In this episode I chat with Maine trapper Brian Bernosky. Brian balances running a trapline with a full time job and raising a family in central Maine. He put up huge numbers of beavers this season and has some tips to share about trapping methods, efficiency, balancing time and responsibilities, and much more. Brian is also the vice president of the Maine Trappers Association and we talk about what the MTA is working on, particularly the Spring Fling Rendezvous on May 17-19, 2024! We also talk about Brian’s dad, Gerry Whitcomb, legendary Maine trapper who recently passed.

Yeah, it's episode 200 of the podcast. But I've never been big on milestones, birthdays, holidays or celebrations, so on we go, with little fanfare. In this episode I chat with Alex from Wisconsin, a fellow farmer who spends parts of his winters trapping raccoons and muskrats. Most of his raccoon trapping is done with dog proofs and focused on helping other farmers with crop damage problems. He catches most of his muskrats through the ice. It's a fun conversation and I learned a lot about DP trapping. We also talk a little about bear hunting, coyotes and other stuff. Enjoy!

In this episode we go over trapping BMP's, or Best Management Practices. BMP's were developed as a result of a 20+ year study designed to provide science-based information on trapping practices that meet the criteria for animal welfare, efficiency, selectivity, practicality and safety. BMP's are not mandatory, but parts of them may be implemented by individual state agencies. In Episode 69 of the Trapping Today Podcast, I go over news in the trapping world. The Stan Project is fully funded - thank you to those who donated - THIS IS GOING TO BE GOOD!!! New Mexico trappers won a recent victory, as the public lands trapping ban was killed in the legislature. Stay vigilant, this will likely resurface. Ontario proved its dedication to the Canadian trapping industry by pledging over $1 million to trapper education. That's Canadian dollars (haha, couldn't help myself!) but it's a big deal, and great news! Maine trappers have more rule changes to deal with, this time for bear trapping. I go over the details.
I talk fur prices from the Fur Harvesters March Auction in Finland. Results were mixed, with the good news going to lower end bobcat and coyote trappers. The rest of the items were pretty well more of the same.
I shipped most of my marten/fisher/weasel furs out to be tanned at Moyle Mink & Tannery (www.moytown.com). I discuss the option to tan and the Youtube video I put together on this.

In this episode, I discuss the dream I've always had of going into the Alaskan wilderness and being a trapper-homesteader. The topic is fresh in my mind after reading Stan Zuray's book, "Carry On". Stan was a star in the Discovery Channel's hit show "Yukon Men", which featured people from the Alaskan village of Tanana. Stan has an interesting story, growing up in Boston, Massachusetts, and moving to Alaska to get away from it all. Today he still runs a trapline in the country he originally homesteaded, 30 miles outside of town, and traps out of the cabin he built decades ago. In this episode, Cole Porter and I discuss our experiences at Neil Olson's 42nd annual New England Trappers Weekend in Bethel, Maine. The episode is recorded on the car ride home, so you'll notice some background noise and a few distractions, but I think we had a great conversation about what we picked up from the event.
In my mind, there are three aspects to a trapper's convention: 1) the people you meet and reunite with, 2) the things you learn from other trappers and demonstrations, and 3) the traps and supplies you get stocked up on. We discussed each of these topics, from a couple of different perspectives.
The main theme I picked up on from this convention was the idea that competition is good, if it's fair and you allow it to motivate you.
Some of the highlights of the weekend were the chance to meet and learn from Red O'Hearn, Mark Zagger and Gary Jepson, and a series of other demonstrations that we learned at least one or two things from. We got to catch up with several guys we met last year, and scored some pretty good deals on supplies, though we spent too much money like we always tend to do at shows.

Lure testing is an often overlooked topic in the trapping world, but being a professional trapper, Dobbins took it very seriously. Trappers are held to a high standard when it comes to landowner permission, and gaining permission is critical to our success on the trapline. In this episode, I discuss the options trappers have for getting their fur tanned, and go over some selling scenarios you'll need to think about when trying to profit from tanned fur. I discuss the pros and cons of self tanning, as well as share some resources on self tanning.
