Everyday Truth with Kurt Skelly is a 15 minute, daily podcast in which Kurt teaches through books of the Bible with ministry friends or one of his four adult children.
Psalm 2:4-6
Make no mistake—God has a loving and compassionate view of sinful man. He sent His Son because He loves the world and desires its reconciliation with Him. However, when mankind unwisely and proudly flouts God's rule and despises His Person—even to the point where he irrationally believes he can resist God effectively—God laughs at such presumption!
Psalm 2:1-3
Why would anybody think that he can stand against God Himself? Why would people of power gather together against the ultimate power of God? These are the questions David asked, and these are the exact verses that early Christians drew comfort from. Listen and find out how on today’s episode.
Ephesians 6:17
Too many Christians adopt an entirely defensive mindset about spiritual warfare. To be certain, God provides armor for defensive protection, but that’s not all He provides. Believers have access to the Word of God, and they are to wield it with confidence and consistency.
Ephesians 6:16
It is not what is true that will help me; it is what I believe about that truth that will ultimately help me. Faith is the principle by which all believers are to live (Rom. 1:17). It is the only way by which to please God, and it is the only reliable evidence of what we claim is true.
Ephesians 6:14-15
On today’s podcast, we discuss the protection that our gifted righteousness provides for us. We are vitally protected by what Christ has already accomplished for us on the Cross! And that same Gospel that saves us is able to save others. Soldiers need to have on the shoes of Gospel preparation as they wage spiritual warfare.
Ephesians 6:13-14
The belt was essential and integral to every soldier's armor. The belt held every other piece of armor in its proper place. For the believer, the belt to be worn is the belt of truth. Without an accurate view of our God and ourselves, we cannot be effective soldiers of Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 6:10-12
Ask the average Christian what his battle is, and he will typically list some bad circumstance or prickly person in his life. These verses help us frame the essence of real spiritual warfare. What is it? How do we prepare for it?
Ephesians 6:5-9
One out of every five people who lived during the first century were slaves. What was a Christian supposed to do in such an unjust institutional system? Where is the fairness? How should Christians relate to their “bosses,” and what attitude should a Christian “boss” have toward those who work for him?
Ephesians 6:4
A father has a profound influence on his children. This verse outlines a father's responsibility to train and teach his children. What does it mean to “bring them up”? What is the difference between training and teaching? How can fathers—sometimes even unwittingly—provide their children to wrath?
Ephesians 6:1-3
Context is king in Bible interpretation, and understanding the context of this passage is essential. We will consider the following questions: What kind of parents are in view in this passage? What is the difference between obeying and honoring? Is there a limiting phrase to the extent of obedience?
Ephesians 5:29-33
Sometimes it is helpful to simplify. When we can distill a group or individual’s purpose down to one simple statement, it becomes easier to see one’s priorities. He can use the statement as a lens by which to view all of the lesser responsibilities. We find such a statement about marriage in today’s passage! Don’t miss it!
Ephesians 5:25-28
The Bible instructs husbands to love their wives AS Christ loved the church. If that be true (and it is), then we husbands must answer the larger question: How did Christ love the church? Fortunately, this passage of Scripture supplies at least 4 ways husbands can and should love their wives as Jesus loves His bride!
Ephesians 5:22-24
Much controversy surrounds the word submission in modern culture. Somehow, the word has become negative and connotes inferiority or weakness. Nothing could be farther from the truth! Biblical submission is evidence of Spirit-power and was modeled by the Lord Jesus Himself. Moreover, it is an essential component to the success of any group.
Ephesians 4:29-32
Sin’s roots go deep. “Putting off” sin in one’s life is much more than behavior modification; it requires heart-level repentance! Central to the health of any relationship is the need for forgiveness. But how do we forgive people who have wronged us too egregiously? This passage gives us the most powerful why of all.
Ephesians 4:25-28
This passage is one of the Bible's most practical passages. Using the simple format of (1) what not to do, (2) what to do, and (3) why to do it, Paul emphasizes five toxic behaviors among Christians that damage others and ultimately grieve the Holy Spirit.
Ephesians 4:20-24
This passage provides such a simple and applicable way to look at Christian behavior. It is like taking off old clothes and putting on new ones. But how does a believer know what is new and old? Because he has the Holy Spirit to teach him, the Word of God guides his thinking. Renewed thinking produced a radically new behavior—behavior that reflects the new man in Christ that each true believer is.
