Yorkshireman Roger Beaujolais has been a regular name on the British jazz scene for over 30 years. He began playing jump and jive with Ray Gelato in The Chevalier Brothers in the 1980s following through with one of the defining sounds of the 'Acid Jazz' era emerging from London clubland soon after with his band Vibraphonic in the early 1990s. Along the way he has also played with some big names and bands in pop and rock but over the last 20 years has concentrated solely on playing his jazz in his own comfort zone. Roger dropped in to speak with Chris Philips on The Blueprint to talk about his latest quartet album 'Sunset.'

Chris Philips invited his old friend, legendary producer, musician and songwriter Larry Mizell on air for a chat about his visit to London to take part in a gala celebration of a life in music of trumpeter Donald Byrd at London's Barbican.
In the 1970s, together with his brother the late Fonce MIzell, Larry produced five much cherished crossover albums for Donald - all for Blue Note Records. The first of them, 'Black Byrd' remained the biggest selling album in the label's history for over thirty years. The Mizells' light, soulful and groove based approach with Donald's music and that of saxophonist Gary Bartz, flautist Bobbi Humphrey, organist and keyboardist Johnny Hammond and various other artistes and r&b groups earned them an enviable musical longevity boosted by hip hop samplism that keeps it relevant and cherished over forty years on.
Composer and multi-instrumentalist John Surman is a key figure in a generation of European jazz musicians who crucially expanded the international horizons of jazz during the last three decades of the twentieth century and is still going strong! A stalwart of the ECM record label, and long acknowledged as an improviser of world class, he is composer of a body of work that extends far beyond the perceived boundaries of the jazz repertoire. I was lucky enough to catch up with John after being presented the Ivors Jazz Award at the Ivor Novello Awards Ceremony earlier this month! Aside from being a fantastic musician, he also has a wonderful sense of humour as you'll hear in this interview!

British trumpeter Freddie Gavita continues to be very involved in house various bands and orchestras at London's Ronnie Scott's jazz club. He has produced a fine self released album 'Transient' and joined Chris on The Blueprint programme for a lighthearted chat about the elements put in to the recording and revelations about some of the titling on the album, as well as other hilarious interludes.
Danish keyboardist, and long time member of the band Jazzkamikaze Morten Schantz joined Chris Philips on The Blueprint for a late night live solo piano session and conversation. Morten's latest album 'Godspeed' for the British label Edition Records has received rave reviews. Looking through the music we hear clear influences and appreciation of the fusion pioneers Weather Report and a leaning into club electronica. This was also the first time Morten had performed this music solo piano.
British drummer Ollie Howell has released his second album as a leader via the US label famiy Ropeadope. He recently spent several months out of the country as first artist in residence at Quincy Jones' new jazz club in Dubai. British pianist Ashley Henry is a double 2017 Jazz FM Award nominee for both Breakthrough Act and Best Live Experience (Jazz Re:Fest at London's Southbank). Justin Thurgur is a busy musician with a background stretching from folk music to Afro-Funk. He also runs a label called Funkiwala with long time music partner Kishon Khan tapping into a collective of like-minded musicians to produce a potent and attractive fusion of genres. Ahead of a mini tour of the UK the pair joined Chris Philips on the Blueprint to talk about Justin's debut as a leader 'No Confusion' laced with Afro-Funk influences and a reflection of his time working with Fela Kuti alumni Tony Allen and Dele Sosimi.
British band Partikel are releasing their next album 'Counteraction.' This time out the core trio with Duncan, Max Luthert on double bass and Eric Ford on drums and percussion builds on the success of the former release 'String Theory' with similar elements in places but the band now boasts the addition of guitarist Ant Law on the material. After a successful touring schedule during 2016 which took in Love Supreme Festival, Partikel are set to launch the album at Kings Place in London on May 11th. American saxophonist Tim Armacost is extraordinarily well travelled. He's lived in several countries and continents since his beginnings in Los Angeles. All of these experiences have informed his music, deep and vivid in composition. The latest album 'Time Being' is the manifestation of his imagination, picturing the exact musicians in situ inspired by the angular music of Ornette Coleman. Testament to his resourcefulness he gathered these very titans together for another superb album of burners. Tim took time out hours after completing a successful UK and European tour to chat with Chris Philips and play the new music on The Blueprint.
Amid their UK tour Australian trio Trichotomy's Sean Foran paid a visit to Jazz FM for a chat on The Blueprint with Chris Philips. Trichotomy's new album 'Known-Unknown' has become a favourite on several programmes on the station. Chris gets behind the creation of this, their fifth album, and invited Sean to play a couple of compositions from the album solo piano for the first time since the recording.
British pianist James Beckwith has studied piano musically, theoretically and mechanically as a musician, composer and Steinway piano technician. Saxophonist Camilla George releases her debut album as band leader 'Isang' right at the outset of 2017. Brought throught the acclaimed Jazz Warriors programme and a member of both Jazz Jamaica and Courtney Pine's Venus Warriors she has a bright and melodic outlook drawing rhythmical influence from her African heritage, the Caribbean and a nod to the American Songbook. Ahead of her album launch at London's Pizza Express on Wednesday 11th January she spoke with Chris Philips on Saturday's Blueprint show and played a selection from the new CD.

