In this episode, Bryce explains what "gaslighting" is, how to spot it, and how to confront it in a partnership. This communication style can be deeply damaging to the emotional safety in a relationship and most people don't even know that they are doing it. At it's core, it is a way to distort someone's reality enough to assume psychological control over them. If you've ever felt put down, belittled, or made to feel stupid, this may be the definition that you have been looking for.
If you are interested in taking your relational learning and practice a step further, you can visit Jenny and I at:

Level 2 - Problem Use
Level 3 - Chronic Abuse

In this episode, Bryce explains why we get upset over small things. Reactions can wreak havoc on relationships when they are not understood properly. It may be true that you're "just tired" or your partner isn't appreciating you but what's probably more true is you are protecting yourself by lashing out or shutting down. Once you get to the core of your issue, you will naturally relax and you will be able to assist your partner in helping you instead of expecting them to know what to do. Bryce also touches on how to find the right couples coach/therapist and why progress tends to be much slower without seeking any help.

Judgments usually stick because they are only looked at from one angle. You judge people through the lens by which you judge yourself or through the story that fits your narrative of that person. By looking at your partner as a mirror instead of a dead end, you can continue to grow and develop more parts of yourself that you are unable to see without their reflection. Many different processes use this same concept that I've dubbed "The Mirror". If you are holding onto any resentments or judgments of your partner, this is the perfect exercise for you to learn.

In this episode, we discuss the delicate balance of working with "thirds" while maintaining the security of a primary partnership. "Thirds" can be defined as people or things outside of the relationship, such as kids, parents, in-laws, co-workers, social gatherings, religion, work, etc. There is a fantasy that all of these outside relationships can be managed on the same plane but, this is simply not true. There is always a hierarchy of attention we are forced to work with and we need to be on the same page with our partner in order to confront these situations skillfully. Do you know where you and your relationship stands when it comes to interactions with "thirds"?

In this episode, Bryce explains how the cognitive mechanisms that serve us in some ways, also cause distorted projections of our partner. We are relational beings that are in constant conversation with ourselves. This is a quick and informative episode for those who like to geek out on the more "scientific" side of relationships. Enjoy!

What I would really love to know ifs what a healthy relationship with money would look like from the perspective of abundance and flow? I notice that I spend money in weird ways and get really caught up in buying things if they are on sale. My basic question is what are the basics when it comes to the psychology of money? Listen in to see how this can actually keep you from the connection you want. And listen in as Bryce and Jenny discuss a listener's question.
QUESTION:
"After going through a divorce & being single for going on two years now. I am thinking of dating again (and after going through 3 years of counseling. Was going before, during and after the divorce). I have a friend that I adore and would like to date but I don't know how to approach him. He is also divorced and doesn't have a girlfriend. Do I drop a hint? He isn't into games or drama - same as me Do I tell him I'm interested in dating or more than just friendship? I'm not sure how to get out of the friend zone. Also, I live in Florida and he lives in Texas."

In today's podcast Jenny talks about the podcast name change, and together Bryce & Jenny answer this question:
"I found myself in past holding back on more open communication with my spouse. When I realized my reluctance to communicate on some things, especially ideas, I noticed that I wanted more encouragement and support than what my spouse would offer.
I am a riskier taker (I take more risks), and am more anxious to explore new adventures that would definitely require change. My spouse has been more risk adverse, and not as anxious to change comfortable situations.
Rather than keeping my ideas (many hair-brained) to myself, do you have any suggestions for ways I might better communicate, openly and less fearfully?"

Today Jenny answer's a listener question about ways to connect other than Sex. Jenny took the liberty to discuss other concerns she, Jenny, experienced while reading this question.
QUESTION:
My husband and I have been married nearly 10 years. I have never felt comfortable around him. There is always a sense of anxiety associated with his presence. I try to talk to him about a lot of things. It doesn’t seem like he listens and responds with either a disagreement about what I said or a short response. He tells me the only way he knows how to connect is if he has sex first. This makes Sex seem like a chore or obligation which is a big turnoff. If we aren’t having sex regularly (twice a week or so) he really shuts down and our conversations go from awkward to non existent.
I want to feel connected and comfortable in our home. What are some other ways to connect other than having sex, which to me is just about keeping the peace.
END OF QUESTION.