Ephesians 4:16-19
If we believers have indeed been made part of Christ’s body, then our behavior should match our new identity. We do not have the excuse that unbelievers have. They are empty in their thinking, dark in their understanding, blind in their heart, lifeless in their relationship with God, and ignorant about what the Christian life is all about! But we are not!
Ephesians 4:14-15
Love’s best gift is truth, and truth’s best wrapping is love. When truth and love are team members, they pack a most powerful punch. When truth is given without love, it is typically rejected. Paul modeled the principle that leaders can open their mouths only as they also open their hearts! (2 Cor. 6:14-20).
Ephesians 4:12-13
We tend to measure our own growth and the growth of our churches with faulty measuring sticks. The good news is that God has already provided the most accurate measurement of all! How can we know if we are becoming more mature? How can we assess our growth over time? By using the measurement of our relationship with Jesus Himself!
Ephesians 4:11
When Jesus ascended to heaven and the church age was inaugurated, several important events took place. The Holy Spirit was given to believers in a brand new way! He indwells the bodies of all those who put their faith in Christ. Also, Jesus gifted His Church with leaders to accomplish His purposes. These leaders included apostles, prophets, evangelists, and pastors/teachers. Each has a specific function, and the first two are foundational and temporary.
Ephesians 4:7-10
What does it mean that Jesus descended into the lower parts of the earth before He ascended into heaven? Where did Jesus go during the days between His death and Resurrection? What did He promise to the thief on the cross? Did Jesus have to suffer hell for us by going there temporarily? What does it mean that He “led captivity captive”?
Ephesians 4:3-6
Unity is not a matter of simply getting together and ignoring our differences, no matter what they may be… that is union. Unity is a matter of coming together around the same shared, non-negotiable truths. Find out on today’s episode what those truths are and how they are essential for all true believers.
Ephesians 4:1-2
After three solid chapters of rich doctrinal truth, Paul finally aims at application. In fact, chapters 4-6 are all about applying biblical truth. What is surprising is that Paul begins the biblical application with an appeal for believers to guard the unity we share because of the Holy Spirit. Like a belt, peace holds us together!
Ephesians 3:17-21
The unshakable position of every believer—spiritually, mentally, and emotionally—is found in his connection to the relentless love of Christ. When a person finds his security there, he is unmoved by the seeming instabilities of the world around him. He begins to see God work in ways he never thought possible!
Ephesians 3:14-16
The prayers of the Bible bear little resemblance to the majority of prayers in the modern church. Modern prayers typically center on circumstances, stuff, and physical health. Biblical prayers focus much more on the incredibly more important aspects of spiritual health and strength.
Ephesians 3:8-13
God's plans are amazing! They are way above our ability to figure them out, and even when He chooses to tell us why/how He does the things He does, we still can’t comprehend much of it. One of the most startling truths about God’s plan to include Jews and Gentiles in the one body of the church is that God’s unfolding plan to do so is actually a way that He teaches the principalities and powers in heavenly places!
Ephesians 3:5-7
A careful reading of the Old Testament reveals God’s heart to reach all people, not only the people of Israel. What was not clear to Old Testament saints was God’s shocking plan to combine the Jews and Gentiles together as one body—the church! There would be no distinction to status level; they would be fellow heirs of all God has promised to grant by His grace to all who put their faith in Jesus Christ, Jew or Gentile. The gospel would be the key to unlocking the door for everybody!
Ephesians 3:1-4
Paul refused to play the victim! He viewed his seemingly negative circumstances as yet another validation of God’s plan for his life to bring the gospel to the Gentile world. He wanted his Gentile readers to know that God was even then unfolding an intricate and strategic plan to spread Christ's message to the entire world. Far from being hindered by Roman imprisonment, Paul was instead captured by Christ and positioned to advance the gospel even further!
Ephesians 2:15-22
Jesus died so that salvation could be a reality for everyone—Jews and Gentiles alike. The “middle wall of partition” has been torn down, and all who come to Jesus by faith have equal standing at His cross. Those that were afar off (Gentiles) and those that were nigh (Jews) can now join the family of God as one new man and be the one body of Jesus together!
Ephesians 2:10-14
We have been saved for a purpose. While it is true that we have not been saved BY works, it is equally true that we have been saved UNTO good works. Simply put, God has specially designed good works for believers to accomplish, and He has supernaturally fashioned each of His new creatures (creations) to be able to accomplish those very works. In that sense, believers are His masterpiece new creations!