London band Triforce is keyboardist Dominic Canning, guitarist Mansur Brown, bassist Ricco Komolafe and drummer Benjamin Appiah. They are all aged just 19 and recently celebrated the release of a new E.P for the Jazz Refreshed as part of the label's ongoing '5ives' series. The TriForce sound packs a punch and has echoes of classic 1970s rock / funk / fusion. Dominic and Ricco joined Chris Philips on the Blueprint.
Gary Crosby is a long-established Kingpin of the British jazz scene. He was one of the original members of The Jazz Warriors, alongside some of our most celebrated players, and Jazz Jamaica in which he pays tribute to his Jamaican roots blending jazz with reggae. Crosby co-founded his music education programme Tomorrow's Warriors with his wife 25 years ago and to this day they continue to teach, encourage and mentor young musicians who show interest in jazz. Tomorrow's Warriors have raised the careers of many now well established and several award-winning jazz musicians including Binker and Moses, Nérija and Soweto Kinch. Jez Nelson spoke to Gary on his Somethin' Else programme ahead of a special 25 year celebratory Jazz In The Round event at London's Cockpit Theatre for EFG London Jazz Festival.
Pianist Geoff Eales was raised in the South Wales valleys and has a long and illustrious career. He was part of the BBC Concert Big Band for several years as well as accompanying pianist to star names including Dame Shirley Bassey and Dame Kiri Takanawa. Eales is a musician as easily at home with hard hitting, free improvised jazz as he is with tender melodic playing. He joined Chris Philips for a chat about his 13th album 'Transcience' and to play a couple of solo piano pieces.
Saxophonist Tori Freestone has a rich and diverse family lineage, as she explained to Chris Philips on The Blueprint. She's also super busy with several co-existing projects and numerous live tours and appearances. The Tori Freestone Trio have returned for 2016 with another fine album 'El Barranco' showcasing, in the main, Tori's brilliant compositional strength for which she has found recent inspiration ranging from a Manchester pub to Spanish mountains!
Nérija are a vibrant all-woman London band born Gary Crosby's Tomorrow's Warriors music education programme. They played a number of dates at London Jazz Festival and are fast gaining a growing following for their uplifting self-penned jams, the best of which now figure on their new Nérija E.P. Ever curious, Chris Philips finally managed to get three of the seven members, saxophonists Nubya Garcia and Cassie Kinoshi and trumpeter Sheila Maurice-Grey, in for a chat.
Grammy Award-winning musician and composer Maria Schneider introduced rock legend David Bowie to the music of saxophonist Donny McCaslin at a tiny New York club called the 55 Bar. Bowie immediately decided Donny and his band were just what he was looking for to record his final album 'Blackstar'. Donny himself already has a long and accomplished career as a genre bending jazz man, heavily influenced by electronica and dance music. The pairing was a fateful one and a perfect fit and the rest, as they say, is history. Donny was in London for the jazz festival with a sell-out date at Rich Mix. He came in to see Chris Philips and spoke openly about the emotion that remains raw after the loss of Bowie this year and explains how his new album 'Beyond Now' became a tribute to the great man.
New Orleans' young lion Christian Scott joined Chris Philips during his whirlwind tour which took in London Jazz Festival. Trump was once again on the discussion menu and Christian talks about the psychology of twins (he's one) and gives us a superb history lesson linked to his name appendage 'aTunde Adjuah.'
