This semester, Cesar and I have been working hard together as doctoral students at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley on our topic of study: ungrading. For those unfamiliar with the term, ungrading is a form of evaluation in which there are no grades or strict metrics; instead, feedback is open-ended and ongoing. It's something we both feel passionate about, inspired to share with others, and determined to explore further. We've been diving deep into this concept - discussing its possibilities and implications - and using our own experience to develop frameworks for educators who might be interested in trying it out. Erik Thorstensson has a degree in mechanical engineering specializing in environmental product design and was awarded the Skapa Diploma in memory of Alfred Nobel in 2007, Sweden's most significant innovation award. He went to India and made the first connectors out of waste materials. He then created his first Strawbees prototype with kids at Kids Hack Day. Today he is the Chief Innovation Officer inventing and prototyping with his Product Development Team in Sweden and collaborating with teachers worldwide. One of his many projects is the School of Ridiculous Inventions where he sets himself high ceiling STEAM challenges. In his free time, he flies model airplanes.

Josh Tovar will join me and share how the use of social media (Facebook/Instagram/Twitter/Periscope/Snapchat), allowed for the school’s report card to increase from a D- to B- in three years and earning state distinctions. The graduation rate increased by 8% and it could be seen that the campus Familia culture had increased as reflected by the last climate survey where 80 out of 88 items increased to include 100% of items by students and parents.
Dr. Morris is the Morehouse College’s 2021 Winner of the Vulcan Teaching Award of Excellence who launched her Advanced Inorganic Chemistry course in Virtual Reality in Spring of 2021 in the digital twin campus created by VictoryXR on the Engage Platform. She is a pioneer in this space as the chemistry content in VR is limited to non-existent. She most recently became the Project Manager of the VR Project at Morehouse College. Her purpose in life is to create inclusivity in STEAAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, agriculture, and math). She believes that VR provides a pathway for creating that inclusion through immersive education, vocational rehabilitation services, and therapeutic experiences.
Dennis Mathew is a husband, father, elementary school speech pathologist, singer-songwriter, and author. For over 20 years Dennis has had the joy and honor of working with children in public schools. His published works so far are “Bello the Cello”, “My Wild First Day of School”, and “How Grizzly Found Gratitude”. He is also a singer-songwriter with a published music album for schools called, “The Let’s Roar Experience”. Through his books and music Dennis has reached tens of thousands of students worldwide since 2018.
