Max Tolkoff knows everything about radio and nothing about music. Mike Halloran knows everything about music and (almost) nothing about radio. It's the perfect storm of info/non-info, and the basis for endless bickering about the future of each (radio and music, not each other). Hilarity ensues and nothing is sacred. The Oddcast is the perfect title.
Happy anniversary! Hard to believe there are almost 52 episodes. "Almost", because a couple of episodes have gone missing. These are now refered to as The "lost" episodes. If you find them, give them back please. Otherwise, console yourself with this thought: how can these two idiots have done 52 hours (roughly) worth of yelling, screaming and general ignorant pontificating? Well, Tolkoff and Halloran have more than 500 years of music and radio experience between them and need to knucklehead-splain to SOMEONE. The episodes are all archived so feel free to poke around for ones you missed. This week's episode is, as usual an homage to our hosts ignorance, featuring an appearance by Nerf from KTCL who, under intense interrogation by Hal and Tolkoff, explains the rating success of the station. Pay attention!

It's a Savage world out there. Rick, Dick, Nick, Steve, Bob, Mike, Ike, etc, etc. But radio's most respected Savage appears to be Brad from Ohio. WAPS to be accurate. Why? Fuck if we know. The Oddcast opened Brad's brain recently and, honestly, had a hard time closing it. It's a absolutely a marathon, try to Pace yourself. Does he give us hope for the future of radio? Not gonna say, why not listen to the episode?

Also, Halloran tries to explain the concept of crossover hits, and really doesn't. Tolkoff finds Halloran's critical thinking skills have (surprise!) left the building. But in a bit of good fortune, this week's episode is actually saved by Halloran's #1 son, Declan. Declan is, fortunately, still in the demo and can speak more intelligently than pops about what the kids of today wanna hear.

Just think of porn as short films with happy endings. And we all know that quite a few of you (us, whatever) have an item on ye old bucket list that reads something like "Act in porn video". Oh, please don't deny it. Among other tidbits of useless knowledge in this episode we will learn which 91X jock had to get it up for a gig. We also find out absolutely nothing about why Halloran and Tolkoff still do this podcast.

Wherein Tolkoff and Halloran find out shit they never knew about 91X. Carbon dating was, in fact, used in the making of this podcast. It was revealed that the station first started broadcasting in 1887. Yes, 91X was always on the cutting edge, especially when it came to technology. No other station was broadcasting at that time. Which meant that the station had exclusive releases from U2, REM, The Cure, and Depeche Mode, way, way, way ahead of the pack. Enjoy!

On this special holiday episode, Tolkoff and Halloran ride their Lime and Bird e-scooters to the beach. When they bog down in the sand at the water's edge the two radio kingpins ditch the scoots and walk off into the sunset. Later during high tide, the scooters are washed out to sea.

Ok folks, its the next to last episode of the year. Don't worry, Max and Halloran are, at this very moment, in the studio cutting up the highlight reel. What they don't know is that there ARE no highlights. What they also don't know is we switched their regular coffee for Folgers crystals. Let's see how they like it....

Every announcer in the history of rock radio pronounces it "Die-er Make-er". We've all been wrong. For years. It's not like the subject has never come up. It has, but being 'Muricans we love to hate learning anything so learning the right way to pronounce a Zeppelin song was a no-brainer: ignore it. Then came Halloran's interview with Robert Plant (Oddly, Halloran never spent his formative years in mainstream rock having to play this song, so he's actually less of a fool than the rest of us). Will it change anything? Well, it should.
Its on Amazon. DO NOT watch this show while on drugs. Unless, of course, you'd fancy a real life version of The Ring happening to you. Nuff said.

Messages are not facts. But facts can sometimes be messages. Messages are open to interpretation. The message itself means nothing, until filtered through your own world view. Does the message convey good, or bad? Do you see logic, or nonsense? Do you see fact, or interpretation? Best advice: let nonsense be your guide.

And they would do it again. One of the topics in this week's episode; Tolkoff wants to challenge a GM to give the two of them an ailing station to turn around. Halloran hates the idea and thinks Tolkoff has gone off the rails. Then the two cultural icons were distracted by a squirrel.

Pat Magnarella continues to school the Oddcast. This week he discusses the importance of bands who know how to work hard, confirms the intelligence of bands that buy mass amounts of cheap tube socks before getting in that tour bus, and demonstrates great patience for stupid questions.
We care about your feedback (an obvious lie), send us mail at thatoddcast@gmail.com
He's a one man music discovery machine. He's touched the careers of some of our most beloved artists; Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls, Weezer, Beck, and so many more. One day, Pat Magnarella will look back on his time on The Oddcast and realize this was definitely one of the low points of his career.