In today's episode, Jenny and Bryce answer a question about how to navigate a partner's way of dealing with anger.
THE QUESTION:
"When my partner and I argue, things quickly escalate and he raises his voice at me. It triggers me and reminds me of my dad growing up who yelled a lot. I often tell him to calm down. Sometimes he says that he's allowed to be angry. And I agree, but the ways in which he has expressed it (yelling, name calling, punching holes in doors, smashing a phone, etc.) do not feel safe to me. This hasn't happened often but enough to make me feel untrusting and unsafe. What does healthy expression of anger in men look and sound like to you? How can I encourage healthy expression of anger, tolerate a man's feelings and not feel overwhelmed by them and still have my own back? I don't want to walk on eggshells anymore and want to take responsibility for my sense of safety in a relationship. I don't want to tolerate this behavior, but don't want to stifle someone's self expression in the process."

In today's episode Jenny offers some ideas to a caring father who wonders how he can better communicate and support his son in creating more meaning.
QUESTION:
"I currently have a situation with one of my adult children that requires some life coaching. He is currently 28, financially independent, and single. He dates a lot but has not seemed to have found a meaningful relationship. We obviously know our children well and like to help with some "life coaching," but often we are biased and don't understand (or accept) the mindset of the so called "millennial" mindset.
My son has done fairly well in his career since graduating from college. He sells commercial real estate in Los Angeles. He has also suffered from bouts of anxiety and I think some depression. He has sought out some help, but nothing I would call a "full effort."
He is very social, likes to go out, hit the night clubs, and has the social media habits of many others like him. From my perspective, he parties too much. I think it messes with his chemical balance.
He has found in the last few years a love of travel. He is currently taking Spanish lessons, and spent time in Mexico City, Spain, Cuba and Columbia in the past 1.5 years.
He is now considering a "career change." He is applying to an MBA program at Thunderbird in International business. He claims to be "unenthused" with his current career and believes he needs to change. While I support this career introspection, I think if he does not properly assess his current "whole" picture of his life, and meaning, he will not be happy with his next choice either - we are just in for a repeat.
How do my wife and I communicate or direct him to get some meaningful "objective" life direction before he makes major decisions. How can we direct him to the best information?"

QUESTION:
My husband has gone through a faith transition. It’s been taking place for over 3 years but the family was told almost a year ago. My husband feels very alone. But so do I. He thinks I have the church as a community to help me but no one in our ward knew. And even since telling our family I still don’t talk much with them about it. They don’t know what I’m going through. My husband and I have always relied on each other for support and to talk things out. We have rarely argued let alone had major differences. So this transition has been extremely difficult. I thought I was supporting him. But he just told me that I have NEVER understood and that we have NEVER been able to talk about “this"...meaning religion, his views??
It was heartbreaking for me because I thought we were in a good place. So he had gone to several different Facebook pages to find comfort and acceptance. I tried to join one (with his disapproval) just so I could try to relate and find perspective from his side. Well last week he wrote a poem to the group using words like “exactly one year ago” “No one”, “never or ever” in regards to his family, friends and ward members asking him why he left and understanding him. I was so hurt for a couple reasons.
First; he didn’t talk to me about his feelings at all before posting. Second; he could’ve posted to another group that is for our mixed faith marriage but instead posted to a group who is only to people who have left our church. Which I find very one sided. I also feel like by post there he was putting down or not recognizing any of my efforts. Which leaves me feeling betrayed and on the outside of his life. Third; when I asked him about it trying to show him comfort and asking why he was feeling like this he blew me off then got upset which lead to an argument in front of our 17 year old and 22 years old children. Which then they became part of the “conversation”. Fourth; I worry he will now find other people to comfort him which to me is an emotional affair. This is my biggest fear! Any kind of affair.
So my very long comment leads to these questions:
Is it ok, normal, healthy to go to outside sources? Where do you draw the line on what to vent to people who don’t know your family or situation?
My husband doesn’t want to talk about religion because it usually ends up with hurt feelings. I thought we were doing better but after this last argument I’m feeling so lonely, defeated and hurt. Is it best not to talk about these things? I just feel like if we don’t work through them it will lead us to separate emotionally and ruin our marriage.
How do I get him to hear me? It seems I can tell him over and over that I understand his point of view but he constantly repeats the same reasons of why he left the church. I don’t think he hears me. I know how important it is to validate so I focus on trying to do that but he isn’t hearing me. So now I don’t feel validated. Which is something he used to do so well.

