnson Reagon

In this week’s exchange, we talk about self-acceptance and how this can have an effect on your story. How often do we consider our relationship with ourselves?  How much time and effort do we put in to our own self-acceptance even?  How many of us can honestly say we’ve come to a place where we love ourselves – warts and all?

Exchange Quotes:

“What self-acceptance does is open up more possibilities of succeeding because you aren’t fighting yourself along the way.” – Shannon Ables

“Option A: Spend your life trying to get others to accept you.  Option B: Accept yourself, and spend your life with others who recognize what a beauty you are.” – Scott Stabile

Most people don’t talk about mental illness.  But the numbers speak volumes about the urgent need for action and acceptance. Mental health affects us all - whether world-class athlete, Oscar-winning actor, Grammy-winning musician, political leader, CEO, stay-at-home mom, or student.  All ages, education or income levels and cultures.

This episode of Epic Exchanges provides tips and tricks for managing our own mental health and wellness and adding our efforts to help end the stigma surrounding mental health issues.

Few people start out with the intention of changing the world with their ideas or dreams.  Most of us simply want to change something in our immediate vicinity and then the dream grows wings and the idea takes hold.

Why?  Quite simply because our best ideas are shared.  Shared ideas ignite passion and motivate involvement.  As evidenced by Dr. King’s story; his ideas, passion and motivation helped ignite an entire country – even the world – to work through boundaries, walls and established thinking and practices to advocate for a better world.

Exchange Quotes:

“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” – Eleanor Roosevelt

“You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.  I hope someday you’ll join us.  And the world will live as one.” – John Lennon

One of the things that many people struggle with is where to start in telling their story. It can feel overwhelming because we often think we need to start from the beginning and tell it chronologically. That’s just not the case.

In this week’s Exchange, we share 3 tips around overcoming the roadblocks to telling our stories and give some prompts to get you started on your own. Because nobody can tell your story better than you yourself can.

Exchange Quotes:

“A day will come when the story inside you will want to breathe on its own. That’s when you will start writing.” – Sarah Noffke

“You own everything that happened to you. Tell your stories. If people wanted you to write warmly about them, they should have behaved better.” – Anne Lamott

“Ever read someone’s story and think, ‘this is exactly what I needed to hear today?’ Your story will do that for someone else.” – Anonymous

In this week’s exchange, we talk about resolutions – particularly New Year’s Resolutions – and whether or not they can have an effect on your story.

A New Year’s resolution is a promise a person makes for the new year.  Regardless of what resolution – or resolutions – you decide upon, the goal is to improve your life in some way in the coming year.

Resolutions look different for everyone.  For some it’s quitting a bad habit like smoking or (quite likely these days) limiting refined sugar in our diets.  For others, it’s focusing on putting better habits into place – like an exercise program or a more organic diet.

Exchange Quotes:

“Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new ending.” Carl Bard

“The greatest discovery of all time is that a person can change his future by merely changing his attitude.” – Oprah Winfrey

Many of our modern celebrations and customs – and even the WAYS in which we celebrate any special day on the calendar – are rooted in tradition.  Tradition is defined as the transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation, or the fact of being passed on in this way.

And each family has its own ways – or traditions – of celebrating every holiday, but especially Christmas.  Have you ever wondered how these started?  Or who started them?

These can be the source for finding part of your own story.

Exchange Quotes:

“It takes an endless amount of history to make even a little tradition.” – Henry James

“The most treasured heirlooms are the sweet memories of our family that we pass down to our children.” – Unknown

Over the past few weeks, we’ve discussed recognizing and dealing with our own anger towards ourselves and others; and we’ve learned about the power of forgiveness to help us let go of that anger and any other negative emotions keeping us from living a life filled with more peach and happiness. In both exchanges, we talked about empathy being a strong piece of being able to have more understanding around the roots of the anger and hurt. Today, we dig deeper into what empathy is and how we can encourage it in our own lives as we welcome Sarah Michelle Brown, writer and director for film and stage.

Exchange Quotes:

“I think we all have empathy. We may not have enough courage to display it.” – Maya Angelou

“Empathy is seeing with the eyes of another, listening with the ears of another and feeling with the heart of another.” – Alfred Adler

At this time of year, Thanksgiving week in the United States, and the start of the holiday season – Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, whatever your belief, it’s a time acknowledging our blessings, exchanging gifts, gathering friends and family together, celebration.

But what about when we are alone?  When there is nothing to celebrate?  When we experience loss or pain or something else equally as devastating or tragic?  How do we find gratitude then?

Researchers have proven the benefits of intentional gratitude.  That it lowers stress, promotes better sleep, increases kindness and compassion, leads to a greater sense of calm and even strengthens our immune systems.

Exchange Quotes:

“I’ve come to believe that living in gratitude is the gateway to grace.” – Ariana Huffington

“Develop an attitude of gratitude, and give thanks for everything that happens to you, knowing that every step forward is a step toward achieving something bigger and better than your current situation.” – Brian Tracy

Forgiveness, as opposed to revenge, is the act of releasing the desire to punish someone – or even yourself – for an offense.  It does not mean that you forget it and move on.  It also doesn’t mean that the other is absolved of their actions.

Instead, it is choosing to release the desire for punishment or revenge.  And it is only in this release that we can once again find peace of mind, and even happiness.

But practicing forgiveness is not easy, nor is it quick.  This exchange discusses the benefits and importance of forgiveness – both for others and for ourselves.

Exchange Quotes:

“To forgive is to set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner was you.” – Lewis B. James

“When you forgive, you in no way change the past – but you sure do change the future.” – Bernard Meltzer

The dictionary defines anger as “a strong feeling of being upset or annoyed because of something wrong or bad.  The feeling that makes someone want to hurt other people, to shout, or be unpleasant.”  It is an intense expression of emotion.

There are many reasons we experience anger.  To harm oneself or another, for control, to feel powerful, to fight injustice, and many more.

So how do we deal with our anger in a healthy way that allows us to move forward with peace and happiness in our lives?

Exchange Quotes:

“For every minute you remain angry, you give up sixty seconds of peace of mind.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Holding on to anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” – Buddha

We all judge – whether we do so intentionally or not.  It’s due to our innate need to immediately classify anything new we come into contact with as friend or foe, safe or poisonous.  In the early days of humankind, this helped us survive.  But we all have a story – things going on in our lives that aren’t visible from the outside, so often those micro-judgments are incorrect.  So how do we put those initial judgments aside?

Exchange Quotes:

“There’s a story behind every person.  There’s a reason why they’re the way they are.  They aren’t just like that because they want to be.  Something in the past created them, and sometimes it’s impossible to fix.” – Hanny Quinn

“Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.” - Socrates

Have you ever had one (or more) of those days where you just feel brain dead by 4pm?  Or you get home from work or school or all the activities that fill your day and you just can’t imagine making another meal.  Or cleaning up the kitchen.  Or doing laundry.  You’re ready to binge the latest Netflix hit.  You just don’t want to have to make another decision or even think!

But this is often because we forget the importance of what we hear every flight attendant say: Secure your own oxygen mask first before helping anyone else who may need it.

We need to learn to give ourselves permission to rest.  Because it’s only in rest that we can refresh, rejuvenate and actually be more effective and more productive.

Exchange Quotes:

“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes…even you.” – Anne Lamott

“There is virtue in work and there is virtue in rest.  Use both and overlook neither.” – Alan Cohen