Ephesians 2:4-9
The gift of salvation is not a result of any good work that we have done to earn it in some way. It IS, however, the result of Someone’s good works—JESUS. He satisfied the righteous demands of the law, and He paid the awful price of sin on behalf of us sinners. Were it not for God's rich mercy and great love in sending Jesus to die for our sins, there would be no hope of redemption for anybody.
Ephesians 2:1-4
One of the best incentives for Christians to reenergize their commitment to serve God is to simply remember what they used to be before they were saved. The picture is not pretty! But when one considers what he has been saved from, he is encouraged to serve God with new determination and greater purpose.
Ephesians 1:19-23
There are some things that God wants all of His children to know after they have been born into His family. Among them is this great truth: He wants His children to know that they can be sure that they will be just like Jesus! God will used the same power by which Jesus was resurrected from the dead in order to accomplish His purpose in the lives of His children!
Ephesians 1:14-18
There is joy in the presence of the angels of God when a sinner repents. Paul possessed the same kind of heavenly attitude about those who responded positively to his gospel message. Find out the two ways that Paul prayed for new converts! Learn the importance of interceding on behalf of new believers.
Ephesians 1:9-13
Paul begins the letter of Ephesians in the same way that Jesus taught His disciples to begin their prayers to God: by simply praising His name for the amazing spiritual blessings He alone provides. Learn today about the blessing of redemption, forgiveness, acceptance, adoption, inheritance, being sealed, and more! This is a “wow” passage for us to consider!
Ephesians 1:4-9
Does God effectively call certain individuals to salvation before they are even born? Further, is it to be inferred that God does not intend for some people ever to be saved? What does it mean that we are “chosen in Him” and “predestinated.” Unfortunately, some have misunderstood these beautiful terms and have thereby caused fear and disappointment where God intended comfort and hope.
Ephesians 1:1-3
Most people list blessings as the physically good things that happen in their lives: healing, a raise at work, a nice vacation, etc. But these blessings are so superficial compared with the ways by which God truly desires to bless His children. Find out today two amazing ways God blesses His children because of their relationship with Jesus!
Ephesians 1:1
Paul loved the church at Ephesus! He spent a good deal of time personally preaching to them, leading them to Christ, and discipling them. He testified that the had preached to them the “whole counsel of God.” Yet there was more to say! In our study of this important letter, we will learn what doctrinal truth was essential (chapters 1-3) and what actions should arise in a believer’s life because of that truth (chapters 4-6).
Hosea 14:4-9
Good preaching should always include a very pointed application. Under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Hosea poured his heart out for 40 years of preaching ministry. The book is a sampling of his testimony and messages, and the last verse represents his heart for all those who hear his message. Don’t miss it!
Hosea 14:1-3
How does one return to God? Can he actually come back? And what should he say to God? In the amazing passage, God tells the repentant sinner to “take with you words” and say the following to God: _____________________. (Find out in today’s episode!)
Hosea 13:9-16
In the middle of a hard-to-hear passage of rebuke, Hosea offers the redemptive hope that can only come from God! Through Jesus, God offers hope not only over sin itself, but also from its consequences of death and the grave. Paul quoted this very verse to encourage the Corinthians about the same thing!
Hosea 13:4-8
To be sure, some people go through dark times and choose to blame God. But those that enjoy prosperity are much more likely to forget God than those who go through hard times. The irony is this: God is the bestower of blessings, and He is the one most often neglected when they multiply!
Hosea 13:1-3
These three verses are a powerful reminder of how destructive sinful pride can be. So completely destructive is its toxin, that people rarely recover from its dominating effect upon them.
Hosea 12:7-14
Israel was doing well economically and had a thriving economy based upon her business savvy and ability to trade effectively. She even bragged about her ability to do so. She enjoyed all of the trappings of the wealth such business success brought. But God saw it differently. It would be so much better for Israel to return to the time of living in tents and having nothing so that she could rely upon God for protection and provision again!
Hosea 12:1-6
Hosea compares the people to their forefather Jacob. Jacob was a deceiver and a supplanter. He manipulated to get what he wanted, and he had a reputation for scheming. Israel was acting just like their father. But Jacob changed! He prevailed with God, wept, and communicated with God in a new and powerful way. Hosea pleaded for Israel to follow that pattern of return to God.