In today's episode of "Ask A Relationship Coach," Jenny answers a listener question.
In the face of religious transition, the listener wonders...Can I maintain Intimacy when loved ones are blaming me?
"How do I process spouse’s and/or deeply important family members placing complete blame of their anxiety and/or depression on me straying from the covenant path? Seriously, when my world is falling apart and I need love I am given disdain and blame. It’s catastrophic to being able to ever be vulnerable or trusting. Intimacy after years of disdain?"

LISTENER QUESTION:
I've realized that I've got some considerable trauma responses (dissociative disorders) to work through, and it's heavy lifting. Feeling so out of body, and feeling so uncomfortable with intimacy can make romantic relationships really difficult to navigate for lots of reasons. Discomfort over physical and emotional intimacy can become so strong that a desire to escape (end the relationship) becomes overpowering. I find myself fighting this urge to bolt until the discomfort and pressure become too great, and then I break up just to have some sense of comfort and self-control again.
In a situation where intimacy alone can trigger strong feelings of aversion, I'm concerned that I can't trust my discernment about whether someone is a good, healthy match. In a scenario where PTSD hypersensitivity isn't an issue, it seems a person could trust their sense of intuition more reliably, and would use the "alarmed" feeling to recognize red flags or danger/caution. In a situation like mine where the "alarm" setting is always on, I don't have a good emotional litmus test for whether or not, and don't want to just rely on logic or rational assessment to determine the suitability of a dating partner. I need an emotional/intuitive compass, but mine doesn't offer a lot of clarity, and I end up feeling confused, unsafe, and distressed in most romantic relationships.
In the past I attributed this pattern of short, deeply uncomfortable relationships to the idea that I haven't "met the right one" yet. At age 40, I'm realizing the issue is likely more about my own comfort in my body than it is about the person I'm dating, in general. There's also a good chance that picking an emotionally "safe" person to date at the outset is also not working well enough, given my lack of unreliable intuition in this area.
What are some ways to think about this that I haven't considered? One strategy is to avoid intimate relationships altogether, another is to avoid them until I don't have any issues with hypersensitivity or panic (I realize I have a lot of healing work in front of me, I sometimes think I should leave dating until I'm further along this path). Neither of these seems realistic. Thoughts?

