Tres Cuentos is a bilingual literary podcast dedicated to Latin America's narratives. Each episode is in Spanish and English. The podcast narrates a piece of literature and later reflects on the author, culture, or history behind the story. Our goal is to make our literature accessible.
Is your city a place to survive hunger? Is your place of origin a memory to never forget? For the poet Johanny Vázquez Paz, Chicago, and Puerto Rico have been like this. In the comments, we discuss the poet's life and end with a healing poem called "Advice From My Mother: Extreme Anointing."

What can save a girl from the horrors of war? The author Roxana Méndez tells us that she found refuge in poetry during the Salvadorian civil war. In this episode, we present two of the author’s poems that reflect the moment when a family is fleeing the armed conflict. We begin the first episode of Female Poets with the Mexican-American poet Liliana Valenzuela. Through her poetry, we discover a woman curious about the world who questions what has been taken as truth. Her poetry reflects a family nostalgia and the concern that the human being has not yet found the reason for his existence.

The survivors fall in love but believe that their union is forbidden. Paranoia will lead them to see the dead friend and husband return to the world of the living through the big screen.

As both men get acquainted and discover a common interest, the Englishman reveals the reason for his apparent distrust: that his shadow has become a frightening, independent entity.

The maroon community, San Basilio de Palenque, did not rise one day out of nowhere. To become recognized as an autonomous and free community, it had to fall and rise many times under the leadership of many and under different names. These are some of their stories. Later, we will talk more about one of the maroon heroes and how the palenques were the space in which runaway slaves and their offspring reinvented their world from their African roots and pointed the way to their freedom.

In the interview made by the Cuban essayist Miguel Barnet, Esteban Montejo, a former runaway, recounts his life as a slave in the Cuban Plantation Flor de Sagua. Later we explore slavery in the Cuban plantations and how Haiti’s abolition and conquest of self-government affected the slave trade and the sugar industry in Cuba.