Marcus Strickland's Twi-life's recent Blue Note album 'Nihil Novi' and his work with Revive Music has received plenty of air-play on Jazz FM over the last year. Nashville's Kandace Springs recently made her solo recording debut on Blue Note Records with 'Soul Eyes' which sprang a clutch of instant hit pieces, played on Jazz FM. Kandace was one of the stars at Love Supreme Festival in the summer of 2016 but on her return to the EFG London Jazz Festival in November she played three dates, including the traditional opener 'Jazz Voice' on the South Bank and two sold-out extra dates with her American band. Grammy Award-winning vocalist Kurt Elling completed a sell-out week at London's Ronnie Scott's and on the last day joined Chris Philips to talk about his new, and very cool, Christmas album 'The Beautiful Day.' He was also spoke frankly about the election of Donald Trump to President of the United States whilst he's been away from home.
Brooklyn-based Japanese trumpeter Takuya Kuroda joined Chris on The Blueprint ahead of his EFG London Jazz Festival date at The Jazz Cafe on November 11th to talk about his new album 'Zigzagger.' It's a groove-packed album leaning deeply into hip hop and Afro-funk beats and, trumpet in hand, Takuya played freestyle over instrumentals from Mos Def and J Dilla in response to Chris' challenge.
Bassist Jim Richardson was a member of The John Horler Trio when they backed the great Chet Baker in 1983 for a week of dates at The Canteen in London's Covent Garden. Jim's own personal cassette recordings of these sets have been beautifully remastered and released on CD by Ubuntu Music. Jim and Martin Hummel, Ubuntu Music chief, joined Chris Philips on The Blueprint to talk about how they brought these recordings to life for the new release. British DJ, writer, producer, broadcaster and curator Debra Richards has fallen in love with the rich vein of talented jazz musicians emerging from Switzerland. Debra has gone so far as to compile a representative CD of Swiss jazz that is attached to the November 2016 edition of Jazzwise Magazine. British vibes man Orphy Robinson has assembled an all-star band for a night of celebration of the late Bobby Hutcherson at St James The Great in East London on Thursday September. He joined Chris for some favourite Hutcherson tunes and a chat about the great man.
Tunisian Oud player Dhafer Youssef has just released his first album with an all American band including trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Ben Williams and Mark Guiliana on drums. 'Diwan of Beauty and Odd' celebrates the beauty in weirdness with superb improvisation over unusual time patterns, punctuated with Dhafer's incredible voice, honed as a former Muezzin calling the Islamic faithful to prayer! In an endearing interview he explains it to Chris Philips on The Blueprint programme, aired on Jazz FM, Saturday night at 10pm.
Leon 'Foster' Thomas hails from Trinidad and is a passionate advocate of the national instrument, the steel pan. His latest album 'Metamorphosis' is testament to his virtuosity and improvisational ability, a solid jazz album showcasing the pans beautifully in the genre. Leon was in london for several weeks prior to The Notting Hill Carnival and worked with a steel pan orchestra and young players. Not only did he visit Jazz FM and mesmerise with a solo pan session laying down Wayne Shorter's 'Footprints' and Sam Rivers' 'Beatrice' but he took time out to chat about the history and application of his beloved instrument, and play selections from the new album.