Why are people always making jokes about how difficult the holidays can be? Maybe, because they're true! The holidays can be especially difficult on relationships because people don't understand one core concept about going into family situations with a partner. In this episode, Bryce and Jenny explain why it can feel so damaging to feel "alone" at a family event and how negative memories can create intense struggle leading up to the holidays. They also talk about some of their tricks and agreements they use to go into these family situations as a Team. These ideas are so simple but, most people just haven't learned them yet. Take 20 minutes out of your day to listen and your Holiday time will go a lot smoother with your partner.
Bryce and Jenny outline what Conflict will look like in a Conscious Partnership. They pull from their knowledge of Emotionally Focused Therapy, Attachment Theory, and their own experience to give you a clear entry point into how to deal with day to day conflict. Whether we realize it or not, our brains and body are constantly experiencing conflict in relationship to others and it's our job to learn how to speak skillfully, calm ourselves, and soothe our partners in order to have a relationship that feels fulfilling, relaxing, and exciting. They point out all the potential hang ups that couples seem to get in and how to get to a more connected place without spending hours or days "talking" about the problem.
In this episode Bryce and Jenny dive into their work with people dealing with religious differences. Jenny shares her story of "coming out" as an Ex-Mormon Therapist and how she uses her experience to help people in interfaith marriages. They point out some of the pitfalls that couples experience when there are BIG differences in faith and simple techniques that you can use to slowly work towards creating connection. Even though faith transitions can be extremely difficult, hard work, more awareness, and simple relational exercises are all it takes to grow your marriage.
This podcast is unedited
In this episode, Bryce and Jenny open up about the pros and cons to being a Relationship Coach and how it impacts their personal life. They also talk about what to do when you are interested in relationship work and your partner is not. Their impromptu conversation gives you a peak into how they interact with each other as they ask each other questions about life, relationships, and coaching. They set the intention of not editing this episode so that you can get the feel for the space, comments, and quirkiness that they bring.
In this episode, Bryce explains what it will look like to sincerely get over things and where partners get so stuck. Typically, you have one partner that is more emotional than the other and they both judge each other has over emotional and emotionally unavailable. Little do they know, they're playing out a very similar pattern in which they aren't able to hold their own emotional experience very well and they're blaming their partner for it. Bryce speaks to both of the people in this dynamic and what they need to do to get bigger and see the conflict as an opportunity for deeper connection and growth. The magical moment of connection or "getting over something" comes when both people can sincerely see their part and their partner's perspective. You will be able to say thank you.
In this episode, Bryce speaks to the differences in how we attach to our partners and what that means for the relationship. Stan Tatkin, a leader in the work of Adult Attachment Theory, summarizes the 3 Attachment Styles as Anxious (Wave), Avoidant (Island), and Secure (Anchor). Do you know where you most often go when you're triggered? Do you understand what's happening for your partner when they're feeling insecure. If not, this is worth a short listen. Even if we often default to an insecure place, it is possible to achieve a secure partnership. We just have to keep learning and keep working for it.
In this episode, Bryce explains the parts of emotional safety that most people don't understand, why it has to be earned, and how to build more emotional safety with your closest relationships. Many people end up in circular arguments, sweeping things under the rug, and struggling through life because they don't understand that the experience of not feeling emotionally is the root cause of most of their problems. To understand this, Bryce speaks to how we ended up this way, why it is so important to focus on, and what it takes to make a relationship emotionally secure. "It's not that we don't all deserve emotional safety, it's that we aren't wired for it and, therefore, we have to earn it."
In this episode, we interview LMFT and Master Trainer at the Gottman Institute, Laura Heck. Laura is the Co-Developer of The 7 Principles for Making Marriage Work Leadership Training and also the Co-Host of Marriage Therapy Radio. She is a wealth of knowledge and ball of energy! We ask her about the 7 Principles, her work with conflict, and how she found her way into marriage therapy. She also shares about her personal life, where she sees most couples struggle, and how she helps them work through extremely difficult times. We only intended to speak for 45-60 minutes, but we were having so much fun that we just kept learning, sharing, and connecting! This is definitely a fun episode and it will be a great fit for people in any stage of relationship.