Hosea 11:1-12
This short chapter reflects the tender heart of God in such a wonderful way! A mere human being would never have put up with the kind of rank unfaithfulness that Israel had exhibited. But God is not a man! He demonstrates that even His judgments on His people have a long-term positive result. He loves them and longs to bless them!
Hosea 10:9-15
The law of sowing and reaping is found throughout the Word of God. Perhaps the most difficult part of the process is understanding that present, righteous decisions have enormous value that cannot be seen until other seasons in our lives. The people of Israel were just beginning to see the consequences (reaping) of their choices. In this context, Hosea pleads with them to cultivate the field of their hearts and plant better seeds.
Hosea 10:1-8
What you do with the blessings God has given you will reveal a lot about your character. Do you respond in humble gratitude? Do the blessings fuel future obedience? Or do you simply consume the blessings for your own enjoyment and benefits, giving only a passing nod to God? Your heart is often best revealed during days of economic prosperity.
Hosea 9:14-17
So comprehensive would the judgment of God be upon Israel that she would lose her very status as a nation. She would lose God’s favor, God’s provided blessings, and even (in many cases) her own children. Yet, hope remained. She would become a wanderer among the nations. The scattering of God’s people would, in and of itself, be a preservative. They would not and could not be utterly destroyed, and one day, God would regather them from the corners of the world. Today, we are witnesses to some of that regathering!
Hosea 9:10-13
In today's episode, we learn how God viewed His past relationship with His people. They were a pleasant and joyful refreshment to Him, and His memories of them were fond. But they unwisely left God and brought horrible consequences upon themselves. Now, they were doing the exact same thing!
Hosea 9:5-9
One of the jobs of a spiritual leader is to be a watchman. Because of his own walk with God and knowledge of God’s Word, he has a vantage point that others do not have. He can see things on the horizon that others cannot see. With diligence and boldness, he must be willing to warn those around him about the impending danger.
Hosea 9:1-4
We all love to experience economic blessings—the pay raise at work, the strong stock market, the fertile garden, etc. During Hosea’s day, Israel was experiencing all kinds of great economic blessings. So then why would God tell the people not to rejoice in them and for them? Had they not come from God? Isn’t joy appropriate in those situations?
Hosea 8:9-14
Deer hunters understand that a buck will make risky and dangerous choices when he is on the prowl for a doe. The “rut” season is the best time to hunt because the otherwise cautious deer will put himself in a vulnerable place. God likened the nation of Israel to a dumb donkey who ventured alone into a very dangerous place!
Hosea 8:6-8
Small bad decisions will create a tornado of consequence eventually. Israel learned this the hard way. They sowed the wind; i.e., they made seemingly insignificant evil choices over a long period of time. But those choices—all put together—created a whirlwind of hurt and despair.
Hosea 8:1-5
The people of Israel claimed to know God. When the consequences of their sin caught up with them, they protested that they couldn’t possibly deserve such calamity—they know God! But the colossal mistake they made was this: knowing God is a lot different than merely knowing about God.
Hosea 7:8-14
Your likelihood to hit a target’s bullseye is only as good as the accuracy of the weapon you choose to use. If the barrel on the rifle is bent, the bullet will not fly straight. If the bow is crooked, the arrow will miss the mark. God called Israel a “crooked bow” who missed the mark. How so? Listen in!
Hosea 7:1-7
The people of Hosea’s day were not considering that God remembered everything they did. In fact, their sins had surrounded them! If God remembers our sins, then there can be no hope for any of us, right? Wrong! Because God has also provided a way by which He can forget our sins!
Hosea 5:6-15
The people of Israel had dealt treacherously with the Lord. How so? They had intermarried with unbelievers and raised children that did not even know God. In that sense, they had raised children as foreigners (strangers) to the knowledge of God and the practice of serving Him.
Hosea 5:1-5
Behavior and works alone do not indicate a sincere faith, but there certainly are certain habits that we can practice that can fertilize a more ready turning to God. The people of Israel did not “frame their doings” to turn to God; rather, they allowed a heart bent toward idolatry and sensuality to guide their decision-making.
Hosea 4:17-19
Among the worst judgments God can bring someone is this: letting him have his own way. Israel had stubbornly pursued her lusts and loyalties. She had made up her mind that she wanted her petty idols and cheap pleasures more than she wanted God. Although God repeatedly warned her that she would regret such decision-making, she stubbornly persisted until God relented and let her alone. Be careful what you ask for!