San Jose Suite is trumpeter Etienne Charle’s 6th album - an ambitious ten part suite which explores the histories, cultures and musical traditions of three Western settlements that share a name: San Jose, Costa Rica; San Jose, California; and Charles’ native St Joseph, Trinidad (known as San Jose during the era of Spanish colonisation).

Snarky Puppy's charismatic keyboardist Cory Henry was in the UK on tour with his new solo project 'The Revival' showcasing his Gospel rooted virtuosity with the Hammond B3 organ at the centre of the music. Chris Philips invited him in for a quick chat ahead of his London date at the Union Chapel in Islington. They reflected on his music upbringing and what might have been with interest from the late Prince in Cory's band.
Bluey joined Chris at lunchtime on May 4th just before Incognito's double date with Citrus Sun at London's Electric Ballroom. Saxophonist Noah Preminger has a voice and a sound that belies his 29 years. A rich and vibrant, gritty tone conjures feelings of listening to some of the greats. But then Noah has played with some of the greats including studying his music with David Liebman. Now he teaches himself as well as a travelling and recording jazz musician. Chris Philips has been a big fan and supporter of Noah's latest album 'Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground,' an exploration and celebration of Delta Blues and jazz. Multi GRAMMY Award-winning American pianist, composer and arranger Laurence Hobgood came into Jazz FM to talk extensively with Ruth Fisher on her very first Full Circle Programme on April 3rd. American pianist Kenny Barron has for many years been one of the most dedicated and hardest working jazz musicians in the world. In 2010 he was honoured with The National Endowment for the Arts as a Jazz Master. During a stunning career he has worked with many great names from Dizzy Gillespie to Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie Haden, Ron Carter and countless others. Recently he has been an integral part of the Gerry Gibbs Thrasher Dream Trio with drummer Gibbs and long time collaborator Ron Carter but this year has finally released another album under his own name for legacy label Impulse! called 'The Book of Intuition'. After a sell-out night at Ronnie Scotts and before the second night he joined Chris Philips on-air.
Saxophonist Binker Golding and drummer Moses boyd have worked together extensively for several years. Rehearsal and warm-up times with various bands gave rise to the idea of their duo collaboration, from which sprung the firebrand ground-breaking vinyl-only improvised album release 'Dem Ones' on London's Gearbox Records. In late 2015 the pair won the MOBO Award for Best Jazz Act and recently a nomination for the Jazz FM Awards 2016 for both UK Jazz Act of the Year (Public Vote) and Breakthrough Act. Based out out New York since 1999, trombonist and band leader Ryan Keberle and his band Catharsis are make a bold and brilliant statement with recent albums, the latest of which is 'Azul Infinito'. This super strong quintet stars Chilean vocalist Camila Meza, trumpeter Michael Rodriguez, bassist Jorge Roeder and Eric Doob on drums, all of whom join Ryan on his European tour. Keberle has featured on no less than 4 Grammy nominated albums this year including the Grammy-winning 'The Thompson Fields' by Maria Schneider Orchestra. He took time out of his visiting educational duties with the Royal Academy of Music to join Chris on air at lunch time to talk about his broad involvement in music, in particular jazz, the New York scene and the superb new album that has been staple diet on Chris's Blueprint programme.