Often, there's no soft landing after a break up. Even if one or both people can see it coming, there are feelings of intense loss, confusion, anger, and sadness. There is no manual for how to go through a break up and there is a ton of bad advice out there. In this episode, Bryce talks about the 3 stages of recovery from a breakup, how to go about damage control, and what you need to do grow from your situation. This is for you if you've just been through a break up, you foresee a potential break up, or if you're struggling with the disconnection from a friend or family member.
In this episode, Bryce interviews his parents on what it has been like to go through 34 years of marriage, business struggles, addiction in the family, raising a troubled youth, and so much more! This podcast is going to really hit home if you're a parent who feels lost at times or if you're an adult who is searching for a way to connect more with your parents. This is a vulnerable, in-depth, account of what the Bauer family has gone through to get to where they are now and it's a testament to the value of getting help, never giving up on each other, and leaning into authentic relating.
"I feel honored to have such wise, brave, and compassionate parents. They have stood in the fire with me on countless occasions and this certainly is a heart-warming experience to have them be a part of my life and my work on this podcast today."
-Bryce
Do you, or have you ever thought about, working with your significant other?
Most people say we are crazy!
Sometimes it does seem a bit crazy, and we go through our high and lows, individually and together. It's no easy task balancing business and relationship, but the payoff can be equally as great. The truth is that every couple is in some type of business relationship together. Whether it be finances, family, health, or family trips, the same rules still apply anytime you are trying to work something out together. Business just adds one more dimension. So, if your wanting to know how to improve your business-style conversations, learn how to grow your relationship in business, or if you're considering going the entrepreneurial route, this podcast is for you!
In this episode we are sharing an interview Paul Zelizer did with us on his Awarepreneurs Podcast.
In this episode, Bryce asks Jenny about the term "Emotional Load" and why women tend to carry the bulk of it. It's not that men are completely oblivious or that women ask too much. For most couples, they don't even know exactly what it is they are needing and they don't have language for it. There's a reason why "just tell me what to do" doesn't work in partnership. Bryce and Jenny tackle this topic, head on, by diving right into the dynamics of how the emotional load affects their relationship and what they hear from many of the clients they work with. They also speak to the different ways that couples miss each other and how both parties can have more skillful conversation around the planning, remembering, and feeling of life events.
In this episode, we answer a listener's question from the THRIVE Conference we presented at in Salt Lake City, UT. The woman asks:
"I was always taught that men can't be happy in a marriage where they are not the leader. I was taught that a strong woman emasculates a man. I saw my husband blossom when given leadership roles in the church. I am a strong, opinionated woman. My husband claims he is fine with it, but am I slowly destroying my marriage because I won't be submissive? Can a man raised in patriarchy still feel like a real man in an equal-partnership marriage? How can I build my husband's ego outside of the church? I am so happy of of the patriarchy, but is he? Really? He's so kind and loving that he would never fight for his own needs and I don't want him to have to. Can anyone relate?"
There's no such thing as a perfect parent, but there are ways to better the relationship with your child. In this episode, Bryce speaks about his own experience as a troubled youth and how he has been able to have open up dialogue with his parents about their experience. He also talks about what he learned while working with young adults and families in therapeutic programs, as well as some helpful skills to use with your children.
"Our children have a unique way of showing us precisely where we have work to do because they live a life that is mostly unfiltered. They don't do a very good job of holding back their anger, sadness, blame, joy, and playfulness. We have a choice of whether or not we use this to explore more parts of ourselves and grow or sink deeper into our familiar patterns."
Today Jenny talks about changing your unhelpful relationship patterns by doing the opposite! Your relationship urges ride on your relationship triggers. By continuing to follow your these "urges" you continue to play out patterns of relationship conditioning. If you want something new, and you're ready to uplevel something in your relationship life, you're going to need to do something different!
In this episode, we ask Leah and Cody Young about their transition out of the LDS Church, their public excommunication, and how their marriage and family have grown through the process. They reveal how difficult it was to challenge the ideas that they believed held together their marriage, family, and community. Everyone has something to learn from their journey and they tell it with such wisdom and grace. We also touch on what it has been like to raise 4 daughters through this experience and how they handle emotionally charged conversations with their little ones. Whether your going through a faith transition, struggling to have difficult conversations with your partner, or just wanting to hear an interesting story, this conversation touches it all. Tune in!