Halloran and Tolkoff have a finely honed sense of absolutely nothing. But that doesn't stop them from weighing in with nonsensical comments and bad advice. Like, Facebook hates us, furries, Green Day in Boston, and whither image production.

At some point we're gonna have to move this whole operation offshore. The Orkney Islands seems like the perfect place. After all, that's where Luke Skywalker went to get away from it all. If its good enough for him, ts good enough for a couple of schmoes from CA.

After 16 weeks of podcasts Lenny Diana (remember, he's the future of radio) finally speaks to us. The many cogent thoughts Lenny has about radio and the industry had to fight Halloran and Tolkoff screaming at each other. But eventually we got there. We hope.

You'd be forgiven for thinking these two boneheads will eventually get tired of the sound of their own voices. But they won't, even though you will. On the plus side... wait. There is no plus side.

Tolkoff, as usual, takes a rather dim view of the situation. Halloran, true to form, has NO IDEA what to think. Together, it's a case of the blind leading the stupid. The only thing they can agree on is that some poor, hapless station with crappy ratings would be well served to have these two as change agents. Feel free to talk among yourselves.

This week Halloran and Tolkoff finally shut the hell up (a little bit) so they can hear Nic explain how horrible he thinks they are (a little bit). Actually, none of that is true. What IS true is how much Nic has maximized his time in broadcasting. Hear it all right here...

It would be convenient to say Nic Harcourt followed the Beatles, Stones, and all the other brit bands to America to find fame and fortune, but the truth, much like Harcourt himself, is far more complicated. Nic's assault on the USA started humbly at WDST in Woodstock, NY. before storming the west coast at the famous KCRW in Los Angeles. For ten years he gently nudged us awake with astute music curation and a warm delivery on Morning Becomes Eclectic. During this time Nic spread his wings as a music supervisor, consultant, musician, and the national voice of Land Rover USA. Make yourself comfortable, this is gonna take a couple of weeks.
As usual, Halloran and Tolkoff try to achieve a deeper understanding of modern broadcasting. They discuss some of the challenges, as well as possible solutions, to many of radio's current ills. However, as is often the case with these two, they achieve nothing more than sounding like a couple of ten year olds arguing over a candy bar. Enjoy!

For some reason science cannot explain, Halloran chose to spend his valuable minutes on the show demeaning Tolkoff. You can probably imagine how THAT went. In fact, you can listen to it right now.

Tedd Roman started his radio career at the tender age of 17 as a gofer for Mark & Brian at KLOS. He quickly became the show's producer at a time when the famous morning show started a meteoric rise to the top spot in Los Angeles. Then, as most things do, it ended, forcing Ted to hit the streets for a REAL job. Eventually he made his way to Y107, INDIE 103.1, and other less notable stations. But more importantly, Tedd became a field producer for Big Brother, and other TV fare, which he still does today. Halloran and Tolkoff spend a lost (almost) hour trying to figure it all out.

So, what did we learn last week? Yep, we don't remember either. We just like the sound of Ted's voice. It makes us think the world may not, actually, blow itself up with nukes. But what do we know?
Email us! THATODDCAST@gmail.com
Ted Volk arrived on the alternative scene at the very beginning of a major upheaval in a format that, at the time, was barely even recognized as a format. Ted started his promotion career as the Boston local for Geffen/DGC. Eventually, the mother ship in L.A. called Ted in to explain that it was time to move west. This week and next, the man who was responsible for steering Alternative radio on a steady course through the Nirvana years will speak. Max and Mike, dullards that they are, will listen and ask respectful questions (hahahaha! Did you actually believe that?).

Halloran and Tolkoff THINK they know the right way to do on-air interviews. As usual, they're delusional. They can't even interview each other properly.
Email: THATODDCAST@gmail.com
Halloran and Tolkoff engage in shameless name dropping while discussing proper artist interview techniques. Then they realize neither of them actually knows what the hell they are talking about. Hilarity ensues (well, at least THEY think so).

Bryan Schock schools Max and Mike on the proper radio career; explains why they are total failures and Bryan Shock is not. Also, Max and Mike try to touch the place on Bryan that touched Tiger Woods.

Tolkoff Lets Halloran talk non-stop for almost 15 minutes without interruption, then he interrupts. Also, Halloran hijacks Pearl Jam. As usual, near hilarity ensues.
More on the search for the 21st century protest music; Max yells at Mike; Mike yells at Max. Comedy Ensues...
In the first ever episode of The Oddcast Max starts off by attempting to convince Halloran that ASMR is the most important movement on the internet. Before launching into a discussion about modern day protest songs. More importantly, where are they?