Gilles Peterson joined his old mate Chris Philips on air to talk about his new Havan Cultura Band album. Taking the elements of traditional and ritualistic Cuban music, in particular rumba rhythms, Gilles farmed the recordings to some of his favourite electronic producers and the result is a stark and unique genre bending collection of deep club beats. He also spoke about plans for his special presentation at Love Supreme Festival this summer with a 'Dingwalls Special' and live show featuring Cuban vocalist Dayme Arocena and played an exclusive new cut from her second album, a much anticipated April release for his label Brownswood Recordings.
American Drummer Jeff Williams has played with some of the biggest names in jazz including Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, Lee Konitz, Dave Liebman, Randy Brecker, John Abercrombie and Joe Lovano. His new album for Whirlwind Recordings features a band of some of Britain's finest young players with Josh Arcoleo (tenor saxophone), Phil Robson (guitar), Kit Downes (keys) and Sam Lasserson (basses). Hailing from Tel Aviv, Adam Ben Ezra has become a Youtube sensation with his video specials. His rhythmic and multi-layered solo musical performances, often employing looping technology, have earned him many fans. He recently played at the Sadlers Wells Theatre in London as part of the London Flamenco Festival with guitarist Daniel Casares and this Sunday (13th March) will close the London Bass Guitar Show at Olympia. Young saxophonist Sam Crockatt has produced a fantastic new album 'Mells Bells' for Whirlwind Recordings. Acclaimed pianist Kit Downes is among the players in his band. Sam joined Chris Philips on The Blueprint to talk about the album, which takes its name and much inspiration from the West Country Sam now calls home.
Bassist and Snarky Puppy original Michael League came by today to chat with Chris Philips about the second volume of their vocal project Family Dinner due for release February 12th 2016. It's an album packed full of guest vocalists and musicians from upcoming talent like Britain's Jacob Collier to Laura Mvula, David Crosby, Salif Keita, Charlie Hunter, Big D Perkins and many more. Julian Joseph is a jewel in the British jazz crown. He has wide international acclaim and these days moves in top circles of jazz, classical and opera music. He also runs his Julian Joseph Academy mentoring young players and joined Chris on-air before the Academy played at Rich Mix in Shoreditch in the EFG London Jazz Festival. Julian is also appearing at the new Cambridge Jazz Festival this year.
Niji burst on the scene this year with a great new album 'Better Days Ahead' which has caught the attention of Jazz FM's Mike Chadwick, Chris Philips and Ruth Fisher. After a showcase in Camden in September he toured major music cities in the U.S including New York, New Orleans, Nashville and Los Angeles and now brings his full band to Pizza Express in London's Soho for the late show Thursday November 26th. Lonnie Liston Smith played a rare date with his young band at The Brooklyn Bowl in London on Friday November 20th on a fantastic nostalgic night with DJs Greg Edwards, Jeff Young, JM, Chris Philips and Gilles Peterson. Sandra Nkake is performing in Alex Webb's 'Lush Life: a tribute to Billy Strayhorn' at Cadogan Hall in Chelsea on Friday 20th November, as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival. The pair visited Chris Philips to talk about the impact of Strayhorn on American music and detailed the show. Sandra is from Paris and gave a stark personal account of being in the midst of the violence of Friday's attacks whilst at the Stade de France with her children. She also spoke eloquently about the fallout from these terrorist attacks.

Sardinian jazz vocalist Filomena Campus returns to London’s Pizza Express Jazz Club with her third Theatralia Jazz Festival (formerly My Jazz Islands). The festival aims to bring together Sardinian and British culture using music and theatre from British and Italian musicians and writers. A carefully crafted bill presents innovative collaborations to bring bright ideas to life.
Opening night November 9 features a new and original project celebrating women's art and music called 4Njanas. Filomena Campus features with harpist Tori Handsley, pianist Laura Cole and bassist Ruth Goller followed by a duo performance from Sardinian trumpeter and flugelhorn player Paolo Fresu with British tuba virtuoso Oren Marshall.
On November 10 it’s ‘England vs Italy’ as Stefano Benni, one of Italy's most prominent writers, joins forces with Fresu and an all star band featuring British vocalist Cleveland Watkiss and Filomena Campus. Benni is renowned for his readings, drawing big Italian crowds.
On the closing night November 11 a production of ’Misterioso' journeys in the music of Thelonious Monk and Billie Holiday written by Stefano Benni, and again featuring Filomena Campus and Cleveland Watkiss (Monk’s spoken voice, vocalist) with pianist Robert Mitchell, vibes player Orphy Robinson and saxophonist Jean Toussaint.
Theatralia Jazz Festival also presents a number of free events at the Italian Cultural Institute London and The Italian Bookshop, before the main festival, including workshops, music nights and a book presentation from Stefano Benni.