In this episode, Bryce tackles Google's 10 most searched relationship questions. What better way to gauge what people care about than to track their Google activity? Some of the questions include "How do you know when your relationship is over?", "Why isn't he calling me back?", and "How do I save a relationship?" There's a nice mix of humor, perspective, and advice in this rapid-fire session Q and A. Whether you're single, in a relationship, married, or feeling single within a relationship, there's a little something in here for everyone. Bryce even answers how to go about a long-distance relationship. Who knew that complex algorithms and data tracking could be so fun and sexy?
In this episode, Bryce talks about the difference between dealing with the logical side and the emotional side of anxiety. Our society has it all wrong and people can spend years in talking about their anxiety, without experiencing much relief. Some forms of therapy are either not enough, or not necessary, to grow our capacity to be with our uncomfortable emotions and actually feel more free and alive. This is a very simple, yet relatively new, way to look at and work with all of the feelings that we spend a huge part of our life running away from. I guarantee that you're mind will be blown by some of the ideas in this episode. Enjoy!
Our culture often uses masculinity and femininity as the butt of a joke in our relationship talk. But...what is the truth about "masculine" men, and "feminine" women?
In today's episode, Bryce and Jenny talk about how the imbalanced Masculine and imbalanced Feminine can show up in your relationship struggles! They discuss how these imbalances show up in their own relationship, and share ideas for how you can turn these struggles into an opportunity for greater balance within yourself, and more harmony in your relationship.
In today's episode, Jenny discusses how you can use your feelings of depression to power up your relationship life.
While clinical depression may require medical intervention, we all experience feelings of depression...times of flatness, numbness, or feeling blue.
These feelings may not be comfortable, but they are a powerful messenger, and what they have to say can reconnect you to yourself and those you love!
Jenny will talk about why feelings of depression arise, and how you can use their message to create more and more of what you really want in your relationship life!
Bryce gives you a quick, 15-minute, jump start to help you fix any disagreement with someone in your life. No matter if it is big or small, this will allow you get out of your head and on a path to make things feel better. Because we can't coach everyone all the time, we want to give you a little slice of our process that anyone can access at any time, for free! This episode is all about jumping right into the solution and it's meant to meet you right where you're at. By giving you some space to relax, clarify your story, feel the emotion, and shift perspective, you will experience more freedom, more ease, and more understanding. This isn't some magical cure or dumb thought experiment. This is about dealing with real stuff, real stress, and experiencing real results. And, if you're not in a disagreement at the moment, this podcast will give you some real tools to think about and digest for the next time something comes along. Enjoy!
In this episode, Bryce and Jenny speak to 5 measurements that help keep communication healthy and effective. By asking ourselves and each other about our intentions, our experience, and our goals, we are able to have way smoother disagreements and not get caught in "circular arguing". Not only are we able to reach a place that feels good for both people, we are also able to do in a ways that avoid causing more harm.
With each Pillar comes a question. If we aren't playing the same game or for the same reasons, then we are bound to struggle. This is a new paradigm in connecting in which we strive to bring all the part of us and our experience to the table. It's possible to shift little disagreements into play, bigger fights into healing moments, and it allows us space to tackle the big stuff while honoring who we are and what we truly want for our partners. This is the stuff that you didn't learn in school.
In today's episode Jenny talks about the importance of being able to QUESTION EVERYTHING! While spending all of your time and energy questioning things probably wouldn't serve you, if you want to create more and more of your ideal relationship life, you MUST be ABLE to question your relationship dynamics.
By questioning what dynamics are and aren't working, you are able to de-clutter your relationship life, making more and more room for what will feel great, and really light you up!
In this episode, Bryce talks about false stories people have about how to take responsibility and solve conflicts. There actually aren't 1001 places where couples get stuck. There are usually only a few and he breaks them down one by one. This podcast is especially for those that either struggle with blame or taking on ALL the work in the relationship. He breaks down the myth that people make us feel a certain way and he give clear cut examples of how to take responsibility in a way that is non-threatening to yourself and your partner. Tune in for some firsthand accounts and advice on how to get to that place that feels good, during an argument.
In this episode, Bryce and Jenny talk about why they decided to change the podcast name to the Conscious Couple and what it means to be a Conscious Couple.
Are you doing what you want to do right now in this moment or are you doing things because you feel like you "have to" or "should"? Is your relationship where you want it to be and are you aware of why it is the way it is?
What about your work, your family, your health, and your mission in life? This could all be affecting how you show up in your relationship. The first step is always opening your eyes and questioning. But, what if I'm all in and my partner is not? We touch on that, too.
In this episode, Bryce explores how our own awareness of death can actually improve our life and our relationships. He talks about his own near death experience and how he has used it to focus on what matters. What would you say? How would you live? How would you feel if you really understood that we have a limited and unknown amount of time?
Do you ever find yourself feeling confused about how to spend your time and energy? There is so much that needs to get done, but nothing sounds interesting or inspiring.
You may feel flat, or bored, or lost...and begin to wonder what is wrong with you!
In today's episode, Jenny is going to talk about how INSECURE ATTACHMENT moments can leave us feeling unsure about what we want and what we care about. She will also talk about what you can DO when you're struggling to reconnect with yourself and what really matters!
In this episode, Bryce opens up new dialogue about what is possible beyond just having a healthy relationship. He talks about the 4 types of Unattached Relationships, struggles in the first phases of a dating, why many people want more than the base requirements, and what Powerful Relationship looks like. He also shares some of his own struggles in moving into this new phase of relationship and how you can move forward, too.
In this episode, Bryce and Jenny talk about some of the studies done on sex frequency and happiness, as well as their experience in working with couples. They discuss the dynamic that forms when one partner wants to have sex more than the other and how to create a space where both partners feel good about their sex life. Physical connection is an important piece of building a lasting and powerful partnership.

He speaks to his own experience with meditation and how you can use this practice to help work through personal and relationship struggles more efficiently. He acknowledges that, "without a way to step back from our experience, we are forced to either solve our problems or think our way out of them before we can feel at peace."
In today's episode Bryce and Jenny share some exciting news about this podcast!
They also discuss one of the realities that will come up in any long-term relationships...DIFFERENCES. They talk about some of their own differences, and what it has looked like to face them, honor them, and grow through them.