Hosea 4:14-16
God uses everybody. That’s right. Even rebellious people are used of God… just not in the way they want. God will use the poor example of someone who has made a sinful choice like a billboard that says, “Don’t be like him!” Israel had made up her mind that she would not follow God. Places in Israel that had been places of holiness now had become cesspools of sinful behavior. God told Judah to stay away from Israel lest she fall into the same behaviors.
Hosea 4:9-13
Temptation is a slick marketing agent. She over-promises and under-perform. She tastes good to the mouth, but alway leaves the stomach upset. The people of Israel were living in sinful addiction—it was there very spirit to pursue sin. They loved the comfort (like the cool shade of a tree) of fleshly religion, but they didn’t realize that their pursuits were eroding their own hearts.
Hosea 4:1-8
It is not a knowledge about God that prevents the destruction of a life or an institution; it is a knowledge of God that secures us. The people of Israel had rejected their relationship with God, refusing to know Him in any real and relational way. Without a knowledge of God, the people acted in the most selfish ways with a total lack of regard for their fellow man. God placed a special accountability on the priests because they were not teaching the Word of God. Instead, they were imitating and benefiting from the sinful behaviors of the people. What a mess!
Hosea 3:1-5
What if the wife you loved walked out on you? What if she cheated on you in the most hurtful way? What if she did this over and over again? Divorce, right? Vengeance, perhaps? But God’s command was entirely different! Love her. Go get her. Pay whatever price to secure her. Restore her. Be faithful to her. Astounding! (And that’s the way that God loves us.)
Hosea 2:18-23
Through the years, God’s covenant people have not had the best testimony. In the Old Testament, many of the individuals who were among the elect nation made the unfortunate, individual choice to reject God. Does that mean that God has abrogated His covenant with His people. Can hardened people ever come back to God? Is there hope for those who do not currently enjoy a relationship with God?
Hosea 2:10-17
When people stubbornly pursue satisfaction in their sinful choices, trite temptations, and empty idols, God uses various means to get their attention. At times, he removes physical blessings. Other times, he takes the joy of sinful pleasure away. At the extreme, He allows a place of utter emptiness and desertion. But it’s in that place that His presence, His love, and His offer of hope greatly abound.
Hosea 2:6-9
Two ways that God gets our attention when we persistently pursue our temptations: (1) He makes them less accessible and satisfying. Our efforts to pursue them increase, but our achieving them and being satisfied by them decreases. (2) He removes His own blessings of protection and provision so that we can learn how truly fruitless life is without His involvement.
Hosea 2:2-5
Each person is responsible in some part for the group’s behavior. Even if an individual does not participate in the sin, he has a responsibility to call it out in some measure. God speaks to the people of Israel to call out and condemn the immoral group identity that Israel had embraced.
Hosea 1:8-2:1
Hosea’s children were given names by God, and those names each represented the sad condition of God’s people: Jezreel—God’s people will be scattered. Lo-Ruhamah—there will be no more mercy. Lo-Ammi—you are not my people. YET, God’s promise to them was that He would bring gathering from the scattering, mercy to replace the judgment, and belonging to replace the abandoning!
Hosea 1:6-8
Economic prosperity and good health are not necessarily a product of obedience; in fact, God often allows very wicked people to enjoy both. The underserved blessings of God should incentivize loving and obedient submission to Him. Israel did not understand this in spite of the radical ways God showed them.
Hosea 1:3-5
In modern days, baby names typically don’t have any more significance than that they sounded good to the parents. Not so in the Bible. Names were indicators of a parent’s desired character for his child, or were a testimony to a family member, or (as in the case of Hosea’s son) a prediction by God of something that was to come. The person with that name was a living prophecy of the Word of God!
Hosea 1:1-2
The book of Hosea is a book with maximum shock value. Not only does God communicate through Hosea’s words a very powerful message to Israel, but also He communicates an even more powerful message through Hosea’s life. Hosea’s family becomes the ultimate example of the unfaithfulness of God’s people and the amazing love of God for them.

What is all this talk about the Red Heifer? What does the Red Heifer have to do with Israel’s war with Hamas? Does the Red Heifer have anything to do with end times events? What does the Bible say about the Red Heifer? What does Jewish tradition say about the Red Heifer? How does the Red Heifer teach us about the Lord Jesus Christ? Last week, in the most random way, I was able to see the Red Heifers in Israel!