Saxophonist, flautist and vibes player Tubby Hayes is a true British Jazz icon. He lived fast, played hard and left a huge void after his early death aged 38. He played with great American musicians too, commanding huge respect. Writer and fan Mark Baxter releases his new film 'A Man in a Hurry' on Monday October 26 featuring rare and unseen footage, interviews with those that knew Hayes, narration from Hollywood actor Martin Freeman and a superb sound track. He spoke with Chris Philips about the making of the film with superb young film producer Lee Cogswell and the impact of Hayes music on the history of British jazz.
Tahirah Memory has been on tour with soul man Jarrod Lawson for over a year as part of his band The Good People. Before Jarrod's World tour this year the pair co-wrote and co-produced Tahirah's debut self released album 'Pride.' She comes from a family with a rich musical heritage, her father Thara Memory is a trumpeter and educator and Grammy Award-winner. Currently back on tour around several European cities Tahirah makes her UK solo debut with keyboard player Carl Hudson at Luton's Bear Club on November 11th. She came into Jazz FM to join Chris Philips on air for a chat about a tremendous career year which also sees Jarrod Lawson and the band play their biggest London date so far on November 14th at Shepherds Bush Empire, part of EFG London Jazz Festival.

Brooklyn based keyboardist Jesse Fischer was in the band for pop sensation Lunchmoney Lewis at the recent V Festival and has extended his stay for an exclusive, intimate date this Thursday August 27th at Jazz Refreshed at Mau Mau in London's Portobello Road. Fischer is someone who is constantly on the Jazz FM music radar with his many projects including his band Soul Cycle, remixes of Gregory Porter, Takuya Kuroda and Tribe Called Quest, up-to-date re-interpretations of classic Herbie Hancock funk-jazz and more. His recent collaboration with saxophonist Sly5thAve was a superb redux on Herbie's 1973 album 'Head Hunters' with pumping bass lines, decadent horn arrangements and contemporary club beats. Nina Simone was a prickly lady, especially in her later life when David Freeman was granted an audience with the great lady when she was in London to perform at the Royal Albert Hall in 1998. He, like many others before him, was slightly concerned how his (short) interview would go. But there was nothing to worry about – it went very well. Although short, Nina opened up about her life as a musician, her life as an older person and that story about not being allowed into the Curtis Institute.

Record numbers of people joined Jazz FM for its third Love Supreme festival from 3rd to 5th July 2015 with Van Morrison spectacularly headlining the main stage on Sunday.
As the weekend unfolded there was a great reaction to live performances from all the stages, including Hugh Masekela, Dianne Reeves and Soul Artist of the Year Jarrod Lawson. On Saturday, Jazz FM’s own Yamaha Jazz FM Replay Project big band made up of amateur musicians was overwhelmed with love from the crowds as they kicked off Saturday’s proceedings in The Arena. Hackney Colliery Band took the crowd from rain to sunshine opening Sunday with an energetic set. Innovative pianist Jason Moran performed his tribute to Fats Waller, complete with head mask.
There were over 27 hours of live broadcasts on Jazz FM including Jeff Young, James Torme and Lynn Parsons with top guests like Chaka Khan, Terence Blanchard, Larry Graham, Omar and Bill Laurance all stopping by the Jazz FM Routemaster.

Lisa Simone, daughter of the legendary Nina Simone talks to Nigel Williams at Jazz FM about the upcoming Netflix documentary 'What Happened, Miss Simone?'. The documentary promises never-before-heard recordings and rare archive footage, along with diaries, letters and interviews.
An album, ‘Nina Revisited’, will also be released to accompany the film, as her songs are ‘revisited’ by singers such as Lauryn Hill, Gregory Porter and Lalah Hathaway.
Speaking to Jazz FM, Lisa Simone Kelly said “I wanted to make sure that my mother was remembered properly, in the way that she deserved to be, and for all the contributions and the sacrifices that she’s made to American culture and to society in general.”
The documentary is released on Friday 26th June.
